Preceded in death by husband, Jesse "Buster" Smith; parents, Sam and Maude Dalton. Survivors: son, David F. Smith; sisters, Frances Hall, Margaret Clark and Lucile Allen, and brother, Samuel Edward Dalton, all of Knoxville. Family and friends will meet at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at Lynnhurst cemetery for a 2 p.m. graveside service and interment, Rev. Paul Trumpore officiating. SOWARD, JAMES B. (JIM) - age 77 of Lenoir City, passed away Monday morning, June 25, 2001 at the Parkwest Hospital. He was a member of Lenoir City Church of Christ. A retired engineer for Y-12 in Oak Ridge. Jim was a veteran of WWII serving in the Navy. Preceded in death by mother, Ruby Soward Fine. Survived by wife of 58 ½ years, Mary Fine Soward; daughter, Emily Soward Brookshire and husband, Jackie of Lenoir City; son, Dan Soward of Lenoir City; grandchildren, Nancy Johnson of Lenoir City, Eddie Browder of Lenoir City, Jennifer Alexander of Knoxville, Shane Soward and Josh Soward both of Rossville, Ga.; 5 great grandchildren, Bret Browder, Blaize Browder and Noelle Johnson all of Lenoir City, Austin Soward and Ethan Soward of Rosseville, Ga.; aunt, Nelle McDaniel of Lenoir City; several cousins; brother in law, Bob Fine and wife, Betty of Rockwood. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Click Funeral Home. Family and friends will proceed from the funeral home to Lake View cemetery for graveside services at 11 a.m. with Brother Albert Griffin and Brother Kent Bailey officiating. TALLENT, LORETTA FAYE - age 31, of 679 Little Notchey Creek Road, Madisonville, passed away 9 a.m. Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. She attended Sweetwater Church of God of Prophecy. Survivors: husband, Jeff Tallent; mother, Brenda Kay Baker of Madisonville; father, Rickey Shephard of Tellico Plains; grandmother, Iva Lee Mason of Vonore; sisters, Lisa Hicks, Jeanie Russell and Charlotte Pressley; brother, Willis Winkler, Jr., all of Madisonville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday, Biereley-Hale Chapel, Rev. Bill Yates officiating. Interment icon in Madisonville Church of God of Prophecy cemetery. WEAR, NANCY KATHLEEN TYLER - age 72, of Tellico Plains, passed away 2:55 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2001, at U. T. Hospital. She was a member of Poplar Bluff Baptist Church and Tellico Plains O.E.S. #324. Daughter of the late Walter Kash and Rinda Jane Tyler. Preceded in death by son, James Michael Wear and brother, Troy Tyler. Survivors: loving daughter, Elizabeth Jane Wear of Knoxville; sisters and brother-in-law, Pauline and Charles Caughron of Tellico Plains, and Mary Farmer of Knoxville; brother, Goodloe M. Tyler; sister-in-law, Veta Tyler, both of Madisonville; several devoted nieces and nephews that she dearly loved as her own children. Many other family members and friends she had in her lifetime. Funeral service 8 p.m. Tuesday, Biereley-Hale Chapel, Rev. Beecher Miller and Rev. Johnny Stewart officiating. Interment icon 2 p.m. Wednesday, Piney Grove cemetery, Ronnie Wells officiating. ARMSTRONG, OLIVE VANCE - age 89, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday morning, June 26, 2001, at Holston Health Care. Member of Eastminister Presbyterian Church. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2001, at Asbury cemetery for an 11 a.m. interment icon service, Rev. Dr. Richard Hawks officiating. BERRY, EDITH EURA McCOLLISTER - age 83, of Knoxville, died 7 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospice. Member of New Hope Baptist Church and attended Paradise Missionary Baptist Church. Former employee of Holston Knitting Mills. Former co-owner and founder of Big Orange Cab Co. She lived with her son, Hubert and his wife Bonnie Berry for 14 years. Preceded in death by husband, Lester L. Berry; grandson, Richard Berry. Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, June and Bob Key and Geraldine and Rev. Bud Berry, both of Knoxville; daughter, Helen Goodwin of Chicago, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. CARMON, MRS. THELMA L. - age 91, of New Tazewell, Tenn., was born November 27, 1909, and went to be with her Savior, Tuesday, June 26, 2001. She professed faith in Christ at an early age and joined Mayes Chapel United Methodist Church, where she remained a faithful life long member. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cyruss Lee and Mary Elizabeth (Lynch) Large; loving husband of 62 years, John Carmon; sons, Kemp, Byrl (J.B.), and twins, William and Willard Carmon; daughter, Mary Lou Carmon; brothers, Costal Large and Robert Rowland; sisters, Lois Rowland, Gladys Large, Atlee Ford, and Martha Neely. She is survived by her daughter, Lois E. (Carmon) Keck of New Tazewell, Tenn.; grandsons, Robert and wife Linda Keck of New Tazewell, Tenn., and Lawrence E. CHESNEY, MR. RALPH G. - age 90, of Luttrell, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 27, 2001, at his home. A member of the Jehovah's Witness. Preceded in death by parents, Carr and Rettie Chesney; brothers, Darrell, Rowe and Charlie Chesney. DAVIS, MS. RUTH KISER - age 75, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. Ms. Davis was a long time resident of the Knoxville area. She was a member of Oasis Institute and New Hopewell Baptist Church, as well as an active member of the Seniors for Creative Learning and the National Organization for Women. After raising her five daughters, she was employed for many years by the Knox County School System, and as a LPN at Baptist Hospital. Ms. Davis was preceded in death by her parents, Taze and Nannie Kiser; husband, Ray Davis; daughter, Elizabeth Davis; granddaughter, Ruth Ellen Kiser; brothers, John, Cecil, Bishop, Kern, and Jennings Kiser; sister, Mary Nell Kiser. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law and children, Kathy and Taise Kiser, James and Liz, all of Virginia; daughter, Barbara Allyn Kiser of Clinton; daughter and son-in-law and children, Ruth and Stuart Metzger, Shari and Heather, all of Maryland; daughter, Sharon Davis of Knoxville; affectionately adopted daughter, Sue MacDougall of Clinton; son-in-law and child, Gary Johnson and Matt of North Carolina; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Carlos Carter of Dayton, and many nieces and nephews and countless friends. DUFFIELD, KEVIN HAROLD - passed away on June 26, 2001, at the Southern Region Hospital in Riverdale, Georgia. Born October 12, 1951, in Johnson City, Tennessee, attended public schools in Johnson City and Knoxville, Tennessee, was a graduate of Austin East High School and the University of Tennessee (1974). He was self-employed. He received the Lord at an early age and renewed his faith by joining the Greater Mount Carmel A.M.E. Church in Doraville, Georgia, and was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 26, 2001. Preceded in death by his twin brother, Kenneth Duffield. Survived by a loving mother, Margaret Houston; sister, Elaine (Clinton) Boyd; nephew, Kenneth Cardell Duffield, and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Saturday, June 30, 2001, from 11:30-12 Noon with memorial service to follow at Jarnigan and Son Mortuary Chapel. FLETCHER, KATHI JILL - age 46, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at UConn Health Center. A 1971 graduate of Karns High School. She held a Masters degree from U. T., and was a teacher in the Knox County School System. Preceded in death by mother, Wilsie Hale Fletcher, and brother, Skip Fletcher. She was a loving mother, daughter, grandmother, and friend, who will be missed dearly by all who knew her. Survived by father, Kermit Fletcher, Sr.; daughter and son-in-law, Jill Riley and husband Mohammad Alfalah, and daughters, Nancy Riley and Haley Emitt; sons, Dustin Riley and Andrew Fletcher; granddaughters, Skyelen Riley and Lakelen Alfalah, all of Knoxville. GODDARD, FRED H. - age 63, of White, Ga., passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Emory Cartersville Medical Center. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, July 1, 2001, at 2 p.m., New Salem Church, Tipton Station Road, South Knox County, Knoxville. He was born in South Knox County, Knoxville, on March 4, 1938, the son of Mary Lee Leonard Goddard and the late Gilbert (Gib) R. Goddard. He was retired from General Motors after 22 years of service. Survived by his wife, Brenda Goddard of White, Ga.; two daughters, Kim Byrd of Cartersville, Ga., Tonja Magrum of Euharlee, Ga.; three step sons, Tony, Michael and Richy Scoggins; one step daughter, Jackie Scoggins; sisters, Julia Gibson, Gracie Bruner, Hazel Smith, Gladys Johnson; brothers, Herman, G. R., Rusty, Sanford Goddard, all of Knoxville; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Burial services were held in Cartersville, Ga., June 22, 2001, at the First Baptist Church in Cartersville by the Rev. Mack Evans.

HANEY, CARL EDWARD - age 79, of 1359 Rocky Springs Road, Madisonville, passed away 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Sweetwater Hospital. Veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army. Member of Tellico Plains American Legion Post #240. Son of the late Amos and Augusta Haney. Survivors: sister, Brenda Barnes of Knoxville; brother, Larry Haney of Kodak, and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by wife, Ruby Emmitt Haney; sisters, Juanita Hooper, Mary Belle Haney, Crystal Haney; brothers, Carl Ray Haney and J. B. Haney. HINES, MARY ELLEN - of Lenoir City, passed away Thursday morning, June 28, 2001, at the Baptist Health Care Center. Mrs. Hines was born November 2, 1922, in Lenoir City, and was a devoted, lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was Valedictorian of the 1940 Class of Lenoir City High School, attended Berea College, and in 1942 began a 44 year career with TVA, during the final construction phase of Fort Loudon Dam. She cherished her TVA friends and after retirement maintained close ties with many of them. She was proud to be a Lenoir City resident all her life. She was an avid bridge player belonging to many clubs over the years; a member of the Thursday Sewing Club , and the Tuesday Club. The hardships of Depression and War helped to make her like many of this generation, an eternal optimist. This helped sustain her during a long fight with cancer, but it was the love she shared with family, the church, friends, club members, and neighbors that helped her the most. The family is deeply grateful for the support and care given her by so many people for so long. Mrs. Hines is preceded in death by her husband, Earl Harrison Hines; parents, Fred Martin Wilkerson and Anna Mae Fisher Wilkerson; brother and sister-in-law, Martin Fisher Wilkerson and Nelle Taylor Wilkerson; brother, Charles Frederick Wilkerson; sister, Emily Wilkerson Caldwell; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Fred Jones Smith and Kathleen Hines Smith. She is survived by her sons, James Harrison Hines and Walter Parker Hines, both of Lenoir City; son-in-law and daughter, James Edward Chellew and Kathleen Hines Chellew of St. Louis, Mo.; son-in-law and daughter, Victor John Przysiezny and Cynthia Ellen Hines of Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Kathleen Chellew, Amanda Ellen Chellew, Benjamin Parker Chellew of St. Louis, and Emily Diane Hines of Chicago; brother and sister-in-law, James Allen Wilkerson and Ann Boyer Wilkerson of Rock Hill, S.C., and first cousin, Betty Kate Wilkerson McCown of Lenoir City, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Hawkins Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Michael Gregory officiating. Burial will be in the Lake View cemetery.
