Spires, Jack W., age 69, of South Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at Baptist Hospital. Member of Gospel Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Korean Conflict. He is preceded in death by parents, Gillis and Minnie Johnson Spires and sisters, Betty Mellon and Jeanette (Sis) Coker.

Survivors

Wife of 46 years, Billie Hayes Spires; sons, Kim Spires, B.G. Spires and wife, Kay; daughter, Karen Talley and husband, Gary, all of Knoxville; 6 grandchildren; brothers, Ed Carter of Knoxville, Robert Spires and wife, Lynne of Kingston; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service 8:00 PM Thursday, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. I.A. Sparks officiating. Family and friends will meet at Woodlawn cemetery Friday for 11:00 AM interment icon services. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

William M. Oliver
3/14/2004

Oliver, William M. “Bill”, age 81, of South Knoxville, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at UT Hospital. He was a member of Valley Grove Baptist Church. Bill served his country as a member of the United States Navy in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from Bell South Telephone Company after many years of dedicated service. Preceded in death by his father and mother, William M. and Elsie Oliver and brothers, Floyd and Murray Oliver.

Survivors

Survived by loving wife of almost 57 years, Erminia (Mimi) Brown Oliver; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Suzanne Oliver; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Martha Oliver; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Greg Payne; grandchildren, Jeff and wife, Michelle Oliver, Brian, Craig and Mindy Oliver; several extended family members and special, long-time friends.

Service

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, March 16, from 5:30-8:00 PM with funeral service immediately following at Valley Grove Baptist Church, Rev. Bobby Tucker and Rev. Harry Mynatt presiding. Interment icon service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at Woodlawn cemetery. Pallbearers will include son-in-law and grandsons; also nephews, David, Kenny and Eddie Oliver and Floyd “Frosty” Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Valley Grove Baptist Church Family Life Center, 9000 Sevierville Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920. The family extends thanks to the doctors and nurses of UT Hospital MICU for their kindness and assistance. Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway in charge of arrangements.

Lynn Harold Long

Long, Lynn Harold, age45, of South Knoxville, went to be with the Lord on May 11, 2006. He was a member of South Knoxville Church of Christ. Lynn loved to play softball, go fishing, and was loved by all. Preceded in death by his father, Billy Floyd Long.

Survivors

He leaves to mourn his loving mother, Mary Catherine Long Baker and step-father, Robert Baker, Daughter Gail Long and grandson, Apollo. Brothers, Dale and wife Roma, Tommy and wife Lisa, Robert and wife Ginger, Mark and wife Anita. Sisters, Pam and husband Bill Felker, Malynda and Lynn’s little fishing buddy, William Long. Step-Brother, Bobby Baker, Jr. Step Sister; Shirley Patrick, Judy and husband Johnny Rauhuff. Also surviving is Lynn’s extended family.

Service

Funeral service 2 PM Tuesday, Berry chapel Minister Geoff Mabe officiating. Interment icon to follow at Woodlawn cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway

BAILEY, RUTH CLEVELAND age 98, died on April 12, 2004. She was prededed in death by her husband Claude G. Bailey. Both were long time members of Central Baptist in Fountain City.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Carolyn Batts and Annette Bailey; 3 grandchildren Donald Batts, Erin Cobb, and Alexis Rees; 2 great grandchildren, William and Heather Cobb.

Service

A memorial service will be held at Lynnhurst Chapel on May 8, 2004, at 11:00 AM. Family will be available at the chapel at 10:00 AM. Almeida, Jose' H. "Pop", age 100, born March 28, 1903 in Portugal, passed away March 29, 2003 at his home in Seymour. He was of the Catholic Faith and regularly attended Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with his daughter. Preceded in death by wife, Angelina Almeida; twin sister; daughter, Margaret Cortina; son-in-law, Charles Stutzman; grandson, Raymond Stutzman.

