MARTIN, EDNA FRANKLIN - age 96, of the Piedmont Community, New Market, Tenn., passed away Saturday evening, April 21, 2001, at the Jefferson County Nursing Home, following an extended illness. She was an active member and former Sunday School Teacher of the Piedmont Baptist Church. Edna was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, and was a retired school teacher of the Jefferson County School System. Preceded in death by her husband, Claude Martin; parents, John and Hattie Evelyn (French) Franklin; brothers, Lefford, Bruce, and Ralph Franklin; sister, Trula Hobby. She is survived by brother-in-law, Earl Martin of New Market and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services Monday 7 p.m. at the Piedmont Baptist Church with Rev. James Kinser and Dr. Clyde Tilley officiating. Interment icon graveside services Tuesday 10 a.m. at Piedmont cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate, for memorial gifts to be made to the Piedmont cemetery Fund, c/o Jack White, 887 W. Dumplin Valley Rd., Dandridge, TN 37725. Family and friends may call at the church between the hours of 5-7 p.m., prior to the funeral service. Arrangements by Farrar Funeral Home, Dandridge.

McDONALD, DAVID MICHAEL, Ph.D. - 47, transitioned into wholeness on Tuesday April 17 at Vanderbilt Medical Center surrounded by the light and love of family and friends. He was a professor at Lincoln Memorial University, known as a man of kindness and humor. His wife, Dr. Janet Taylor; daughter, Karen McDonald; step children, Noah & Shinara Taylor are holding a service in his memory at Miller's Chapel United Methodist Church in Maynardville, Tenn. on Saturday April 28th from 4-6 p.m. All whose lives were positively touched by David are invited to attend.

MILLS, CHARLES - age 84 of Blaine went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 2:35 p.m. at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. He was a member of Indian Ridge Baptist Church and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. Preceded in death by son, Marshall Edward Mills and 2 grandchildren. Survivors include wife of 64 years, Katherine Jarnigan Mills; children, Joyce and Bob McHaffie of Jefferson City, David and Helen Mills of Blaine, Mary and Herbert Cox of Jefferson City, Charles A. and Bonnie Mills of Rutledge, Nadine and Frank McKee of Lenoir City, Martha and John Cureton of Jefferson City, Eula V. and Melvin Brown of Rutledge, Freddie and Dawn Mills of Blaine, Gladys and Pete Sexton of Blaine, several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, Eula Martin and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday April 23, 2001 at 8 p.m. in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Fred R. Chandler and Rev. David Collins officiating. The family will meet at Indian Ridge cemetery Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. for the graveside service. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. prior to service. Arrangements made by Smith Funeral Home in Rutledge.

MULLINS, STELLA MAE - age 88, was called home to Heaven on Saturday, April 21, 2001. She was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Toney Mullins; daughter, Vandalee Williams, parents, Rev. Enos and Orlena Jarnigan Shockley; sisters, Bobbie Hurley and Allie Chase, and three great-grandchildren. Survivors: son, Ben Mullins of Sneedville; daughter, Evelyn McGhee of Church Hill; son-in-law, Kenneth Williams of Old Hickory, Tenn.; four grandsons, Ben Mullins, Jr. of Sneedville, Ernest Mullins of Washington, D.C., Tony and Curt Rodriguez of Church Hill; six granddaughters, Sandra Collins of Rogersville, Aletha Gale of Burlington, Iowa, Becky Hepler of Knoxville, Carolyn Ferguson of Sneedville, Shelby Johnson of Thorn Hill, and Cindy McGormac of Huntsville, Alabama; brother and sister-in-law, Ulous and Edna Shockley of Whitesburg; sister, Martha Singleton of Russellville; 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews, and cousins; two step granddaughters, Tonya Lindsay of Kingsport, and Tasha McGhee of Kingsport. Also CNA's, nurses and aides at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Rogersville. Funeral services 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Chinquepin Baptist Church, Rev. Kyle Gregory, Jr. officiating. Interment icon in the Carpenter cemetery, Sneedville, Tenn. Pallbearers will be family members. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m., Monday, April 23, 2001, at the McNeil Funeral Home, in Sneedville.

