Nita White Mitchell

Mrs. Mary Juanita "Nita" White Mitchell, 89, former longtime resident of North Bigby Drive in Columbia, died Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at Brakebill Nursing Home in Knoxville.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday at Polk Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ronnie Meek officiating. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Limestone County, Ala. native was the daughter of the late William L. White and Etta Mae Thornton White. She was married for 62 years to Allen Thomas Mitchell who preceded her in death on June 24, 1999. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Dewayne (Mary Martha) Mitchell of Knoxville; two grandchildren, Kathrine (Anthony) Brown and Dustin Mitchell; one half-sister, Imogene Holt; two half-brothers, Bobby Dale White and Carlos White; and several nephews and nieces including Juaneece McKee (Jim) Bass of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Steven Owen Bailey

Steven Owen Bailey, 45, resident of Amber Lynn Circle, died Thursday, August 19, 2004, at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

According to Steven's wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Liver Transplant Program at Vanderbilt Medical Center, 1211 22nd Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37232. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Willard Gregory Bailey and Annie Walker Allen Bailey. He was a 1978 graduate of Columbia Central High School and earned his Associates Degree in Interior Design in Huntsville, Ala. The former resident of Athens, Alabama was an inspired artist and former interior designer for Trees & Trends in Huntsville, Ala. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include longtime friend, John Chambers of Columbia; four sisters, Ina R. Fitzgerald, Mary F. (Frank) James, Gladys E. Fox, and Carolyn A. Fleming, all of Columbia; two brothers, Ernest Allen Bailey of Atlanta, Georgia; James Mark Bailey of Mobile, Alabama; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Willard Gregory Bailey, Jr.

The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Thomas Dake and staff and Dr. Erik Ness.

Jon E. Hastings

BRENTWOOD - Jon E. Hastings, Nashville attorney and civic leader, died Saturday, August 21, 2004, after a protracted illness. He was 45. He is survived by his wife, former Columbia resident, Emily Harmon Hastings; and daughters, Camden and Tinsley of Brentwood; parents, Walter and Vivian Hastings of Dyersburg; and brother, Lee Hastings of Tampa, Fla.

Mr. Hastings was a member of the law firm of Boult Cummings Conners and Berry PLC and served on the firm's Board of Governors. He was recognized in the national publication, The Best Lawyers in America 2003-2004. A native of Dyersburg he received B.S. and J.D. degrees from University of Tennessee. He also received an A.A. degree from Florida College.

Mr. Hastings was the recipient of the 2003 "Good Guy Award" from the Women's Political Caucus and "Volunteer of the Year" for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. He was also recognized for leadership as one of Nashville's "Top 40 Under 40" by Business Nashville magazine and received the Distinguished Service Award from the state Democratic Party.

Mr. Hastings served on the Metro Stormwater Management Commission and acted as Legal Counsel to the Tennessee Democratic Party. He also served as the finance chair for U.S. Representative Bob Clement's bid for the United States Senate. Mr. Hastings served on the boards of The Friends of the Public Library; the Nashville City Club; the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association; the Nashville Downtown Partnership; the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce; the Frank G. Clement Foundation; Visions with Infinite Possibilities; and the Marcus Robertson Children's Foundation. He also served as Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Real Estate/Environmental Liability News. He was a member of the Tennessee Association of Business; Nashville Rotary Club; the David Lipscomb University Business Advisory Council, and of Leadership Brentwood. He was a co-chairman of the Men's Event, benefiting the Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation. He was active in the American Bar Association (ABA), the Tennessee Bar Association and the Nashville Bar Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of Prime Trust Bank. He was a member of the Brentwood Hills Church of Christ..

Pallbearers are: Steve Armistead, Tony Arrata, Joe Barker, Ben Cundiff, Ross Kaufmann, Butch Lambert, Gary Ledbetter, Jim Murphy, Scott Owen, Michael Reynolds and Jeff Whitehorn. Honorary pallbearers are Jon's fellow members of the law firm of Boult Cummings Conners and Berry; fellow Nashville Rotarians; and Sunday school class members at Brentwood Hills Church of Christ.

Visitation with the family will be held from 4-7 p.m. Monday and from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday at the Brentwood Hills Church of Christ, 5120 Franklin Road. The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made to the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center.

