WALLACE, MICHAEL - age 50, passed away on Monday night, April 9, 2001, at the Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville. He was born on December 7, 1950, and is the son of Joe Jackson Wallace and Mildred Louise Wallace. He is preceded in death by his father, Joe Wallace. Michael is survived by his mother, Mildred Louise Wallace, and wife, Barbara Wallace; two daughters, Carrie Wiley and her husband Doug, and Heather Wallace, all of Knoxville; two sons, Shane Wallace and Michael Wallace, Jr., all of Knoxville; mother and father-in-law, Evelyn and Joe "Buck" Lamb; two brothers, Richard Wallace and his wife Cathy of Atlanta, and Jim Wallace, also of Atlanta; one sister, Janice Wallace of Atlanta; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and friends of the family. Graveside service will be on Fri. at 1 p.m. at the Asbury Cemetary, Rev. Jason Darr officiating Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 12:50 p.m. Arrangements by McCarty's Mortuary from 6-8 p.m.

WELBORN, ALINE (BERGERON) - died at her home in Knoxville, led an eventful and varied life originating with her birth in Manchester, New Hampshire and her upbringing in Sanford, Maine. College years were spent in Arizona and after a period of high school teaching, at the University of Texas at Austin where she did graduate study in Library Science. In Austin, she met her future husband, David M. Welborn. They were married in Washington, DC in 1959. Subsequently, in various university cities in Indiana, Texas, Illinois, Kansas, and since 1973, in Knoxville, she fulfilled her obligations as daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend with loving care, understanding, style, grace and strength, despite many yeas of impaired health. Possessor of a keen and independent mind, over the years she maintained lively interest in literature, the performing arts, politics and religion. Of the Roman Catholic faith, she was a stout and engaged defender of traditional doctrine and liturgy in the face of revisions imposed in the Church over the last four decades. The cultures of Brittany, French Canadian, and the New England congregations of immigrants from Quebec from which she came shaped her perspective of life in basic ways. Her parents, Marie Louise Langlois Bergeron and Joseph O. Bergeron; aunt and uncle Juliette Langlois Desjardins and Dr. Louis P. Desjardins; second parents, were instrumental in safeguarding this cultural heritage and guiding her into maturity with sure hands. Survivors are husband, Dr. David M. Welborn of Knoxville; daughter and son in law, Amelie Welborn and Michael Dubruiel of Fort Wayne, Indiana; grandchildren, Christopher Vining, Knoxville, David and Catherine Vining and Joseph Bernard Dubruiel, Fort Wayne, Ind.; brother and sister in law, J. Paul and Virginia Bergeron, Brunswick, Maine; sister in law and brother in law, Karen and William Allen, Clovis, New Mexico; nieces, Janine Talbot, Fort Collins, Colo., Suzanne Bergeron, Brunswick, Maine, Vivian Noble, Amarillo, Texas. A funeral mass was said in Knoxville. Interment icon will be in Sanford, Maine. Arrangements by Gentry-Griffey Chapel.

WHITFIELD, CHAPPELL - age 18, of Knoxville, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 10, 2001. A senior at West High School and an Episcopalian, Chappell was very loving, easy going and loved the outdoors. He loved music, played the flute and wrote poetry. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John C. Whitfield. His survivors include his parents, Tina LoBiondo and John C. Whitfield, Jr.; brother, John C. Whitfield, III; grandmother, Joyce C. Whitfield, all of Knoxville; grandparents, Thomas F. and Wanda A. LoBiondo of Lancaster, Ky.; maternal great-grandmother, Effie H. Allen of Appalachia, Va.; aunts and uncles, R. J. Whitfield of Ft. Myers, Fla., Emily and Sterling Webb of Knoxville, Thomas and Patty LoBiondo, and Allen and Vicki LoBiondo, all of Lexington, Ky., and Regina LoBiondo of Knoxville; cousins, Stockton Webb, David, Anthony, Phillip, and Jonathan LoBiondo, Melissa Mondella, James D., John M. and Timothy Black, and Gloria Ross. A memorial service will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at Church of the Good Samaritan, 425 N. Cedar Bluff Rd. with the Rev. Joseph T. Boulet officiating. The family will receive friends 3-4 p.m. Friday, at the church. WOODS, HELEN HARMON - age 80 of Halls, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital. Member of Union Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Richard Woods; parents, Pearl & Elbert Harmon; brother, Carl Harmon. Survived by grandsons, Mike Mathews, Scott Mathews and wife, Gayle; great grandchildren, Gwen, Shon, Amanda and Mitchell Mathews; sister, Leola Preston; special friend, Regina Reed. BERRY, MARIE B. - age 73 of Alcoa, passed away Friday morning April 20, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Preceded in death by husband, Charles Hubert Berry. BORDEN, OMA R. - age 83 passed away on Thursday April 19, 2001 at the NHC Nursing Home. She was born on September 13, 1917 and is the daughter of the late Gordon and Loda Randolph. Also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Borden; brothers, Ed and R.T. Randolph; sisters, Alma, Ruby and Ethel; niece, Bobbie. Oma was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by brother, Jack Randolph from Knoxville; sister, Lillian Nelson from Jacksboro, Tenn. also devoted nieces, Linda and Pat; nephew, Bill Edmond; and several nieces and nephews and friends of the family. Graveside services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Jacksboro cemetery, Rev. Wayne Peace will be officiating. BOWEN, EDWARD, JR. (SKIPPER) - age 44 of Knoxville, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2001. He attended Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. Preceded in death by father, Edward Bowen, Sr.; aunt, Willie Mae Brannon; grandmother, Loraine Warren; and uncle, Willie Judson. Survived by mother, Betty Bowen; sons, Jairon Sr. (Angela) Bowen and Ashaundae Fair; daughter LaTesha Davis; grandchildren, Jairon Jr. and Brandon Bowen, LaDaries, Jayla and LaMaja Davis; sisters, Kim (Derrick) Ellis and Kendall (Willie) Holland; nephews, Willie and Zion Holland all of Knoxville; aunts, Gladys Bowen of Knoxville, Christine Judson of Detroit, Mary (Freddie) Mitchell of Atlanta, and Brenda Thomas of Knoxville; uncles, Robert (Florence)Warren of Detroit and Julius Brannon of Knoxville; special friend, Kathy Henderson; a host of other family and friends. BROWN, ROSA LEE - age 97, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Little Creek Sanitarium. She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by husband, Edwin Coleman Brown. Survivors: sons, Eddie, Jerry, Donald, and Gary; daughters, Fay and Gay; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Lylah Boruff and Pauline Thacker. Family and friends will meet Saturday at Edgewood cemetery for a 10 a.m. graveside and interment icon service. BURKE, MARY HELEN TIPTON - Chattanooga, passed away Thursday April 19, 2001 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Vonore, Tenn. and lived most of her life in Knoxville, moving to Chattanooga in 1984. She worked as a sales associate for Miller Brothers for 17 years. Her late husband of 51 years, William Norman Burke was retired from the Scripps-Howard organization and was the Advertising Director of the Knoxville News Sentinel. She was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and Mrs. Snyder's Sunday School Class. She was known to family and friends as Mimi. She is the daughter of the late Robert Samuel and Edith D. Tipton of Vonore, Tenn. Her brother, James Edward Tipton died in 1983. She is survived by her sister, Sylvia Ammons of Knoxville; and two brothers, Paul Tipton of Knoxville and Darrel Tipton of Hobart, Ind.; and her sister in law, Marlene S. Tipton of Lake Station, Ind.; her daughter, Deborah Byrd and her husband, Mitchell A. Byrd and two grandsons, L/Cpl. Sam Byrd, USMC, and Doug Byrd, a senior at Berean Academy are residents of Signal Mountain. Visitation will be Sunday 2-3:30 p.m. the funeral service will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Lane-Coulter Chapel with Bill Harvey officiating. A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Chattanooga National cemetery. BURRELL, J. B. CLIFFORD JR. - passed away in Tucson, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Renee Burrell; two children, Lisa Burrell, J. B. Burrell, II; mother, Wanda Young; brother, Michael Burrell; and three sisters, Pam Hurst, Diane Dillard and Robin Owens. He has gone to meet his brother, Randy Burrell in Heaven.

