Clifford Bess
ALTAMONT, Tenn. - Clifford I. Bess died Sunday, Jan. 16, 1999, in an area nursing home. He was 83.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen K. Bess, and two sons, Claude E. and Douglass Bess.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Bess; one daughter, Jeweldean Sweeton; three sons, Deloria, Woodrow, and Clayton Bess; one brother, Shelby Bess, all of Altamont; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tenn.

Burial will be in Altamont City cemetery.

Isaac Braden
WHITWELL, Tenn. - Isaac N. Braden of the Griffith's Creek community near Whitwell, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 73.

Mr. Braden was a member of Bivens Chapel First Congregational Methodist Church, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a retired coal miner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, O'dell Payne Braden, a sister, Vinne Adams, and three brothers, Isam, France and Lee Braden.

Survivors include his wife, Vera W. Braden, Griffiths Creek; two sons, Randy W. Braden, Tracy City, Tenn., and Ronnie D. Braden, Hixson; two daughters, Anita K. Bone, Chattanooga, and Anna Bell Pickett, Gruetli-Laager, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Gail Slatton, Whitwell; stepson, Kirk Minton, Dunlap;. one brother, John F. Braden, South Pittsburg, Tenn.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services will be today at 1 p.m. CST at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tenn., with the Rev. Charles O. Ross and Darrell Slaughter officiating.

Burial will be in Griffiths Creek cemetery.

Howard Byram
SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. - Howard Wesley Byram died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in an area hospital. He was 46.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Finley Byram; two daughters, Faye Griffin and Renee Byram, all of South Pittsburg; two stepdaughters, Pamela Namanny, Hixson, and Crystal Atterton, Whitwell, Tenn.; one stepson, David Fairbanks, Hixson; two brothers, Jack Byram, Trenton, Ga., and John Byram, Ringgold, Ga.; two grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. CST at Hooper Funeral home with Ron Namanny officiating.

Burial will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be today from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jewell Jones
ALTAMONT, Tenn. - Jewell D. Jones died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in an area hospital. She was 50.

She was a daughter of the late Earl V. and Lucille McCarver Scissom.

Survivors include her husband, Ronnie M. Jones; four sisters, Earlene Cook, Gruetli-Laager, Tenn., Wanda Layne, Coalmont, Tenn., Barbara Sherman, Cagle, Tenn., and Patricia Payne, Powder Springs, Ga.; four brothers, Doug and Charles E. Scissom, Gruetli-Laager, J.L. Scissom, Dalton, Ga., and Anthony Scissom, Coalmont.

Services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tenn., with the Rev. Clayton Jones and Charles O. Ross officiating.

Burial will be in Coalmont cemetery.

Martha Jordan
GUILD, Tenn. - Martha Elizabeth Jordan died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999. She was 83.

She was formerly of Charlotte, N.C., where she worked at the S&W; Cafeteria and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Charlotte.

She was the widow of James E. Jordan and the mother of the late Ronald Jordan.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Brown, Guild, Wanda Adkins, Cordele, Ga., and Lillian Durham, Pensacola, Fla.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. CST at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Funeral Home in Jasper, Tenn., with the Rev. Doug Janeaway and the Rev. Phil Beasley officiating.

Burial will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens, Jasper.

Visitation will be today from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Betty Lawrence
ATHENS, Tenn. - Betty V. Lawrence died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, in a local hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home in Athens.

David Moss
ETOWAH, Tenn. - David M. Moss died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at his home. He was 69.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Harwell Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Alonzo Grace officiating.

Burial will be in Old Salem cemetery.

Thelma Rhodes
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Thelma Ruth Rhodes died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in an area hospital. She was 88.

Graveside services will be today at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kevin Colvard officiating.

Visitation will be today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grissom Funeral Home.

Jacquelyn Smithson
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Jacquelyn Beth Smithson died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in a local nursing home.

She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church and the National Wildlife Federation.

She was a hospital apprentice in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and had worked for 14 years in the Physical Therapy Department at Bradley Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Charles C. Smithson; two children, Martin S. Smithson, Melbourne, Fla., and Charlene B. Blackmon, Cleveland; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be today at 7 p.m. at Fike Funeral Home with the Rev. Jackson P. Weikel officiating.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Betty Jo Whitaker
ETOWAH, Tenn. - Betty Jo Whitaker died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at her home. She was 56.

Services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. John E. Pennington Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nora Bates
Nora Ellen Menz Bates of Rossville died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at a Nashville hospital. She was 72.

Graveside services will be today at 2 p.m. at Lakewood Memory Gardens East.

Arrangements are by W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home, Fort Oglethorpe.

Evelyn Blakley
Evelyn S. Blakley, formerly of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in Fairborn, Ohio. She was 73.

Graveside services will be today at 1:30 p.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery.

There will be no visitation at the Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Brown
Margaret L. Brown died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at her home. She was 77.

A native and longtime resident of the Chattanooga area, she was a member of Ooltewah Baptist Church and an active member of Women in Construction.

She was the widow of Robert T. Brown Sr.

Survivors include one daughter, Marti Brown, Hixson; one son, Butch Brown, Chattanooga; and four grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Houston Bynum officiating.

Burial will be in New McDonald cemetery in Ooltewah.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund for Women in Construction, 2104 S. Orchard Knob Ave. Chattanooga, TN 37404.

Billy Bush
Billy G. Bush died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 71.

Born on Lookout Mountain, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II and the Korean War.

He had been employed by TVA and was a men's clothier, having retired from Ira Trivers.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Gallagher Bush; two daughters, Deborah Grasso, Marlborough, Conn., and Constance Russell, Sewanee, Tenn.; two sons, Billy G. Bush, Chattanooga and John B. Bush, Dalton, Ga.; and eight grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Chattanooga National cemetery with the Rev. Carter N. Paden officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, Chattanooga Chapter, 5808 Lee Highway, Chattanooga, TN 37421, or the Book of Remembrance, St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 848 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN 37415.