PFC Jeremy Ray Allen

CULLEOKA - Pfc. Jeremy Ray Allen, 22, attached to the 771st Division of the Tennessee National Guard since November, 2003 and a resident of Phinny Murphy Road in the Culleoka Community, died Saturday at Maury Regional Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with the Rev. Dwain Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the 771st Division of the Tennessee National Guard. The family will visit with friends after 3 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Payton and Keely Allen Trust Fund, c/o AmSouth Bank, Shadybrook Mall, 884 South James Campbell Boulevard, Columbia. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was a 2000 graduate of Columbia Central High School and currently attending Nashville Auto Diesel College. He attended the Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Summer Michelle Wentzel Allen of Culleoka; his mother, Sherry Lynn Baker (Tommy) Underwood of Columbia; his father, Randy (Dawn Skinner) Allen of Columbia; a daughter, Keely Michelle Allen of Culleoka; a son, Payton Alexzander Allen of Culleoka; a sister, Delaney Allen of Columbia; two step-sisters, Jamie (Adam) Brown of Smyrna and Tonya (Michael) Goodloe of Nashville paternal grandmother, Shirley Whitwell Allen of Columbia; mother and father-in-law, Terry and Dennis Wentzel of Columbia; aunts, Brenda Westmoreland of Owens Crossroads, Alabama, Sherrie Malugin of Columbia, Rita Rawdon of Hohenwald, Georgeanna Allen of Columbia; uncles, Rusty Baker, Keith "OOP" Baker and Joey Allen, all of Columbia; several cousins. He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Betty Brunson "Granny" Massey and Robert Baker; and paternal grandfather, Howard Allen.

Active pallbearers are Jason Schwartz, Paul Bedgood, Clint Uptain, JoJo Allen, Jason Alexander, Justin Wentzel, Rusty Baker, Jaren Atkins, Jake Malugin and Jeff McCord. Honorary pallbearers include members of he 771st Division of the Tennessee National Guard and classmates at Nashville Auto Diesel College.

Lois Gene Runions

MT. PLEASANT - Miss Lois Gene Runions, 56, resident of McAnally Road in Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, August 20, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Hueston Marshall and Randy Kersey officiating. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery in Lewis County. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Lewis County native was the daughter of the late Floyd Runions and Florene Churchwell Runions. She was a member of Beech Hill Church of Christ.

Survivors include one sister, Joyce F. Runions of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Franklin F. Runions of Mt. Pleasant; one aunt, Lou Vada (Herbert) Parrish of Linden, Tennessee; three uncles, John A. (Sarah) Churchwell of Columbia; Newton R. "Bob" Churchwell of Lexington, Tenn.; Elihue Runions of Hohenwald; and several cousins.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Odus F. Campbell

PULASKI - Odus F. Campbell, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Crockett Hospital.

Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carr and Erwin funeral Home with burial in Giles Memory Garden. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Fund or East Hill Church of Christ Building Fund.

He was the son of the late Frank and Rebecca Smotherman Campbell. He was a retired school bus driver for the Giles County School System and a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Willodean Campbell of Lawrenceburg; a son, Terry Campbell of Lawrenceburg; a sister, Velma Stafford of Pulaski; and two grandsons.

Raymond E. Hancock

Raymond Eugene Hancock, 54, a resident of Dimple Court in Columbia, passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.

A memorial service for Mr. Hancock will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the home of his daughter on Dimple Court in Columbia. Williams Funeral Home of Columbia is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Ocala, Fla., he was the son of Evelyn Hancock of Florida and the late Alfrince (A.J.) Hancock. He was operations manager at Stauffer Chemicals.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by three daughters, Kimberly (Jerry) Coulter of Columbia, Stephanie (Justis) Kivari of Lawrenceburg and Heather (Wayne) Sullivan of Columbia; four granddaughters, Courtney Hancock, Caitlynn Coulter, Brianna Coulter and Elizabeth Coulter, all of Columbia; a grandson, Tyler Locke of Columbia; three brothers, Alfred Hancock, Cecil Hancock and Wesley Hancock, all of Florida and a sister, Thelma Hendershot of  Oklahoma.

