Bruce, John Samuel (Sam) – age 65 of North Knoxville, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at Baptist Medical Center. Sam’s 65 years were filled with energy, faith and a deep love for his family and friends. He grew up in Boston, GA and has called Knoxville home for 36 years. Sam served in the Air Force and was stationed in Japan. He was a long time member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. He was employed by National Waterworks (Davis Meter) for 40 years as a District Manager. Sam served as an Associate Member on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Association of Utility Districts and was placed on their wall of fame. He loved the outdoors where he spent time hunting, fishing, golfing, camping and feeding his chipmunks. His favorite hobby, however, was aviation. He was an avid pilot who spent time hanging out at Island Home Airport. Sam’s greatest passion was for his wife, 2 children and their spouses and 4 grandchildren. His quick wit, smooth demeanor and South Georgia accent will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Lee and his staff at Baptist Hospital for the love and care of Sam. Preceded in death by parents, Walter and Mary Ruth Bruce.

Survived by his best friend and wife, Janice Schneider Bruce; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Kristy Bruce; daughter and son-in-law, Jami and Brad Dye; grandchildren, Jake, Sam, Lauren and Hayden; brother and sister-in-law, Walt and Jill Bruce; sister, Jeanne Bradshaw; sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Ed Jackson; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Marion Bruce; sister, Mary Burleson; brother and sister-in-law, Al and Linda Bruce; brother, Mike Bruce; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Johnny and Susie Schneider and many nieces and nephews.

Service

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 27 from 5:00 to 7:30 PM at Wallace Memorial Baptist Church and a celebration of his life will follow with Rev. Doug White, Dr. Mike Boyd, and Rev. Kent Williams officiating. Family and friends will meet at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel Wednesday and proceed to the Mausoleum located next to the funeral home for an 11:00 AM Committal Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wallace Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 701 Merchants Drive, Knoxville, TN 37912 or the First Baptist Church of Boston, GA, 31626. Davis, Verna Alice, died Sunday, February 15, 2004 at NHC Healthcare Center in Oak Ridge. She moved from Knoxville to Oak Ridge Retirement Center in 1998. Mrs. Davis was a member of Vestal United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Gus Davis; husband, Fred C. Davis; and sisters, Mae Phelps and Georgia Clark.

Survivors

Sister, Kathleen Watson; nieces, Nancy Cooper and Janice Bowles of Atlanta; 3 great-nieces and 1 great-nephew. Mrs. Davis touched the lives of so many people with her kind and gentle spirit.

Boyd Alexander (Pete) Rudder

Rudder, Boyd Alexander (Pete), age 96, of South Knoxville, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2003 in Louisville, KY. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church for eighty-one years and had retired from Sterchi Brothers Furniture Company in 1974. He was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors

His wife of sixty-five years, Pearl Kagley Rudder; daughters: Carol K. Long of Louisville, KY and Deania L. Martens of Marengo, IA. Also succeeding him are sons-in-law Jerry Long and Kenneth Martens and grandchildren Jay and Chad Long of Louisville, KY; Alicia and Craig Bean, and Misty Martens of Cedar Rapids, IA. He leaves a sister Marion Rudder Ford of Knoxville. In addition, there are many nieces and nephews.

Service

Family will greet friends at Berry Funeral Home on Chapman Highway from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church on Maryville Pike in Knoxville with Rev. Deron Cobb Officiating. Interment icon will be at Mount Olive Cemetery icon on Maryville Pike.

Harry N. Yarnell, Jr.

Yarnell, Harry N., Jr. “Brother”, age 79 of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at the home of his sister, Betty Hunley. Veteran of WW II and retired from AT&T. Preceded in death by parents, Harry N. Yarnell, Sr and Martha Elizabeth King Yarnell; former wife, Catherine Geros Yarnell; sister, Hazel Yarnell Braswell.

Son, Buzz Yarnell of Augusta, GA; daughters, Julia “Judy” Dean of West Palm Beach, FL; Virginia “Ginger” Mills and husband, Richard of Montgomery, AL; grandchildren, Laura Mills Justice and husband, Jeff; Emile “Amy” Mills; Katherine “Kathy” Hardy and husband, Jim; Jennifer Martha Dean; Katrina Irene Watrous and husband, Anthony; Shawn Yarnell; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Frank Yarnell, Sr. and wife, Frances of Maryville; sisters, Mary Ruth Maples of Taylorsville, GA; Agnes Mikels of Seymour; Betty Hunley of Knoxville; Ruby Krosnes and husband, Oscar of Hermitage, TN; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mattie Ruth Burdine

Burdine, Mattie Ruth, age 84, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, March 29, 2004 at 11:50 AM at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville and was retired from House-Hasson. Preceded in death by parents, Wesley and Luvenie Burdine; sister, Marybelle Burdine; and brothers, Ben, Tim and John Burdine.

sisters-in-law, Mildred B. Tarwater of Rockford and Lucy M. Burdine of Michigan; several nieces, nephews and special friends.

