LUTNER, HUGH "HOTSHOT" - age 87, of Lake City, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at his residence. He was born October 2, 1913, in Anderson Co., Tenn. Hugh was a member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired Coal Miner and retired from Clinton Home Center. He loved to hunt, fish, watch wrestling and talk on his C.B. Radio. Hugh was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clint and Mary Inas Brummett Lutner; wife, Verdie Reynolds Lutner; sisters, Naomie Mitts and Flora Sparks; brothers, Frank Lutner and Robert Mitts. Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Hugh E. and Maxine Lutner of Lake City; daughter, Betty Lutner of Lake City; sister, Flossie Brown of Lake City; grandsons, Lee Lutner and wife Myra and Michael Lutner and wife Teresa; granddaughter, Ann Lutner Warwick and husband Jackie; great-grandchildren, Cody Lutner, Marissa Lutner, Emily Lutner, and Jessica Palland; several nieces, nephews, and many friends. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001, at the Cox-Martin Funeral Home. MASON, REV. ESTEL (JACK) - age 77, of South Knoxville, passed away Monday, February 12, 2001, at Baptist Hospital. He was a member of the local teamsters. A Veteran of World War II. Preceded in death by father, Fred B. Mason; mother, Ruby D. Mason; brother, Walter Lynn Mason. Survivors: wife, Joyce E. Mason; daughter, Judy Ann Wallace; son, Jerry L. Mason; step-sons, Jerry L. Moore, Charles Moore, and Don P. Moore; five grandsons; one granddaughter (Cherie'); two great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank Mason, Bill Mason and Gary Wayne Mason; sisters, Betty Jo McCurry and Caroline Long. Funeral service 1 p.m. Thursday, Berry Chapel, Rev. Doyle Wolfenbarger and Rev. Jim Kitts officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland South cemetery with Rev. McMAHAN, AGNES VASEY - age 93, of Knoxville, passed away at Holston Heath Care Center Monday, February 12, 2001. She was a member of Broadway Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Jane Ann Vasey; husband, Ben H. McMahan, and eight brothers and sisters. Mrs. McMahan is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Betty M. and Bill Hood of Knoxville, Nancy M. and Uriel Jones of Illinois, and Shirley M. Wells of Knoxville; eight grandchildren, Mark J. Hood, Lisa Hood Skinner and her husband Steve, Scott Hood and his wife Karen, Mitch Jones and his wife Sheila, Keith Jones and his wife Shelly, Kelly Frankel, Kurt Wells, and Grant Wells and his wife Karla; seven great-grandchildren, Noelle, Molly and Andrew Hood, Jamie and Ben Jones, Kimberly Ann Frankel, and Ashley Wells. Funeral service 7 p.m. Thursday, Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel with Rev. Mike Bundren officiating. Family will leave Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel, 9:30 a.m. Friday for private family interment icon at 10 a.m. in Lynnhurst cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family wishes to express their thanks to the nurses and caregivers of Holston Health Care Center for their loving care of Agnes during her illness. MYNATT, ELAINE S. - age 53, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, February 13, 2001. She attended West Lake Church. She is a graduate of Carson-Newman College, and currently Chairperson of the Carson-Newman Sesquicentennial Publication Committee. She had written and published four books, and earlier taught in middle and high school in Louisiana and Knox County. Survivors: husband, Fred Richard Mynatt; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jacquline Baugh; daughter, Suzanne Baugh; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Mynatt and Blair McIntyre; grandson, Parker Fredrick Baugh; mother, Faye Estes; sisters, Elle Jacobs and Susan Simpson; brother, Randy Simpson. Funeral service will be Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Rev. Rick Campbell officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to West Lake Church, 9635 Westland Drive, Knoxville, TN 37922. OWENS, CORA LEE - age 91, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2001. