Chambers, Margie Lee Coffey, passed away at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center Monday, February 23, 2004. She was born July 25, 1919 in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was retired from Robertshaw Fulton Credit Union and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Jean Sands Coffey and her beloved husband Woodrow O. Chambers, son of W. H. Chambers and Ester Renneau Chambers. She was also preceded in death by sisters Nora Hensley of Knoxville and Edith Williams of Atlanta and a brother Shelley Coffeey killed in World War II.

Survivors

Sister Etta Jones of Knoxville; two daughters: Linda Gail Chambers of Columbus, Ohio and Brenda C. Carter and husband Thomas Lee Carter of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was the grandmother of Thomas C. Carter of New York and Gina (and husband Jeff) Kroner of Oakley, California and the great-grandmother of Noah Aaron and Ethan Liam Kroner of Oakley, California. She was blessed and is survived by compassionate caregivers Joanna, Angie, Diane, Trenia, Patsy, Terry, and Linda.

Service

The extended family will meet at Berry Funeral Home the evening of Thursday, February 26 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM for viewing and celebration. A graveside service will be held Friday at 1:00 PM at Woodlawn cemetery. Dr. George Hollander will officiate. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Charles Crigger

Charles W. Crigger, age 74 of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at Parkwest Medical Center. He was a retired Lt. from Knoxville Police Department and later served as head of security at Parkwest Medical Center. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police for 50 years.He was a veteran of the US Navy during the Korean War. Preceded in death by his wife, Joe Crigger; son, Mark Crigger; parents, Roy and Christine Crigger; and brother, Herman Crigger.

Survivors

Survivors include son, Mike Crigger of Knoxville; daughter, Sherry and husband Jim Janney of Atlanta; daughter-in-law, Rena Crigger of Knoxville, grandchildren, Matthew Crigger, Kevin Crigger, Courtney Janney, Bradley Janney, Joe-Joe Janney, and Lauren Crigger; and several nieces and nephews.

Service

Graveside service will be Friday at 12:00 PM at Lynnhurst cemetery with military honors provided by Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home

Hazel Stevenson

Stevenson, Hazel Marie Kirby –age 86, of Knoxville, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 8, 2008. Hazel touched many people, her family, and friends with a gentle and kind spirit. She will be greatly missed. She graduated from Farragut High School and Purdue University with at BA Degree and Master’s Degree in Media Science. Hazel was a high school teacher and head librarian. She also served on the Library Board in Georgia. Preceded in death by parents, Carrie Ellen Keith Kirby and Enoch McKinley Kirby; husband of 52 years, Dale Stevenson and granddaughter, Rachel M. Stevenson.

Twin daughters, Sandra Blanche Stevenson of Knoxville, Tennessee and Sharon Ellen Stevenson Switz and husband, Ted of Jordan, Arkansas; son, Larry Dale Stevenson and wife, Diane of Lafayette, Indiana; grandson, Brent A. Funeral service 2:00 PM Friday, Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Rev. Leonard Turner officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery. Eugene Burgin

Burgin, Eugene W., age 80, of South Knoxville went to be with the Lord January 6, 2009 at Park West Medical Center. He was a member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church. He graduated from Young High School Class of 1947 and attended the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship under Coach Robert Neyland. He served in the military where he played football for the overseas Army team and was selected for both offensive and defensive all-star teams. On returning to Knoxville he began working for the Knoxville Journal as district manager and attended and played football for Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. His career in automobile sales began as owner of Parkway Motor Sales on Chapman Highway and in 1967 became the owner of Burgin Dodge, Inc. In his 36 years as a Dodge Dealer he received every award for excellence offered by the Chrysler Corporation, and was recognized as #1 in the nation for customer service in the Dodge Division. He retired in 2003. He is preceded in death by his father Freeman H. Burgin and mother Neva Cutshaw Burgin.

Survived by wife of 58 years, Betty Jo Ogle Burgin, son and daughter in law Stephen (Deacon)and Judi Burgin, daughters and son in laws Sherry Rhoton and Dale Rhoton and Sandy and David Houston, grandchildren Rebecca Day and husband Brian, Tyler Rhoton and wife Emily, Ryan Burgin and wife Christie, Jeremy Burgin, Josh Burgin and wife Meredith, Elizabeth Claybaker and husband Ben, Jonathan Houston and wife Kristy, Rachel Austin and husband Aaron, and Gabriel Houston (deceased), as well as 10 great-grandchildren, brothers and in laws Jay and Margaret Burgin, Darrahl and Jerry Burgin, Homer Burgin and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 9, 2009 at Sevier Heights Baptist Church at 7:30pm with Pastors David Houston, Hollie Miller and Tim Miller officiating. Blackwelder, V.E. “Ed”, age 81, of South Knoxville, passed away after bravely fighting an overwhelming illness, May 20, 2002 at Baptist Hospital. Member, Deacon, and Minister of Music of Gayland Heights Baptist church. He also served as music director at Immanuel Baptist Church for 29 years. He was the band director at South High School for 15 years and also taught at Carter and Halls High School. Veteran of United States Navy where he was a member of the Navy Band during World War II. Lifetime member of East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association. He was also a graduate of the University of Tennessee and attended Notre Dame and University of Southern California.

Wife of 55 years, Gladys Blackwelder; twin children, Robert “Bob” Blackwelder and Barbara Mascola; son-in-law, Joe Mascola; grandson, Joseph Mascola.

