CARTER, GEORGIA RIDENOUR - age 69, of Maynardville, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2001. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Maynardville, Tenn., the Secretary for First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Knoxville from 1958 to 1995, and also served as Secretary for the Midland Baptist Association in 1999. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman P. and Bertha Ridenour; husband, Lester Carter and sister, Ruby Ulichik. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Paul Walker; grandchildren, Laura, Clint and Brandon Walker; great-granddaughter, Abby Walker; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and JoAnn Ridenour, all of Maynardville; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Ted Carter of Huntsville, Ala.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 8 p.m. Friday, Mynatt's Chapel, Rev. David Lancaster and Rev. Herbert Jones officiating. Family and friends will meet at Woodlawn cemetery 2 p.m. Saturday for an interment icon service. Arrangements by Mynatt's.

CARTER, MS. BETSY - of Knoxville, departed this life on January 16, 2001 at U.T. Hospital. She was a member of College Hill Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was formerly employed by University of Tennessee Golf Range Day Care Center. She leaves to cherish her fond memories a loving and devoted son, Ahmad Dozier; one granddaughter whom she loved and adored, Alexis Dozier, loving and devoted brothers, Gene and Willie Louis Carter; one niece she helped raise and adored immensely, Anetra Carter, all of Knoxville; one loving sister, Pam Varner of Atlanta, GA; uncle, Joe Riggins of Akron, Ohio; two god-sons, Charles Louis Byrd and Tyrone Mackerson; a host of other special nephews, cousins, aunts and friends to include Matt and Meredith Deveraux and Marilyn McAfee; special sisters in Christ, Roberta Campbell, Georgia Ann Shingles, Arlene Sherman, Janette Prescod, Sis. Hattie Wright, Sis. Luella McBath and Betty Wiggins-Byrd. A very special thank you is extended to The Dialysis Clinic, Inc., Martin Mill Pike and to U.T. Hospital. The family will receive friends Sunday, 1:30-2:00 p.m. at College Hill Seventh Day Adventist Church. In case of inclement weather the services will be held at Jarnigan's Chapel. CLAPP, GEORGE ROSS - age 83 of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. Member of Fountain City Presbyterian Church. He was past secretary-treasurer and president of Teamster's Local 519 and past president of Teamster's Retirees Club. Member of Charles McKiney Lodge #433 F&AM, was a 32nd Degree Mason and a 50 year member of the Eagles. He spent his life fighting for their benefit of working people. Preceded in death by wife, Loraine Clapp; sister, Geneva Butler. Survived by daughter and son in law, Brenda & Carroll Logan; grandchildren and spouses, Rhodes & Amy Logan, Heather & Rob Bartlett of Cleveland, Tenn.; great grandchildren, Wendy and Alex Logan; sisters; brothers and spouses, Jim & Mildred Clapp, Agnes & John Beeler, Willie & James Lester of Chattanooga, David and Martha Clapp, Chester and Wanda Clapp of Wichita, Kan., Ina Clapp and Bill Butler; many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Service 8 p.m. Monday Mynatt's Chapel. Rev. Max Reddick officiating. Family and friends will meet at Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery in Grainger County at 11 a.m. Tuesday for interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Foundation of Fountain City Presbyterian Church, 500 Hotel Rd. Knoxville, Tenn. 37918. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Mynatt's.

DOUGLAS, BEN - of Knoxville passed away January 19, 2001 at Ft. Sanders Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date. Family will be at the home of Adell Brown 714 Houston Street. Jarnigan & Son Mortuary in charge.

ELLENBURG, REV. JOHN - age 78 of Knoxville, passed away January 19, 2001 at St. Mary's Medical Center following a short illness. He was a retired minister and an Army veteran of WWII. Preceded in death by brother, Earl Ellenburg. Survived by wife, Betty Ellenburg; sons & daughters in law, Dennis & Linda Ellenburg and John & Lea Ellenburg all of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughters & son in law, Barbara & Billy Rogers of New Orleans, Nancy Pollard of Powell, and Linda Mendenhall of Knoxville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; brother, Henry Ellenburg of Knoxville; sisters, Mary Louise Beers, Emma Miller both of Knoxville, & Ruth Thompson of Dallas, TX; several nieces & nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Weaver's Chapel with a memorial service to follow at 8 p.m. Rev. Alan Smith officiating. Arrangements by Weaver Funeral Home, 5815 Western Ave.

