Ores Butler

Mr. Ores Butler, 78, retired butcher and resident of Davis Avenue, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Wendell Robinson and Kirk Brothers officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.

The Adair County, Ky., native was the son of the late John Butler and Cappie Mitchell Butler. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a former member of Eastside Church of Christ and more recently a member of Graymere Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jackie Doggett Butler of Columbia; one son, Glen Butler of Columbia; two daughters, Mrs. Lynda (David) Rash of Columbia, Mrs. Lydia Shivers of Fayette, Ala.; one daughter-in-law, Jan Butler of Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Page of Columbia, Ky.; Mrs. Clarice Willis of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren, Shannon Lambert, Brandy Daughrity, Charlie Rash, Stacie Shivers, Gerald Shivers; and three great-grandchildren, Maddux Lambert, Kasey Lotts and Michael Lotts.

Pallbearers will be David Rash, Charlie Rash, Richard Lambert and Jason Daughrity. Honorary pallbearers will be Elmer Lusk, Jack White, Tim Anderson, Dr. Gaylon Harris and Dr. Erik Iversen.

Roger Dale Smith

LAWRENCEBURG - Roger Dale Smith, 50, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Baptist Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Neal Funeral Home with Jerry Geho officiating. Burial will be in Lawrence County Memorial Gardens.

He was the son of the late Tom G. Smith and Margaret Smith Thompson. He was disabled.

Survivors include a daughter, Christy Brown of Alabaster, Ala.; a son, Jason Smith of Rockford, Ill.; sisters, Ella Medley and Linda Thompson, both of Lawrenceburg; and one grandson.

Carrie Mai Adkins

CENTERVILLE - Carrie Mai Adkins, 29, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, in Nunnelly.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home with Bobby Kelley officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery in Bon Aqua.

She was the daughter of Benny Baker and Jean Welch. She was a homemaker.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Matthew Adkins of Nunnelly; sons, Steven Baker, Anthony Daniels and Matthew Wad Adkins II, all of Nunnelly; daughters, Angelia Daniels, Elizabeth Adkins and Cheradon Adkins, all of Nunnelly; brothers, Steve Baker of Joelton and James Baker of Columbia; and sisters, Teresa Daniels of Lyles and Beverly Baker and Joyce Baker, both of Nashville.

Harriette Jones Quin

Mrs. Harriette Jones Quin, 88, resident of Athenaeum St., died Thursday, August 5, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Thomas Wilson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home.

Born at Bethel Place plantation in Maury County, Mrs. Quin was the daughter of the late Clark Jones and Kate Latta Gordon Wilkes. She was the wife of the late Major Oliver Benton Quin III. She was educated at the Columbia Female Institute and Chatham Hall and was a graduate of Stuart Hall in Virginia. On the opening day of World War II, she was rescued after being torpedoed in the Canadian steamship Athenia. During the war, she served as an official of the American Red Cross. She served as President of the James K. Polk Auxiliary and was a board member of the Maury County Historical Society. She was a lifelong Episcopalian and the longest-term communicant of St. Peter's Church.

Survivors include three sons, Oliver Benton Quin IV of Venice Beach,  Calif., Clark Jones Quin of Boston, Mass., Richard Hilary Quin of Knoxville; one brother, Dr. James Wallace Wilkes Jr. of Columbia; one nephew, James Wallace Wilkes III, and three nieces Helen Shapard Hickman, Kay Shapard Curtis and Dr. Nancy Wilkes.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Clark Jones Shapard.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Vestry of St. Peter's Church.

Phillip Hasting 'Phil' McAlister

Mr. Phillip Hasting "Phil" McAlister, 67, resident of Ashwood Road in Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, August 5, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

A memorial service for Mr. McAlister will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Reverend Thomas S. Wilson officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. John's Episcopal Churchyard. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 1-3 p.m. in the church parrish hall. Williams Funeral home in Columbia will be in charge of the arrangements.

