Tennessee, U.S., Delayed Birth Records, 1869-1909
Kenneth J. Johnson

Kenneth J. Johnson, age 52, of Murfreesboro died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Rutherford County, he was a member of Third Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by his father, Aud Johnson, he is survived by his mother; Helen Lee Lewis Johnson of Murfreesboro.

Also surviving are his wife, Hazel Geroy Johnson of Murfreesboro; brothers Donald Johnson of Texas and James Johnson of Murfreesboro; sisters Audis Tackett and Bertha Mason, both of Murfreesboro, and Evelyn Adcock of Readyville; eight nieces; and six nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Jennings and Ayers Chapel with the Rev. Tony White officiating. Interment icon will follow in Evergreen cemetery.

Visitation with the family will from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Jennings and Ayers.

George E. Hughes

George E. Hughes, age 94, died at Vanderbilt Medical Center Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004. A native of Ohio, he had lived in Rutherford County most of his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, and was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Garlinda Jane Hughes; and his wife, Betty Lou Goins Hughes.

Survivors include his son, Thomas Douglas Hughes of Lascassas; daughters Alta K. Dunn of Manchester, Edna R. Hughes of Lascassas, Rosetta Davis of Franklin, Ky., and Martha Taylor of Manchester.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with David Humphrey and Bill Reed officiating.

Visitation with the family will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Jennings and Ayers.

Ann Byrd

Services for Ann Byrd will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Jennings and Ayers Funeral Home with Archie King and Scott Price officiating. Burial will follow the chapel service at 1p.m. on Monday at the Middle Tennessee Veterans cemetery.

Ann Byrd was born Anna Mabel Bodenhausen on June 9, 1918 in a room above Bodenhausen General Store owned by her parents August Otto and Elsa (Elise) Elizabeth Bodenhausen in Saint Joseph, Mo.

After graduating from high school, Ann worked for Bell South. Her passion was taking flying lessons. She was 30 hours short of a commercial pilot's license, when World War II broke out, and she enlisted in the Army. Ann became a sergeant in telecommunications where she was cleared to receive undercover cryptic messages.

In 1947, Ann met Sgt. James E. Byrd in Battle Creek, Mich. After being discharged, the couple married, Sep. 11, 1948.

They had resided in Murfreesboro since 1953. Ann was active in the Girl Scouts and helped locate and found the first Girl Scout camp in the area; she also taught Red Cross swimming lessons. She taught Sunday school for the third grade and for many years taught the 'Dorcas' Sunday school class at Southeast Baptist Church where she was a member. She also worked for many years at Beckman's Prescription Shop, owned by Milton and Sylvia Beckman.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Otto A. Bodenhausen.

She is survived by her husband, James Byrd of Murfreesboro; daughters, Beverly Schoonover, also of Murfreesboro, Mrs. Karen Regina Bauer of Brentwood and Mrs. Nancy Amanda (Geary) Wright of Gallatin; grandchildren David Wesley Schoonover, Chelsea Ann Bauer and Brettson James Bauer; and nieces Dr. Judith Bodenhausen (Joel) Brooks of Berkley, Calif., and Carol Bodenhausen of Gallup, N.M.

She came to be with the Lord on Sept. 24, 2004 at Adamsplace in Murfreesboro.

Pallbearers will be Milton Beckman, Doyle Brown, Larry Byrd, Charles Byrd, David Schoonover, Geary Wright, Jim Bauer and Bud Mitchell. The AGAPE women's Sunday school class at Southeast Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3 until 7 p.m. at Jennings and Ayers Funeral Home.

JENNINGS CLAYTON KING

Jennings Clayton King, age 21 of Smithville, TN, died Sept. 24, 2004, at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. A native of Rutherford Co., he had lived in Smithville for the past year and a half. He Attended Rockvale Elementry, Riverdale and Blackman Schools. Jennings was an employee of Products Action Co. in quality control. He was also a member of the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Son of Robert A. (Tony) and Janie Watters King of Murfreesboro; brother, Cordell Emby King of Murfreesboro; sisters, Summer Dawn King-Pate and Natalie Rose King both of Murfreesboro.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a. m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Jennings and Ayers Chapel, and interment icon will be in Walker cemetery in Winfield, TN at 5:00 p.m. eastern time. Trip Meredith will officiate. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Jennings and Ayers, 820 S. Church St. Murfreesboro, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Annie Blanche Richardson Summers

Annie Blanche Richardson Summers, 85, of Murfreesboro died Sept. 27, 2004. She was a homemaker and a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by her parents; I. W. and Mary Esther Howland Richardson; her husband, Fred H. Summers, who passed away in 1973.

Survivors include her son, Billy (Claire) Summers, of Murfreesboro; grandchildren Jason (Ashley) Summers and Shawn Summers, both of Murfreesboro.

