ABEL, JOHN F. - age 58 of Knoxville, passed away Monday morning at Fort Sanders Hospital. He was a member of First United Methodist Church Dayton, Tenn. He received his Bachelors degree and Masters degree at the University of Tennessee. He was a past member of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and the Al Curtis Orchestra. He was band director at Bearden High School for 29 years until retirement. He was with Krogers for the last five years. He was an adjudicator and clinician in the Southeastern states as well as Mexico and Spain and Italy. He was an honorary life member of East Tenn. Band and Orchestra Assoc. member Phi Beta Mu National Band Directors Assoc. He was a member of Knoxville Musicians Assoc. Local #546. He was preceded in death by parents, Fulton and Grace Abel; and sister, Emily Jo Morgan. Survived by daughters, Betsy Abel, Katie Abel, and their mother, Carolyn Able all of Knoxville; sister, Nan Henderson of Cleveland. Memorial services will be conducted 7 p.m. Friday Gentry-Griffey Chapel. Mr. Tom Harrington officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Diabetes Assoc. and Bearden High School Band c/o Bearden High School Knoxville, Tenn. Family will receive friends immediately following services at Gentry- Griffey Chapel.

ANGEL, CHARLES WADE - age 84, of West Knoxville, went to his heavenly home on Monday, January 22, 2001, from Little Creek Sanitarium. He was the son of William Wade Angel and Lena Parham Angel, who preceded him in death. A member of the Presbyterian Church since his youth, Mr. Angel served as an elder for many years at Concord Presbyterian Church. For the past fourteen years, he has been a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church and active in the Saints Alive Sunday School Class. Mr. Angel graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Engineering in 1939, where he was a Major in the ROTC, a member of Tau Beta Pi and President of Scabbard and Blade. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater with the 33rd Division and was awarded a Bronze Star for Bravery in Action. After the war, he was employed as an Engineer at Oak Ridge, where he worked at ORNL, Y-12 and K-25 at various times during his thirty-one year career. Charlie, a World Traveler, was a charter member of the Friendship Force of Knoxville, and a long-time member of Concord-Farragut Chapter of AARP. Survivors are his beloved wife of 58 years, Margaret Larson Angel; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard "Dick" and Cathy Webb Angel of Knoxville, John Edward and Roma Bowen Angel of Banner Elk, N.C., and daughter, Patricia Lynn Angel of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren, Catherine, Emily, David, Rebekah, and Eleanor Angel of Knoxville, and a step granddaughter, Jordan Joyce of Banner Elk, N.C. He also leaves brothers and sisters-in-law, Mac and Frances Abel of Concord, Bob and Mary Larson of Lenoir City, Alice Jo and Charles Schroeder of Lancaster, Penn., and Bert Larson of New Jersey. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church at 2:30 p.m. Friday with Rev. Vernon Holstad officiating. Memorials may be made to Orange Grove Center, 615 Derby Street, Chattanooga, TN 37404. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. BOND, WILEY BELTON - age 68, of Lenoir City, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at his home. He is a retired machinist from Union Carbide/ Viskase; serving on the Board of Union Carbide Employees Federal Credit Union for several years. A veteran of the US Army, member of Loudon First Baptist Church. BROOKS, HUBERT TYE - age 75, of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospice in Halls. He was a retired United States Air Force Veteran. He also retired as a school teacher from Powell High School in 1985. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Bachelors degree in Education. Preceded in death by parents, Curtis and Florence Sumpter Brooks and son, Carl Brooks. Born November 9, 1925, in Artimus, Kentucky, and lived many years in Pennington Gap, Virginia. Survivors: wife, Stella R. Brooks of Clinton; sons, David and Linda Brooks of Clinton, James and Susan Brooks of Maryville, and Earl and Joyce Brooks of Claxton; seven grandchildren, Benjamin Brooks, Daniel Brooks, Katelyn Brooks, Elizabeth Brooks, Joshua Brooks, Jessica Brooks and Sarah Brooks; sisters, Virginia Musick of Tallahassee, Fla., Katherine Walters of Monroe, Mich., and Jane and Lawrence Phipps of Richmond, Va.; brothers, J.C. FLURI, FRITZ - age 83, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital. A member of John Sevier Baptist Church and served in the Army Air Force 117 Infantry. Preceded in death by parents, William and Flora Fluri; brothers, William Fluri Jr., and Gordon Eugene Fluri; sister, Stella Fluri. Survivors include loving wife of 54 years, Polly Fluri; son, Philip and wife Janet Fluri; granddaughters, Alison and Jessica Fluri; special friends, Robert and Mossie Mellons. JONES, JOHN HEILMAN - age 88, of Newport, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2001, at the Jefferson City Health and Rehabilitation Center, after a short illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn Montsinger Jones. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Julia Jones Price of Morristown and sons, Dr. Chris Jones of Jefferson City, and Dr. Joseph Jones of Dahlonega, Ga.; his sister, Dorothy Jones Talcott of Newport; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Jones was a long time merchant, owning and operating Jones Clothing Store in downtown Newport for many years. A superior athlete, Mr. Jones excelled in all sports and was an avid golfer. LYNCH, DARLIS WILSON - of Middlesboro, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2001. She was born November 4, 1929, in Middlesboro, a daughter of Orlando Wilson and Maude Jane Keck Wilson. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Middlesboro and a member of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church of Middlesboro. She was retired from the United Mine Workers of American Labor Union and was a member of the Kentucky Path Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition to her parents, Darlis was preceded in death by her husband, James Hobart Lynch; one brother, Norman Wilson, and one sister, Lolita Wilson. Survivors include one son, James Kyle Lynch of Alexandria, Virginia; one sister and brother-in-law, Violet "Bo" Peters and Everett Peters of Harrogate, Tennessee; niece, Linda Peters Holt of Maynardville, Tennessee; nephew and wife, Denny and Sandy Peters of Tazewell, Tennessee; nephew and wife, Allen and Cindy Peters of Tazewell, Tennessee; nephew, Bill Peters of Merritt Island, Florida, and great nieces and nephews, Clay Holt, Kris Holt, Scott Peters, Steve Peters, Kellye Peters Carroll, Kayce Peters, Kory Holt, Kanyon Holt, Andy Holt, Christian Holt, Brandon Holt, Dakota Holt, Nicholas Holt, and Spencer Peters. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Hazel Beidleman of Bristol, Tennessee and brother-in-law and wife Marion and Bobbie Lynch of Harrogate, Tennessee. HUNT, EDWARD EVERHART, USAF RET., AFSN 2445A - age 93 of Gatlinburg, Tenn., passed away Monday, January 22, 2001 at Sevier County Health Care Center. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Galinburg and a former member of the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, Knoxville, Tenn. He was a former Commander of the Gatlinburg American Legion, a sponsor of the Junior Achievement Organization, a member of the VFW and Gatlinburg Kiwanis Club and a former Soutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America. An avid mountain hiker, Ed also loved the military service where he served with distinction for 20 years in the Air Force and 14 years in the Infantry and National Guard before Pearl Harbor and during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He joined the Boy Scouts in 1919 and served as Patrol Leader and Assistant Scoutmaster under the tutelage of Walter L. Bryant, Scoutmaster. Together, in 1929 they explored a wilderness trail in Canada and paddled a canoe from Canada to Knoxville down the various rivers. In 1930 he purchased a WWI OX-5 Jenny airplane for $75, flew it for one hour and crashed. His distinguished military career began as a ROTC Cadet in Knoxville High School before he graduated in 1926 as a First Lieutenant. He also was a track star. While he attended the University of Tennessee for 2 ½ years, he became a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Reserves with the 117th and 30th Infantry. He was an expert rifleman and won several matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. In 1929 following his appointment as a Flying Cadet at March Field, Calif., he enlisted in the 106th Observation Squadron. In 1931 he moved to Gatlinburg, Tenn. to establish a photography business, as well as joining the survey crew with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads in developing the roads to Clingman's Dome and Elkmont. In 1935 he was assigned as a First Lieutenant Inf. Res. To the 1458th CCC Company, Sugerlands, Gatlinburg. In 1936 he enrolled in the Boeing School of Aeronautics at Alameda, Calif. and continued as a Second Lieutenant Inf. Res. And also a Scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts. He was now an Eagle Scout of Troop 82, Bruno, Calif. In 1941 he was assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps, McClelland Field, Sacramento. Calif. and promoted to Captain as Squadron Commander, Operations & Training, Materials Division Chief. In 1942 he was assigned to SAD 2nd Strategic Air Depot of the 8th Service Command, England and promoted to Lt. Colonel. In 1945 he was assigned to Oklahoma City, Okla. as Director of materials , Supply Division. In 1947 he was assigned to the USAF Training Section at New York University where he also received his BS and masters degrees, Master of Public Admin. In 1949 he was assigned to the Congressional Liaison, reassigned to Air Force Section National Guard Bureau, Army Language School, Monterey, Calif. In 1952 he was transferred to London, England thence to MAD, HQUSEUCOM, Frankfurt, Germany and assigned to the secret project to arm Germany under EDC. He was promoted to permanent rank of Colonel and took charge of Advance Planning Group and moved to US HICOG, Germany. In 1954, he was assigned to the European Defense Community where he received the "Pin of Eagles" and a secret "APG" with MAAG (Military Assistance Advisory Group Germany). He was awarded the WWII, ETO, Bronze Star, French Croix de Guerre, and The Distinguished Service Medal, as well as many other honors. In 1956 he was assigned to the Memphis Air Depot Supply Division, Air Material Command Chief of Supply. In 1960 he retired as Colonel and was named Dean of Men at Iowa Wesleyan College. In 1963 he became the Program Director of Junior Achievement in Memphis, Tenn. In 1966 he became the Assistant Dean, College of Business, Memphis State University. Ed Hunt was a very remarkable man of many talents, printer, photographer, hiker in the mountains he loved, nature lover, American Legion member, computer expert, gardener, home builder, carpenter, electrician, plumber and at the age of 93 became the oldest living WWII survivor in Sevier County. He was also the oldest surviving recipient of the coveted Boy Scout award of "Eagle". He has indeed served God and man very well! His motto was whatever you do, do it well, with all your might. His love was with God, family, friends, relatives, the Boy Scouts, the mountains and the military. May the Lord smile on you Sir Edward, and rest in peace. He was preceded in death by parents, Chester and Edna Hunt; brother and sister in law, James L. and Louise Hunt and brother, Robert T. Hunt, all of Knoxville, Tenn. MEE, WILLIAM LYNN - age 65, of Strawberry Plains, Tenn., a proud and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and valued friend and mentor. (April 30, 1935 to January 21, 2001). He inspired many with his indomitable spirit. Preceded in death by father and mother, Clarence Alexander Mee and Naomi (Oma) Sands Mee. He was a HAM Radio operator (WA4TKN) and was retired from both Tucker Steel Corp. and Beverly Steel Corp.