DAVIS, MRS. GEORGIA STONE - forsook her mortal coil on Tuesday evening, January 16, 2001 to go to her joyful homecoming with Jesus and her beloved family and friends that have gone on before her. Mrs. Davis was born in Detroit, Mich. on February 21, 1913, was educated at the old Knoxville Colored High School, having received her high school diploma from there at the age of 14, in 1927. Mrs. Davis then continued her education by matriculating to Knoxville College before receiving her Bachelors Degree in Education from Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State College (now Tennessee State University) in Nashville in 1931. After college graduation, Mrs. Davis began her professional career as a teacher at Green Elementary School of Knoxville, and shortly thereafter, in 1936, she was joined in matrimony to the late Mr. Alex McMillian Davis of Knoxville. Mrs. Davis successfully pursued her career shaping young minds as an elementary school teacher for many, many years while simultaneously devoted herself to the duties of wife, homemaker, and mother of their daughter, Margaret Ann and their son, Alex McMillan Jr., as her family moved throughout North Carolina and Virginia prior to her ultimate return to Knoxville in 1991. After this final relocation, Mrs. Davis remained active with community organizations in Knoxville such as her chosen place of worship, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, prior to her passing. Preceding Mrs. Davis in death were her husband, Mr. Alex M. Davis, Sr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George M. Stone, and a brother in law, Mr. Charles Pearcy. She leaves many behind to mourn her loss, including her son, Mr. Alex M. Davis, Jr. of Everett, Wash.; daughter, Mrs. Margaret Ann McNaughton of Boca Raton, Fla.; granddaughters, Lallis Cotton and Allison Cotton both of Boulder, Colo.; a devoted sister, Mrs. Margaret Pearcy of Knoxville, a loving brother in law, Mr. Fred R. Davis, Jr. of Knoxville; sister in law, Novella Davis of Nashville, Tenn.; nieces, Andrea Davis Turner of Knoxville, Adrienne Davis of Stone Mountain, Ga. and Vernessa Davis Ekelem of Jackson, Tenn., a nephew, George L. Davis, Jr. of Knoxville; her very special friends, Kimberly and Maurice Rogers of Knoxville; and many other grieving family and friends. At the request of the deceased, the body will be viewed only at the Chapel of Sherwood Memorial Gardens prior to the graveside service on Saturday, January 20, 2001 at 2 p.m. The family will assemble at 1:45 p.m. at the Chapel of Sherwood Memorial Gardens. Entombment will follow. Father Paul Shields Walker officiating. Arrangements by Unity Mortuary.

FLYNN, JOE HAROLD - age 69, of Knoxville, finished his final earthly project on Thursday, January 18, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Flynn was a member of Central Baptist Church, Fountain City. He was retired from Barber and McMurray Architects, Inc. and was Owner of Flynn Pedal Steel Guitars. He loved to talk to everyone about the steel guitar. Sponsor of Knoxville Steel Guitar Conventions. He was Project Manager for The Ronald McDonald House and served for twelve years as a Board Member. He was Chief Project Manager for the 1982 World's Fair and The T.V.A. Towers. He admired people who held his work ethic, "work today as hard as you can, there might not be a tomorrow." His parents, Dewey and Cecil Flynn, three brothers, Robert, Jack and Mitchell Flynn preceded Mr. Flynn in death. Survivors include his cherished wife, Lynn B. Flynn; children and spouses, Connie and Mike, Dan and Lynne, Theresa and Chris, Elisabeth and Jack, Susan and Bob; nine grandchildren, Becky, Jenny, Amy, Andy and John Vandergriff, Hunter and Heath Baird, Sarah and Hannah Abernathy that will miss "Grand Daddy Flynn"; brothers, Dwight and wife, Barbara, George, Lowell and wife, Betty; sister, Trula Beazley and husband, Gail; sister-in-law, Doris Flynn; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday at Mynatt's Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet at Mynatt's by 10:30 a.m. Monday and proceed to Lynnhurst cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service, Dr. Fred Layman and Dan Baird officiating. Pallbearers will be Mike and Chris Vandergriff, Jack Abernathy, George and Lowell Flynn, Conley Miracle and John Hill. In lieu of flowers make donations in his memory to The Ronald McDonald House, Knoxville. Mynatt's in charge.

FORD, NELLE HIPSHER - age 82 of Talbott, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Ford was a long time member of Talbott Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Ford; son in law, Lee Pridgen; two sisters; and five brothers. Surviving is her son, Marvin Ford of Talbott; daughter, Barbara Pridgen of Talbot; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several nieces; nephews; and other relatives; special sisters in law, Norma Ford of Morristown, Carmone Hipshire of New Market, and Ida Hipshire of Morristown. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday evening, January 19, 2001, from the Farrar Funeral Home Chapel in Jefferson City with Reverend Scott Cline officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10:45 a.m. Saturday morning January 20, 2001 at Hamblen Memory gardens for an 11 a.m. graveside interment icon service. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday evening prior to services at the funeral home. Arrangements made by Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City.

