He was a retired farmer and landowner, a member of First United Methodist Church of Dyersburg, He was a UA Army Air Force veteran serving as a lieutenant (20th Army Air Force, 315 Bomb Wing,16th Bomb Group) during World War II as a bombardier on a B-29. He participated in many of the final missions over Japan including the now famous, Last Mission.