PHIPPS, GLENDA KIRBY - age 61, of Cartersville, Georgia, formerly of Maryville, Tennessee, passed away Saturday morning, April 21, 2001, at the family home. Preceded in death by son, Mike Phipps; parents, Charles and Mildred White Kirby; brothers, Kenneth Kirby, Billy Gerald Kirby and Stanley Kirby. Survivors: husband, Hugh M. Phipps of Cartersville, Georgia; daughter, Robin Gibson of Newman, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Stacey Phipps of Sharpsburg, Georgia; grandchildren, Melanie Phipps, Billy Gibson, Josh Phipps and Hannah Phillips. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. Raymond Burnett officiating. Interment icon to follow at Clark's' Grove cemetery. ROBERTS, WILLIAM RAY - age 48 of Lenoir City passed away Saturday April 21, 2001. Ray attended Fellowship Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mildred Stinnett Roberts; brother, Roy Roberts, Survivors: daughter and son in law, Kristi and Wayne Thomas of Lenoir City; grandchildren, Cody and Kenslee; sisters, Pat Aikens of Lebanon, Jo Ann Hicks of Watertown, Cathy Everett, Evelyn Craig and Susan Cobb all of Lenoir City; several nieces and nephews; uncle, Dee Stinnett; aunt, Faye Guider. RUTH, WILLIAM C. (BILL) - passed away suddenly Saturday morning, April 21, 2001. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of West Park Baptist Church. Bill was the owner of Quality Dental Lab. He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara I. Ruth and father, Herman Jesse Ruth. Survivors; mother, Irene Ruth; son and daughter in law, Chuck and Jean Ruth, all of Knoxville; daughter and son in law, Steve and Teresa King of Powell; grandchildren, Tyler and Ryan King; brothers and sisters in law, Jack and Jane Ruth of Loudon, Tenn. and Robert and Wanda Ruth of Knoxville; brother James Ruth of Rockledge, Fla.; many nieces and nephews and his very special friend, Dot Sloan. SCOTT, MARLENE JETT RAY - age 65 of Ten Mile, Tenn. died Friday, April 20, 2001 in Charleston, SC. Services will be held at 11 a.m. graveside at Greenwood cemetery, 3500 Tazewell Pike on Monday, April 23, 2001. Chaplin Ann Sprouse officiating. Family and friends will meet at Greenwood cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Monday. Born in Knoxville, Tenn., Marlene was the daughter of the late Dorothy Smith and Guy Rollings Jett. She was the Chief Executive Officer of Knoxville Blue Print & Supply Company. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee. Marlene was a strong and wonderful mother, sister and friend. She was an avid liberal Democrat who lived the courage of her convictions by supporting civil rights, women's rights, historical preservation and women's education. Her passions were genealogy and gardening. She left a trail of flowers and trees wherever she passed. The mountains were a source of her strength and character. Her southern heritage grew deeper as she searched for and found the generations of family who came before her. She will be remembered with love as a brave and beautiful flower of the field. Survivors include: daughters and sons in law, Michelle Ray and Michael D. Shain of Greenville, SC, Whitney Scott and Jeremy H. Biggs of Knoxville, Tenn.; sons and daughters in law, R. Michael Ray and Pamela Bunch of Heiskell, Tenn., Guy R. and Mindy Hall Ray of Ten Mile, Tenn.; grandchildren, Katherine, Lee and Dorothy Shain, Tristan Michael Ray and soon to be born baby Biggs; sister, Judith Jett of Charleston, SC; nephews and their wives, Joshua B. and Elizabeth Whitworth of Charleston, SC, I. Jett and Kelly Whitworth of Los Angeles, Calif.; dear loved ones, Lori and Brian Puett of Ten Mile, Tenn. SPANGLER, MARTHA JANE HOUSER - age 95, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2001, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. She was a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Mrs. Spangler was one of fourteen children of Charles F. and Fannie Murphy Houser. She was preceded in death by husband, Sanford Lester Spangler, Sr. Survivors: children, Helen Ruth Sands of Columbia, S.C., Rev. S. L. Spangler, Jr. of Seymour, Elizabeth Jane White of Knoxville, Charlsie Ann Wenzinger of Pacific City, Oreg., Marvin Wayne Spangler of Valrico, Fla., Phyllis Rose Ogle of Canton, Ga., Martha Christine Krosnes of Germantown, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brothers, Merl Houser of Knoxville and Joe Houser of Maryville; sisters, Ruth Houser of Knoxville and Mary Paar of Houston, Texas, and many nieces and nephews. WATSON, KIRBY LEE - of Fountain City, passed away April 20, 2001. Member of First Baptist Church of Fountain City. Preceded in death by husband, John E. Watson; parents, Corum