The Lincoln County native was the son of the late James L and Martha Hasting McAlister. He was the husband of Sylvia Smith McAlister of Mt. Pleasant. He was a retired salesman for Lovell Office Machine and a former owner and operator of McAlister Office Products. Mr. McAlister was member of Maury County Chamber of Commerce, Past President of Maury County Arts Guild, former member of the Columbia Kiwanis Club, avid golfer and loved all sports including UT football. He served in the Tennessee National Guard. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in which he was active in the church choir.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by Children, Lisa Hull of Mt. Pleasant, Phillip H. (Dana) McAlister Jr. of Knoxville and Matt (Amy) McAlister of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, James L. (Virginia) McAlister of Brentwood; his grandchildren, Mac Hull of Mt. Pleasant, Wyatt McAlister and Sam McAlister both of Knoxville, Maddie McAlister and Josie McAlister both of Mt. Pleasant; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Strubbe, Robert Stockard, Ronald Church, Mac Hull, Phil Lovell, Jim McAlister, Mitch McAlister, Milt Blount, Employees of Lovell Office Machines, Oncologist Associates at Maury Regional Hospital and Radiology Department at Maury Regional Hospital.

Memorials may be made to your charity-of-choice.

Austin Bullion

HOHENWALD - Austin Bullion, 71, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at his residence in Hohenwald.

Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home with Richard Tate officiating. Burial was in Downey Cemetery.

He was the son of the late Clebert Bullion and Edna Hooper Bullion. He was a self-employed contractor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Hickerson Bullion; a brother, Frank Bullion; and two sisters, Juanita Cox and Mary Helen Erlandson.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Sisco Bullion of Hohenwald; sons, Randy Bullion of Pleasantville and Mike Bullion of Culleoka; a stepson, Dennis Johnson of Hendersonville; four grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Charlie Ervin Clark

LEWISBURG - Charlie Ervin Clark, 77, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Williamson Medical Center in Franklin.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at London Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Burial was in Lone Oak Cemetery.

He was the son of the late Joseph and Virginia Taylor Clark. He was retired as a spot welder with Inter-City Corporation. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany and attended the Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Rebecca Cannon Clark of Lewisburg; daughters, Marie Clark Patterson of Murfreesboro and Sherry Clark Park of Lewisburg; brothers, Alfred Clark and Fay Clark, both of Rockvale and Eugene Clark of Lewisburg; sisters, Myrtle Chick of Brentwood, Gladys Rowland of Eagleville and Betty Alderice of Lewisburg; and three granddaughters.

Goldie Luella Scantland Cockrell

LAWRENCEBURG - Goldie Luella Scantland Cockrell, 87, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at Crockett Hospital.

Services were conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Neal Funeral Home with Smokey McDonald, Brian Manning and Kenny Isbell officiating. Visitation was from 4 -9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial was in Brace Cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Bryant Scantland, Tom Hill and Maggie Luella Whetston Scantland Hill. She was a homemaker and member of Freedom Hill Bible Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard S. Cockrell; sons, Shearld N. Cockrell and Jimmy D. Cockrell; brother, Norman Scantland; and sister, Nellie Dawes.

Survivors include daughters, Jewel D. Cockrell Isbell and husband Jessie, Ruby N. Cockrell Manning, Margie S. Cockrell Williams and husband Charles N., and Wanda G. Cockrell Moore, all of Lawrenceburg, Linda S. Cockrell Bryson and husband Larry of Summertown and Connie S. Cockrell Davis and husband, Barry of Pulaski; daughter-in-law, Betty F. Holt Cockrell; sons, William L. Cockrell and wife, Donna L. Smith Cockrell of Lawrenceburg, Bobby G. Cockrell and wife, Wanda M. Cole Cockrell of Columbia, Ernest S. Cockrell, Larry E. Cockrell and wife, Joyce M. Perry Cockrell, Roy S. Cockrell and Jerry W. Cockrell, all of Summertown, Danny L. Cockrell and wife, Debbie Grooms Cockrell of Ethridge and Stevie E. Cockrell and wife, Judy K. Perry Cockrell of Loretto; 43 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Amos E. 'Buddy' Davidson

Mr. Amos E. "Buddy" Davidson, 74, retired meat cutter for forty years, a number of years at Lovett's Market, and a resident of the Iron Bridge Road, died Thursday, August 5, 2004, at Columbia Care and Rehab.

