Mrs. W.K. Thompson

Ethel Akin Mooney Thompson, 103, longtime resident of West 7th Street, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2004, at NHC Columbia.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Polk Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Williamson, the Rev. Jim Hughes and the Rev. Tommy Vann officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia.

The Maury County native was born November, 29, 1900, to the late William and Etta Branch Akin. She received her early education in Nashville. She returned to Columbia in 1924 with her husband, the late W.K. Thompson, a well known businessman and civic leader. They were married 52 years, until his death in 1974. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker who excelled in needlework, including crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery and delightful handmade dolls. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and long time member of the Sunshine Class at the First United Methodist Church in Columbia.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Ann Thompson Willis of Columbia; a son, William K. Thompson, Jr. and wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Jackson Thompson of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two granddaughters, Katie Willis Basanavicius of Columbia and Eleanor Ann Shaifer of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two grandsons, Chip Willis of Sarasota, Fla., and Mark Thompson of Oberentfelden, Switzerland; three great grandchildren, Will Cannady of Columbia, Rachel and Jennifer Shaifer of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two nieces, Mary Ann Hyde of Noblesville, Ind. and Mayetta Roberts of Franklin; special family friend, Vicki Stremming Willis of Tallahassee, Fla.

Pallbearers will be Will Cannady, Neil Basanavicius, Chip Willis, Mark Thompson, Rufus Ross, Jim Lochridge and Bedford Lochridge.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 222 W. 7th Street, Columbia, TN 38401

The family would like to express their special thanks to the congregation of the First United Methodist Church, the First Presbyterian Church Women's Circle, employees and staff of NHC Columbia, Dr. Gaylon Harris, Charlie and Guy Odom for their thoughtfulness and concern over the years.

Vernon R. McAnally, DVM

Vernon R. McAnally, DVM, age 73, of Shelbyville, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Bedford County Medical Center.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Adams officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Polk Memorial Gardens.

He was born April 10, 1931 in Maury County. He was the loving husband of Kathleen McAnally and proud father of Scott and Heather McAnally of Shelbyville, Dan (Lindsey) McAnally of Atlanta, Ga., David (Debbie) McAnally of Memphis and Paula McAnally of Arkansas.

In addition, he is survived by his sister, Jean McAnally (Jasper) Foster of Columbia; brother, Dr. James L. (Mary) McAnally of Loudon; six grandchildren, Kevin, Kelly, Ryan, Ben and Hadley McAnally and Lorelei Sachenbacher and one great-grandchild, Paul McAnally.

He was the son of the late Paul V. and Evelyn McAnally of the Zion Community in Columbia. He attended Columbia military Academy and graduated from Hay Long High School in Mt. Pleasant. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and received his veterinary degree from Auburn University. He had a private veterinary practice in Johnson City before accepting a veterinary position with the USDA in Shelbyville. Dr. McAnally retired in 1998 to spend more time with his family and play golf with his friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Kenny Foster, Stan Foster, and Conn McAnally, and his first cousin, Richard Brown. He was a member of First United Church.

Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel in Shelbyville. Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbia.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Sally Warren

Sally Marie Staggs Warren, 60, of Collinwood, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shackelford Funeral Home in Waynesboro with Sandy Potts officiating. Internment will follow in the Memorial Gardens.

She was a Wayne County native and the daughter of the late Leonard and Mary Frances Brewer Staggs. She was also preceded in death by husband, Billy C. Warren and son, Billy Warren Jr.

Survivors include her sons, Billy V. Warren of Cypress Inn and Ricky L. Warren of Mt. Pleasant; daughters, Rebecca Thompson and Donna Staggs, both of Collinwood and Lisa Schultz of Waynesboro; sisters, Frankie Lineberry of Clifton and Elsie McClanahan of Camden; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Eula Lee Wyrick

Eula Lee Wyrick, 92, of Lawrenceburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at National Health Care Center.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Neal Funeral Home with Tony Ayers officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cross Roads Cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late W.A. and Nannie Roberts Fincher. She was the wife of the late Tommy Wyrick. She was a member Cross Roads Freewill Baptist.

Mrs. Annie Garner

Mrs. Annie Florence Garner, 71, of Columbia, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Carmack Blvd. Church of Christ with Brother Thomas Ray Frierson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. The body will lie-in-state from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Roundtree, Napier & Ogilvies Columbia Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Tommie G. Jones and Mrs. Myrtle L. Jones. She was a retiree of Columbia Central High School cafeteria. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Demetrius Lamont Garner.

