Retired from CSX Railroad with 28 years service. Preceded in death by son, Jimmy Gatewood; mother, Katherine Jane Mersch; sister, Alana Barr.

Pollard, Bessie Mae, age 95, of South Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at Hillcrest South Nursing Facility. Member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church and retired from the Veterans Administration. Preceded in death by parents, C.E. and Eliza Julian Burnette; husband, Frank W. Pollard; brothers, Lyndel and Fonde Burnette; and sisters, Grace Watson and Catherine Cowden.

Survivors

Daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Edd Norton; son, Bob W. Pollard; grandchildren: John Norton, Bobby and Jacque Norton, Jody and Joy Pollard all of Knoxville, and Jimmy Pollard of Florida; great-grandchildren: Jennifer and Jack Norton, Sarah, Aubrey and Leif Pollard; several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will meet 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery icon for graveside services at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Abernathy officiating. Pallbearers will be John and Bob Norton, Jody Pollard, John Edwards, and Charles and Kenneth Cowden. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sevier Heights Baptist Church TV Ministry. Garland, Mary Elisabeth (Scruggs), age 81 of Maryville passed away Thursday September 5, 2002. She attended New Salem United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by her parents Nellie and Roy Scruggs, brother Ford Scruggs and husband Leonard Garland.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Shelby Garland; sister Roxie Williams; sisters-in-law Ida Scruggs and Ruth Garland; brother-in-law Cleve Scarbrough; several nieces and nephews; and best friends Lillie Mae and Allen Pass, Gladys Self and Anna Mae Chasteen.

WILHELMI, LILLIAN ROLEN (AUNT LILLIAN), age 91, of Halls, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a retired registered nurse anesthetist at Harlan Appalachian Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Kentucky. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Loyall, Kentucky. Preceded in death by husband, George Wilhelmi; parents, Henry Rolen and Myrtle Rolen Houser; son, Marvin Rolen; brothers, Homer and Gaston Rolen; sister, Marie Day.

Survived by son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Maelene Rolen; grandchildren, Andrew Laesser, Melissa Hall, Eddie Rolen, Erin Latham; 8 great-grandchildren; special nieces, Cookie Taylor, Debbie Haynes, Becky Tolf, Toni Gail Tretera, Donna Kemper, Sarah Hatfield; nephew, Berlin Hatfield, Jr.; several great nieces and nephews.

Frank Ensley
9/7/2002

Ensley, Frank, age 85, a resident of Knox County, died Saturday, September 7, 2002 after a brief illness. Born August 12, 1917 in Jackson County, NC, he was the last surviving child of the late Tolvin B. Josephine Middleton Ensley, of Jackson County. The Middleton and Ensley families were among the earliest settlers in Jackson County (formerly Buncombe/Haywood County) NC. An area known as Polly Middleton Gap, located in the Canada Community of Jackson County, was named after his great-grandmother, Mary "Polly" Middleton, widow of Nathan Middleton, who was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. He was a WWII veteran, and after the war, moved to Knoxville, TN in l945, where he became Postmaster in the small community of Neubert Springs, TN. He retired from the Knoxville, TN Post Office in 1980 where he worked as a supervisor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose

Three children, Kenneth and Frank Ensley, Jr. Lynda Ensley Webster, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A private funeral service was held Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Knoxville, TN. Condolences may be addressed to: The Ensley Family, 2331 Winners Drive, Knoxville, TN 37920. William Ray “Bill” Pierson

Pierson, William Ray “Bill”, age 65, of South Knoxville, left to spend his joyful life with the Lord at 3:45 PM on Wednesday, September 8, 2004. He was of the Baptist faith. He was retired from General Shale Product Corporation Engineering Department with 29 years of service. He was an avid hunter, race fan, and lover of antique cars. Preceded in death by parents, David and Pearl Goff Pierson; sister, Marie Roberts Free; brother, John Pierson; son-in-law, David Ashley and sister-in-law, Anna Huff.