Survivors

Daughters: Angelina Cerrone and husband Joseph of Long Island, NY; Rosalie Stutzman of Seymour, TN; Thomas Almeida and wife Sandy of Miami, FL; Irene Sullivan and husband Patrick of IL; son-in-law, Louis Cortina; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Service

Virginia Lucille Ratcliff Medders

Medders, Virginia Lucille Ratcliff, age 78, of Seymour, TN passed away March 15, 2004 at University of Tennessee Medical Center. Graduate of University of Alabama, Masters of Education from University of Montevallo; teacher of Vocational Home Economics (8 years) and State Vocational Home Economics District Supervisor (13 years); piano teacher (14 years); accepted Jesus as Savior and baptized at age 12 at Community Chapel, Lanett, Alabama. Within various Alabama churches of God (affiliated with Anderson, Indiana) served as Sunday school teacher, Worship Leader, Choir Director, Deaconess, Chairperson of Church State Board of Christian Education in Alabama. Present member of Woodlawn Christian Church in Knoxville, TN. Preceded in death by parents, William Arthur Ratcliff and Emma Viola Ratcliff; brothers Norman, Rodney, Morris, Ted, and Wayne; sister Wilma Ratcliff Rice.

Fred Kincel Bull, age 80 of South Knoxville passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2006. He was a member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church, the J Ray Stuart S.S. Class and an active member of the United Methodist Men’s club. Retired from Knoxville Utilities Board with 30 years of service. Preceded in death by his first wife, Haldine (Deannie) Bull.

Survivors

Survived by his wife Muriel Judd Bull; daughters, Kimberly and husband Arnie Butler, and Angela Solomon; grandson, Andrew Jacob Moody; sister, Margaret Kent of Walnut Springs, California; close friends, Uncle John and Aunt Hazel Wilhite; host of nieces, nephews, and cousins

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, funeral to follow at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Rev. Robert Countiss of Colonial Heights and Rev. Brad Bull officiating. Kennedy, Jean, age 76, of Knoxville, passed away suddenly Tuesday, January 29, 2002. Member of Island Home Baptist Church; employee of Knox County School System. Preceded in death by her husband, Jack Kennedy; brothers, Clarence and Earl Kruger.

Children: Gloria Anderson, Jim Kennedy, Nancy Curnell, Jackie Carpenter and Amy Bostic; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Ken Kruger; sister, Elenore Beckstrand; several nieces and nephews.

David DeNio

DeNIO, DAVID A., age 70 of Fountain City, passed away Monday, May 3, 2004. He was a member of Northside Christian Church and employed by Superior Medical Supply. He was a Korean War Veteran in the U.S. Army.

DeNio; children: Sara and husband Vaughn Schutz, Harrogate, TN; Dr. James and wife Stacey Calvert , Dallas, TX; Alison DeNio and husband Wes Hamilton, Winona, MN; Jerrica DeNio, Knoxville; Terri Norbaum, Debbie Stelmach, David DeNio, all of New York; 18 grandchildren, sister-in-law, Jan DeNio, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral service 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Rev. Frits Haverkamp and Vaughn Schutz officiating. Interment icon 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Lynnhurst cemetery with military Honors by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. Armstrong, Carolyn Ann Baker Hensley, age 68, of Seymour passed away May 6, 2003 at her home. Retired from Knox County Health Department. Member of Valley Grove Baptist Church formerly of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. Member of the church choir, active member of the WMU, taught in the discipleship training, played the piano at various times and was a member of the New Beginning Sunday School Class. Preceded in death by parents, A. F. and Gertrude Baker; sister, Artha Armstrong and first husband, Bill Hensley.

Loving husband, Ralph Armstrong; son, William Joe Hensley; daughter and son-in-law, Conni and David Skidmore; step-children: Cathy Armstrong, Kenny Armstrong and wife Beth, Karen Armstrong, Kent Armstrong and wife Ginger; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; brothers and sister-in-law: Dott and Susie Baker, Warren and Helen Baker; sister, Nanabelle Flynn; many loving nieces and nephews.

Kaya Istre

ISTRE, KAYA LILLY, of Fountain City, born May 12, 2001, passed away May 10, 2004 at Children’s Hospital. She was a blessed angel on earth to all who knew her. The past twelve months she had to endure separation and pain. Thankfully she now resides in Heaven where there is no sorrow.

She is the beloved daughter of Emily Istre and beloved granddaughter of Marianne Miller, both of Fountain City.
