POWERS, HERBERT LAWRENCE (LARRY) - age 63, of West Palm Beach, Florida, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 10, 2001, after battling with diabetes for 15 years. God said, "My child has suffered enough," and took him home. Larry had a heart of gold, dearly loving his wife, children and grandchildren. Born and raised in Knoxville, he moved to Florida in 1969, to further his newly opened commercial insulation business. Committing his life to the Lord at age 40, he was passionate about studying the Bible and telling others about the joy Jesus placed in his life. In the last two years of his life, diabetes took his eyesight and ability to walk, but he took pride in the presence and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all. Survivors: wife, Doris Stringfield Powers; daughters and son-in-laws, Lauren and Stan Smelt of Loxahatchee, and Lana and Jimmy Holbrook of Knoxville; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Shelly of Royal Palm Beach, and Jason and Rebekah of Knoxville; grandchildren, Tabitha, Matthew, Rachel, Jonathan, Abigail, Lucas and Mark Smelt, Clay, Danae, and Cody Powers, Brandon, Drew, and Hannah Holbrook; mother, Lula Powers; brother, Ben Powers, and sister, Jamie Haworth. Funeral Service 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lynnhurst Greenwood Chapel with Rev. Walter Crouch officiating. Interment icon to follow in Lynnhurst cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is requested, a contribution be made to the Building Fund of 1st Baptist Church of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., 10701 Okeechobee Blvd., Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411. SARGENT, CATHERN LOUISA ROGERS - age 78, of Knoxville, formerly of Provo, Utah, died Monday, February 12, 2001, at home. She is survived by brothers, Willard and Abe Rogers, sister, Ardella Fields; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Todd Hansen of West Jordan, Utah; daughter, Linda Sargent Nitzberg of Knoxville; grandchildren, Jason Nitzberg, Michael Hansen, Cathern Hansen, Destinee Nitzberg, Kristina Hansen, Harmon Hansen, Jodi and Donald Seegmiller and Carey Hansen; great-grandchildren, Melayna, Leandra and Alyssa Seegmiller, many nieces and nephews, and many friends, all of whom were very special to her. A special thanks to all the doctors, nurses, and medical personnel that showed that special care and compassion. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001, at Eastview Memorial Gardens, Duane Topinka and Jeremy Baseman officiating.

SCOTT, MILDRED MELVINE - age 69, left this earthly life Sunday, February 11, 2001. Mildred Scott, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, was a devoted wife and mother. She dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren. After a long struggle with diabetes and other health problems, she was released from this world and reunited with her mother, father, sisters, and her youngest son, Cole. Millie is survived by her daughters, Kim, Jo, Pam, and Marliss; her sons, Thomas III, David and Richard; 13 grandchildren, Nathaniel, Matt, Brenna, Allison, Zach, and Nick Pierson, Nikki Scott, Christopher and Forrest Scott, Shyler, Nino, Beatnik and Connie Scott. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, contributions be made to the American Diabetes Foundation. Papich-Kuba Funeral Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in charge of arrangements.

