STALSWORTH, GLADYS LORENA CARMON - born March 9, 1913, died Thursday May 10, 2001. She was a charter member of Central United Methodist Church and the married Couples Sunday School class. Mrs. Stalsworth had served on the staff of the YMCA. The widow of Jack D. Stalsworth, she is survived by her daughters, Nancy Stalsworth Hopkins and husband, Tom of Maynardville and Linda Stalsworth Honea of Knoxville; grandchildren, Aaron & Andy Hale, Tommy Hopkins all of Knoxville and Blaine Honea of Colo.; sister, Eva Grimm of Sevierville. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of St. Mary's Home Health Care and especially, nurses, Mary & Leah and nurses aide, Pat. Family & friends will meet Mon. at the main entrance to Highland Memorial cemetery for a 10 a.m. graveside service with Mr. Don Akers officiating. Members of the married Couples Sunday school class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 201 Third Ave., Knoxville, Tenn. 37917. SWANN, WILLIAM LESTER (JOE) - age 87 of Knoxville passed away 3:30 a.m. Saturday May 12, 2001 at Hillcrest North. He was of the Methodist faith. Preceded in death by wife, Martha Ruth Reese Swann. Survivors: daughter & son in law, Shirley & Jerry Vaught; grandchildren, Andrea & husband, Doug Powell, Nick Vaught, Chris Vaught; great grandsons, Andrew Shade Powell; sisters & brothers in law, Reva & Floyd Moore, Racine & Cecil Chambers; brothers in law, Reva & Floyd Moore, Racine & Cecil Chambers; half brothers, Calvin, A.B.,D.R. Swann; sisters in law, Edna & Mildred Swann; several nieces & nephews. Family & friends will meet 11 a.m. Monday at Hills Union cemetery for graveside service. SYLVESTER, LUCILLE A. WELCH - age 84, widow of Carl Sylvester, of 158 Unicoi Church Road, Tellico Plains, passed away 3 a.m. Saturday May 12, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Member of Unicoi Baptist Church. Original owner of Tellico Flowers. Survivors: daughter & son in law, Janet & Jim Hooper, Tellico Plains; son & daughter in law, Jim & Martha Sylvester, Charleston, SC; grandchildren & spouses, Chad & Brook Hooper, Carrie & Mark Mobley, all of Tellico Plains, Pamela & Tommy Douglas, Lanell Watkins, all of Charleston, SC; great grandchildren, Jordan & Carly Hoope, Madison Lanee' Mobley, Kayla & Lindsey Douglas, Taylor Watkins; sisters, Edna Earl (Pee Wee) Watson, Madisonville, Neljo Isbill, Athens; several nieces & nephews. Preceded in death by great grandson, Shawn Douglas. She will be especially missed by her Sunday school class and her pastor, Michael Prock, who had been her friend and spiritual supporter during her illness. ARP, WANDA LEE RAPER - age 66, of 171 Kincaid Rd., Madisonville, passed on to be with the Lord 6:45 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2001 at her home after a prolonged illness. Graduate of Madisonville High School, a seamstress with 411 Corporation for 31 years. Member of Notchey Creek Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her love, humility and devotion to Jesus Christ and her family. She led a quiet life with a faith-filled, forward looking mind set. She brought joy to her family and friends alike. Survivors; daughters & son in law, Judy A. & Keith Sitzler, Madisonville, Belinda A. Harrill, Athens; sons & daughters in law, N. Bruce & Kim Arp, C. Timothy & Kelly Arp all of Madisonville; grandchildren & spouse, James W. & Christina Harrill, Sarah A. Arp, Emily B. Sitzler, Christopher C. Arp, Matthew A. Arp, Benjamin L. BALES, NAOMI ODLE - age 100 of North Knoxville, died Saturday June 2, 2001. She attended Loveland Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Robert C. Bales; son, Robert P. Bales; granddaughter, Cathy Marie Bales; six brothers; and four sisters. Survivors: sons and daughter in law, Lynn Bales, Port Huron, Mich., William A. Bales, Kodak, Lloyd and Aileen Bales, Knoxville; daughters and son in law, Elizabeth Ann Winstead, Kodak, Norma Jean and Jesse McCarter, Knoxville; 19 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements incomplete. Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel in charge.