The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Jennings and Ayers Chapel, The Rev. Carl Roberts will officiate, with burial to follow in Summers Family cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Pascal, Edmond Jacobs, W. H. Gum, Jason Summers, Kenneth Carter and Morris Broyles. Honorary pallbearers are Raymond Delbridge, Eugene Dubois, Henry Jakes and Mark King

Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m. today at Jennings and Ayers, 820 S. Church St. Murfreesboro. 893-2422.

Ruby Pearl Dyer Herrod

Ruby Pearl Dyer Herrod, 76, of Murfreesboro, died Sept. 27, 2004, at her residence. A native of Rutherford County, she was retired from Alvin C. York VA Medical Center, and she was a member of the Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Isiah and Tenny Carlton Dyer; her husband, Erma M. Herrod; brother William (Bill) Dyer; sisters Christine Brohawn, Virginia Lee; and a great-grandchild; Daysia Lee Neal.

Survivors include a son Stanley (Regena) Herrod, of Walter Hill community; and a daughter, Patricia LeClaire (Lee) Summers, of Bowling Green, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jennings and Ayers Chapel with the Rev. Roy Anderson officiating and interment icon in Coleman cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be 4-8 p.m. today at Jennings and Ayers, 820 S. Church St. Murfreesboro, TN, 893-2422.

JUDITH L. SIMPSON

Judith L. Simpson, daughter of the late Alfred D. Lewis and Myrtle Wheeler Lewis passed away September 27, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. at the age of 88. A native and life long resident of Rutherford Co. she was a homemaker and a member of Blackman Church of Chris.

Judith lived her life to serve God and her fellow man. She was known far and wide for her cooking. She was quick to offer compassion and comfort to others in times of sickness or bereavement. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be missed and fondly remembered by all who have been touched by her love.

She is survived by her husband, John Simpson; son, Joseph Simpson and wife, Vicky; Grandchildren; Jonathon and Jocelyn Simpson; nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 30, 2004 at Jennings and Ayers Chapel with Terry Davenport officiating. Interment icon will follow at McClaren cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers

Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jennings and Ayers, 820

CHARLES C. KERSEY

Charles C. Kersey, age 56, of Murfreesboro died, Thursday, September 30, 2004 at Middle Tn Medical Center. A native of Maury Co. he had lived in Murfreesboro for the past 30 years. He was a member of the Gideons, Noon Exchange Club and Third Baptist Church and a Vietnam Veteran with the U. S. Army. Mr. Kersey was a loan officer with Wells Fargo Mortgage Co.

Preceded in death by his father; Flenoy Copeland Kersey, brothers; Clayburn Kersey and J. T. Kersey.

Survivors include his mother; Rachel Hickman Kersey of Mt. Pleasant, wife; Sue Young-Kersey of Murfreesboro; brothers, Raymond (Jennie) Kersey of Alabama, Jerry (Linda) Kersey of Pulaski and Paul (Dianna) Kersey of Mt. Pleasant, sisters Fay Kersey and Doris Kersey of Mt. Pleasant and Sherlyn Kersey of Nashville.

His beloved pet dog, Spirit.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Third Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Lee and Murray Mathis officiating with burial to follow in Evergreen cemetery.

Friends from his Sunday School Class will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation with the family will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Jennings and Ayers, 820 S. Church St. Murfreesboro, TN

Herman Bedford Lovvorn

Herman Bedford Lovvorn, 86, of Kings Highway in Murfreesboro, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

Mr. Lovvorn was born in Bedford County and retired from the Red Rose Dairy and the Murfreesboro City School system. Known as Mo Lovvorn, he was a lifelong sports fan and was inducted into the Rutherford County Baseball Hall of Fame and presented a trophy in 2000. His mother died when he was 2 years old. Mo never met a stranger and throughout his life provided a home to numerous children. He always wished he had a lot of money so he could build a big place to care for all the children of the world who needed a home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Edgar and Martha Odell Vance Lovvorn; his wife, Eavie Mae Russell; two infant children, Bobby Jo and Wilma Jean Lovvorn; an infant grandson, Samuel Fucci; and brothers, Howard R. Lovvorn and John W. Lovvorn.

He is survived by sons Thomas (Nancy) Lovvorn of Antioch, Jerry Lovvorn of Murfreesoro; daughter Diann (Ron) Warta of Murfreesboro; grandchildren Jeffrey Lovvorn of Antioch, Candy (Tim) Weeks, Jason (Maria) Fucci and Angel Lovvorn, all of Murfreesboro, and Chris (David) Regg of Smyrna; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral serviced will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Jennings and Ayers Chapel with the Rev. Roy Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 3 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Jennings and Ayers.

