HAYS LOIS COGDILL - age 73, of Knoxville, went home to be with the Lord at 6:18 a.m. Sunday, May 6, 2001, at the family home, after a battle with breast cancer for the past two years. She is preceded in death by parents, Cliff and Ann Cogdill; sisters, Gladys White and Polly Craig. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bill Hays, a retired employee of BellSouth and Minister of Music; daughters, Brenda Hays McClain of Greensboro, N.C., Donna Hays of Sarasota Springs, N.Y., and Lisa Hays Jackson of Amhurst, N.H.; beloved baby, Lori Hays of Knoxville; son and daughter in law, David and Gina Hays of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Parker Luttrell, IV, and Kalissa Kincaid of Orlando, Fla., Monica and Marci McClain of Arkansas, Hays McClain of Greensboro, N.C., Lauren and Madison Jackson of Amhurst, N.H., Kara Lindsay Shoen and Medeline Marens of Sarasota Springs, N.Y., Kayla and Zoe Kostarelos and Noah Hays of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, June Lopasser of Sevierville, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Grove Baptist Church, Rev. Mike Higgens officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland South cemetery. Pallbearers: Parker Luttrell, IV, Steve McClain, Scott Jackson, Jack Hays, Rick Hill, and Clifford White. Honorary pallbearers: Dr. John Clapp, Tommy Hays, and C. Dan Scott. The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Hall, Loy Thress, Wanda Smith and Hospice of East Tenn. Baptist Hospital. The family will receive friends from 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday at the Valley Grove Baptist Church. Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Ave. at Broadway, in charge of arrangements.

HEATH, DORA DEAN McFARLAND - age 92, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2001. She was a member of Central Baptist Church, Bearden and a retired teacher with the Knoxville City School Systems. Preceded in death by husband, Noah Franklin Heath and son, Gary Richard Heath. Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. William D. and Marilyn Heath of Orlando, Fla., Harold R. and LaVaughan Heath of Knoxville; seven grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren; sisters, Clarice Wooten of Apopka, Fla. and Unice Haer of Knoxville; brother, Glen McFarland of Clarksfork, Idaho; several nieces and nephews. A brief memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Central Baptist Church, Bearden, Rev. Archie Fendley officiating. Private interment icon services at Highland Memorial cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

HOLLADAY, WILLIAM "BILLY BOB" - age 70, passed away Friday, May 4, 2001, at Hillcrest North Nursing Home. He was born May 12, 1930, and is the son of the late Dudley and Margaret Bullard Holladay. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. Family and friends will meet at Wartburg City cemetery at 3 p.m. Wednesday for an interment icon service. Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, in charge of arrangements.

LEONARD, JOHN K. - age 90, of Lenoir City, passed away Saturday evening, May 5, 2001, at Park West Hospital. John was a member of First Baptist Church, the Ivan Tinnel Sunday School Class, and Avery Lodge 593 F&AM. He was retired from TVA as a pipefitter and was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #102. John was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae Leonard; parents, John Frank and Susan Katherine Leonard, and several brothers and sisters. Survivors: children and spouses, Johnny and Ann Leonard, Shelby Jean and Bill Rose, and Kathryn and Jerry Barlow, all of Bristol, Tenn., Harriet and David Ellis of Bristol, Va., Harold and Shirley Leonard of Yuma, Ariz.; step son and wife, Edd and Nell Stalsworth of Lenoir City; 11 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; sister, Anna Walling of Bristol, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. Funeral services 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dick DeMerchant officiating. A Masonic Service will follow, conferred by Avery Lodge. Honorary pall bearers will be members of John's Sunday school class. Interment icon will be in the Loudon County Memorial Gardens. Click Funeral Home, 109 Walnut Street, Lenoir City, is serving the Leonard family.

