HORNE, ALVIN TEASLEY - age 86, died Friday, Feb. 22, at Baptist Hospital from complications following heart surgery. Alvin lived a life that was both ordinary and extraordinary. He grew up in a Mississippi farming family who survived the depression as traveling farm laborers. He served his country during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge and other campaigns. Following the war he made his living in sales. With his wife, Grace he raised their three children in the Bluegrass community. Alvin was extraordinary, however, in the way he lived his life. He learned from the difficulties in his life. He forgave himself and others, accepted himself and others, and loved unconditionally. In his older years, when faced with the death of his wife and other loved ones, he chose again and again to open his mind and heart to life and other people. He delivered Mobil Meals everyday in the last few years of his life. He visited the library daily, checking out music of all kinds and reading everything from cookbooks to westerns to medicine and spirituality. He tried new recipes, thought new thoughts, and opened himself to loving and growing in every way. Alvin is preceded in death by his wife, Grace, his sister, Winnie, and his brother Carey. He is survived by his brother, Ferrill; his sister in law, Mabel; his children, and many extended family members. He greatly valued his time with all family members and was always available with a helping hand or wonderful advice and counsel to his children and friends. His love has blessed us. Daughter, Margaret (Horne) and John Lindop, grandchildren, Vicki and Chris Seon, Valerie and Frank Howlett (and great grandchild, Olivia), Wendy and Dean Jensen ( and great grandchildren, Carter and Kalli); son, Doug and Brenda Horne; grandchildren, Susan Horne, Brook and Jacqueline Horne and great grandchildren, Gracie and Baylor; daughter, Rosemary (Horne) and Jack Sims; grandchildren, Tom and Diane Sims, Bryce Sims. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. Sunday Feb. 25, at Erin Presbyterian Church with service and burial following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity Alvin Horne served faithfully: Mobile Meals, P.O. Box 51650, Knoxville, Tenn. 37950 or to a fund for families in need while their children are hospitalized: Gracie and Baylor Horne Faith Fund, Children's Hospital P.O. Box 15010, Knoxville, Tenn. 37901-5010.
