Virginia Hardin Miller
Died: 05/13/2000
Virginia Hardin Amick Miller, age 75, died at her home Saturday, May 13.

She was a member of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church and member of Daughters of American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Edna Mae Hardin and brother, Robert H. Hardin.

She is survived by her sons, Robert Amick, of Del Rio and Doug H. Amick, of Chattanooga; daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Mike Nelson, of Del Rio; brother-in-law, Andrew P. Amick, of Calf; sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Ray Dugan; grandchildren, Val, Samantha, and Zachary Amick.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jim Loftis officiating, with burial in Union cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Manes Funeral Home.

Manes Funeral Home is in charge.

James W. Holt
Died: 05/12/2000
James W. Holt, 70, former prominent Bridgeton, New Jersey and Newport, Tennessee businessman, died Friday evening at his residence in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mr. Holt had owned and operated Jim’s Deli at Carll’s Corner, Bridgeton, for several years after purchasing the store from the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Doughty. He then bought the property across the street on Landis Avenue and built the Super Sonic Car Wash which operated for several years and was site of the former Pete & Hitch Car Agency, now Tinker’s Seafood. He also owned the Super Sonic Car Wash in Vineland. He purchased a Christmas tree farm in Oil City, Pennsylvania and sold the trees at his store for several years. After selling the business to his son, David, he and his wife, Mary, moved to Newport, Tennessee, where he purchased and operated two grocery businesses, Brock’s Market and Brock’s In & Out. They then moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they purchased a small store named Corner Cuppard which they operated for 4 years.

Mr. Holt was born in Bybee, Tennessee, and was the son of the late Julius C. and Essie Buckner Holt. He had resided on Landis Avenue in Upper Deerfield Township for several years.

He was a graduate of Bridgeton High School, class of 1949, and had been employed with former Pete’s Men’s Stores in Bridgeton until purchasing the Deli.

Survivors include: his former wife, Mary Bidenti Holt, of Upper Deerfield Township, New Jersey and Florida; one son, David Holt, of Bybee, Tennessee; one daughter, Gloria Walsh, of Egg Harbor City, New Jersey; two sisters, Ruth Padgett, of Bridgeton, New Jersey, and Norma Cody, of Newport, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Ryan Holt, of Tallahassee, Florida, Kyle Holt, of Bridgeton, New Jersey, Laurie Giannakaris, of Vineland, New Jersey, and Christopher Walsh, of Vineland, New Jersey; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis Mary Giannakaris.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Holt, and two sisters, Pauline Howell and Junella Lovell.

Private funeral services were held in Las Vegas. Burial will be in Liberty Hill cemetery, Bybee, Tennessee.

Padgett Funeral Home, Bridgeton, New Jersey, in charge of arrangements.

Launa Dunn Kovach
Died: 05/15/2000
Launa Dunn Kovach, 86, of Newport, passed away May 15, 2000 at the Baptist Hospital of Cocke County.

Launa was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Kovach; parents, William and Harriet Dunn; brothers, Roy, Allen, Charlie and Hollis Dunn; and sisters, Annie Nichols and Jessie Blazer.

She is survived by one sister, Georgia Mae Ford; special niece and her husband, Gennie Vee and James Moore; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. with the funeral service at 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Sam Hinchey and Rev. Rick Clevenger will officiate.

Graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Dunn cemetery.

Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Myron Zimri Ball
Died: 05/14/2000
Myron Zimri Ball, age 42, of Arrington, formerly of Newport, died May 14, at Williamson County Medical Center in Franklin.

He had been a computer salesman for Lanier Business Products and was a former member of First Baptist Church of Newport.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Tillman Ball and Viola Anita Green Ball, and William Oscar Hartsell and Mable Ruth Holdway Hartsell.

He is survived by his sons, Hunter Tillman Ball and William Hughes Ball, both of Brentwood; sister and brother-in-law, Susan Anita and Robert Pack, Jr., of Acworth, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff “Fud” and Bonnie Ball, of Newport; parents, Zimri and Myra Hartsell Ball, of Newport; nephew, Evan Pack, of Acworth, GA; nieces, Kaitlyn Pack, of Acworth, GA, Miranda Ball, Whitney Ball, Jennifer Ball, and Allison Ball, all of Newport. Additional survivors include the mother of his children, Valeria Hocker Ball, of Brentwood; aunt and uncle, Jean and Frosty Carrell, of Newport; uncle, LaRue Crumb, of Newport; and cousin, Larry William Crumb, of Sterling Heights, MI.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home.