Donald Watt

Watt, Donald E., was born icon in Groton, New York on February 18, 1929 to Gordon and Alice Watt. Preceded in death by parents and brother, Gordon J. Watt; sister, Mildred Stickle and his infant son, Keith Watt. Don served in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. He retired from Philips Magnavox in 1991.

Wife, Janet L. Watt; daughters, Alice A. Almering of Belgium; Collette M. Cimino of Clearwater, Florida; sons, Clinton J. Watt of Clearwater, FL; Andrew J. Watt of Knoxville; Ian A. Watt of Knoxville; step-son, Jason A. Duby of Knoxville; granddaughter, Andrea M. Almering; grandson, Philip A. Almering. Don was an avid golfer, enjoyed oil painting and cooking. He was a good neighbor and friend to many people and animals. He will be missed.

Spangler, Mary Almeda, age 71, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2004 at Baptist Hospital. Preceded in death by daughter, Katheryn Frances Spangler; brother, Bud Moore.

Waddell, John E., age 78, of South Knoxville, went home with Jesus Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004. Longtime member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church. Founder and owner of Waddell Motors, Incorporated. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army, and a Mason. Preceded in death by parents, John A. and Lois Waddell; daughter, Terry W. Williams.

Much loved and loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy Wells Waddell; daughter and son-in-law P. Susan and Forrest Orr; son, Douglas E. Waddell; grandchildren, Paula R. and husband, Leonard Bradford; Pamela S. and husband, Joey Bailey; Melissa W. and husband, Michael Moore; Nicholas L. Orr; Kimberly A. James Holland Cooper Ingram
4/9/2004

Ingram, James Holland Cooper, age 81, died at St. Mary’s Hospital April 9, 2004 after a prolonged illness. He was a veteran of World War II during which he served in the Air Force in the Pacific. After his plane went down followed by a raid over Borneo he received a Purple Heart. He was the owner of Stubley Knox-Litho since 1971 and was always proud that his sons would continue in his business. He was a member of Rotary International and never missed a weekly meeting in 30 years. As an avid golfer he made many lasting friendships and special golfing buddies. He was preceded in death by parents, Elizabeth and Floyd Ingram; his youngest sister, June Elmore; sons; Clarke Ingram and Dean Ingram.

Survivors

Wife of 59 years, Bernardine Grant Ingram; son, Gib Ingram; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Teresa Ingram; daughter, E. Holland Ingram of Key West, Fla., daughter-in-law and widow of Dean, Debbie Ingram; grandsons, Logan Ingram and Grant Ingram.

Commissioner Howard Pinkston

Pinkston, Commissioner Howard “Nookie”, age 63, surrounded by his loving family, passed away at his home February 14. 2004, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Howard was born, raised and educated in South Knoxville. As a longtime member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church, Howard served as a deacon. He spent his entire adult life as a small businessman employed by Burgin Dodge and then operating Pinkston Motors with his older brother, Paul. Pinkston Motors became a focal point of Republican statewide campaigns with candidates for Governor and the United States Senate ending their campaigns at the car lot. Howard was elected to the Knox County Commission in 1990, defeating a popular incumbent. Pinkston’s standing with the people of South Knoxville was such that he was reelected in 1994, 1998 and 2002 without opposition in either the primary or general elections. He served in various capacities as a member of the Commission, chairing the Economic Development Committee, the Board of Zoning Appeals and was a longtime member of the Finance Committee. Howard was recognized as one of the most influential voices on the Commission and was devoted to the people of South Knoxville. Howard was preceded in death by his father, Paul Pinkston, Sr. and sister, Joni Pinkston Nine.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Pinkston; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Stephanie Pinkston; son, Doug Pinkston of Chicago; mother, Mildred Pinkston; sister, Barbara; brother and sister-in-law, Paul Jr. and Dorothy Pinkston; nephew, Greg Pinkston; as well as sister-in-law, Rebecca “Susie” Brock, all of Knoxville; brother-in-law, Owen Nine of Augusta, Georgia and by his special friend and beloved pet-companion, Lucky Pinkston.

Service

Funeral services for Commissioner Pinkston will be held at 8:00 PM Monday at Sevier Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale will also speak. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Knox County Commission. Pallbearers will be Richard Parker, Richard “Ras” Scruggs, Robert “Bob” Neff, Ronnie Stinnett, David Childress, Bill Webb, Martin Cagle, Carroll Ailshie and Jack Barnes. Family and friends will meet at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Sevier Heights Baptist Church and go in procession to Woodlawn Cemetery icon for a 12:00 Noon interment icon service. In lieu of flowers, it was Commissioner Pinkston’s wish that any and all memorials made in his memory go to the Baptist Hospice, in care of Baptist Hospital System Foundation, Baptist Medical Tower, Suite 530, 101 Blount Avenue Knoxville, TN 37920. Broome, Lawrence S. (Larry), age 85, of Seymour, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004 after a brief battle with cancer. He was a retired construction electrician. Preceded in death by parents, three brothers, and one sister.

Wife, Dorothy Broome; son, Ernie Broome and wife Judy; son, Don Dodson and wife Peggy; daughter, Vera LaFollette; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Son and daughter-in-law, Richard “Ras” and Janice L. Scruggs of Dandridge, Tennessee; 5 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