HORTON, NANCY DAYLE - age 64 of Maryville passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at Ft. Sanders Park West Hospital in Knoxville. She was a member of First United Methodist Church Maryville. She was a retired Registered Nurse with Blount Memorial Hospital with over 35 years of service. She was a member of the Alcoa Garden Club, Daughter of the Pioneers of Washington State. Preceded in death by parents, Dale Barnes and Virginia Brines. Survivors include; husband, Ray E. Horton; son and daughter in law, Jeffrey & Patricia; granddaughter, Rachel; sister, Shirley Schattenkerk of Renton, Wash.; brother & sister in law, John & Mary Barnes of Tacoma, Wash.; many devoted nieces and nephews. Family and friends will assemble for graveside service and interment icon at 10 a.m. Monday January 22, 2001 at Grandview cemetery with Rev. HURST, JACK L. - age 69 of Morristown, passed away Friday morning at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Morristown. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Gentry-Griffey Chapel.

KIRBY, NAOMI E. - age 90, of Knoxville, died Thursday, January 18, 2001 at Fort Sanders Parkwest Hospital. She was a member of the former Virginia Ave. United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy S. Kirby and son, Max Kirby. She is survived by daughter and son in law, Shirley and Jimmy Hensley; son and daughter in law, Otis and Kathryn Kirby all of Knoxville; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren; sister, Leona Wise of Knoxville and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Rev. A.J. Crawford officiating. Family and friends will meet Monday at Highland Memorial cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service and interment. Family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Sunday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.

LAWSON, EVELYN MAY - age 82 of Decatur, Tenn., formerly of Knoxville passed away Friday January 19, 2001 at her residence. She was a member of the West Lawnsdale Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Lawrence H. Lawson; parents, William and Bessie May; brothers, Walter, Ford and Kyle May. Survivors: son, Don Lawson and wife, Lynda of Knoxville; brother, Jack May of Decatur; sisters, Mable Jackson, Mattie Shackleford, Helen France and Elizabeth Shearl, all of Decatur; grandchildren, Donna Broberg and husband, Tom, and Larry Lawson and wife, Deana, all of Knoxville; great grandchildren, Brittany, Brett, Kayla, Bryan and Jesse, of Knoxville; and many nieces and nephews. McKINLEY, MINNIE CLEO DAY - 80 formerly of Yadkinville, NC, died Friday, January 19, 2001 in Winston-Salem, NC after being in declining health for a number of years. She was born July 11, 1920 in Knoxville, Tenn. to John Edward and Susie Bailey Day. Surviving are a son, William Carroll McKinley of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Joyce M. Hill of Winston-Salem, Shirley M. (Don) Sharpe of King and Linda M. (Donald) Burcham of Yadkinville; a brother, Homer Carl (Bea) Day of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; one special granddaughter, Tammy Ridings; two step grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; special niece, Judy (Butch) Carr and special nephew, Robert Eugene (Wanda) Day both of Knoxville, Tenn. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 21, 2001 at 3 p.m. in the Capella Church of Christ Church on Flat Shoals Road in King, NC with Larmar Tillman, Min. and Rev. Jim Saul, officiating. MINGE, WILLIE S. - 83 years old, died at Parkwest Hospital, Wednesday, January 17, 2001. Preceded in death by grandsons, Earl Minge and Bruce Sipe. Member of Trinity Baptist Church. He was a retired machinist from Y-12 Union Carbide after 40 years of service and also owner and operator of Minge's Greenhouses. Survived by loving wife of 64 years, Grace Wallace Minge; sons and daughters in law, Stanley and Peggy Minge, and Robert and Becky Minge; daughters and sons in law, Ann and Howard Owen, Jane and Ronnie Smith, Vivian and Barry Hodges, and Wilma and Lester Monroe; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Weaver's Chapel with the service to follow at 8 p.m. Reverends David Stooksbury and Billy Edmonds officiating. PEBLEY, CLYDE LAWRENCE, SR. - age 94 of Clinton, passed away Friday, January 19, 2001 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He was a beloved member of Clinton Second Baptist Church for over fifty years. He was a long time employee of Clinton Magnet Mills. Preceded in death by daughter, Claudia Joan Pebley; parents, William & Myra Alexander Pebley; brother, Robert Wayne Pebley. Born March 25, 1906 in Coal Creek, now know as Lake City. Survivors: wife of 69 years, Ruth Courtney Pebley of Clinton; son, Mr. Clyde Pebley, Jr. of Clinton; daughters, Mrs. Joyce Templin of Lake City, Mrs. Geraldine Brown & husband, Bill of Clinton, Mrs. Kaye Harness & husband, Walter of Clinton, Mrs. Maxine Pebley Wilson of Clinton; brother, Kenneth Pebley & wife, Naomi of Lake City; grandchildren, Skipper Templin & wife, Jeanette of Lake City, Michael Templin & wife, Rose of Caryville, Kerry Templin & wife, Kaye of Lake City, Patrick Templin of Lake City, Lori Noonan & husband, David of Caryville, David Cox & wife, Kathy of Oak Ridge, Kelly Wilson & husband, Terry of Clinton, Cindy Knott & husband, Jeff of Lake City, John Pebley of Clinton, Jennifer Bowling & husband, Rodney of Clinton; 15 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, friends & loved ones.