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, and an Honorary Trustee of Foster Care Service. She worked at the Republican Committee of Halls. Preceded in death by husband, Rev. Red C. Owens; daughter, Ann Higham. Survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Mary Owens of Annapolis, Md., Johnny and Linda Owens, and George and Kathy Owens, all of Tampa, Fla., R.C. and June Owens and Danny Ray Owens, all of Halls; daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Hubert Minton of Annapolis, Md.; 26 grandchildren, and a host of great and great-great grandchildren. Funeral service 8 p.m. Friday, Mynatt's Chapel, Rev. Tommy Muncey officiating. Family and friends will meet at Greenwood cemetery, 11 a.m. Saturday for interment. ROBINSON, DR. ROBERT S. - of Mascot, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Born August 31, 1930. Dr. Robinson received his BS degree from UT-Knoxville, and attended pharmacy school in Memphis. Owner of the Robinson Drug Store for 28 years, and member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church. Staff Sergeant in the US Marine Corp., who served during the Korean War and Viet Nam Conflict. Preceded in death by father, THP Bob Robinson and mother, Alta Mae (Brewer)-(Greer) Robinson Matthews; son, Robert S. Robinson II; brothers, William (Bill) Jacob Robinson and Rhodes Wesley Robinson. Survivors include wife, Joyce Odom Robinson; daughters, Ann Metler and Joy Shuler and husband Mark; children, Robert (Robi) S. Robinson III and wife Sammy Kay, Katrina Beaman and husband Hank, and William Dale Robinson; grandchildren, Robie S. Robinson IV, Lisa Robinson, Teresia R. Mullins, Casey Beaman, Jenny M. Beaman, Brittany Robinson, Joshua Metler, Jacob Metler, Cindel A. Shuler, Lucas S. Shuler, Ariel N. Shuler, and Ethan A. SARGENT, CATHERN LOUISA ROGERS - age 78, of Knoxville, formerly of Provo, Utah, died Monday, February 12, 2001, at home. She is survived by brothers, Willard and Abe Rogers, sister, Ardella Fields; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Todd Hansen of West Jordan, Utah; daughter, Linda Sargent Nitzberg of Knoxville; grandchildren, Jason Nitzberg, Michael Hansen, Cathern Hansen, Destinee Nitzberg, Kristina Hansen, Harmon Hansen, Jodi and Donald Seegmiller and Carey Hansen; great-grandchildren, Melayna, Leandra and Alyssa Seegmiller, many nieces and nephews, and many friends, all of whom were very special to her. A special thanks to all the doctors, nurses, and medical personnel that showed that special care and compassion. STOTT, JOSEPH EDWARD - age 80 of Knoxville died 11:20 a.m. Tuesday February 13, 2001 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City, Tenn. He was born in Burlington and grew up there. He was of the Methodist faith, he was an Air Force veteran of World War II serving 3 years in the European Theater. Retired from the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Preceded in death by parents, Thomas and Della Lusby Stott; sisters, Cleo Stott, Edith Stott and Georgia Lee Mellon; brother, William Stott. Survivors; brother and sister in law, Thomas and Lucy Stott and ex-wife, Margarette Perry all of Knoxville; 16 nieces and nephews. Funeral service 8 p.m. Friday at Stevens Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Keith Knight officiating. Family and friends will meet at Macedonia United Methodist Church cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Saturday for an 11 a.m. graveside service and interment. SUMMEY, BRITTANY LAUREN - age 16, of Clinton, went to see Jesus on Tuesday, February 13, 2001. She was a Sophomore at Clinton High School, where she was on the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. Preceded in death by grandmother, Isabell Summey. Born December 26, 1984, in Knox County. Survivors: parents, Darrell and Stacey Summey of Claxton; brother, Bradley Darrell Summey of Claxton; grandparents, John W. and Gladys Summey of Vonore, Tenn., and Paul and Myrtle Mortez of Claxton; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends. We will miss you deeply and will love you with all our hearts forever. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 15, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with funeral service following at 8 p.m., in the chapel with Rev. Bill Jackson and Rev. WIDING, "PAT" PATRICK - age 64, of Lake City, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Pat was a very kind and caring person. He was a carpenter for more than 50 years, and loved to work with exotic wood. He was the world record holder in canoe racing and is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records. Pat was preceded in death by a son, Mikal Widing; parents, Henry and Lilly Widing; brothers, Floren and David Widing. Survivors: wife, Sheila Widing of Lake City, Tenn.; daughters, Cathy Wilson and husband Lonnie of Fenton, Michigan, Kelly Jones and husband Butch of Barron, Michigan, Penny Shoopman and husband Delbert of Battle Creek, Michigan, Katie Widing of Bunnell, Fla., Bridget Huling and husband Doug of Groton, Conn., and Missy Jarmon of Arlington, Texas; sons, Roger Widing and wife Karen of Traverse City, Michigan, Randy Widing of Atlanta, Ga., and Patrick Widing and wife Toni of Michigan; brothers, Albert Widing and wife Dorothy of Michigan, Henry Widing and wife Gail of Michigan, and Leroy Widing and wife Kathy of Michigan; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Former owner of Grayson Pontiac dies