Retired teacher of 43 years from Knox and Sevier County School Systems. Preceded in death by parents, Sandridge M. and Alazania Ogle Whaley; brothers, Thomas, Rufus, Austin, Clisba, and Olin Whaley; sisters, Eliza Whaley and Minda Ellison.

Thomas Howard Polk, Jr.

Polk, Jr., Thomas Howard, born April 13, 1962, originally of Westville, NJ, but a resident of East Tennessee since 1993 and Blount County since 1998, went home to be with the Lord from Blount Memorial Hospital on July 19, 2004, after complications from many long battles with a terminal illness, which we are happy to proclaim Jesus has finally won the victory over Tom’s war with this disease and this Faithful servant is now at home resting in peace with his Father, as promised in 1999 when Tom’s journey first began. Upon graduation in 1980 from Gateway High School in Westville, NJ, Tom went on to serve 4 years in the USAF as a Food Service Specialist. Tom was a member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN as well as the Tennessee State Guard out of Knoxville, TN. He also dedicated his time as a volunteer in the ICU waiting room at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, TN. At the time Tom was called home he was a disabled veteran and faithful servant, as well as a devoted Husband, Father, and Gampa. He was welcomed home by his mother Lucy Shipley Polk and father, Thomas Howard Polk, Sr.

Loving wife, Charla Polk; caring children Gregg, Jimmy, Darrell, Joseph, Crissy, Sarah, and Dana; two grandbabies, Jonathan and Autumn; two brothers, Joseph and Ken; sisters-in-law, Lisa and Dorothy; nieces Rebecca, Catherine, and Aurora; nephew Anthony; Godchild Brittnee; as well as survived by a support system of very dear close friends from the community and from states and countries all around (some of which we don’t even know) that have continued to keep prayers for him and his family flowing for many years and have been much appreciated, felt, heard, and honored by God our Father.

A celebration and Testimony service will be held Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM at Sevier Heights Baptist Church, Alcoa Highway. Friends and family who would like to rejoice along with the family about Tom’s home coming may do so from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM. Graveside burial for immediate family and close friends will be Monday morning at 11:30 am at the Tennessee State Veterans cemetery, Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Tom to the Blount Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, 9087 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville, TN 37804. The family would like to express their deepest thanks to the staff at both Blount Memorial Hospital and Morning View Transitional Care Center for all the tender loving care they showed Tom while he was in their care over the past years. She retired after 43 years of service with South Central Bell. She is preceded in death by father and mother, Herbert F. and Eva J. Hartman, and husband John T. (Jay) Sexton.

Harris, Emma Lee “Emily” Stinnett, age 76, of South Knoxville, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 and has now joined the love of her life, husband, Bob in Heaven. Also preceded in death by parents, Rufus and Leah Mae Parsons Stinnett; one brother and three sisters. Retired from UT Hospital dietary services as a supervisor after 20 years of service. Most recently worked for her son, David at Machine Fabrication and Repair. Member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church.

McCarter of Karns; Robert E. and Shirley Harris of South Knoxville; David R. and Karen Harris of Paint Rock, Tennessee; grandchildren: Hilary and Joseph A. MILLER, MAXINE age 63 of Knoxville, passed away Thursday April 22, 2004 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Member of Halls Christian Church. Retired from Bell South and United Way of Knoxville as a labor liason. Member of Knoxville-Oak Ridge Labor Council, AFL-CIO, CWA Local #3805. Member of Mildred Buffler Daytime Women’s Democrat Club. A graduate of Leadership Knoxville and member of Telephone Pioneers of Knoxville. Preceded in death by her mother, Mae Miller and great nephew, Hunter Headrick.

Aubrey William Brewer

Brewer, Aubrey William “A.W.”, age 61 of South Knoxville, was given eternal peace and rest after a lengthy and courageous battle with failing health on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at 7:10 AM, at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center. He is preceded in death by father, John William Brewer; brothers, Robert “Bob” Sledge, Johnny Brewer; and sister, Peggy Cox.

Survivors

He leaves behind, devoted and loving girlfriend, Brenda Loveday, whom he cherished; and faithful dog, Pedab; mother, Audrey Cate Brewer; sister, Bea Terry; brother, Rondie Brewer; former wife of 23 years and mother of his daughters, Lillie M. Brewer; daughters, Teresa A. Rowland (Dave), Deborah B. Massey; and Stephanie N. Brewer; grandchildren, Chris Willis, Stephen Massey, Jr., Kaitlyn Massey and several nieces and nephews.

MASSINGALE, EDGAR LEE “PETE” age 88 went to be with the Lord on April 21, 2004 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Was formerly a pitcher with the Lonesome Pine Baseball League in the early ‘30’s. Retired from Alcoa Aluminum with 36 years of service having helped organize and later became plant chairman of the AFL-CIO steel workers union. He was concerned with helping the “ working man”. Past President of Halls Democrat Club. Member of the Bob Temple North side YMCA where he remained active until his death.

Survivors

Mr. Massingale was very proud of his family and is survived by loving wife of 63 years, Wanda Hubbs Massingale. Daughters and sons-in-law: Sandra and Ray Smyth, Brenda and Jack Waters, Sheila and Ronnie McNutt; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Jan Massingale; Grandchildren: Rebecca Carter, Amy Cofer, Kelli Jones, Audra Dickert, Ronnie Massingale, Jr., Bryan Massingale, Laura Massingale, Dustin McNutt, Darren McNutt; Great Grandchildren: Morgan Carter, Andy and Kate Cofer, Ryan Jones, Ronald Massingale, III, Gabriel Massingale.
