Lynda Lawson

LAWRENCEBURG - Lynda Louise Lawson, 55, of Lawrenceburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be conducted at noon Monday at First United Methodist Church with Jeff Foster officiating.

She was the daughter of the late Caleb and Delores Williamson Smith. She was a member of the United States Humane Society, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals and the World Wildlife Federation. She was a professional secretary and administrative assistant with Hewlett-Packard.

Survivors include her husband, Kevin D. Lawson of Lawrenceburg; a stepson, Joshua Lawson of California; stepdaughters, Anita Lawson of Lawrenceburg and Christa Lawson of California; and a brother, James Smith of California.

Ernestine Hawkins Godwin

Mrs. Rachel Ernestine Hawkins Godwin, 72, former longtime resident of the Santa Fe Community, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at noon Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Wallace and the Rev. Jimmy Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Santa Fe Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Ernest Hawkins and Jewell Walters Hawkins. She was married to Arvel Lee Godwin who preceded her in death on March 24, 1999. Mrs. Godwin was a member of Craft United Methodist Church and the Mynders FCE.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Amette (Greg) Zapel of Columbia; two grandchildren, Mrs. Stephanie (Kevin) Huffman of Columbia and Phil (Jan) Sutherland of Santa Fe; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Huffman, Rachel Sutherland, Megan Huffman, Aidan Huffman and Lane Sutherland; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Geneva (Wayne) Walters of Columbia and Mrs. Norma Jean Godwin of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Claude Johnson, Henry Warf, Lloyd Edward Warf, Frank Dodson, Jack Gaskill and Bobby Harris.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of John McIntyre Sunday School Class and men of Craft United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Vernon Emmitt

MT. PLEASANT - Mrs. Mary Vernon Judkins Emmitt, 78, a resident of South College Street in Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Hidden Acres Health Care.

A memorial service for Mrs. Emmitt will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Williams Mt. Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. J.C. Christian officiating. Burial will be in the Arlington Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Sunday at the funeral home.

The Iron City native was the daughter of the late Edgar Rice and Annie Pearl Tucker Judkins. She was the wife of William C. "Bill" Emmitt. She was a former long-time resident of Tampa, Fla., and many other cities in the South. She was retired as a medical transcriptionist. She loved music, books and played the piano. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Jayne (Jim) Andron of Philadelphia, Pa., and William Jonathan "Jon" Emmitt and Kay Suzanne "Suzy" Emmitt, both of Mt. Pleasant; two grandsons, David Andron of San Francisco,  Calif., and Matthew Andron of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Annie Sue McCoy of Columbus, Ohio, Ruth Pipkin of Knoxville and Lois (Gerald) Stewart of Harrisburg, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Marion Winson Judkins of Groveland, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Carol Ann Judkins Meek, Richard Judkins, Mack McCoy, Bob McCoy, Kevin McCoy, Donna Pipkin Raines and David Pipkin.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Roy Judkins.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Staff of Hidden Acres Health Care.

James Emerson Davis

WOODBURN, Ky. - James Emerson Davis, 28, of Woodburn, Ky., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Bowling Green Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with visitation one hour prior to service. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Prospect Cemetery.

The New York native was the son of Steven J. Davis and Sandra L. Davis of Pulaski, N.Y. He was a design engineer with General Motors.

Survivors in addition to his parents include his wife, Angela Davis of Woodburn, Ky.; daughters, Allie and Norah Davis of Woodburn, Ky.; a sister, Kari Davis of Woodburn, Ky.; grandparents, Robert and Lois Davis and Barbara Deyo.

Bennett-May Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Rev. Richard Gammon

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Rev. Richard Rhea Gammon, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the First Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Gammon, son of the late Rev. Dr. Samuel Rhea and Clara Gennett Moore Gammon, was a native of Lavras, Minas, Brazil. In 1936, he moved to North Carolina at age 16. He received a B.A. degree from Davidson College and received both his B.D. and Masters of Theology degrees from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va.

He first served as Pastor of two Presbyterian churches in Duplin County for one year, and as Supply Pastor of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville for one year.

He pastored the First Presbyterian Church in Dunn, N.C., for 10 years and the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia for three years, prior to moving to Greenville in 1958 where he served the First Presbyterian Church until his retirement in 1985.

After his retirement, he was named Pastor Emeritus, and served as Interim Pastor for a number of churches in Eastern North Carolina. He continued to provide pastoral care for members of this community until his death.