Survivors include her husband, Mr. William "Stack" Garner of Columbia; son, Danny L. Garner; brothers, Tommie G. Jones Jr., Righteous Jones, Rocky Jones and David Jones; sisters, Jessie Mae Frierson, Grace Stephenson, Betty Joyce Webster and Juyana Jones; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Douglas J. Brown

Mr. Douglas J. Brown, 61, retired employee of Saturn and resident of the Mooresville Pike in Culleoka, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday at David Bogner Family Funeral Home in Elyria, Ohio. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

The Knoxville native was the son of the late Clarence H. Brown and Dorothy Mays Brown. He attended Knox County schools and served in the United States Air Force. He retired February 1, 2004 from the Saturn Plant in Spring Hill after 38 years with General Motors. Mr. Brown was a member of the U.A.W. and a former member of Loyal Order of the Moose in Elyria, Ohio. He enjoyed bowling, playing guitar and cards. He was a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include special friend, Jane Gaines of Columbia; five sons, Chaz (Melissa) Brown of Culleoka, Michael Brown and Wendell (Jennifer) Brown both of Elyria, Ohio, Douglas (Stacey) Brown, Jr. and Jimmy Brown, both of Wichita Falls,  Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Brenda (Gene) McCray of Newfoundland, Ohio, Mrs. Evelyn Hurst and Mrs. Francis Lawson both of Knoxville; two brothers Ken (Ruth) Brown of Ft. Smith, Ark., Raymond Brown of Sweetwater; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence "Bud" Brown and Robert Brown.

Martha Turner Simpson

Martha Turner Simpson, 66, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home with burial in Diana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

She was the daughter of the late Willis Howard and Gladys Opal Doss Turner.

She was a secretary for the Giles County Board of Education and a member of the Bethel Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Simpson of Elkmont, Ala.; a daughter, Karen Simpson of Elkmont, Ala.; brothers, Billy Turner of Bethel and Wayne Turner of California; sisters, Brenda Teegarden of Pulaski and Jean Sneed of LaFontaine, Ind.; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Troy Ray Yokley

Troy Ray Yokley, 39, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident in Bedford County.

Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home with burial in Liberty Hill Cemetery.

He was the son of Bobby Wayne Yokley of Campbellsville and the late Dainese Yokley.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include sons, Travis Yokley and Josh Yokley, both of Pulaski; daughters, Ashley Yokley, Brandy Yokley and Kimberly Yokley, all of Campbellsville; a stepdaughter, Angel Beth Wallace of Campbellsville; brothers, Tony Yokley and Ben Yokley, both of Campbellsville; sisters, Tammie Nutt of Lawrenceburg and Tonya Patton of Ethridge; and one granddaughter.

Judith Grace Uselton

Judith Grace Uselton, 65, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at her residence in Pulaski.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home with burial in Giles Memory Gardens.

She was the daughter of Edna Thorpe of McBurg.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband Butch Uselton of Pulaski; a son, Jeff Uselton of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Donna Bass of Pulaski; sisters, Bobby Joe Thorpe of McBurg and Jerry Thorpe of Delrose; and two grandchildren.

Eddie Hawkins

SANTA FE - Eddie Leslie Hawkins, 13, seventh-grade student at Santa Fe School and resident of Snow Creek Road, died Wednesday, Sept., 1, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident on the Santa Fe Pike. Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Santa Fe School Gymnasium with Donald Dark and Bill Marley officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery in the Theta Community. The family will visit with friends after 1 p.m. Sunday at the school. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Raymond and Myrtle Mills Hawkins; and maternal grandmother, Kathleen Whitley Kincaid. Pallbearers will be members of the Santa Fe High School FFA and Raymond Davis, Kelley Russell and Steve McCandless. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the 4-H Mane Gang, Duck River Fire & Basin Emergency Team, and students and faculty at Santa Fe School.

Edna Hawkins

Princella Mayes

Princella Mayes, 74, a resident of Booker Ridge Community, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Booker Ridge Original Church of God. Officiating at the "Celebration of Unending Love" service will be niece, Minister Regina Haynes; nephews, Brother Wade Russell, the Rev. Terence Mayes and the Rev. Keith Mayes; and brothers, Elder Thomas Sowell and Brother Roy Mayes. Her sister, Pastor Frances Orr, will deliver the Eulogy and "Final Rites."

Burial will be in Booker Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Roundtree, Napier and Ogilvies Columbia Funeral Home and from noon-1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. Clark and Mrs. Annie Mayes; and was also preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Everett Frierson, William James Mayes and Early Wesley Frierson. She was a member of Booker Ridge Original Church of God.

Survivors include brothers, Odell (Ruth) Mayes of Mt. Pleasant, Elmer Lee Mayes of Nashville, Roy Mayes of San Bernadino,  Calif., and Thomas (Carrie) Sowell of Muncie, Ind.; and sisters, Pauline Russell, Frances Orr, Grace (James) Russell and Hattie Russell, all of the Booker Ridge Community.