BATTENDIERI, LYDIA BLAND - age 88 of Ocean Township died Friday at the Jersey Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Eatontown. She was employed for over 46 years by the Cape May County office of the State of New Jersey Department of Higher Education. She received a college teaching degree from Glassboro School and a Masters Degree in Education from Glassboro State College. She began her employment career as an elementary school teacher in Galloway Township, moved to Middle Township as a teacher and then a teaching and non teaching Principal. She served as President of the Middle Township Education Assoc., Vice President of Cape May-Atlantic Principal's Assoc., Director of the 1973-76 Summer Workshop for Interning for Learning, Director of Right to Read of Cape May and Atlantic Counties, Consultant for Interning for Learning from 1970-77, and as an Adjunct Staff member of the faculty of Glassboro State College. She was a member of the Educational Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also the co-author of several Interning for Learning publications. She retired in 1979 as School Program Coordinator, Cape May County. Born in Toronto, Canada, she lived in Galloway Township, Glassboro, Cape May Court House, and Knoxville, Tenn. before moving to Ocean Township in 1998. She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, John D. Battendieri in 1978. Surviving are a son and daughter in law, John and Fran Battendieri of Soquel, Calif.; two daughters and sons in law, Jo and Louis Hernandez of Ocean Township and Jennifer and George Criss of Knoxville, Tenn.; a brother and sister in law, Albert and Alberta Bland of Joppa, Maryland; 6 grandchildren, Lisa Kaes, Trisha Gallagher, Lydia, Lindsay and Kimberly Criss, and Grace Battendieri; and 3 great grandchildren, Max and Skyler Kaes, and Cole Gallagher. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 9425 Third Ave. Stone Harbor, NJ. Interment icon will follow in Fairview Memorial park, Cape May Court House. At the request of the family, memorial donations to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, 386 Park Ave. South 17th Floor, New York, NY 10016-8804, or a charity of choice, would be appreciated. BEENE, MR. KENNETH D., SR. - age 78 of Knoxville, formerly of Morgan Co., passed away suddenly Friday June 1, 2001. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps serving in World War II. He retired from Uniroyal Inc. in Detroit Mich. He was a member of the Black Oak Heights Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion Post #0002. Survived by loving wife, Dorothy Jean Patrick Beene; sons, Kenneth D. Jr. and wife, Sharon Beene of Va., Keith D. and wife, Jamey Beene of Ga., Nelson and wife, Lois Beene of Ga.; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters, Pauline Anderson of Va., Lena Jones of Knoxville; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends Sunday evening, June 3, 2001 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will follow visitation at 8 p.m. Schubert Funeral Home, Chapel Wartburg, with Rev. Mike Ramage officiating. Graveside services will be Tuesday June 5, 2 p.m. in the Tenn. State Veterans cemetery Knoxville, Tenn.

BRADLEY, MABEL F. - age 94 of Alcoa, passed away Saturday morning June 2, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Miller Funeral Home, Maryville.

BRADSHAW, PATRICIA H. - age 69 of Knoxville, passed away Friday June 1, 2001. She was a member of Graystone Presbyterian Church and was retired from Drumhellers, Inc. after many years of service. Survivors: husband, George N. Bradshaw, Jr.; son and daughter in law, Tom and Patty Bradshaw; daughter and son in law, Becky and Jerry Minnich; six grandchildren, Michael, Amy, Will, Stephen, Suzanne, Missy. Funeral services will be Monday 11 a.m. at Graystone Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mark Knisley officiating. Interment icon will be at Woodlawn cemetery. Family will receive friends Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at Graystone Presbyterian Church. Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy. in charge.

COKER, ALBERT - of Knoxville, departed this life June 1, 2001 at Ft. Sanders Hospital. Arrangements will be announced later by Jarnigan & Son Mortuary.

COOPER, MR. CLYDE D. - age 79, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday May 31, 2001, at the Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the Bonview Baptist Church, the Charles McKinney Masonic Lodge #433 for over fifty years, and the May Chapter #14 of the Eastern Star. He was a highly decorated W.W.II veteran which included the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Elite Group known as Merrills Marauders which participated in action in the India and Burma regions and secured the ground for the Burma Road. He also worked for over 40 years as a barber at the Cooper and Baldwin Barber Shop which was located in Tenn. Ave. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Cooper; 1 son, Ronald W. Clevenger, and 1 half brother, George Grant. Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife, of 52 years, Betty Estes Cooper of Knoxville; 1 son, Randal L. Cooper of Knoxville; 1 daughter, Clydette McReynolds and husband, Joseph of Seymore; 1 grandson, Brandon Clevenger and wife, Marci of Durham, NC; 1 sister, Vivian Jennings and husband, Ken of Canton, Ohio; sister in law, and brother in law, Dr. Jerry and Erma Fay of Providence Rhode Island; 1 nephew, Kenneth Jennings of Severn, Maryland and 1 niece, Wendy Plumbo of Palm Coast, Fla. A very special friend, Nancy Sheppard. Also his granddog, Buffett. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday June 3, 2001 at the Weaver Funeral Home with A Masonic service at 7 p.m. and the funeral service to follow. The Revs. Harvey Harmon and Verlin Smith will officiate. Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon on Tuesday June 5, 2001 at the Tennessee Veteran cemetery on Northshore, Dr., with full military honors. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Bonview Baptist Church. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

DYKES, VIRGIL KENNETH - age 75 of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away Friday June 1, 2001 at the home of his niece, Bobbie Kay Chadwell of Indianapolis, Ind. He was a veteran of WWII and a member of Indianapolis, Masonic Lodge #669. Survived by wife, Wilma Lawson Dykes of Indianapolis, Ind.; sister, Genese Wilkerson; brothers, Miles, Elton, and Bethel Dykes; niece, Bobbie Kay Chadwell of Indianapolis, Ind. and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside services 1 p.m. Wednesday June 6, 2001 and interment icon to follow in Warren Memorial Gardens in Stanfield, Tenn. with Rev. Asbury Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday June 5 in the Chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home. Martin Wilson Funeral Home of LaFollette in charge of arrangements.