THOMAS MICHAEL (MIKE) DAVENPORT

Thomas Michael (Mike) Davenport, age 41, of Murfreesboro, died Oct. 1, 2004 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A native and life long resident of Rutherford Co, he was a pitcher for Buchanan Renegades and the Lil’ Renegades. He was a Baptist. Mike was preceded in death by his father; Thomas Patton Davenport, grandparents; Doc and Annie Davenport and Jim and Mae Reed. His survivors include his mother; Lucille Reed Davenport of Murfreesboro, daughter; Kristina Swann of Murfreesboro, sisters: Diane Stone and Teresa Davis of Murfreesboro, and many friends and loving family. Service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, at Jennings and Ayers Chapel, with Robbie Peay officiating, burial to follow in Coleman cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brent Hart, Dave Hart, Nathan Yopp, Terry Pugh, Dennis Pugh and Junior Paul. Visitation with the family will be 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Jennings and Ayers, 820 S. Church St., Murfreesboro, TN 893-2422.

MELVIN GLYNN GILBERT, Msgt USAF, Retired

Retired Msgt. Melvin Glynn Gilbert, age 69, passed away at his residence, Saturday, October 2, 2004. A native of Murfreesboro, he retired from the United States Air Force/Vietnam Veteran and was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by his parents; Quim LeVergne Gilbert and Otilia Dunaway Gilbert and his older brother; Richard LeVergne Gilbert.

He is survived by his wife; Helen Marie Wilson Gilbert of Murfreesboro: children, Melvin Glynn Gilbert, Jr. of LaVergne, Teela Rose Gilbert, Ruby Renee Mitchell and Cory LeVergne Gilbert all of Murfreesboro, brother and sister-in-law:

Edward B. and Marie Gilbert of Murfreesboro; sister, Peggy Sue Tomlin of Columbia; grandchildren, Christopher Shane Gilbert of Murfreesboro, Edward Brent Gilbert of Knoxville, Johnathan Glynn Gilbert, Matthew Glenn Gibson, Allyson Kay Gilbert, Lauren Renee Gibson and Nathan Dakota Mitchell all of Murfreesboro: great-grandchildren, Christopher Allen Gilbert, Matthew Brian Gilbert, Logan Price Gilbert and Shelby Danielle Gilbert.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Monday at Jennings and Ayers with David Pitman and Chris Sale officiating, interment icon will be in Fairview cemetery in Wilson County with military Honors.

Gilbert, Nathan Mitchell, Chad Thomas, Buddy Thomas and Jeff Gossett.

Hoyte Herman

Hoyt Herman, age 74, of Murfreesboro, died at his residence, Oct. 5, 2004. A native of Smithville, he had lived most of his life in Murfreesboro amd was a self-employed carpenter.

Preceded in death by his parents; Grady and Hassie Herman, his wife, Carrie Nipper Herman and a daughter; Willie Kay Warrick.

Survivors include, sons, William Thomas Wright of Smyrna, Jeffrey Eugene Wright of Murfreesboro; daughters, Rita Fay Underwood and Vicki Martin both of Murfreesboro; brother, George Herman of McMinnville; sister, Clara Mae Caldwell of Smithville, 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Service for Mr. Herman will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Jennings and Ayers Chapel with Doyle Sadler officiating and burial will follow at Coleman cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Jennings and Ayers, 820 S. Church St. Murfreesboro, TN

WILLIE MAE COMER

Willie Mae Comer, age 84, of Murfreesboro, died at her residence Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004. A native of Cannon Co. she lived most of her life in Rutherford Co. a member of Sharpesville Church of Christ and a homemaker.

Preceded in death by her husband; John Lemuel Comer, Sr., parents; Hiram and Simmie Fowler Mahaffey, sister Ethel Lassiter, brothers; George Mahaffey, Arthur Mahaffey, Ronnie Mahaffey, Oillie Mahaffey and Ed Mahaffey.

Mrs. Comer is survived by son; John Lemuel Comer, Jr. of Murfreesboro, daughters; Arlene Harris (Danny), Sharon Leyhew (David), Judy Davis (John) all of Murfreesboro,

Carolyn Bush (Robert) of Woodbury, Sisters; Mary Cherry of Lebanon, Betty Sanders, Linda Russell, Janie Hearn all of Murfreesboro, Frances Alaniz, Gladys Hurron of Orlando, Fl. Brothers; James Hale, H. J. Mahaffey, Roy Mahaffey, David Mahaffey and Ricky Mahaffey all of Murfreesboro, 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Service for Mrs. Comer will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Jennings and Ayers Chapel with Bro. Herb Alsup officiating with burial to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.

Visitation with the family will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday and 11:00 a.m. Saturday until service time at 2:00 p.m. at Jennings and Ayers, 820 S. Church St. Murfreesboro, TN
