GODWIN, HELEN ROGGLI - Age 80, formerly of Knoxville, TN. Died at her home in Germantown, MD on Wednesday, May 9, 2001. Beloved wife of the late Robert H. Godwin, she is survived by her son Gary Johnson and wife Sandra of Mt. Airy, MD, daughters; Diane Mrsny of Germantown, MD, Stephanie Larman and husband Stuart of Cairo, Egypt, Lisa Johnson of St. Augustine, FL; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at Mars Hill Baptist Church, 1540 Robinson Rd, Knoxville, TN 37923 on Monday, May 14, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. The family request, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Mars Hill Baptist Church Building Fund. Interment icon will be private.

HAMBY, NEWTON EARL - 80 of Chattanooga was called to his eternal rest on Thursday May 10, 2001. He formerly lived in Clinton, Tenn. He and wife, Eva were charter members of Faith Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He served as a demolitions expert in World War II, Pacific Theatre, Luzon, Philippine Islands and Signal Corps during the occupation of Japan. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and received 2 Purple Hearts. He worked at Wright Aeronautical in Cincinnati, Ohio preceding the war as a machinist. Following the war he was employed with Union Carbide Corporation for 35 years at the Y-12 Plant until his retirement in the early 80's. He is survived by Irene Tipps of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 2 sons, Eric Hamby and wife, Chris; daughter, Taylor, Clinton, Tenn. and Ethan Hamby and Melissa Baker, Charlotte, NC; 2 sisters, Arleva Heidle, Wartburg, Tenn., Wanda & husband, Charles Nickens, Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother, Martin & wife, Iona Hamby, Chattanooga, Tenn.; many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by wife, Eva Edwards Hamby; father, Clenice and mother, Alma Hamby, Oakdale, Tenn.; 2 brothers, Gus Hamby, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Ed Hamby, Oakdale, Tenn.; and sister, Viola Ootan, Oakdale, Tenn. The family will receive friends Sunday May 13, 2001 from 6-8 p.m. at Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg, Tenn. Funeral services will be held Monday May 14, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Chattanooga, Tenn., with viewing and visitation beginning at 11 a.m. Funeral services will also be held Tuesday May 15, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church Oak Ridge, Tenn. with viewing and visitation beginning at 11 a.m. Procession to Anderson Memorial Gardens and graveside services will be held immediately following the service at Faith Lutheran. Friends and family are encouraged to attend whichever service is most convenient to their schedule and location. HAUN, SWAYNE JOHN - age 82 of Knoxville, passed away Friday May 11, 2001 at his home. He was a member of the Teamsters Union #786. Preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood and Zella Mae Haun and numerous brothers and sisters. Survivors include wife of 41 years, Lynn Haun; sister, Deloris Spyker of Cape Coral, Fla.; sister in law, Katherine Williams; brother in law, Eugene Daverman; brother in law, James Stallings, and a host of nieces and nephew. McCarty Mortuary 4004 Holston Dr. in charge of arrangements.

JONES, JANICE LAUDERMILK - 57, of 906 Cannon St., Sweetwater died suddenly Friday May 11, 2001. Daughter of the late Raymond & Grace Nelson Laudermilk. Arrangements later. Loudon Funeral Home in charge.

KIRBY, OTTIE KASERMAN - age 92, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday May 12, 2001 at Hillcrest North. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville where she was once active in the WMU. Best remembered for her 43 year career as a teacher in the Knoxville City School System, she taught art and crafts as well as English. She retired from Fulton High School in 1971. Throughout her career, many enjoyed her creativity through decorations and flower arrangements for special events. Ottie loved gardening and was a long time member of the Flower Lover's Club of Knoxville. She served for many years on the Board of Directors both for the Cerebral Palsy Center and the Senior Citizens Information and Referral Service. She was also active in the Mobile Meals program and the Saturday Morning Handicap Bowling League. Preceded in death by husband, H.H. Kirby; parents, Dr. and Mrs. E.O. Kaserman; sister, Marie and brothers, John, Hugh Ed and Sam Kaserman. Survived by two sons, Sam and wife, Debbie and Matthew of Knoxville and foster daughter, Bobbie Hammitt of Fla.; grandchildren, Todd Kirby of Knoxville, Jan Kirby of Powell and Christopher Kirby of Flagstaff, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews. Service 8 p.m. Monday Mynatt's Chapel. Dr. David Hull officiating. Family & friends will meet 11 a.m. Tuesday Highland Memorial cemetery for interment icon service. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Mynatt's.