Survivors

He leaves to celebrate his memory his loving wife, Billie Kay Pierson; stepdaughters, Brenda Ashley; Susan (Jay) Alawadi; granddaughters, Beth (Mark) Patton, Cara Yvette Alawadi; great-grandsons, Hunter and Blake Patton, Shallan Alawadi; expected, Alexander Joe Lewis; adopted grandson, Marco Antonio Vestal; daughters, Debbie and Karen; brothers, Worley (Peggy) Pierson of Augusta, Georgia; James (Pat) Pierson of Martineza, Georgia; sisters, Ella Mae (Bill) Holden of Johnson City, Tennessee; Georgia Richardson of Johnson City, Tennessee; special nephew, Jacky Roberts; special friends, Helen Coley and Mark Vestal and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. He will be deeply missed and always loved.

Family and friends will meet at Sherwood Memorial Gardens Sunday for 2:00 PM graveside services. Family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Herschel W. Peek
6/28/2004

Peek, Herschel W., age 64, died June 28, 2004 at Baptist Hospital after a courageous battle against leukemia. He was the owner and publisher of Peek‘Size Football Guides and a graduate of the University of Tennessee. He was born icon in Knoxville, Tennessee on December 22, 1939. Preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ruth.

Survivors

His daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Lance Lourie and two grandchildren, Jessica and Austin of Atlanta, GA; also brother and sister-in-law, Leslie and Pat Peek of Macon, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Belinda and Jim Smith of Merritt Island, FL.

Service

A private Burial service will be held in accordance with Herschel’s wishes. The family will host an informal Memorial Service on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Ramsey House Plantation at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphomia Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue-Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Lurell Powell

Powell, Lurell, age 72, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully at Park West Hospital on Thursday, September 5, 2002, from acute respiratory failure. Born September 16, 1929, in Tupelo, MS, he was preceded in death by parents, James Claude and Maudie Mae; three brothers, Bordo, Razzie, and Ernest; and four sisters, Claudia, Azilee, Mattie Sue, and Regina.

Survivors

He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Laverne; two brothers, Fred and Jonathan; two sisters, Agnes Johnson and Mary Nell Farris, of Tupelo, MS; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Randy Balogh of Lebanon, OH; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Hobbie Sealy of Montgomery, AL; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Julie Powell of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Ginger Cronogue of Cordova, TN, Emily Sealy of Montgomery, AL, Joshua, Anna and Zachary Powell of Knoxville, TN; and great-grandson, Jacob Cronogue of Cordova, TN. He served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1949-1950. He retired in 1991 after a long career as a highly respected sub-contractor of carpet installation. Lurell was of Pentecostal faith and loved the Lord.

A special service of remembrance will be held from 2:30 PM until 4:30 PM on Monday, September 9, 2002 at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Green, Snowdy B., age 85 of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2002 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. Mrs. Green was a member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church and was preceded in death by parents, Columbus and Mary Deitz and husband, Max H. Green.

Covington; son, James E. Covington; parents, Olaf and Lois Headrick; sister, Mary Helen Shook; brothers, Jerry J. Headrick and Thomas R. Headrick; son-in-law, Neil A. Reed; grandson, James R. (Jim Bob) McMahan.

Survived by daughters, Anna Lasley of Knoxville and Mary Ruth Townsend of Lenoir City; sons, David Covington and Rick Covington both of Knoxville, and John Headrick of Lenoir City; nine brothers and two sisters; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Johnson had worked for Roddy Coca Cola Bottling Company for 13 years and most recently worked with Ted Russell Nissan. Preceded in death by parents, Orvil and Sherry Johnson.

Survived by loving wife of 18 years, Elizabeth Johnson; sons, Lee and Kirk Johnson; brothers, Daryl and Michael Johnson; aunt and uncle, Allen and Libby Johnson; brother-in-law, Phil Johnson and wife, Missy.

A memorial service will be held at 6 PM on Sunday, September 19, 2004 at Gospel Baptist Church, A Avenue in South Knoxville with Rev. I.A. Sparks officiating. No other services or visitation are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Gospel Baptist Church Youth Fund.
