BUMGARDNER, FRANCIS W. - age 89, of Powell, passed away on Friday May 4, 2001, at the St. Mary's NHC. Mr. Bumgardner enjoyed bee keeping, wood working, and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sarah Bumgardner; sisters, Laura Carter and Alice Dockery; and brothers, Lee, Ray, and 1 infant brother. He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Powell; 1 daughter, Norma Bumgardner of Powell; 1 sister, Moreen Carter of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews, family and friends. Also the family cats, Murphy and Sesame; special friends, Melvin and Lorene Ingram and Jim and Sadie Whitten. A special thanks to caregivers, Joe Goldforth and Alvena Edwards. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2001. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday May 6, 2001. BURLESON, W. T. "TED" - age 98, (would have been 99 on June 30), of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. He was a member of Marble City Baptist Church, and actively involved in many missionary and religious causes. Mr. Burleson had a long and distinguished career as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service. His last and favorite route was Route #1, the "Old Medical Arts Building on Main Avenue". He made many long-lasting friends on that route. The doctors and nurses nicknamed him "Happy" because of his great smile and joyous whistle. Following his retirement, he established the Sunshine Mission and represented the Watkins Company for several years. Preceded in death by his parents, William Tom and Ollie, and his son, William Marcus. Survivors: wife, Georgia Ruth; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jane and David Reed, Nancy Ruth and James Merritt; son and daughter-in-law, Beecher and Fretta Clapp; former daughter-in-law, Betty June Turner of Haines, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Nora May and Erby Cheatham of Stephenville, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Reverend John and Thelma Burleson of Lenoir City; brother, Paul of Ferguson, Missouri, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, also survive him. Family and friends will meet at 12:45 p.m. Saturday at Highland Memorial cemetery for a 1 p.m. graveside and interment icon service with Rev. George Williams, Rev. John Burleson, and Mr. W. C. Thornton officiating. Pallbearers: Mark Burleson, Mark Merritt, Brian Merritt, Mike Lewis, Mike Burleson, James Merritt, D. M. Reed and Howard Burleson. CLARKE, JOSEPH N., SR. - age 94, Knoxville resident for past year, passed away Friday May 4, 2001. Born January 18, 1907, he was a life long resident of Memphis, and a long time resident of Kirby Pines. A former Deacon of Second Presbyterian Church and most recently a member of Central Church, Memphis. He was a retired vice president of Union Planters Bank. Mr. Clarke was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity. He was a graduate of A.I.B. and taught banking courses for many years. Mr. Clarke was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a past president of the Germantown Kiwanis Club, the local Chapter of the National Assn. of Credit Management, and the Germantown AARP Chapter. He was a former director long term treasurer, and past president of the Germantown Charity Horse Show. Preceded in death by parents, N.P. Clarke and Emma Clarke, widower of Mildred P. Clarke and Margaret Shannon Clarke. He is survived by sons, Joseph N. Clarke, Jr., Richard T. Clarke; two granddaughters, Angelin and Emily Clarke; and brother, George W. Clarke. Funeral service will be Sunday 3 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home, Poplar Chapel. There will be a private interment icon Monday at Memorial Park. CUNNINGHAM, MABLE - age 73 of Ewing, Va. was born April 26, 1928, passed away May 3, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the New Salem Baptist Church of Speedwell, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Flossie Brittan Johnson; and her husband, Malcolm Cunningham. She is survived by son & daughter in law, Rev. Gary & Selena Cunningham of Tazewell, Jim & Sheila Cunningham of New Tazewell, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; sister, Josephine Widener of Ewing, Va.; brothers & sisters in law, Jack & Dorothy Johnson of Ewing, Va., Jim & Joyce Johnson of Fairborne, Ohio; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. DAVIS, BILLY J. - age 72 of Lenoir City, passed away suddenly, Thursday, May 3, 2001 at his home. He was retired from Liberty National Life Ins. Co. Preceded in death by parents, George and Charity Davis. Billy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Davis; children, Donald E. HURST, BOBBIE CLEO JENNINGS - age 91 of Washburn, Tenn. was born Feb. 28, 1910 and passed away