Lizzie Slaughter
Lizzie M. Slaughter died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in a local nursing home. She was 83.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

Imogene Smith
Imogene Shell Smith of Signal Mountain died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 69.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Young, Hixson, and Gail Young Dennis, Signal Mountain; two sons, Gary and Dwight Young, both of Signal Mountain; four sisters, Mary Darby and Oma Strohlein, Signal Mountain, Georgia Blackwell and Bertie Murray, Varnell, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. CST at Putnam-Standefer-Reed Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Hall cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. at the funeral home.

Iva Speir
Iva Speir of Hixson died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in a local hospital.

She was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area, was retired from Loret Villa and was the widow of James L. Speir.

Survivors include four children, Joan Gann, Alabama, Norman McDonald, Winston, N.C., Janice Layne, Hixson, and Carolyn Brewer, Ooltewah; one sister, Helen Hunt, Indiana; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

George Starnes
George T. Starnes died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 83.

Services will be today at 11:30 a.m. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Brent Hall officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

Mary Sterry
Mary Margaret Sterry of Chattanooga, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in a local nursing home. She was 74.

Survivors include six daughters, Nancy Gilliam, Nelda Gayle Butcher, Pamela Middleton, and Margie Sue Swanson, all of Chattanooga, Debbie McCurdy, Lawton, Okla., and Judy Renfro, Nashville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Boyd Funeral Home in Ashland City, Tenn.

Thelma Stokes
Thelma Goodwin Stokes of St. Louis, Mo., and formerly of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999.

Arrangements will be announced by the Trammell Chapel of Hardwick & Sons Funeral Home.

Bessie Strickland
Bessie J. Strickland died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in an Athens, Tenn., hospital. She was 89.

Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Ernest Tigner
Ernest 'Lamont' Tigner Jr. of Oakdale, La., and a former resident of Chattanooga, died there Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999. He was 47.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

James Underwood
James E. Underwood of Soddy-Daisy died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 57.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, attended the Church of God and was preceded in death by his father, George Underwood.

Survivors include one daughter Cheryl Ann Underwood; one son, Jimmy Underwood, both of Fall River, Mass.; mother, Anna Underwood, Cleveland, Tenn.; one sister, Shirley Ann Pearson, Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Noel Underwood, Soddy-Daisy, and Ronnie Underwood, Cleveland, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements will be announced by Williamson & Sons Funeral Home.

John Webb
John Edward Webb died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at his home. He was 66.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Webb, and his parents, Coke and Lela Duggan Webb.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Woodward, Soddy-Daisy; two sons, Tommy Grant, Sale Creek, and Johnny Grant, Reliance, Tenn.; three sisters, Francis Owens, Vivian Stewart and Vivilean Stewart, all of Flintstone, Ga.; two grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy Webb officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton County Memorial Park in Soddy-Daisy.

Visitation will be today from 1 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John Wells
John Winston Wells, who retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 67.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at the Dodds Avenue Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Hofstetter and chaplain Larry Wirth officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery, with full military honors being provided by Robins Air Force Base.

Ollie Baker
McMINNVILLE, Tenn. - Ollie Agnus Baker died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in a Bledsoe County hospital. She was 76.

She was a retired factory worker and a member of Spencer Church of Christ.

She was the widow of Emery Baker and the mother of the late Vonda Miller.

Survivors include three daughters, Nina Blankenship and Betty Blankenship, Pikeville, Tenn., and Bobbie Robin, Spencer, Tenn.; one son, Hugh Baker, Knoxville; one sister, Anna Vinson Bickford, Sparta, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Spencer Chapel of Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home with Hubert Davis and Edwin Mahan officiating.

Burial will be in the Town cemetery in Spencer.

The family is receiving friends at the funeral home.

Barbara Choate
SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. - Barbara Lofty Choate died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. She was 67.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. CST at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg, with the Rev. Jeff Lane and the Rev. Tommy Hensley officiating.

Burial will be in New Hope cemetery.

Ronnie Coffey
MONTEAGLE, Tenn. - Ronnie G. Coffey died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, in a hospital in Tullahoma, Tenn. He was 54.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Cumberland Funeral Home in Monteagle with the Rev. Mark Ernest Phipps officiating.

Burial will be in Summerfield cemetery.

Vina Dodson
McMINNVILLE, Tenn. - Vina Yates Dodson died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in River Park Hospital in Warren County. She was 78.

She was a retired factory worker and a member of Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Leonard Dodson, and a grandson, Scottie Boyd.

Survivors include her husband, George M. Dodson Sr.; one son, George Dodson Jr., Spencer, Tenn.; three daughters, Hazel Hennessee and June Mears, Rock River, Tenn., and Phylis Hayes, Tullahoma, Tenn.; one sister, Louise McCormick, Rock Island; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home with Dennis Deweese and Bill Montandon officiating.

Burial will be in Crain Hill cemetery.

Visitation will be today after 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