LEWIS, ROBERT LOU - age 67, of West Knoxville, died Friday May 4, 2001 at Ft. Sanders Park West Hospital. He was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. Retired in 1998 as Director of Operations, of Clinton Seafoods. He was preceded in death by parents, Jesse Morgan & Elizabeth Rabausch Lewis & sister, Mary Elizabeth Bacon. Survivors; wife, Sharron Kaye Hankins Lewis, Knoxville; sons & daughters in law, Dr. Michael Lou & Gail Lewis, Robert Todd & Dr. Donita Lewis, all of Hollywood, Fla., Brett Morgan Lewis, Knoxville; daughters & son in law, Cynthia Dene McGarity, Va. Beach, Va., Melissa Kaye & Donald Worley, Knoxville; granddaughter, Chelsea Rae McGarity; several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Cokesbury United Methodist Church with Dr. Steven G. Sallee, Rev. Stephen DeFur officiating. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial may be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church 9908 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tenn. 37922 or Knoxville Leadership Foundation, 901 E. MAPLES, MRS. VEDA ROSE STILES - age 91, of Strawberry Plains, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Jefferson City Health and Rehabilitation Center in Jefferson City, following an extended illness. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Wynn Enterprises. Mrs. Maples was preceded in death by her husband, Sam C. Maples; daughters, Dora Henderson, Della Clifton, and Helen Maples; son-in-law, Thomas S. Snyder; parents, John and Laura Stiles, and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Blanche Snyder of Strawberry Plains; sons and daughters-in-law, Corky Maples and Kenneth Maples of Strawberry Plains, Vaughn and Rita Maples of New Tazewell, and Clifford and Jana Maples of Weathford, Texas; sons-in-law, John Henderson and Earl Clifton; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, May 8, 2001, in the Thorngrove cemetery with Dr. Fred E. Dearing III officiating. Pallbearers will be John P. Maples, Tom Maples, Kenneth R. Maples, David Henderson, Vaughn Maples, and Ricky Wolfenbarger. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Jefferson City Health and Rehabilitation Center. MILLER, FRED E. - age 61 of Knoxville, passed away April 28, 2001 at Baptist Hospital. He was a US Navy veteran serving during the Viet Nam Era. A longtime loyal friend of Bill W. A loving father of Matt & Penny and a faithful friend. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2001 with the service to follow at 8 p.m. Family and friends will meet at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at Tennessee State Veterans' cemetery for a 12 noon graveside service. STEED, CLARENCE ROY (RUNT) - age 83, of 3336 Old Hwy 72, Maryville, passed away 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Colonial Hills Nursing Home. A member of Chilhowee Baptist Church. Preceded in death by wife, Kassie Russell Steed. Survivors: brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Albert and Grace Steed of Maryville, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 8 p.m. Monday, Biereley-Hale Chapel, Rev. Tyson Matoy and Rev. Leon Amburn officiating. Interment icon 11 a.m. Tuesday, Corinth cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madisonville.

TAYLOR, JESSIE FAYE (JACKIE) BROOKS - age 74, of 1101 Oak Grove Road, Madisonville, passed away 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at her home, after a lengthy illness. A member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The daughter of the late Howard and Ethel Brooks. Survivors: husband, John R. Taylor, who she loved and was loved by for 55 years; children and spouses, who loved her greatly: Brenda and David Leslie, John H. and Helen Taylor, Kevin R. and Bev Taylor, and G. Brooks and Julie Taylor, all of Madisonville; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; six step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel Fowler, Lena Majewski, Sue Crabtree, and Nadine Benton, all of Madisonville; brother, Clyde Brooks of Loudon, and many extended family members and devoted friends. Preceded in death by sisters, Leona Rhea and Edith Millsaps. Funeral service 3 p.m. Monday, Hopewell Springs Baptist Church, Rev. Gale Kowan and Rev. David Koopman officiating. WILEY, MR. ROBERT F. (BOB) - age 71, of Maynardville, passed away 12:35 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at U.T. Medical Center. He was an Ordained Priest, Elder and High Priest of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Chilhowee Ward, Fountain City. A Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp. Preceded in death by parents, James Henry and Laura Mae Wiley of Ottertail, Minn.; brothers, George, John, James and Frances; sisters, Edith, Ethel, Eleanor, Edna and Grace. Survived by wife of 21 years, Mary E. Wiley of Maynardville; children: daughter, Wendy Rucker of Burley, Idaho; son, Robert L.Wiley of Midvale, Utah; daughter, Brenda Gough of Austin, Utah; 15 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brothers, Clayton and Chester Wiley, both of Austin, Minn.; brothers in law and sisters in law, Len and Ann Dixon, Georgia and Frank Foust, Bonnie and Wesley Wynn, and Troy Dixon, all of Maynardville; special brother in law, Jerry Dunford, Hollandale, Minn.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services 8 p.m. Sunday, Cooke Mortuary Chapel, Rev. Burney Hutchinson, Brother Charles Noe officiating. Interment icon 10:30 a.m. Monday, Lett cemetery, Maynardville. Pallbearers nephews, Andy Dixon, Scott Dixon, William Dixon, Gene Tipton, Leslie Wynn, James Wynn, Steve Williams, and Timmy Foust. BAKER, BRENDA LOUISE - of Knoxville, born February 21, 1944, died May 12, 2001. She was preceded in death by her parents, Palmer and Douglas Hickman of Rogersville. A loving wife, mother, sister and friend to her survivors who include her husband of 41 years, Tom Baker; daughter and son in law, Rebecca & Bart Taylor; daughter, Emily Baker; granddaughter, Emma Grace Baker- Hogan; brothers, Lynn & Jim Hickman; sisters, Betty White and Jamie Hanson. May God hold you in the palm of his hand. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.