Services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakes & Nichols with Billy Felker officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family visited with friends from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Columbia Care & Rehab, 1410 Trotwood Avenue, Columbia, 38401. The Maury County native was the son of the late Logan Davidson and Rosa Lee Day Davidson. He was a member of the Scribner's Mill Church of Christ. He was married October 15, 1948 to the former Mary Christine Derryberry who preceded him in death December 19, 1994.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda G. (Dexter) Hunter of Columbia, Dawn (Billy) Thompson of Murfreesboro, Shawn (Ronnie) Crumley of Kingsport; a son, Randy (Nancy) Davidson of Columbia; a sister, Margaret Poteete of Lewisburg; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary Martin; a grandson, Christopher Armstrong Hunter; four brothers, Merritt Davidson, Grady Davidson, John Davidson and Gene Davidson.

Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Thomas Pennock, Doris Lovett, Don Derryberry and the Staff of Columbia Care & Rehab.

Bessie Riley Wiley

Mrs. Bessie Riley Wiley, 91, widow of Clarence S. Wiley and a resident of River Heights in Columbia died Thursday, August 5, 2004, in NHC/Hillview.
Services for Mrs. Wiley was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with the Rev. Bob Adair and the Rev. Richard Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the daughter of the late John and Isibell Davis Riley. Mrs. Wiley was a homemaker and a charter member of the Highland Park Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Billy) Benefield of Columbia; her grandchildren, Jeff (Kim) Benefield of Columbia, Steve (Tracy Ann) Benefield of Murfreesboro, Jan (James ) Hanvy of Spring Hill, Alicia (Luis) Flores of Nashville and Keith Luttrell of Columbia; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; a son-law, Charles Luttrell; a sister, Mrs Matt Parker of Hickman, Ky.; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Ann Luttrell; two sisters, Annie Nall and Ruth Ashworth; seven brothers, Bob, Woody, Lovell, Walter, Albert, George and Marvin Riley.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Benefield, Steve Benefield, Keith Luttrell, Charles Wiley, Jimmy Hanvy, Ronnie Nall, Bobby Dan Parker, Loyd Wiley, John Riley and Wayne Riley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lily Davis Sunday School Class at Highland Park Baptist Church, Gene Riley, Butch Prosser, Mike Prosser, J.W. and Audrey Scott, Perry and Kathleen Rogers, Ruth Johnson, Delano and Lucretia Benefield, Billy Joe Riley, Mildred Richards, Dr. Gentry and Dr. James Slandzicki.

Memorials may be made to the Highland Park Baptist Church, 1800 Highland Avenue, Columbia, TN 38401.

Marc Oliver Porter

ATLANTA, Ga. - Marc Oliver Porter, 33, of Atlanta, Ga., died Tuesday, July 31, 2004, in Atlanta, Ga.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, in Atlanta, Ga. with Murray Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of Gayle Oliver and Leontine Bush Porter and the grandson of Mrs. Mildred Porter and the late Horace O. Porter of Columbia.

His formal education included Therrell High School, Alabama State University, Southern University (Baton Rouge) Boston school of Barbering, Georgia School of Barbering and Textile School.

Survivors include his parents, Gayle and Leontine Porter of Atlanta, Ga.; grandmother, Mildred Porter of Columbia; brother, Maria DeAndre Porter of Atlanta, Ga., and other relatives and friends.

William 'Tubby' Simpson

LAWRENCEBURG - William Earnest "Tubby" Simpson, 56, of Lawrenceburg, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at the VA Hospital in Murfreesboro.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pettus-Turnbo Funeral Home with Lucius Wallace officiating. Internment will be in the West Point Cemetery.

The Lawrence County native was the son of the late Whitney and Judith Marie Welch Simpson. He was employed by the State of Tennessee. He was a U.S. Army Veteran during the  Vietnam War. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his sons, Steven Simpson of Nashville; Demtrius Simpson and Willie Simpson, both of Denver,  Colo.; brothers, Roland Simpson, Joseph Simpson, Floyd Simpson, all of Lawrenceburg, and Edward Simpson of San Diego,  Calif.; sisters, Mary Wilson, Frances Jones, Cassie Martin, all of Lawrenceburg, Alice Christmon of Chicago, Ill., and Florence Derrick of Nashville; and two grandchildren.