LAYMANCE, CHARLES FRANCIS - 69, Oliver Springs, died at the Methodist Medical Center on May 11, 2001. Born in Harriman, Tennessee on November 14, 1931 to parents Charles and Anna Laymance. Retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Y-12, as a chemical operator. A veteran with the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Baptist faith. Member of the Faith Masonic Lodge # 756. Preceded in death by son, John Kenneth Laymance, 6-23-1984; wife, Joan Basler Laymance, 9-171998. Survivors include: son, Richard "Pete" Laymance and wife, Melissa of Clinton; grandchildren, Clarissa Ann Laymance and Wade Laymance of Clinton. Several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary Monday 14, 2001, 8 p.m. with Joe Widner officiating. Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, 11 a.m. Oak Grove cemetery, Rockwood, TN. The family will receive friends Monday, 6--8 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge.

MATTHEWS, ALBERTA VAUGHN DYKES - age 74, of Kingston, departed this life on Monday, May 7, 2001, at 11:46 a.m. at her residence. She is preceded in death by husband, James Willie Dykes; son, Frank Michael Dykes and daughter, Sharon Faye Dykes. Survivors include daughter, Jan Garling; sister, Mabel Manis Pelfrey; daughter-in-law, Georgia Jennings; eight grandchildren, Caroline Taylor Benning of Punta Gorda, Fla., Sharon Dykes Gant of Hennegar, Ala., Frank Michael Dykes II of Dutton, Ala., Andrea Taylor Archambault of Biloxi, Miss., James Sean Taylor of Oak Ridge, Alice Dykes of Knoxville, Shelley Taylor Turner of Biloxi, Miss., and Tabaitha Dykes of Ider, Ala.; 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Sean Taylor and Mike Dykes; great-grandson, Jeremy Cummings, and nephews, Ron Manis, Steve Manis, and Phil Manis. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 10., 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of McCarty Mortuary with Rev. John Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in the Asbury cemetery. MAULL, MRS. BROWNELL - of Anniston, Ala. passed away May 12, 2001 at the home of her daughter in Knoxville. Knoxville survivors include daughter, Ara Nail of 115 N. Van Guilder. LUNSFORD, LLOYD - age 81, a resident of Wood Village Lodge, Sweetwater, formerly of Madisonville, passed away 9:40 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2001 at Wood Village Lodge. Member of Westside Baptist Church. Served as a deacon for over 50 years. Retired from Operating Engineers Local 917. Member of York Rite-Pride Council #103, Scottish Rite-Royal Arch #186, Tellico Masonic Lodge #80. He was a 32nd degree Mason. Son of the late Levi and Mary Jane Lunsford. Survivors: wife of 63 years, Irene Henry Lunsford; daughter & son in law, Carolyn & Charles Renfro, Blaine, Tenn.; sons & daughter in law, Jim Lunsford, Gary & Brenda Lunsford, all of Oak Hill, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; preceded in death by daughter, Bettye Jean Scruggs. Funeral was 8 p.m. Saturday, Biereley-Hale Chapel, Rev. R.L. Davis, Rev. Carl Croft officiated. Masonic graveside service and interment icon 2 p.m. Sunday Haven Hill Memorial Gardens. McDAVE, MRS. MARY RUTH MOULDEN BONDS - of Knoxville, departed this life, May 9, 2001 at Baptist Hospital. Born March 10, 1926 to Mr. and Mrs. John (Ola Bell) Moulden. She was a member of Peace and Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents; one brother; five sisters; one niece and several in laws. Survivors; sons, James and Calvin Spencer Bonds; daughter, Regina Bonds Farney; daughter in law, Beverly Smith Bonds; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; nine nieces and nephews; twelve great nieces and nephews; ten great-great nieces and nephews; many other cousins, other relatives and friends to include the Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church family; the staff of East Tenn. MONTGOMERY, JAMES E. "RED", JR. - age 67 of Maryville, died at 6:05 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital. He owned his own business, Montgomery Associates. Preceded in death by parents, James Sr. & Sybil P. Montgomery; brother, C.W. Montgomery. Survivors include; wife of 39 years, Joan C. Montgomery; daughter, Joella Ashley Montgomery; special nephew, Clinton Eugene Montgomery; special niece, Paige Sands; sisters, Anita Haynes of Maryville, Faye Kennedy of Okla., Ellen Daniels Finger, Judy Douglas and Jody Montgomery all of Maryville; many nieces and nephews. MOORE, PHILLIP DARRINGFORD - born August 29, 1920, the son of Laura Mabel Bonnie Phillips Moore & Max Darringford Moore in the town of Port Huron, Michigan left this world at 1:30 a.m. Sunday 4/29/01. Phillip attended three years at Notre Dame University. Serving in the Merchant Marines at the start of World War II, a veteran of World War II serving in Europe as a member of the United States Air Force, an employee of General Electric for 35 years working as a field engineer in Michigan, Hawaii, California, the southeast Tennessee & surrounding states. Preceded in death by wife, Betty Jane Wishmeyer Moore; sister, Veronica Moore