SHADDEN, ROBERT PORTER - age 77, of Tellico Plains, Tenn., passed away Monday, February 12, 2001, at Woods Memorial Hospital. Preceded in death by parents, Floyd and Sallie Shadden; brother, Homer Shadden; sister, Maude Gay. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, and Brown Hill Masonic Lodge #613. He was Monroe County Commissioner for 23 years. He was a retired farmer. Survivors: wife, Mary Shadden of Tellico Plains; sons, Douglas Shadden and Mike Shadden, both of Tellico Plains; beloved grandson, Andy Shadden of Tellico Plains; former daughter-in-law, Debbie Martin of Tellico Plains; sisters, Mattie Mae Cagle of Tellico Plains and Dora Emma Shadden of Madisonville; brother and sister-in-law, George and Doris Shadden of Maryville; five nieces and three nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral Services 8 p.m. Wednesday in Myers Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Jim Millsaps and Andy Shadden officiating. SMITH, MAE E. (JACKIE) - age 78, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Madisonville and attended Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her husband, Jack Smith; parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Wayman; sister, Eva Wayman, and brother, Leon Wayman. Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Jackie L. and Cindy Montgomery; grandchildren, Brandy and Jackie, Jr.; sisters, Sue Smith of Clinton, Virginia Hendricks of Alcoa, Bertha Choate of Madisonville, Johnnie Bryant, June Plemmons, Nancy Maxey, and Judy Wayman, all of Knoxville; brother, Bobby Wayman of Alabama. Funeral service 3 p.m. Thursday, Berry Chapel, Dr. Tony Crisp officiating. Interment icon to follow at Greenwood cemetery. Pallbearers: A.K. STOTT, OTIS SIDNEY - age 78, of Pigeon Forge, died Tuesday, February 13, 2001. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Sevierville and was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Hannah Stott; son, Alan Stott; four sisters and one brother. Survivors: Beloved wife of 57 years, Mildred Terry Stott; children, Ray Stott, Grace and Bill James, Brenda and Bill Edds, Linda and David Sutton, Flora and Glenn Shinn, and Terry and Pat Stott; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; twin brother, Olin Stott; special friends, Mark, Janet and Christopher Whaley. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday with funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, Reverend Curtis Wells and Reverend Bill Maples officiating. WILLIAMS, WAYLAND RAY - age 68, of Knoxville, passed away 5:23 p.m. Sunday, February 11, 2001, at Baptist Hospital. He was a member of West Hills Baptist Church, and retired from Chevron U.S.A., after 37 years of service. A 32nd degree Mason and a Veteran of the Korean War. Preceded in death by son, Timothy Ray Williams. Survivors: wife, Shirley Williams; son, Greg Williams; grandsons, Craig Allen Williams and Scott Aaron Williams, all of Knoxville; sisters, Bernice Hunt of Virginia and Ruby Varney of Ohio; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Williams is at Highland Memorial Funeral Home, 5315 Kingston Pike, where the family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Wednesday. Graveside Service 11 a.m. Thursday, Highland Memorial Mausoleum. WILSON, VIRGINIA U. - age 83, of Rogersville, died Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at Church Hill Health Care & Rehab Center, after a brief illness. She was a member of Rogersville Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lura Smith Umbarger, Sr., and brother, James Umbargar, Jr. Survivors include her husband, Gray A. Wilson of the home and sister-in-law, Fae Umbargar of Knoxville. Calling hours will be 1-2 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001, at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville, Tenn. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001, in the funeral home chapel with Dr. David L. Hale officiating. Burial will follow in McKinney cemetery.

WITT, MR. O.B. - age 76, of Hubbs Grove Road, Maynardville, passed away 1:02 a.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at his home. He was of the Baptist faith and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, serving 1942-1946. He was a retired employee of Deublin Co., Northbrook, Illinois. Preceded in death by father, Russell E. Witt; mother, Pearlie Witt; brother, Brady Witt; sister, Georgia Cheek; son, Tommy Dale Witt; great-grandson, William Justin Barnett. Mr. Witt is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sarah Modean Witt of Maynardville; step-mother, Fairie Witt of Pineville, Kentucky; children, Amber Elaine and Hoyl Byrd, David S. and Arlette Witt, all of Maynardville, Russell E. and Joyce Witt of Round Lake, Ill., and Robin Witt, the wife of the late Tommy Dale Witt of Maynardville; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Sylvia Witt of Franklin, Ohio; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bessie Henderson and Gladys Epperson of Tazewell, Maxine Broughton of Chicago, Ill., Margaret and Charles Emory of Pineville, Ky., Francis and Rudith Redmon of Chenoa, Ky., Rosie Aldridge of Pineville, Ky.; brother-in-law, Robert Boyd and Doris Evans of Maynardville; sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Wiseman of Manassas, Va.; special son-in-law, Roy Browning of Maynardville; special cousin, H.C. and Pat Gibson of Deer Lodge, Tenn.