Hazel Ruth Grinnell

LAWRENCEBURG - Hazel Ruth Grinnell, 90, of Lawrenceburg, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Donald Goodrum officiating at Pettus-Turnbo Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in the Lawrence County Memorial Gardens.

She was a homemaker and member of the Calvary Hill Church of God.

Survivors include her son, Nathan Grinnell of Lawrenceburg; daughter, Gail Cothern of Lawrenceburg; sister, Elizabeth Barnett of Giles County; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jimmy Wade Grinnell, Sr.

Jimmy Wade Grinnell, Sr., 59, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Neal Funeral Home with Brother Donald Goodrum and Brother Tony Gordy officiating. Burial will be in Lawrence County Memorial Gardens.

A Lawrence County native, Grinnell was the son of the late Ann Kelly Grinnell and Virgil Grinnell of Lawrenceburg. He was a plumbing and electrical contractor and a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club and a millennium member of the National Rifle Association.

In addition to his father, he is survived by wife, Glynda Gale Smith Grinnell of Lawrenceburg; son, Jim Grinnell, Jr. of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; daughter, Kim Grinnell Potts of Lawrenceburg; brothers, Jack Grinnell of Lawrenceburg and Jerry Grinnell of Summertown; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Allie Polk Williams

Mrs. Allie Beatrice Polk Williams, 84, of Columbia died Wednesday August 18, 2004 at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Church Of God at 1186 Old Highway 99. The body will Lie-in-State at V. K. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, until time for services. Burial is in Friendship Family Cemetery.

A native of Maury County in the Gowdin Community she was the daughter of the late Lem A. and Ellen Medley Polk. She attended the Maury County school system and was a member of Bethel Church Of God where she served as President of the Sanctuary Choir, Secretary of the Missionary Society.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William H. Polk, Sr. and James E. Polk; Three sisters, Dora A. Green, Essie L. Johnson and Elease Polk; her husband Finis Williams and a nephew they raised, James Finis Polk.

Survivors include 14 nieces, two nephews, several great and great great-nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Maude Byrum Haynes

Maude Byrum Haynes, 93, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004.

Services were conducted Saturday at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial was in Anderson Memorial Garden.

She was the daughter of the late William Martin and Nancy Foster Byrum and the wife of the late William Austin Haynes. She also was proceeded in death by grandchild, Pamela Elliot.

Survivors include sons, David Hayne of Clinton and Charles Haynes of Oak Ridge; daughters, Shirley Beeson of Knoxville and Diane Tidwell of Houston,  Texas; six grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Edward Beuerlein

Edward A. Beuerlein, 90, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Scared Heart Catholic Church with Father Richard Buchignani officiating. Visitation will be from 4:30-8 p.m. Sunday with Rosary at 7 p.m. at Neal Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Lawrence County.

A Lawrence County native, he was the son of the late Louisa Ehemann and George J. Beuerlein. He was retired from Beuerlein Brothers Farm Supply. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, ASCS & Soil Conservation Board and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by wife, Rosina Brink Beuerlein of Lawrenceburg; sons, James E. Beuerlein of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Alan F. Beuerlein of Tucson, Az. and Harold J. Beuerlein of Waverly; daughters, Mary E. Beuerlein Mitchell of Nashville and Margaret S. Beuerlein Reeves of Loretto; sister, Christine Beuerlein Kamarad of Lawrenceburg; brother, Charles H. Beuerlein of Loretto; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mrs. John Edward Norton

Mrs. Rose Polly Denson Norton, 76, widow of John Edward Norton and retired dietician for the Maury County Board of Education, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004 at her residence on Oakdale Drive.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the McMillan Funeral Home in Booneville, Miss. with the Rev. Dan Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Little Brown Baptist Cemetery in Booneville, Miss. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4 - 8 p.m. at McMillan Funeral Home in Booneville, Miss. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors in charge of local arrangements. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.

A native of Prentice County, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late John Dewey Denson and Flora Bennett Denson.

Survivors include a daughter, Fay (Gary) Hallmark of Decatur, Ala.; two sons, Jim (Karen) Norton of Mt. Pleasant and Rick (Trina) Norton of Cleveland; a sister, Lorene Wax of Booneville, Miss.; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul) Still, Jeffrey (Renee) Norton and Elizabeth Ann Norton; several nieces and nephews.