BRIDGES, J.L. - age 79 of Knoxville, passed away May 10, 2001. Mr. Bridges was a World War II veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre where he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was retired from Kerns Bakery. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Trula Bridges; sons, Gary & Glenn Bridges of Knoxville; daughter, Dorothy Fisher of Springfield, Va. and four grandchildren. He had lots of friends and loved everyone. A private graveside service was held May 12, 2001 at Highland Memorial cemetery. Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

BRIDGES, MAUDE ELIZABETH - age 93, passed away May 11, 2001 at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital. Mrs. Bridges was born in Chatooga County, Ga., she was the third child of John B. and Fannie Hancock Bridges. She resided at 108 Inskip Rd. and later moved to Continuum Courtyard. A charter member of Chilhowee Hill Baptist Church. At the Senior Citizens Center she seldom missed the aerobic classes and chided others who did not participate. Having retired from South Central Bell in 1973, she was a member of the Pioneer Club. Preceding her in death were parents, Mr. and Mrs. John and Fannie Bridges; siblings, Mrs. Joseph S. (Foy) Ward of Knoxville, Clara Wyatt, Julie Feilen, Kelly G. Bridges, and John B. Bridges of Chattanooga, Tenn. Survivors include brother, Charles Bridges; nieces and nephews, Patricia Bridges, Teresa Bridges, Bobby Bridges, Vicki Cruze, Frances Gregg, Paul Gregg, Becky Lipscomb, Phyllis Pirtle, Jim Ward, and Billy Wyatt. Gerald Gregg, a great nephew, loved her dearly. Paul Gregg will miss her also. Graveside services will be held Monday May 14, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Sherwood Memorial Gardens with Rev. Marty Blakley officiating. Family and friends will meet in the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 13, 2001 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at McCarty Mortuary 4004 Holston Dr. Knoxville, Tenn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church or the Senior Citizens Center. McCarty Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

FIELDS, CLARENCE D. (CHUCK) - age 78, of Knoxville, died Saturday morning May 12, 2001. He was an US Army veteran, a retired auto mechanic, and a Catholic. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira & Flossie Harris Fields. Mr. Fields is survived by his wife, Doris June Ovink Fields of Newburgh, NY; daughter, April Lyn Fields of Knoxville; brother, Lester Fields of Minnesota; four grandchildren; one great grandson. Funeral service 10 a.m. Thursday at Washington Pike United Methodist with Dr. James Bailes officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment icon will follow. Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

GARRETT, REV. ANCIL F. - of Knoxville, Tenn. passed away on Friday, May 11, 2001 with his family at his side after a long illness. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Fountain City. Ancil was ordained to the gospel ministry at Clear Springs Baptist Church in 1949. His pastorates include the following churches: Little Valley Baptist, Clear Branch Baptist, Warwicks Chapel Baptist and Indian Ridge Baptist. He was a graduate of Gibbs High School and Knoxville Business College. He was a longtime employee of Knoxville Iron Company as Sales & Production Manager. He was retired from the Mayo Garden Center and was a veteran of World War II serving as a Tech Sgt. with the US Air Crop in the South Pacific Theater. He was the last surviving member of the Frank Garrett family being preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Frank and Jona Garrett; sisters, Mrs. Beulah Simmons, Mrs. Opal Vineyard and Mrs. Violet Henry and infant children, Judy Carol and Allen Winston. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Ruth Hensley Garrett; children, Hugh F. Garrett of Louisville, Tenn., Velma L. Garrett of Knoxville, Tenn., and Joyce M. Garrett of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Mary Ruth Collins of Louisville, Tenn. and Matthew F. Garrett of Cabot, Ark.; three great grandchildren, Cody and Chase Garrett, and Madison Collins. Also surviving are special brother in law & sister in law, E.C. and Kate Garrett; lifelong friend, Deadrick Lakin; special friends, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Marshall; several nieces and nephews, and a great host of friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday Mynatt's Chapel with Rev. Lloyd Henry, Rev. Swan Bush, and Rev. Albert Tipton officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Baptist Church cemetery with the East Tennessee Veteran Honor Guard officiating. Pallbearers will be Matthew Garrett, Ray Garrett, Daryl Henry, Ray Allen Myers, Shawn Collins, and Carl Foster. Honorary pallbearers will be John Wynn, Dewey Munsey, Leo Walker, Ed Williams, Nelson Lakin, Charles Estes, Weldon Brock, Mack McKenzie, and Tom Emmitt. Special thanks is given to Robert Thompson, MD, the staff of Baptist Hospital of East Tenn. and Baptist Hospice for their kindness during his illness. Arrangements by Mynatt's Funeral Home.