The Rev. Gammon served as Director of amateur athletics at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games for a number of years, and received the Agnes MacRae Morton Award in 1987. He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, the New Hope Presbytery and the St. Andrews Society of North Carolina.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Flora MacDonald Gammon; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Gennett Coriolano and Miss Willie Humphries Gammon.

Surviving are a daughter, Flora MacDonald Gammon Dall and husband, John, of Waynesville, N.C.; 12 step-grandchildren; 25 step-great-grandchildren; four step great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Audley Anderson Gammon of Petropolis, Brazil, and the Rev. Joseph Moore Gammon of Knoxville.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1400 S. Elm Street, Greenville, NC 27858; or to the Gammon Educational Institute in Lavras, Minas, Brazil, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 1400 S. Elm Street, Greenville, NC 27858.

Vera May Thompson

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home with Bill McDonald officiating.

Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in the Wade-Peeler Cemetery in Centerville.

She was the daughter of the late William Joe Shepard and Emma Dora Stephens and was a native of Centerville. She was retired from teh Levis Strauss factory.

She was preceded in death by husbands Robert Mayberry and William Thompson.

Survivors include daughter, JoAnn McEachern of Nashville; sisters Frances Nell Chandler and Mary Tom Bates of Centerville; brothers, Charlie Shepard and Joe Shepard of Centerville; and one grandson.

Elton Hershel Smith

Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Neal Funeral Home with Ricky Cox officiating.

Burial will be in Lawrence County Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceburg.

He was the son of the late William Smith and Emma Butler Smith. He was a retired farmer and from Murray Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Kitchens Smith of Ethridge; daughters, Joanne Kennemer of Lawrenceburg and Janice Egly of Ethridge; sister, Myrtle West of Lawrenceburg; five grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Thomas Edward Cross

Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, at McDonald Funeral Home with Joe Paul Bryant and Gene Durham officiating. Burial will follow in Williams Cemetery in Pleasantville.

He was the son of the late Joel Jasper and Le Anna Tanner Cross. He was a Tuber Operator in manufacturing and worked with the Dana Corporation. He was a member of Upper Sinking Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Alan Edward Cross; brothers, Harvey Cross, Johnny Cross and Robert Cross; and sisters, Lena Kelley, Edna Horner and Velma Stoltz.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Cross of Pleasantville; son, Steven (Patricia) Cross of Dothan, Ala.; daughter, Bonita (Jim) Grimes of Mt. Pleasant; grandson, Jason (Larissa) Grimes of Clarksville; granddaughter, Rachel (Jason) Coats of Jackson; and two grandchildren, Matthew Coats and Evan Coats, both of Jackson.

Elmo Glover

Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home.

Visitation will from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Giles County native was the son of the late Gus and Josie Shelton Glover.

Survivors include his wife, Clovis Glover of Goodspring; sons, Billy Glover of Lynnville and Larry Glover of Goodspring; daughters, Shelby Jean Smith of Goodspring, Gayle Crabb and Wanda Dunnauant, both of Pulaski; brothers James Glover of Rome, Edward Glover of Pulaski, and Thomas Glover and Garfield Glover of Shelbyville; sister, Lois Woodsely of Goodspring; nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Elizabeth Cunningham Mabry

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with David Andrews and Arthur Haynes officiating. Burial was in Polk Memorial Gardens. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Bedford County native was the daughter of the late Thomas Cunningham and Stacey Azalene Cunningham Davidson. She was married to Richard Lewis Mabry who preceded her in death on November 5, 2002. Mrs. Mabry was a member of Craft Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Michael (Linda) Mabry of Columbia; one daughter, Stephanie Elizabeth Mabry of Columbia; four step grandchildren, Jeffrey (Eileen) Boles of Duck River; Rodney Boles of Lewisburg; Connie (Rex) Clark and Shannon Dooley, both of Columbia; five step great grandchildren; and two step great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Larce White.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Harvey, R. L. King, David Wiley, Jon Boles, Brandon Boles, and Jeff Boles.

Reed Jackson

Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon, Monday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Ted Burleson officiating. Burial will be in Luther Cemetery in Dickson County with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Monday after 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

Mr. Jackson was a native of Harlan, Kentucky. He was married to Cora Lee Luther Jackson who preceded him in death September 22, 2002. He served in the United States Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star for his service during the first invasion of the Phillipines. He was a coal miner and later worked for Chrysler.

Survivors include his step-daughter, Peggy (Bob) Cook of Tullahoma; grandchildren, Christine (Matthew) Campbell and Jeffrey Cook of Tullahoma; and several nephews.

Pallbearers will be members of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.