Irene Lujano

Mrs. Irene Doyle Lujano, 73, resident of Parkway Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004 at NHC of Columbia. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Cook County, Ill., she was the daughter of the late James Doyle and Katherine Teresa Shay Doyle. She was first married to Maxwell Wommack who died in 1976 and later married Gilbert Lujano who also preceded her in death in 1992. Survivors include two sons, Sam Wommack and Fred Wommack, both of Oregon; three daughters, Zelma Ann Mastesky of St. Paul, Minn., and Irene Wommack and Kathie Bowman, both of Columbia; one brother, John Doyle of Nevada; and 11 grandchildren.

Mrs. Evelyn Patterson

Mrs. Evelyn Frances Stills Patterson, 84, a resident of Pleasant Street in Mt. Pleasant and a former long-time resident of Delray Beach, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004 at Maury Regional Hospital. Services for Mrs. Patterson will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Polk Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Rick Points officiating. The family visited with friends from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. The Mt. Pleasant native was the daughter of the late T. and Lillie Lorene Cocke Stills. Mrs. Patterson was the widow of Buiel Thomas Patterson who died in 1984. She was a retired seamstress, and she loved sewing and word search puzzles. She was a member of the New Song Baptist Church. Mrs. Patterson is survived by her children, Judy Patterson, Richard "Rick" Patterson and James "Jim" Patterson, all of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Dorothy Luckett of Mt. Pleasant and Carlene (Howard) Brown of Columbia; her grandchildren, Peggy (Neal) Brady of Columbia, Bryan Patterson and Patrick Patterson both of Lakeworth, Fla., Frank (Joy) Mercado of Boynton Beach, Fla., Tony Mercado of Whiteville and J. T. Ringelstein of Columbia; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Patterson.

Mr. Frank 'June Bug' Matthews Jr.

Mr. Frank "June Bug" Moore Matthews Jr., 42, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at his residence on Morningside Lane in Columbia. Services for Mr. Matthews will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Williams Funeral Home of Columbia with Rick Points officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends from 3-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the son of Mary Sue Sullivan Matthews Mitchell and the late Frank Moore Matthews Sr. Mr. Matthews was a self-employed carpenter and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Justin Rhodes of Culleoka; a sister, Renee Matthews Bridges of Columbia; two uncles, Robert Sullivan and Johnnie Sullivan, both of Columbia; three aunts, Faye (J.C.) Gray and Peggy Sullivan, both of Columbia, and Dot Harold Glover of Pulaski; a half-sister, Beth Matthews of Columbia; and a special friend, Phyllis Vick of Columbia. Pallbearers will be Ray Beard, Johnnie Sullivan, Robert Sullivan, Marty Williamson, J.C. Gray and Danny Strickland.

Johnathon Wesley Tidrow

PULASKI - Johnathon Wesley Tidrow died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Carr & Erwin Funeral Home. He was the son of Michael and Masako Tidrow. Survivors, in addition to his parents, are grandparents, Thurman and Linda Tidrow of Pulaski and Kikuko Okame and the late Masao Okame of Tokyo, Japan; great-grandmother Lucy Smith of Pulaski; uncles, Hokuto and Masato Okame of Japan and aunt, Susan Tidrow Oliver.

Linda Mathis Bryant

LAWRENCEBURG - Linda Mathis Bryant, 59, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Crockett Hospital. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Neal Funeral Home with Jeff Foster and David Hawkins officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Lawrence County Memorial Gardens. The Lawrence County native was the daughter of Hughie Mathis White and the late Dalton Benjamin Mathis. She was a retired clerk with the Lawrenceburg Police Department, a member of First United Methodist Church and a former member of the Pilot Club. Survivors in addition to her mother include daughters, Kimberly McKnight of Mt. Pleasant and Kelly Bryant of Columbia; a sister, Roselyn Mathis Caperton of Charlotte; a granddaughter, a niece and a nephew.

Grace W. Chessor

CENTERVILLE - Grace W. Chessor, 90, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home with Donald Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the Oakmont Cemetery in Centerville. She was the daughter of the late A.C. and Julia Wherry. She was employed by Genesco and was a member of Centerville church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Chessor Survivors include sons, William Edward Chessor of Hohenwald and Wendell M. Chessor of Riverview, Minn; a sister, Mary Lee Weatherspoon of Centerville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Leonard McDougal

SCOTTS HILL - Leonard Lester McDougal, 65, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at his residence. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home with Colin Latin officiating. Interment icon will be in Scotts Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Survivors include his wife, Myra McDougal of Scotts Hill Community; a son, Mike McDougal of Scotts Hill; daughters, Heather McDougal of Scotts Hill, Angel Deitsch of Ohio, Jennifer Peek and Vicky McDougal, both of New York, and Colleen Scali of Florida; brothers, Aubrey McDougal, James McDougal and William McDougal, all of Scotts Hill Community, and Roscoe McDougal of Rhode Island; and six grandchildren.