May 3, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Landon Hurst; son, Roland Hurst; parents, Cleve and Mary Carpenter Jennings; sisters, Vader Lephew, Edith Miles and Irene Davidson; brothers, Steward, Leo and L.E. and grandson, Reginald Lee Nodine; great granddaughter, Rachel Striplin. She became a member of Springdale Baptist Church at an early age and later joined Pucheon Camp Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member until death. She is survived by daughter, Fay Nodine of Clinton, Ill.; two sons, Paul Owen Hurst of Huntsville, Ala., Roger Shannon Hurst of Knoxville, Tenn.; brother, Bill Jennings of Tazewell, Tenn.; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. HURT, ENOCK MACK - 79, of Knoxville, TN, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 in a Knoxville hospital. A native of Avery County, NC, he was a son of the late Rufus Monroe and Charlotte Shook Hurt. Mr. Hurt spent 30 years in Knoxville as a Building Contractor and worked for Oak Ridge National Lab as well as Fairchild Aircraft in Burlington, NC. He was a member of the Elk Mountain Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Artie Daniels Hurt of the home; daughters, Louise Lawson of Knoxville, TN, Doris Overcash of Concord, NC, Ella Bailey of Knoxville, TN, Judy McGill of Strawberry Plains, TN, Mildred Ward of Graham, NC; sons, Jimmy Hurt of Knoxville, TN, Billy Hurt of Strawberry Plains, TN; fourteen grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Enoch Hurt will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5, from the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Godfrey officiating. McCOWN, ADA LAW - departed this life May 2 at her home in Roanoke. Formerly of Loudon, Tenn. Mrs. McCown was preceded in death by husband, Edley McCown; infant daughter, Wanda Gail; and grandson, Andrew Scott Stewart. NORRIS, STANLEY - age 76 of Dandridge, passed away Friday morning, May 4, 2001 at his home following a lengthy illness. Born, March 24th 1925, he was a lifelong resident of the Chestnut Hill community of Jefferson County. A longtime and faithful member of the Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church where he served in multiple offices including Lay Leader for approximately 40 years. Stanley was founder and chairman for 25 years of the Chestnut Hill Charity Horse Show. He served in the US Army, Co. C, 88th Chemical Mortar Battalion from September 4, 1943 to January 15th, 1946, with honors including; WWII Victory Ribbon and the Bronze Star. He was preceded in death by parents, Ollie and Daisy Norris. Survivors: wife, Ina (Feezel;) Norris of the home; daughter & son, Dr. Cathy and Jack Bush of Newport; daughter, Becky Dance of Chestnut Hill; son & daughter, Craig and Beth Norris of Columbia, Tenn.; grandchildren, Kristi and Nick Oakes, Rob Domer, Megan Dance, Stan and Allie Norris, Marina Oakes; sisters, Faye Hill, Maie McKay and Carrie Norris and brother, Everett Feezel all of Sevierville; special friend, Calvin Williamson; special cousins, Edna Derrick, Wanda and Alvin Davis, Carl and Jo Norris. NEWMAN, KIRSTEN BERG - age 32 of Farragut TN, died May 3, following her courageous battle with cancer. Kirsten's home is in Farragut, where she was a member of First Farragut United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Farragut High School, studied at MTSU, Florida Southern University, the University of Tennessee, and graduated from Roane State College in the School of Nursing. Kirsten was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Miles Goosmann II, and sister, Jenny Berg. She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Newman, who is employed by Tennessee Air National Guard; 20 month old daughter, Emily Cottrell Newman; mother and step father Karen and Ronald Daves, brother Chip Daves, all of Farragut; father and step mother, Robert L. and Alyce Berg; brothers, Jacob and Jonathan Berg all of Clearwater, Florida; maternal grandmother Jeannette Cottrell of Farragut.. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2001, at the First Farragut United Methodist Church. PIERCE, JOE - age 80, of Duff, passed away Thursday evening, May 3, at St. Mary's Medical Center of Campbell County. He was a faithful member of Duff Baptist Church. Mr. Pierce was retired from Loby Concrete Products after 46 years of employment. He was also a WWII veteran of the US Army. Preceded in death by parents, Dave and Easter (Smith) Pierce and son, David Pierce. Survivors: wife, Monnie Pierce, Duff; sons, Billy Joe Pierce, Duff, Jimmy Lee Pierce, Jacksboro; daughter, Betty Pierce, Duff; grandsons, Michael Pierce, Duff, Eric and Jeremy Pierce, Speedwell; granddaughter, Michell Culler, Ohio and Amy Pierce, Speedwell; great grandchildren, Alexander and Zachery Culler.