BYRD, CARLOS WARREN (C.W.) - age 64 of Sevierville, died Thursday April 19, 2001 at Sevier Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Huff Byrd; brother, Robert Earl Byrd and sister, Charlene Byrd. Survivors: daughters, Gail Breeden, Carla Robb; grandchildren, Ashley Breeden, Blake Huskey, Hannah Sims; fiancé, Johnnie Ownby; mother in law, Mrs. Edgar Huff; brothers, Rudolph Byrd, Maryl Byrd; sisters, Gladys Thomas, Hazel Ruth Briggs; several friends and co workers. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Ball and Rev. Bill Helton officiating. Interment icon to follow in Mountain View cemetery. CAGLE, MRS. ARTIE LEE JOLLEY - age 94 of Spring City Health Care, formerly of cemetery Road, passed away Thursday in Rhea County Medical Center, Dayton. She was retired employee of Southern Silk Mills, member of the Central Baptist Church, Spring City, where she taught a Sunday School Class for many years. Preceded in death by parents, Perry & Angie Jolley; daughter, Wanda Lee Cunningham; son, Alfred (Al) Cagle; 4 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild & is survived by son, James E. Cagle & Wife, Joyce; daughters, Wilma Jean Allen, Margie Cunningham & husband, George, all of Spring City; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; son in law, Robert Cunningham, Spring City; daughter in law, Jan Cagle, Lorraine, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Central Baptist Church Spring City, with Rev. Charles Campbell & Bro. Jake Fisher officiating. She was an employee of the University of Tennessee for 25 years and a member of Highland View Baptist Church. Preceded in death by father, Clarence Carr, Sr. and a brother, Lloyd Carr. Carr; granddaughter, Tracy Reynolds; mother, Elva White Carr; brothers, Clarence, Jr., Milan and David Carr; sisters, Mary Tilley and Ila Mae Mahan; several nieces and nephews. COFFEY, MRS. DALE - age 63, of Kodak, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a charter member of Cumberland Baptist Church, and a charter member, board member, and medical adviser for the Lupus Foundation of America Inc., East Tennessee Chapter. Mrs. Coffey was preceded in death by her father, H.F. Grovenstein, and one son, David Coffey. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Rosa Lee Grovenstein of Knoxville; her husband, Mr. Richard Coffey of Kodak; one son, Larry Coffey, and wife Najeeba of Kodak; one daughter, Joy Halbrook, and special friend Larry Alexander of Knoxville; two grandchildren, Emily Halbrook and John Coffey; one brother, Eddie Grovenstein of Knoxville; one sister, Terri Hix of Riverside, Calif. The family will receive friends on Sunday at the Cumberland Baptist Church, 5600 Western Ave., from 1-3 p.m. with service at 3 p.m. The Rev. Jeff Lane will officiate. COFFMAN, EVA GRACE - precious loving mother and grandmother age 85 passed away at her home on Thursday morning April 19, 2001. She was a member of Emory Valley Baptist Church. Eva was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Lula Majors; sisters, Avis, Iris, Elva; brothers, John and Willis; and grandson, James. She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Maynard; children, Fern Young Leford (Claudette), Margaret Brooks (John), Donnie (Vontella), Alvis (Connie), and Johnny (Mary); thirteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