Dexter E. Howard, the former owner of Grayson Pontiac, died Tuesday at his home in New Bern, N.C. He was 77.

Born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles, Mr. Howard lived a long and distinguished life that included service in the Army Air Corps during World War II and a job at Paramount Studios, where he met his first wife, Jeanne. During his time in the war, Mr. Howard flew dangerous low-level bombing missions over Axis-occupied Europe.

After the war, Mr. Howard trained pilots for a short time before beginning his career in the automobile industry. After seven years at the Downtown Los Angeles Ford dealership, he moved to Greensboro, N.C., to open a Ford dealership.

Over the years, Mr. Howard owned Ford, Pontiac, AMC and BMW dealerships in Durham, N.C., and Knoxville. He sold his Knoxville Pontiac dealership to Arthur Grayson in 1978.

In addition to his automotive interests, Mr. Howard also owned the New York Yankees farm club in Greensboro.

He is survived by sons Randall Howard, Brandon Howard, Andrew Howard and Sanford Howard and daughter Candice Chapman, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and his second wife, Glenda Howard.

Funeral services will be Friday in Greensboro, N.C.

Mike Mauer dead at 47

February 15, 2001

Mike Mauer, who was one of the more respected members of the Knoxville business and golfing communities, died Wednesday morning.

Mr. Mauer, who was 47, died in Washington, D.C., on his way home after receiving cancer treatments in Bethesda, Md. He had a kidney and large tumor removed about two weeks ago, but his other kidney and liver stopped functioning on Monday.

Mr. Mauer was a licensed architect who graduated from Catholic High School and the University of Tennessee, where he also played baseball for the Vols. He was the executive vice president at Johnson & Galyon Inc., where his association with company President Jim Bush led to an active role with the Ben Hogan Tour, which later became the Nike Tour and now Buy.Com Tour. Bush was the tournament co-chairman. While serving as one of the original committee members, Mr. Mauer supervised pre-tournament events for 10 years that included a junior clinic and pro-am. He also was an avid golfer and youth baseball coach.

Mr. Mauer worked at Johnson & Galyon for 22 years and was secretary-treasurer of the Knoxville Branch of The Associated General Contractors of Tennessee Inc. He is survived by his wife, Gail, and two children.

Fred Russell, former Loudon sheriff, dies

February 19, 2001

A man who lost a bid for reelection as Loudon County sheriff only to win the office again a decade later died Saturday.

Fred Freeman Russell died at his Loudon County home. He was 84.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Russell served in World War II and later worked as a guard for the Tennessee Valley Authority.

In 1954, he was elected sheriff in Loudon County and served a four-year term. He lost his re-election bid but, in 1968, again sought and won the office. Mr. Russell spent the next six years as sheriff, leaving the post in 1974.

Mr. Russell was involved in several civic organizations, including the Tennessee Masonic Lodge 204, the Lions Club, York & Scottish Rites, Kerbela Temple, the American Legion Post 120 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5150. He also was active in the Republican party.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and recently had been attending the Loudon United Methodist Church.

His survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Jean Russell Hooker and Larry Hooker of Loudon; grandchildren, Lea Ann Bright, Renea Clemmer, Freeman Ralphard (Buddy) Russell Jr. and Donna Jo Russell Beals, all of Loudon, Regina Ann Roberts of Sweetwater and Patty Ann Hawk and Freddy Deford Russell, both of Philadelphia; 12 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today followed by a Masonic service conducted by Lodge 204. Family and friends will meet at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City and travel to the Loudon County Memorial Gardens for a 1 p.m. graveside service that will include full military honors conferred by the Loudon American Legion and VFW honor guard.

BALLARD, FRED C. - age 86, formerly of Knoxville, passed away in Asheville, NC Monday Feb. 19, 2001. He was a US Army combat veteran of WW II serving as a Staff Sergeant with General George Patton's 3rd Army in the 11th Armored Division. Survivors: son, F. Michael Ballard; daughter, Patricia Jackson, both of Black Mountain, NC; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; brother, Roy Ballard, Maryville; sister, Iris Moen, Satellite Beach, Fla. Graveside services will be conducted 12 noon Thursday at Lynnhurst cemetery with military honors provided by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Thursday at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 2300 W. Adair Dr.

BOUCHARD, LILLIAN DAILEY - of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, went to be with her late husband, William Owen Bouchard, Saturday, February 17, 2001. Survivors include sons; Bill and Teresa Bouchard, Scott and Jeri Bouchard, Curt and Terri Bouchard, and Tommy Bouchard; niece, Scharamaine and Jay Linginfelter; special friends, Bill and Michelle Dunn, Liz Jett, and Phyliss Raulston; many cousins and relatives. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Concord Masonic cemetery with John H. Linginfelter III officiating. Arrangements by Cremation Options Inc. (865) 693-2273.