EVERHART, HOWARD W. (BILL) - age 66 of Knoxville, passed away May 31, 2001 at 10:31 p.m. at Baptist Hospital after an illness with cancer. He served in the United States Marines during the Koran Conflict. He leaves his wife, Nancy (Brady) Everhart; daughters, Debi Pender of Orlando, Fla., Pam Weber of Norfork, Va., Cathi Baldwin of Johnson City, Tenn., Sonya Reeder of Plano, TX; son, Jason Hendren of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Donnie Everhart of Maryland, Forrest Everhart of Kansas, Joe Everhart of Winchester, Va.; sisters, Kitty Shepherd and Linda Everhart of Winchester, Va.; grandchildren, Shane and Paige Pender of Orlando, Fla., Gina Turbyfill and Dustin Peterson of Johnson City, Tenn., Chase, Abbie and Ethen Reeder of Plano, TX. Pallbearers, Clinton Mears, Phil Turner, Jerry Sharp, Gene and Brian Hale and Jim Brady. Service 2:30 Sunday Chapel, Rev. David S. Reeder officiating. ELLISON, EMILY STEPHENSON HOUCK - age 59, passed away at her home on June 2, 2001. Emily was a member of Lonsdale Baptist Church and retired from TVA after 36 years of service. She was also a member of First Families of Tennessee. Emily was the loving wife of George R. Ellison, proud and loving mother of Shane Cameron Houck, loving daughter of Margaret L. Stephenson and the late Walter H. Stephenson and received long term care by much loved sister, Judith Ann tucker and husband, Ralph A. Tucker of Knoxville. Other survivors are daughter in law, Angela Davis Houch and her daughter, Alexis; niece, Theresa LeaAnn Tucker all of Knoxville; nephew, Hubert Stephenson Tucker and wife, Christine and their son, Stephen Curtis and Nicholas Anthony Tucker of Morristown; aunts, Billie L. Cannon and Thelma Girardin of Knoxville; special cousins, Phyllis Vananda, Henry Edward Vananda, Polly Long and husband, Bob, Doris Padgett and husband, Bob of Norris, Herbert Linginfelter and wife, Kathleen of Lenoir City, Sandra W. Lloyd and husband, John of Irvonna, Pa., Bill Bob Davis and wife, Polly of Knoxville, Tom Cannon of Knoxville; forever friend, Wanda Faye Day and husband, Hiram of Knoxville; child of the heart, Linda Gail Griffin Monroe and husband, Curtis of Knoxville. FINN, REBECCA M. - age 87, of Knoxville, died Friday June 1, 2001 at Shannondale Health Care Center. She was a member of P.E.O. and Delta Kappa Gamma, Suburban Hills Garden Club and former Supervisor of the Special Education Department in Knoxville City Schools. She was the proud parent of two Eagle Scouts. Survived by husband, William P. Finn; sons and daughter in law, William P. Finn II and wife, Jane Finn and Mike Finn; grandson, Patrick Finn; sister in law, Jennie K. McElroy; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Shirley Johnson. Family and friends will meet at 12:45 p.m. Monday at Highland Memorial cemetery for a 1 p.m. graveside service and interment icon with Chaplain Patti Sunday-Winters officiating. HUNLEY, CORNIA - age 91 of Sanford, Fla., formerly of Maryville, passed away Thursday evening, May 31, 2001 at Central Florida Regional Medical Center, Sanford, Fla. Mrs. Hunley was born May 18, 1910 in Hancock Co., Tenn. For the past 11 years she resided with her daughter, Lura Payne and grandchildren in Fla. During her years in Tennessee she was active in the Unity Baptist Church singing in the choir. She was an avid quilter and gardener, retired from the Palm Beach Co. as a machine operator. Preceded in death by son, J.D. Hunley. Survivors: daughters, Lucille Justice of New Martinsville, W. Va., Lura Payne of Sanford, Fla.; son, Charles Hunley of Cary, NC; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; sister, Reatha Capps of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday June 3, 2001 Magnolia Chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Rev. Dan Bartell officiating. Interment icon to follow in Clark's Grove cemetery.
