John P. 'Simmie' Sanders

John P. "Simmie" Sanders, age 88, of South Knoxville, passed away Monday, September 28, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Longtime aviator & motorcycle enthusiast. He flew himself and his family over parts of North and South America. He started flying in the 1920's and has flown airplanes for over 70 years. He was owner of Sanders Cycle Company, a dealership for Harley-Davidson Motorcycles for 40 years. Member of Lake Forest Presbyterian Church and a devoted husband and family man.

Harlan H. Price, age 77, of South Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, September 29, 1998, at UT Hospital. He was a retired employee of the US Postal Service and a veteran of World War II, US Army serving in the 851st Engineer Battalion. Member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church and the Burlington Masonic Lodge #763 F&AM. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Price Hilton; granddaughter, Amanda Hilton; son-in-law, Bill Rader and brother, Charles H. Price.

Robert K. Francis

Frances, Robert K., of Knoxville, TN, was born May 4, 1922, and left this life on March 13, 2002. He was a long time member of South Knoxville Baptist Church. Retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory after 41 years as a Senior Designer. He was a Private First Class in the 103rd Infantry Division of the US Army in World War II. Awarded the Purple Heart & Bronze Star. Preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Shelton Francis.

Four sons & daughters-in-law: Chris & Linda, Jay & Judy Lynn, Noel & Beth, and Kelvin & Betty; eight grandchildren: Jonathan, Emily Withrow, Matthew, Benjamin, Laura, Daniel, Samuel, & Philip, step grandchildren: Kimberly Owenby and Michelle Thomas; great-grandchildren Jacob, Ethan, & Hunter. Nancy Morrison Winkle Snead
3/20/2002

Snead, Nancy Morrison Winkle, was born May 14, 1897 to Mary MacCammon and Andrew J. Winkle, who was a Knoxville attorney. She died March 20, 2002, in Commerce, Georgia. She was descended from pioneer families in the books, The John Pickens Family and Snead Notebook. She married Herndon Graham Snead of Centreville, Alabama on February 19, 1917. He and two children, Elizabeth Shue and William Snead preceded her in death. The six children: Elizabeth Cowan Snead Shue (1918-2001) Lloyd C. Shue, Maryville, Tennessee, Graham Andrew Snead (Elaine Allen Snead), Pleasant Grove, Alabama, Rachel Snead Hunt (Albert C. Hunt, M.D.), Decatur, Alabama, William Carson Snead (1926-1994) Lorraine Rogers Snead, Belton, Missouri, Mary Esther Snead Parker (Alton-Bud-Parker), Tampa, Florida, Judson Abercrombie Snead (Mitzi Worrell Snead), Commerce, Georgia.

Survivors

Four children, three sons-in-law, three daughters-in-law, 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service Monday, March 25, 2002 at 1:00 PM at the old Zion Lutheran Church (now called the Center of Hope). Pallbearers will be Fred Winkle, Wayne Byers, Mike Winkle, Bob Winkle, Judson A. Colonel Russell A. Newman

Newman, Colonel Russell A., age 73, of Knoxville, completed his mission on March 22, 2003. Colonel Newman was born in Knoxville on December 12, 1929. He earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee in 1953 and, as an ROTC student, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the U.S. Army. His military career included the Infantry Officer's Basic Course, the Armor Officer's Advanced Course and U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College (C&GSC). Colonel Newman went on to serve positions of staff and command from platoon leader through regimental commander. He was the first regimental commander, designated as "the first Colonel of Regiment, " of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR) in Knoxville. The Tennessee National Guard unit became one of only two heavy armored cavalry regiments in the US Army. It is today an enhanced brigade, a very prestigious designation that keeps the unit as a state-of-the-art unit in the Army. After retiring from the military in June 1985 with nearly 32 years' service, Colonel Newman joined the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA). In March 1986 when TEMA was organized into regions along the lines of the state's three Grand Divisions, Colonel Newman was named the first director of the East Region. Colonel Newman retired from that post in March, 1999. Colonel Newman is a past president of the National Guard Association of Tennessee and has served numerous public service organizations in East Tennessee, the last being on the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries and the Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad. Colonel Newman is preceded in death by his parents Russell and Georgia Newman and sister Hazel Morton.

Son Sgt. Charles Newman; daughter Ann Rita Ditmore and husband Floyd; grandson Hunter Ditmore; sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Howard Bozeman; brother-in-law J.W. Morton; several nieces and nephews.