Hadley; and son, Brian Phillip Moore. Survived by: Mary Louise Moore, wife & soulmate; Bonnie Mary Moore Speegle, daughter & husband, Wayne, Collen Mary Moore, daughter; Kevin Michael Moore, son & wife, Susan, Barry Thomas Moore, son; Blake Thomas Moore, grandson; James Roy Baysinger, III, step son; James Roy Baysinger, IV, step grandson and wife, Jennifer, Jeremy Alan Baysinger, step grandson, Jonathan David Baysinger, step grandson; James Christopher Whaley, step great grandson; Julia Raquel Baysinger, step great granddaughter; Jacob Steven Baysinger, step great grandson; Kathy Baysinger Dawn, step daughter & husband, Steve; Karla Whitener, step granddaughter, Robin Lewanski, step granddaughter & husband, Brett; Ricky Whitener, step grandson; Sydnie Seay-Whitener, step great granddaughter, Regan Lewanski, step great granddaughter; Hazel M. They also regularly attended services at Church Street United Methodist Church, 900 Henley St. Phillip Moore and wife, Louise Moore received numerous public recognition's for their many years of volunteer work at Lakeshore Mental Health Hospital. Phillip and Louise enjoyed almost 25 years of a very happy marriage pursuing two of their favorite interests of volunteer work and square dancing. Phillip will be remembered by many for his friendship, honest and energy for life from all whose lives his touched in his 80 years with us. MUSTIN, ERLENE - age 83, of Kingston, Tenn. formerly of Rogersville, went to be with the Lord Friday morning, May 11, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge following an extended illness. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Mustin; parents, Pryor and Annie Trent; two sisters, Lizzie Fugate and Thelma Paul; and two brothers, Cas Trent and P.H. Trent, Jr. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Keith and Carolyn Mustin of Kingston; one brother and sister in law, C.D. (Dick) and Alva Trent of Rogersville; two sisters, Bernice Laster of Morristown and Virginia Bernard of Rogersville; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Sunday May 13, 2001 at Colboch-Price Funeral Home with the funeral services following at 7 p.m. with Rev. Charlie Gibson officiating. REID, GARY T. - a native of North Carolina, but had made his home in Knoxville for the past 27 years, died Friday, May 11, 2001. He was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church since 1976. He was a Youth Sunday school teacher and Youth Coordinator for many years. After attending the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, Gary began his career in the furniture industry in manufacturing, furniture design, and sales. He was also an experienced Aviculturist, specializing in exotic parrots. Mr. Reid was co founder and past president of the Tennessee Valley Exotic Bird Club. Known thru out the southeast for his work with endangered parrots and the breeding of many Amazon parrot species. He was a volunteer at the Knoxville Zoo since 1987. In June 1986, Gary was diagnosed with heart disease and underwent successful by-pass surgery. Gary was introduced to a support group for heart patients. The group soon formed Mended Hearts, Chapter 24. Gary was a charter member and past president of the Knoxville chapter. He has been an accredited hospital visitor with Mended Hearts since 1987 offering support to heart patients and their families. He was presented the Leadership by Example Award and Time to Care Award by the local community. Preceded in death by father, Theodore Reid; sister, Pamela Reid. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, Marie Reid; son, Barry Reid; son and daughter in law, Chris and Sharon Reid; beloved grandsons, Briar and Cade Reid; his loving mother, Doris Reid; his loving mother in law, Ernestine Noble. Funeral service will be Monday, 2 p.m. at Church Street United Methodist Church with Rev. William J. Fowler and Rev. Cabel Trent officiating. Interment icon in Edgewood cemetery. SHORTER, CLARENCE GABE - age 80, of Halls, passed away Friday May 11, 2001 at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was retired from ORNL, a member of Pipe & Steam Fitters Local #102, and a World War II veteran. He attended Arlington Church of Christ. Mr. Shorter was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Maude Baker Shorter; brothers, Henry, Bud, and Richard Shorter; sisters, Dela Manis, Lyde McFall, Pearl Stubblefield, and Ann Campbell; and grandson, Nicholas Gabe Shorter. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pauline (Polly) L. Shorter; sons & daughters in law, Larry W. and Janet Shorter, Donnie E. and Karen Shorter, and Ronnie E. Shorter; grandchildren, Michelle, Michael, Brittney, and Jenny Shorter, and Krissy Brine; great granddaughter, Alexis Nicole Shorter; sisters, Thelma Savory and Edna S. Terry and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jack Benhayon and the staff of the North Knoxville Dialysis Clinic for all their special care. Family & friends will meet Monday at the main entrance to Highland Memorial cemetery for an 11:30 a.m. graveside service with Dr. Tom Drinnon officiating.
