PENDERGAST, MR. WILLIAM CURTIS, SR. (BILL) - age 83 of 890 Stiner Road, Sharps Chapel's Beech Grove Community, born Aug. 20, 1917 in Terra Haute, Ind. passed away 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at Claiborne County Hospital. Preceded in death by his parents; Curtis Mason and Lulu M. Pendergast. He first moved to Sharps Chapel in 1970 part time before retirement. He retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1974 and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific as a Sergeant and his duties included to help set up and repair radar stations on various pacific islands during the war. After the war, he worked for Carnegie Institute/Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Dayton, Ohio as an electronic engineer. His hobbies include politics and world affairs, radio electronics, ham radio operator; K4KVC, surfing the internet, he enjoyed playing chess, the lake and fishing and loved his dogs and all wildlife. Survivors: wife of 34 years, Connie Pendergast, Sharps Chapel; children, William C. Pendergast, Jr. Las Vegas, Nev., Barbara L. Pendergast, Oceanside, Calif., David M. Pendergast, Philippines; grandchildren, Christine Pendergast, Dayton, Ohio, Kathy Pendergast, Kimberly Pendergast, both of the Philippines; daughters in law, Melody Pendergast, Las Vegas, Nev., Eden Pendergast, Philippines; step son, Clarence Lightle of Ind.; step daughter, Sandra Richardson of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Margot Hill, Ormond Beach, Fla., Marilyn Isay, Opelika, Ala.; host of nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends. Funeral services 1 p.m. Sat., Cooke Mortuary Chapel, Rev. Frank Brooks officiating with music by Scott West. Interment icon will follow at Brogan Family cemetery, Sharps Chapel. NELSON, RUBY C. - age 86, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, February 9, 2001 at Hillcrest North Nursing Home. She was a loyal wife and loving mother, Mrs. Nelson was a member of Grove City Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert A. Nelson; her parents, and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by sons and daughters in law, John C. and Shirley Nelson of Virginia Beach, Va., Sandy and Rachel Nelson, Chuck Nelson, and Bruce Nelson, all of Knoxville; daughters and son in law, Alberta B. Rogers of Knoxville, Betty Lou Weaver of Harriman, and Judith A. and Leonard R. Powell, Jr., of Knoxville; numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brothers, Billy Neal, and Jack Neal, both of Dayton, Tenn.; sisters, Jean Keever of Oak Ridge, and Louise Roberts of Harriman. Mrs. Nelson is at Highland Memorial Funeral Home, 5315 Kingston Pike, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday. OVERSTREET, TROY STEVEN - age 51 of Strawberry Plains, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2001 at St. Mary's Medical Center. Member of New Life United Methodist Church, U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors; parents, Troy & Betty Overstreet; sister, Karen Carr; nephews, Geoff & Aaron Carr; niece, Kimberly Carr; and many devoted friends & family. He was loved and will be missed by all. RADER, CHARLES E., Attorney at Law - 87, passed away on Feb. 6, 2001, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School in the Achievement Class and served on many boards. He was a past president of the Sons of the Revolution and the Downtown Sertoma Club. He belonged to the TN Bar Association, and the TN Trial Lawyers Association. Also, he was a member of Cherokee County Club and a lifetime member of Club LeConte. He was a native Knoxvillian, who lived here all of his life. He attended Boyd's Jr. High School and graduated from Old Knoxville High School, where he played the saxophone in the school band. He then graduated from the University of TN in 1934 and went on to obtain his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of TN Law School in 1936. He was a member of Delta Signa Phi Fraternity and a charter member of Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Society. After graduating from law school, he began to practice law with the firm of Lee, Cox and Hier. He served in World War II in the Army Corps in the weather service division in Asheville, NC. After World War II, he served in the reserves as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps. Mr. Rader returned to Knoxville and practiced law for more than sixty years before retiring. His most memorable case won women the right to teach school after marriage in Knox County, TN. Mr. Rader is predeceased by his parents: Charles Sanford Rader and Elizabeth Orr Rader, & his sister, Mary Lillian Adams. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Eleanor Wall Rader, his daughter, Candace E. Rader, who is also an attorney in Carrollton, GA, & daughters & sons-in-laws, Beth Rader and Don McKee of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Anne Rader and Trent Primm of Knoxville, TN & Linda Rader & David Pierson of Charlotte, NC. He, also, is survived by six grandchildren, Brad & Mac McKee, Katie and Kristie Primm, and Gwen and Marian Pierson and a nephew, Charles Rader Adams of Duluth, Georgia. A celebration of Mr. Rader's life will be held on Sun., Feb. 11, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Church Street United Methodist Church with Rev. William J. Fowler and Rev. Cabel Trent officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A private burial will take place Feb. 12, 2001. REED, CARRIE (MARIE) - age 78 of Knoxville, passed away Friday February 9, 2001 at UT Hospital. Member of Linden Ave. Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Rufus Reed; son, James Robert Reed; infant daughter, Mary Ruth Reed; parents, John & Lucy Stallings; and sister, Ruth Isabell. SHOWN, FLOYD C. (BEN) - age 89, of Knoxville, died Wed., Feb. 7, 2001, at Palm Gardens of Largo in FL. Mr. Shown was a member of Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Powell, where he had been an Elder and Sunday School Teacher. He was the retired owner of Knoxville Orthopedic Appliance Company. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice T. Shown; daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Laurence Tolle of Atlanta, Ind.; son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Sandra Shown of Knoxville; grandchildren, Ted Shown Jr., Tim Shown of Knoxville, Scott Tolle of Atlanta, Ind., Doug Tolle of Bremen, Ind., and Kristin Pietsch of Tampa, Fla.; nine great-grandchildren; half brother, Harold Shown of LaFollette, Tenn.; half sister, Helen Godfrey of Knoxville. SMITH, HARRY E. "POE" - age 79 of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday February 8, 2001 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. Mr. Smith was one of the most well known athletes in the area. He served in WW II as a Platoon Sgt. and received the Purple Heart. He was an avid golfer. Born August 21, 1921 in Knoxville to the late Roy Oscar and Sena Lou Warwick Smith. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. Survivors: wife, Phyllis Hill Smith; son, Harry E. Smith Jr. of Oak Ridge; daughter, Jerry L. Smith of Oak Ridge; step son, William C. Peterson and wife, Patty of Mechanicsville; step daughter, Rosalie Spencer and husband, Dale of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother, Roy E. Smith of Nashville; sisters, Ruby S. Bradshaw of Knoxville, Betty L. Barnhart of Clinton. Funeral service will be Monday February 12, at 8 p.m. at Central Baptist Church. Graveside services will be Tuesday at 12 at the Tennessee State Veterans cemetery in Knoxville. WEAVER, EVELYN M. - age 72 of Heiskell, passed away Thursday Feb. 8, 2001 at Mariner Health Care of Norris. Member of New Home Baptist Church. CARTER, JOHN - age 83 of Rutledge passed at his home after a lingering illness surrounded by his family February 10, 2001. He was a member of Mitchell Springs Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Lucy of 62 years; daughters, Louanna Webb of Morristown, Betty Clifton and Carolyn Beeler of Rutledge and Jodie Carter of Louisiana; 5 grandsons; 4 granddaughters; and 4 great granddaughters. Funeral services for Mr. Carter will be held at 11 a.m. Monday February 12, 2001 at Mitchell Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Lamb, Rev. Al Smith and Rev. Ted Phillips officiating. CATON, B. D., JR. - age 84 of Newport, died suddenly Friday morning at his home. He was a charter member of the English Mountain Christian Church, and was an elder and chairman of the board. He was a retired employee of Stokely Van Camp where he held the positions of Chemist, Plant manager and District Manager with 40 years of service. He was a 1941 graduate of ETSU. He was preceded in death by parents, Benjamin D. and Bernice Easterly Caton; brother, James G. Caton and sisters, Sara C. Swann of Dandridge and Pauline C. Cline of N. Andover, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Edna Mason Caton of Newport; son, Dr. Benjaminn D. Caton, III, ETSU professor of music of Johnson City, Tenn.; sister, Dr. Irma J. Caton of Denton, TX; also brothers in law; sisters in law; nieces; nephews; and cousins. Funeral service will be Monday 4:30 p.m. at the English Mountain Christian Church with Rick Carr officiating. COHAN, RUBY - age of Knoxville, passed away Saturday evening at Hillcrest North. She was a member of Fountain City Presbyterian Church and a retired Registered Nurse. Preceded in death by husband, Michael J. Cohan and granddaughter, Anita Sharp. Survivors: daughter, Kathy Cohan; son & daughter in law, Michael & Judy Cohan; daughter & son in law, Toni & Bill Rhegness of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Megan Cohan and Ryan Boyd and their mother, Debbie Cohan; sister & brother in law, Jimmie Lou & Gene Witt of Bristol, Tenn. Memorial service 2:30 p.m. Sunday Fountain City Presbyterian Church. Rev. Tom Ballard officiating.
