Gertrude Wolfe
9/19/2002

Wolfe, Gertrude “Gertie” Garratt, age 82. In the mid-afternoon of Thursday, September 19th, 2002, our beloved Gertrude, affectionately called "Nanny or Grannie," left us to return home to God. Gertrude was preceded in death by parents, Gertrude Amy and George Allan Garratt; brother Charles, and sister Louise. She had also survived her husband, Carl Samuel Wolfe, who died in 1979. We are grateful for the importance in Gertrude's life of the Vestal United Methodist Church and for many of the members there who were her dear friends. Equally, we appreciate the love and generosity shown to Gertrude by others whose paths crossed hers through the years. A special thanks to the staff of Hillcrest North, St. Mary’s Hospice, and Dr. Michael Bernard. We will speak of "Grannie" always and remember the images of her that we love and appreciate most: her wild and crazy sense of humor; her delight in meeting new people and drawing them immediately into an embrace of familiarity with her easy friendliness; her glorious gift of teaching us how to tell a good story; her good cooking and special recipes; her love of quilts and quilting; her keen interest in learning about things of life and people, places, and animals of the world; her insatiable hunger for reading -- she always had a "good book"; her lifelong love of music, inherited from her grandfather Charles Augustus Garratt, conductor of the first orchestra at old Knoxville High School in the 1920s, and father George, whose fine piano tuning was known throughout East Tennessee for decades; the sensitive, magic touch of her fingers on the piano keys that soothed and entertained us for countless hours; and, without question, her deep, unwavering love for us, her family. Traces of her traits lie within each of us, her descendants, and we are thankful to her for our presence here and for all that we learned from her. She is forever in our hearts.