Stooksbury and Charlotte Stooksbury Hutson; brother, William Claude Stooksbury; sister, Ruby Hutson; step father, Sam Hutson. Survived by sons and daughters in law, Gene & Darlene Watson of Rebobah, Del., Bob & Joan Watson of Jacksonville, NC, Bill & Shirley Watson, Gary & Debby Watson, all of Knoxville; daughter, Nancy Jones of Knoxville; 13 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; sister, Beulah Leake of Maryville; sister in law, Vera Stooksbury. WOODBY, CARRIE MAUDE MAPLES - age 84, of Strawberry Plains, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001. She was a member of Ebeneezer Baptist Church most of her life. Carrie was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Rev. Otha S. Woodby and granddaughters, Robin Branch and Janet Woodby. Survivors are 9 children; sons, Bill, Ernest, Otha, Jr. (Bud), Johnny and Gary Woodby and their families; daughters, Sue Witenbarger, Pat Boston, Cathy Branch and Katie Russell and their families. She leaves four generations including 13 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. Surviving sisters and brothers are Nora Conner, Claude, Hollace and Herbert Maples. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at McCartys Evergreen Chapel on Asheville Hwy. The family will meet Tuesday morning, April 24, 2001 at 9:45 a.m. at Pollard cemetery for a at 10 a.m. Graveside service with Rev. Elmer Sharp officiating. WRIGHT, DAVID K. - age 71 of Maryville died at 7:10 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the family home. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Maryville. he served with the US Army in Germany during the Korean War. He was a lover and singer of Gospel Music singing with the Golden River Boys, The Dixie Knights, and the Gospel Tones. Hew as an electronics installer for Consolidated Electronics of Knoxville. He recently received a certificate from the Tenn. Historical Society for being a direct descendant of the first families in the state of Tenn. Preceded in death by parents, James and Nellie Wright; brothers, Albert, Luther and Frank Wright; sisters, Mary Overton, and Blanche Redden; granddaughter, Rebekah Wright; mother in law, and father in law, Charles and Susie Clabough of Townsend; brother in law and sister in law, James and Jean Clabough; brother in law, Luke Cornette. AMBROSE, ELISABETH MOORE (LIB) - age 89, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Little Creek Sanitarium. The widow of William Leonard Ambrose, Jr., she was a charter member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church, a member of the Knoxville Junior League, and active in the Chi Omega Fraternity for many years. The daughter of Paul Vernon Moore and Ethel Lyle Seabrook, Elisabeth Seabrook Moore was born at "Fredonia" in Moore, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. She attended the Spartanburg public schools, Agnes Scott College, and received the A. B. degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In her early days in Knoxville, she was employed as medical stenographer for Dr. Jarrell Penn. Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Ambrose Hudson and husband, James Paul Hudson of Atlanta; sons, William Leonard Ambrose, III and wife, Catherine Ball Ambrose and Dr. Paul Seabrook Ambrose and wife, Kathleen Hesse Ambrose, all of Knoxville; grandchildren, Sybil Hudson Jones and husband, Mason Carrington Jones of Denver, Andrew Print Hudson and James Leonard Hudson of Atlanta, Christopher Seabrook Ambrose, Elisabeth Blakely Ambrose, Colin Moore Ambrose, William Leonard Ambrose, IV and Laura Jeunesse Ambrose, all of Knoxville; great-granddaughter, Ivy Seabrook Carrington Jones. Following a private interment, there will be a memorial service at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church with Dr. William R. Barron officiaitng. BALLEW, HELEN SLIGER VANCE -age 77 of Farragut, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 22, 2001, at Park West Hospital. Helen was a member of Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ralph Vance and Mack Ballew Jr.; step- son, Richard Ballew; Survivors: children, Jane Patterson and Husband Jim of Sevierville, Randy Vance and wife Shannon of Illinois; step children, Linda Bernice McDaniel and husband Richard of Lenoir City, David Ballew and wife Frankie of Knoxville, Steve Ballew and wife Linda of Lenoir City; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church 715 Smith Road Farragut, with funeral services to follow at 8 p.m. Rev. Leonard Turner and Andrew Ballew officiating. Family and friends will gather at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Memorial cemetery for graveside services.
