White, Earl C., age 85, of South Knoxville, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Baptist Hospital. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He was retired from the Knox County Sheriff’s Department as a process server.

Son, Hugo White of El Paso, Texas; brothers, Ray F. White, Roy G. White and wife Mavis; sister, Helen Weals; special nephew, Larry White; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Service

Family and friends will meet at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery icon Thursday at 11:30 AM for graveside services, Ministers Richard Gasser and Jeremy Baseman officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Sallie Royal Bolin

Bolin, Sallie Royal, age 94, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2003 at Asbury Place of Maryville Health Center. She was born icon November 11, 1909 to Rossie and Jefferson Royal in Georgetown, South Carolina. She attended Lincoln Memorial University where she met her beloved husband of 57 years, Horace Bolin. She was a longtime resident of Knoxville and graduated from the University of Tennessee and taught in Knox County Schools for many years. She was a very active member of Island Home Baptist Church and an associate member of Fairview United Methodist Church after moving to Maryville, where she was a resident of Asbury Place Retirement Home for many years. She was preceded in death by parents; 7 sisters and brothers; and husband, Horace Bolin.

Daughter, Ann Meyer and son-in-law, Herbert Meyer of Maryville; son, Robert D. Bolin and wife, Nancy Bolin of Hot Springs, Arkansas; grandchildren, Debbie Gayk of Knoxville, Mark Meyer of Loveland, Ohio, Alyson Stroud of Nashville, Brent Bolin of Conway, Arkansas; great-grandchildren, Shannon, Lucas, and Susan Gayk of Knoxville, Danielle Meyer of Loveland, Ohio, Hunter Stroud of Nashville, Lauren and Nicholas Bolin of Conway, Arkansas.

Funeral service 2:00 PM Tuesday, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Dwight Jenkins and Dr. Jerald W. Russell officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service. Interment icon will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at Asbury Place Retirement Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Hayes officiating. Deaderick, Kenneth, age 89, of South Knoxville, passed away Friday, January 2, 2004 at Baptist Hospital. Member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and veteran of World War II. He was a 54-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and a 50-year member of the Shekinah Lodge. Preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. I.C. Deaderick and sisters, Alsie Lee Carver and Wilma Draper.

Wife, Evelyn; sons, Charles Ray and wife, Ann, James Kenneth and wife, Faye, Melvin; daughter, Sandra Toney; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Charles Price; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by parents, William Gordon and Jennie Lee Gammon Carroll; grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. J.H. Gammon; daughter Kimberly Ann Carroll; sister, Helen Lee Carroll.

Harry Hubert Chitwood

Chitwood, Harry H., age 83, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2004 in Asheville, NC following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Harry was born icon on October 17, 1920 in Knoxville. After serving twenty years in the US Navy, Harry returned to the South Knoxville area where he conducted a general contracting business for many years until he retired in the late 1980’s. Harry and his wife Bobbie spent their retirement gardening, remodeling their home and enjoying the company of each other and their grandchildren. Since Bobbie’s death, Harry has been in Asheville, NC with Conrad, Anita and the boys. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Bobbie Jo Chitwood.

Survivors

Son Conrad Chitwood, daughter-in-law Anita; grandsons Eli and Grey Chitwood; niece Karin Hurst; nephew Bill Stanton; brother Jess Wrinkle; nieces Ann, Betty, Carol; and nephew Stanley; friends and neighbors of Goldfinch Avenue.

Vernette B. McCarter

McCarter, Vernette B., age 92, of Seymour, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2004 at Brakebill Nursing Home. She was a member and founder of Saint Paul Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Arcadia Chapter 362. Preceded in death by husband of 73 years, Coy R. McCarter; son Herbert L. McCarter; parents Howard and Hattie Bolden; brother Gordon Bolden and sister Alma Bolden.

Daughters and sons-in-law: Edith and James O’Dell, Jr. of Knoxville; Gladys and James Brackett of Seymour; Rebecca and Lonnie Prater of Seymour; Hilda and Fred Mikels of Knoxville; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Worked for East Tennessee Packing Company for many years. Preceded in death by husband Milas Hurst; son Charles Glass; step-daughter Geraldine Littrell; step-son Jack Hurst.
