Odella Ashburn
McMINNVILLE, Tenn. - Odella Goolsby Ashburn of McMinnville died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, in a hospital there. She was 88.

She was a homemaker and attended the Church of Christ.

Survivors include a son, Bobby Ashburn, McMinnville; three daughters, Betty Burton, McMinnville, Dorothy Herring, Morrison, Tenn., and Eva Smith, Wisconsin; four sisters, Shirley Flatt, Ohio, Lucille Hubbard, Michigan, Clara Owens, Cookeville, Tenn., and Ruby Whitehead, Indiana; one brother, Junior Goolsby, Cookeville; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home with Vernon Joines officiating.

Burial will be in Whorton Springs cemetery.

Visitation was to be today from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Clifford Carter
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Clifford Charles Carter died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, in a local hospital. He was 61.

He was an Army veteran and attended the Church of God.

Survivors include a son, Manuel Carter; mother, Frances Underwood; sister, Debbie Munger; three brothers, Ronnie Underwood, Cleveland; Larry Underwood, El Paso, Texas, and Charlie Underwood, Philadelphia; and three grandchildren.

Services were today at 3 p.m. at the Wildwood Chapel of Buckner-Rush Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Henderson and the Rev. Taylor Strickland officiating.

Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Donald DeChant
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Donald A. DeChant died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, in a Chattanooga hospital. He was 82.

He was a member of the Brighthope Assembly of God, was active in the Telephone Pioneers of America and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Michigan.

Mr. DeChant retired from Western Electric Co., and worked for the Library of Congress in Phoenix on books that talk for the blind.

He was the widower of Helmi DeChant.

Survivors include a son, Ronald W. DeChant, Cleveland; two daughters, Barbara Borowicz, New Baltimore, Mich., and Phyllis DeChant, Sunnyvale, Calif.; one brother, Russell DeChant, Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Wednesday at Fike Funeral Home.

Charles Kildgore
TRACY CITY, Tenn. - A memorial service for Charles Kildgore will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle.

Mr. Kildgore, who had lived and practiced law in Grundy County for three decades, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at his home. He was 76.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grundy County Emergency Medical Services Building Fund, P.O. Box 327, Coalmont, TN 37313.

Ralph Kimbrough
SPRING CITY, Tenn. - Ralph Bradley Kimbrough Sr. of St. Augustine, Fla., professor emeritus of educational leadership at the University of Florida, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998. He was 76.

Formerly of Spring City, he received his doctorate from the University of Tennessee in 1953.

Professor Kimbrough had a distinguished academic career that spanned over 40 years. He was the author of several professional books and articles and provided leadership in the area of politics of education.

After his retirement from the University of Florida, he taught at East Tennessee State University and Georgia Southern University.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys King Kimbrough; son, Ralph B. Kimbrough Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Spring City cemetery with the Rev. Don Allison officiating.

Local arrangements are by Vaughn Funeral Home, Spring City.

Conley Miller
DAYTON, Tenn. - Conley Franklin 'Con' Miller died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at his home. He was 86.

Mr. Miller retired from Kaysor-Roth in Dayton after many years of service. He was an active member of the Rhea County Republican Party, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of First Baptist Church of Dayton.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Thurman Miller; daughter, Adena Williamson, Marietta, Ga.; brother, Eugene Bill Miller, Clearwater Fla.; one grandson.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Vanderwall Funeral Home with minister Steve Brown and the Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating.

Burial will be in Buttram cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the funeral home.

Floyd Smith
TULLAHOMA, Tenn. - Floyd 'Smitty' Smith died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at a local hospital. He was 77.

Services were today at 2 p.m. CST at Wesley Heights United Methodist Church in Tullahoma with the Rev. J.C. Stewart and the Rev. Billy Panter officiating.

Burial was in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Tullahoma.

Thomas Smith
DAYTON, Tenn. - Thomas W. Smith died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998. He was 64.

Arrangements will be announced by Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home, Dayton.

Dixie May
Dixie June May died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, in a local hospital. She was 90.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at New Hope Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Arthur Jones officiating.

Burial will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Ruby McPherson
Ruby Liner McPherson died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, in a local retirement home. She was 88.

The Athens, Tenn., native was the widow of Stuart N. McPherson. She was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.

Survivors include three nieces, Mary Louise Tennyson, Athens, Thelma Collins, Chattanooga, and Alma Lawrence, Texas; and nephew, Buddy Liner, Athens.

A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills cemetery.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Barbara Melville
Barbara Jean Melville died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, in a local hospital. She was 61.

She attended the Church of God and was the widow of Charles Melville.

Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Page, Chattanooga; two sons, James Melville, Rossville, Ga., and Frank Melville, Chattanooga; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Edward Muncy
Edward Muncy died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at his home. He was 73.

He was a native of Jonancy, Ky., but lived in Bryant, Ala., before he moved to Chattanooga.

Arrangements will be announced by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

Barbara Noel
Barbara Jean Noel died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998. She was 57.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

Johnnie Norise
Johnnie Clifford Norise died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, in a local hospital. He was 70.

He was the brother of the late Andrew Norise Jr. and John L. Norise and Martha Norise.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Norise; son, Johnnie C. Norise Jr.; daughter, Patricia Walker, all of Chattanooga; sister, Albert Banks, McDonald, Ga.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral was Friday at 1 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.

Burial was in Forest Hills cemetery.

Arrangements were by Taylor Funeral Home.

Essie Oxford
Essie Mae Oxford of Ringgold died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at her residence. She was 85.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Oxford.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 5 p.m. at South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

Melvin Pettyjohn
Melvin Powell Pettyjohn of Rossville, Ga., died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, in a local hospital. He was 84.

He was a retired manager at Sears automotive department with over 30 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was also a honorary member of the Veterans Association of the Sixth U.S. Calvary. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and the Spencer Class for many years.

He was also a member of the Keenagers of the Fort Oglethorpe First Baptist Church and was a member of the Crawfish Springs Masonic Lodge No. 300 F&AM; for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Pettyjohn.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol McDowell, Fort Oglethorpe; a son, Leroy Pettyjohn, Memphis; a sister, Marion Nixon, Atlanta; a brother, Gene Pettyjohn, Fort Oglethorpe; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Jump officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 700 Pine St., Chattanooga, TN 37402 or to Keenagers of First Baptist Church of Fort Oglethorpe, 115 LaFayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe, GA 30742.

Julius Piazza
Julius A. Piazza of Vicksburg, Miss., died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at his son's home in Chattanooga. He was 78.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired from service as a lieutenant colonel in 1980.

He also worked with the U.S. Army in the Vicksburg River District of Corps of Engineers on the Mississippi River. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Kette Piazza.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Ann Piazza, Jackson, Miss.; two sons, Julius A. Piazza III, Chattanooga, and Maj. Robert Anthony Piazza, Madison, Miss.; a brother, Charles Lewis Piazza, Hot Springs, Ark.; and three grandchildren.

Services and burial will be in Vicksburg, Miss.

There will be no visitation or services here.

Local arrangements are by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.
