Tennessee, U.S., Delayed Birth Records, 1869-1909
Paul Wayne Brown

Mr. Paul Wayne Brown, 65, retired employee of Columbia Power & Water Systems and resident of 8th Avenue, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Vann officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., 2000 Richard Jones Road, Nashville, TN 37215. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Giles County native was the son of the late Gaius Van William Brown and Florence Tomerlin Brown. He was a 1959 graduate of Bodenham High School in Giles County. He served in the U.S. Army.

He was an avid sportsman and coached baseball for 10 years. Mr. Brown attended the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jean Holley Brown of Columbia; two sons, Gregg (Renee) Brown and Todd (Diane) Brown, both of Murfreesboro; three brothers, Billy (Geneva) Brown of Columbia; N.C. (Barbara) Brown and Arlin (Alice) Brown, both of Pulaski; four sisters, Mary Pinkston of Lewisburg, Gertrude Palmer of Murfreesboro, Eva Jane (W.H.) Palmer of Nashville and Theresa (Cecil) Price of Pulaski; two grandsons, Breland Brown and Beau Brown; two granddaughters, Holly Brown and Magen Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Chester Morris, Glen Nelson, Bill Jackson, Dr. Campbell Sowell, Carl Alsip and Buddy Dodson. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Columbia Power & Water Systems.

Maurice Coble

CENTERVILLE - Maurice Coble, 82, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at his residence.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Sunday and from noon-1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

He was a member and deacon of Centerville First Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a retired detective sergeant with the Detroit Police Department and the founder of Coble Realty in Centerville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jesse McClearen Coble; and a son, Wayne Coble.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Coble of Centerville; a son, Bruce Coble of Murfreesboro and two grandchildren.

George Richardson

LAWRENCEBURG - George Richardson, 76, of Lawrenceburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004 at Sikeston, Mo.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Pettus-Turnbo Funeral Home chapel with Marvin Noble and Wayne Seaton officiating.

Burial will be in Center Point Methodist Cemetery in Leoma.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

A native of Giles County, he was the son of the late Thomas L. and Ruby Forest Davis Richardson. He was a retired tool and dye maker at Pemco Aeroplex, a veteran of the Korean conflict as an Army sargent and a member of First Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Richardson of Lawrenceburg; sons, Dan Richardson of Sikeston, Mo., and Steve Richardson of Birmingham, Ala.; a daughter, Debbie Webster of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Kenneth Richardson of Pulaski; and three grandchildren.

Dudley Wayne Hunt

Dudley Wayne Hunt, 31, self-employed vinyl siding installer and resident of East 14th Street, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with the Rev. Wendell Allman and Mike Lawler officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will visit with friends from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Survivors include a daughter, Desiree Elizabeth Hunt of Columbia; a son, Calvin Tyler Hunt of Columbia; his mother, Elsie Steward of Columbia; two stepchildren, Mary Butler and J.R. Butler, both of Columbia; two brothers, Glenn Hunt and Clay Hunt, both of Columbia; his fiancE, Joann Morris of Columbia; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin C. Hunt.

Active pallbearers are Greg Cooper, J.R. Butler, Mark Black, Danny Eastep, Don Gilchrist, Tim Black and Tim Beard. Honorary pallbearers include Ted Chapman, Robert Steward, J. D. Russell and James Chapman.

Mrs. W.K. Thompson

Ethel Akin Mooney Thompson, 103, longtime resident of W. 7th Street, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at NHC Columbia.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at Polk Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Williamson, the Rev. Tommy Vann and the Rev. Jim Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia.

The Maury County native was born Nov. 29, 1900, to the late William and Etta Branch Akin. She received her early education in Nashville. She returned to Columbia in 1924 with her husband, the late W.K. Thompson, a well-known businessman and civic leader. They were married 52 years, until his death in 1974.

Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker who excelled in needlework, including crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery and delightful handmade dolls. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and longtime member of the Sunshine Class at the First United Methodist Church in Columbia.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Ann Thompson Willis of Columbia; a son, William K. Thompson Jr. and wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Jackson Thompson of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two granddaughters, Katie Willis Basanavicius of Columbia and Eleanor Ann Shaifer of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two grandsons, Chip Willis of Sarasota, Fla., and Mark Thompson of Oberentfelden, Switzerland; three great-grandchildren, Will Cannady of Columbia and Rachel Shaifer and Jennifer Shaifer, both of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two nieces, Mary Ann Hyde of Noblesville, Ind., and Mayetta Roberts of Franklin and special family friend, Vicki Stremming Willis of Tallahassee, Fla.

Pallbearers will be Will Cannady, Neil Basanavicius, Chip Willis, Mark Thompson, Rufus Ross, Jim Lochridge and Bedford Lochridge.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 222 W. 7th Street, Columbia, TN 38401.

The family would like to express their special thanks to the congregation of the First United Methodist Church, the First Presbyterian Church Women's Circle, employees and staff of NHC Columbia, Dr. Gaylon Harris, Charlie and Guy Odom for their thoughtfulness and concern over the years.