Service

There will be a reception from 10:00 AM until Noon Tuesday at the National Guard Armory at 3330 Sutherland Avenue with a memorial service to follow at Noon, with the Chaplains Corps of the National Guard Armory officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Tennessee Veterans cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Colonel requests memorial donations be made to Goodwill Industries 5508 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919 or the Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad 512 N. CLYDE FAULKNER

FAULKNER, CLYDE G., age 75, of North Knoxville, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2003 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. He was a member of Garden Creek Baptist Church in Marion, North Carolina. He was retired from U.S. Air Force with 21 years of service and U.S. Postal Service with 18 years of service.

Survived by wife of 54 years, Lorean Faulkner; five children, Launa Rutherford and husband, Tim, of Orlando, FL, Deborah Eggers and husband, David, of Philadelphia, PA, Steven Faulkner and wife, Linda, of Dallas, TX, Tina Pope and husband, Daniel, of Lenoir City, TN, and Craig Faulkner and wife, Tammie, of Halls, TN; 11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Daniel Faulkner and wife, Katherine; sister, Mildred Mathis, all of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews.

James Curtis
2/23/2004

“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusts in Him.” Psalm 34:8 Curtis, James Keith – age 82 of Knoxville, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, February 23, 2004. Mr. Curtis served in the U.S. Navy during WW II aboard the USS Intrepid. After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in Civil Engineering, he worked with TVA until his retirement. He was the founding president of the Smoky Mountain Auburn Booster Club, a member of Toastmasters and the Technical Society of Knoxville. He served in various roles in his church and neighborhood association. Mr. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, James William and Mary Alma Curtis, his brother, Kenneth Brewer Curtis, and his sister, Mary Elizabeth Rogers.

Survivors

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Lou Davis Curtis, daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Steve Chesney of Knoxville. Sammie and Bob Shanks of Kernersville, NC, Diddy and Rees Buttram of Chattanooga, and his son and daughter-in-law, Bo and Laurie Curtis of Knoxville. He is also survived by grandchildren Luke, Curtis and Marion Chesney, Abbey Cupp, Bobby, Adam and Alison Shanks, Will Rees, Chrissy Buttram, and two great-grandsons, Caden and Gavin Cupp.

Service

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Atrium at Wallace Memorial Baptist Church, with the funeral following at 8:15. Dr. Mike Boyd and Rev. Kent Williams will be officiating. Family and friends will meet at Greenwood cemetery for a noon graveside service Thursday. Emma Lee (Emily) Stinnett Harris

Harris, Emma Lee “Emily” Stinnett, age 76, of South Knoxville, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 and has now joined the love of her life, husband, Bob in Heaven. Also preceded in death by parents, Rufus and Leah Mae Parsons Stinnett; one brother and three sisters. Retired from UT Hospital dietary services as a supervisor after 20 years of service. Most recently worked for her son, David at Machine Fabrication and Repair. Member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church.

Her four children: Brenda and James T. Fuller of Columbia; SC; Carol and John G. McCarter of Karns; Robert E. and Shirley Harris of South Knoxville; David R. and Karen Harris of Paint Rock, Tennessee; grandchildren: Hilary and Joseph A. Timmons III of Columbia, SC; John M. and Sarah E. McCarter; Dudley and Ruth Hurst of Wartburg; Tina and Johnny Hawn of Dandridge; Robert E. Harris III; great-grandchildren: Joseph Timmons IV; Christine, Elizabeth, and Rebecca Hurst; Kelsey and Katelyn Haun; brother, Marvin Stinnett; and a host of other relatives and friends. Emily never met a stranger.

GREER, JOHN THOMAS, baby son of Jack and Tina Greer, went to live with Jesus May 23, 2002 at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

John Thomas also leaves behind 4 year old big brother Jackson; grandparents, Norton and Verdie Henderlight, and Blake and Millie Greer; great aunt, uncle, and cousin, Linda, Jr., and Karen Hackney, aunt, uncle, and cousin Troy, Angela, and Chasity Henderlight, aunts, Kim Giammarino and Kristi Smith, uncle Richard Giammarino, and other great aunts, great uncles, and cousins. In John Thomas’ short life, he touched the lives of many including our dear church family at First Baptist Church of Fountain City, our friends, our doctors, our nurses, and their wonderful office staff. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the many people who have helped us through many prayers, love, and support, during the last 9 months.

Sanders School of Nursing, served in the U.S. Air Force as a nurse and retired from Prince William Hospital in Manassas, VA. Preceded in death by parents, Ernest Akard and Ollice Caldwell Akard.