Thomas Gaylord Wilkins

Thomas Gaylord Wilkins, 87, former Columbia resident, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in Toledo Hospital.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, with the Rev. Wynston Dixon officiating. His ashes were interred at his wife's grave at Maplewood Cemetery in Ida, Mich., with the Rev. Marilynn Schroeder officiating.

He was the son of the late Thomas G. Wilkins and Frances (Porter) Wilkins. He received his wings in the Royal Canadian Air Force in May 1941 and received his wings. He transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corp. after Pearl Harbor and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. He entered Georgetown University after World War II ended and was recalled to service during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from the University of Toledo. He was Vice-president of M.P. Wilkins Supply Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecil Deshler Wilkins.

Survivors include his brother, Morgan Wilkins; and other relatives and friends.

Earl Malone

Pulaski - Earl Clark Malone, 79, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at NHC Lewisburg.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Bennett-May Funeral Home with Wendall Wilburn officiating.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Sunday.

Burial will be in Giles Memory Gardens.

He was the son of the late William Earl and Iva Mae Curtis Malone and preceded in death by his wife, Johnny Sue Walls Malone; son, James Earl Malone; daughter, Earlene Malone; brother, W.R. Malone; sister, Dorothy Hodges, and one grandson.

Survivors include daughter, Kimberly Malone; daughter, Connie Mitchell; son, Dennis Malone; son, Donnie Ray Malone; six nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Ann Dugger

Pulaski - Dorothy Ann Dugger, 79, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Pulaski NHC.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bennett-May Chapel with Linda Tidrow officiating.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Bennett-May & Co. Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Buford and Roberta Hill and preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Dugger; brother W.J. Hill, and sister, Carolyn Harris.

Survivors include her sister, Rebecca Jackson, of Minor Hill; sister, Juanita Jones, of Pulaski; brother, Buford Hill, of Pulaski; and several nieces and nephews.

Jerry Kenneth Crowell

HOHENWALD - Jerry Kenneth Crowell, 69, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Perry Community Hospital in Linden.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home Inc., with Jimmy Garner and Donald Duncan officiating.

Burial will follow in the Swiss Cemetery in Hohenwald.

He was a native of Old Hickory and was preceded in death by his mother, Lorell Crowell.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Crowell of Hohenwald; father, Leslie Crowell of Hohenwald; sons, Ken Crowell and Lance Crowell, both of Hohenwald; stepsons, Shawn Murphy of Pearl, Miss., and Russ Murphy and James Murphy of Carthage, Miss.; stepdaughters, Shannon Pilgrim of Carthage, Miss., and Ashley Garner of Hohenwald; a brother, William Crowell of Hohenwald; a sister, Annette Wheeler of Madison; and 12 grandchildren.

Lee A. England

The Honorable Lee A. England, 56, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Public memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lawrence County Courthouse.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the courthouse.

Memorials are requested to Today Count or the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

He was the son of the late L.A. England and Dorothy Harwell England of Ethridge.

He was sessions judge of Lawrence County, member of the Methodist faith, American Legion, Lions Club and the Tennessee Bar Association.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Lucky Hill England of Ethridge; sons, Adam England of Ethridge, Jeff Pinckley of Warner Robins, Ga., Paul Pinckley of Olive Branch, Miss., and Jacob Pinckley of Memphis; a daughter, Rebecca Wunner of Ethridge; a sister, Lisa Pace of Ethridge; and six grandchildren.

Johnny Charles Davidson

Johnny Charles Davidson, 58, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at NHC Hillview.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday from Baxter Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Claude Bellfont officiating. Burial will be in Camp Ground Cemetery. The body will lie in state Tuesday at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry  Washington Davidson. He was a member of Bellfont Tabernacle. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Larry Marks.

Survivors include sons, Johnny (Tyann) Davidson and Timothy Marks; daughters, Sabrina (Galen) White, Debra (Ras) Owens, Amy Davidson and Enricka Davidson; a brother, Marshall Davidson; sisters, Mary Davidson, Polly Hunt and Pauline Garnes; and 19 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be nephews and cousins.