Mrs. Joyce Brooking Mashburn

Mrs. Joyce Brooking Mashburn, age 57, died Sunday, August 29, 2004, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Mrs. Mashburn was born in Porterdale, Ga. and made her home in Spring Hill. She was a secretary with Equitable Life Insurance Company.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Mashburn of Spring Hill; daughters, Jil Gowens and husband Robert of Lawrenceville, Ga., Mandi Lawson of Monroe, Ga., Terri Biggers and husband Doug of Covington, Ga., and Erin Hood and husband Hunter of Spring Hill; son, Dr. Scott. Mashburn and wife Kathi of Athens, Tenn.; parents, James and Kathleen Brooking of Covington, Ga.; sisters, Norma Moody and husband Henry of Newnan, Ga. and Peggy Stallings and husband Eddie of Loganville, Ga.; grandchildren; Tyler and Lacey Gowens, Leeanne, Dalton and Kylie Biggers, Cameron Hood, Kaitlin and Trenton Mashburn.

Services were conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home with Dan Dixon officiating. Visitation was from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday at Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, Covington, Ga.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Spring Hill Memorial Funeral Home with Mike Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Tillman Capes, Hunter Hood, Scott Mashburn, Doug Biggers, Rob Gowens and Wade Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Hank Moody, Mike Stallings, Chad Stallings, Wes Burgin, Sam Wiebe, Nursing Staff of Williamson Medical Center and Dr. William Reid. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to service Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Leukemia Society, 446 Metroplex Drive, Suite A-200, Nashville, TN 37211-3139.

John 'Jack' Leighton

John E. "Jack" Leighton, 70, of Lawrenceburg, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at his residence.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Neal Funeral Home with Colin Leighton officiating. Burial will be in Black Cemetery with full military honors.

The former Murray Ohio employee was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in Korea. He was a member of Fall River Church of Christ. He was the son of the late Mary L. Foster and John Emanuel Leighton Sr. He was also preceded in death by a son, Daniel Ray Leighton Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Reba Cox Leighton; sons, John Leighton and Jeffery Leighton Sr., and Timothy Leighton, all of Lawrenceburg; son, Timothy Leighton, Sr.; daughter, Kay Leighton McAlister of Nolensville; brother, Boyd Leighton of Lawrenceburg; sister, Mary Rau of Lawrenceburg; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dennis Shaffer

Dennis Edward Shaffer, 72, of Ethridge, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at his residence.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Neal Funeral Home with Father Richard Buchignani officiating. Burial will be in Ethridge Masonic Cemetery with full military honors.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Korea and the  Vietnam War. He was retired from the military police and was a school bus driver. He was a Protestant. He was the son of Lydia Poelhmann Shaffer of Ethridge and the late Fleet Shaffer.

Survivors in addition to his wife, include his mother, Carrie Rochelle Shaffer Brewer of Lawrenceburg; son, Mike Kurt Shaffer of Ethridge.

Hollis Elton Rochelle

Hollis Elton Rochelle, 81, of Centerville, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home with Bill Watts and Avery Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Campground Cemetery.

The U.S. Army World War II Veteran was a retired shop foreman with Goodyear and a farmer. He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church. He was the son of the late John Braudus and Mattie Lou Rochelle.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Rochelle of Centerville; sons, Darrell Rochelle of Columbia and Nicky Rochelle of Hohenwald; brothers, Clarence Rochelle and Lloyd Rochelle, both of Centerville and Fred Rochelle of Jefferson City; sisters, Helen Lively of Lenoir City, Nell Moman of Ravena, Ohio and Freda Unroe of Clifton Forge, Va.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sara Thompson

Sara Elizabeth Thompson, 58, of Minor Hill, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at St. Thomas Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Minor Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby Joe Thompson of Minor Hill; sons, Scott Thompson of Nashville and Kevin Thompson of Minor Hill; daughter, Trinna Thompson; brother, Roland Hargrove of Athens, Ala.; sisters, Faye Fly and Sharon Daniels, both of Pulaski; and a grandchild.

Wayne Scott

Buford Wayne Scott, 53, resident of Skyview Drive, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital following an extended illness.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Joe Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in Oakley Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Elmer Scott and Elise Massey Scott.

Survivors include two brothers, Rick (David Kelley) Scott and W. M. (Linda) Scott, both of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William Scott, Douglas Scott, Claude Scott and one sister, Bobbie Ann McCrary.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Mamie Ruth Cole

Mamie Ruth Cole, 66, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at her sons' residence in the Delina Community.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bills McGaugh Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Sunset Park Cemetery. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The Marshall County native was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Cindy Kay Cole and Patsy Mobbs, both of Lewisburg; sons, James Cole and Johnny Cole, both of Belfast, Donald Cole of the Delina Community, Terry Dewayne "Bill" Cole of Lewisburg, and Michael Cole of Nashville; brothers, Hershel Hargrove of Petersburg and John Hargrove of Lewisburg; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Lillie Mai Duncan

Lillie Mai Duncan, 84, of Lewisburg, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, in Marshall Medical Center.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bills McGaugh Funeral Home with Jim Floyd officiating. Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Whorley Cemetery.

The Marshall County native was the daughter of the late George and Inez Rodgers. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jim Willie Duncan.

Survivors include her son, Michael Wayne Duncan of Petersburg, Mary Ann Mullins of Lewisburg, and Pamela Kay Blaylock of Lewisburg; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