The funeral services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ralph Smith officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday morning at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home to proceed to Union cemetery for 10 a.m. burial.

Costner-Maloy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Tom Gunter
Died: 05/13/2000
Tom Gunter, 67, of Newport, passed away Saturday, May 13, after a short illness.

Tom was a member of Northport Baptist Church and was retired from B.A.S.F.

He served in the US Army during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Betsy (Ramsey) Gunter and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Hilde Gunter, of Newport; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas (Tommy) Gunter, of Newport and Ricky and Judy Williamson, of Newport; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janene and Chet Bradley, of Newport and Elizabeth and Dennis Fanning, of Mt. Sinai, New York; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Christine and Ralph Black, of Cosby, and Rosie Ziemkiewicz, of Newport; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one uncle, Doyle Webb, of Newport; and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Monday, May 15, from 7-9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, May 16, at 2 p.m., at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chuck McGill officiating. Burial was in the Smith cemetery.

military rites were conducted by Lance Corporal Charles C. Roberts D.A.V. Chapter #102.

J. B. Ottinger
Died: 03/22/2000
J.B. Ottinger, 74, of 2040 Warrensburg Road, Greeneville, died Wednesday morning, March 22, at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

He was retired from auto sales and was an antique dealer. He was widely known in Greene County as a dealer of used cars. Buying and selling antiques was a passion that he enjoyed immensely, making many friends and acquaintances in the process.

He loved the Lord which was reflected in his generosity and in his dealings with family, friends, and business associates. He was a member of First Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arvil and Gladys Ottinger.

Survivors: wife of 49 years, Jerlee Ottinger; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gayle and Toddy Laws, Connie Gaby, and Rebecca and Bill Cutshaw; brother and sister-in-law, Mack and Margaret Ottinger; sister, Louise Wright; grandchildren, Guss Laws, Joshua Smith, Matthew Smith, Rebekah Smith, Ceth Smith, and Buddy Gaby; great-grandchild, Ashlyn Laws; sister-in-law, Agnes Smith; nieces, Sherry Cobble and Betty Hartman; and nephews, Harold Ottinger, Eddie Ottinger, Jackie Ottinger, Ronnie Morrison, Bucky Wright, and Ralph Smith.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at First Church of God, with Pastors Charles Heater and Darrell Sovine officiating. Interment icon will be in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. on Friday at Kiser Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.

Pallbearers: Harold Ottinger, Eddie Ottinger, Jackie Ottinger, Ronnie Morrison, Bucky Wright, Joshua Smith, Matthew Smith, and Guss Laws. Honorary pallbearers: The Bible Venture Class and friends who shared his love of antiques, used car dealers, Dr. Jeffrey Harris, Dr. A.K. Sen, and Dr. Marlin Mathieson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Locust Springs Christian Retreat Center, c/o First Church of God, 1505 West Main Street, Greeneville, TN 37743.

Kiser Funeral Home, Greeneville, is in charge.

Hollis Fred Phillips
Died: 03/26/2000
Hollis Fred Phillips, of Newport, died Sunday, March 26, after a lengthy illness.

He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Lynn Phillips; mother, Leota Phillips; father, Amos Phillips; and brothers, Don Phillips and Creed Phillips.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Phillips of Newport; children, Debbie Cox and Judine Oakley, both of Gatlinburg, and Kim Smith, Kay James, Patricia Gunter and Dorothy Kyker, all of Newport; grandchildren, Brittany Cox, Jared Cox, Katie Oakley, Shawna Oakley, Sam Oakley, Daniel Worex, Jessica Williams, Jon Williams, Misty Barnes, Danny Spurgeon, Jennifer Phillips, Mandy Williams, Shelly Kyker, and Bart Kyker; great-grandchildren, Alyssa James and Corissa Phillips; and one nephew, Donnie Phillips of South Carolina.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Messer officiating, with burial in Stokely Chapel cemetery with Lance Corporal Charles Roberts D.A.V. Chapter #102 conducting military rites.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Manes Funeral Home.

Manes Funeral Home is in charge.
