TAYLOR, MRS. MARY SCARBROUGH - age 89, died Wednesday morning, July 4, 2001, at her home in Petros. She was a member of the Petros Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Bill Townsend. Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Billie Ruth McGhee of Petros, Jimmie McGhee of Petros, and Ronnie and Vickie Taylor of Petros; sister, Mae Bunch of Petros; brother, Alfred Scarbrough of Wartburg; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 6, 2001, 1 p.m. at the Petros cemetery with Rev. Don Daughtery officiating. Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg, in charge of arrangements.

WRIGHT, JOHN DOCK "J.D." - age 75, of Kingston, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. Mr. Wright was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Clifford and Bessie Ellen Russell Wright; step mother, Mae Ferguson Wright; brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Armenia Eble Wright, and brother-in-law, William H. Scarbrough. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jessie Lane Wright; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Billy Long of Leesville, S.C., Debby and Skip Williams of Kingston; son and daughter-in-law, Rusty and Cindy Wright of Kingston; grandchildren, John Matthew and Sarah Caroline Wright; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary D. and George Lockett of Harriman, Betty Carol and Walter Wright of Harriman; sister, Myrtle Scarbrough of Knoxville, and step sisters and brothers-in-law, Patty and Bernie Hiskey of Brandon, Fla., and Margaret Rose and Ronnie Phillips of Ooltewah. Mr. Wright was a graduate of Poplar Springs Elementary School, Roane County High School, and Tennessee Technological University. Mr. Wright served two years in the Army Air Force, and had been employed at J. A. Jones in Oak Ridge, TVA Kingston Steam Plant, and Office Manager of Roane County ASC, Harriman Hearts Automotive, and as Owner / Operator of Wright's Farm and Town Supply in Kingston. He was retired after 20 years with Harriman City Schools as a teacher. Since retirement, Mr. Wright had continued to enjoy cattle farming. Organizations in which Mr. Wright was involved included Roane County Retired Teacher's Association, Tennessee Education Association, National Education Association, and the Gideons. Early church membership was at Bradbury Methodist Church, where Mr. Wright served as a steward. Current church membership and activities at Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church included Trustee, Music Director, Church Choir, and Chairman of the Audio Equipment Committee. Most enjoyed by Mr. Wright was his position as teacher of the Bible Sunday School Class. During early youth, Mr. Wright was involved with and enthusiastically supported Christian Music, beginning with his participation with the Shinning River Boys Quartet on Gospel Radio and in various churches. The Wright Family Gospel Singers traveled throughout the Eastern United States for 20 years ministering through music in churches and concerts. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 5, 6-8 p.m. at Kyker Funeral Home, Kingston, with funeral services at 8 p.m. Interment icon will be Friday, July 6, at Bradbury Methodist Church cemetery at 2 p.m. Pallbearers are Matthew Wright, Mike Gilliam, Craig Holloway, Bob Moore, George Lockett, David Wright, and Walt Scarbrough. Members of the Bible and Builders Sunday School Classes will be honorary friends. Pastor Ronnie Nickell will officiate. Funeral services will be at Kyker Funeral Home, Kingston. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church for the illumination of the outdoor flag.

YOUNG, FRANKIE JOE - age 37, of Greenback, passed away Tuesday evening, July 3, 2001, at Blount Memorial Hospital. Preceded in death by parents, Franklin D. and Alice Young; grandfather, Joe Rowan and grandmother, Margaret Young. Survivors: adopted mother, Brenda LeQuire of Greenback; sisters, Linda Manis and Rosa Darnell, both of Maryville; brother, Danny Young of Greenback; grandmother, Artie Rowan of Maryville, and several nieces and nephews. Special friend, Carol Ann Smith of Loudon. Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. Fred Watkins officiating. ATKINS, MR. TOLBERT N. - age 87 of 395 Wolfe Rd. Luttrell, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2001 at Sunbridge Care and Rehab. He was of the Baptist faith. Retired from Beaty Chevrolet after 26 years of service, and was an ardent farmer. Preceded in death by wife, Beulah Mendenhall-Atkins and son, Roy Marshall Atkins; brothers, Vasco, Raymond, Lester and Walter Atkins. He is survived by wife of 34 years, Wanda Longmire-Atkins; sister, Fronie Simmons of Luttrell; grandchildren, Ronald Atkins and wife, Cathy of Corryton, Steve Atkins and wife, Cyndy of Knoxville, Kathy Atkins-Thornhill and husband, Eugene of Blaine; great grandchildren, Nicole Trout of Blaine, Tonya King of Corryton, Jonathan Atkins of Puerto Rico and Christopher Atkins of Luttrell; 4 great-great grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. Carolyn Bell became a Christian at age 11, and attended Arlington Baptist Church. Survived by her husband of 32 years, Alfred B. Bell; daughter, Rebecca Ann Bell of Knoxville; brothers and sisters, Ray Thompson and sister-in-law, Glenda Thompson of Knoxville, Lucille Thompson Cox of Titusville, Florida, Mary Thompson Coffman and brother-in-law, Carter Coffman of Luttrell, Imogene Staley and brother-in-law, Elmer Staley of Luttrell, Eddie Thompson and sister-in-law, Amy Thompson of Luttrell; parents-in-law, A. B. and Joyce Bell of Powell; brother-in-law, David Bell of Powell, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Edward Thompson and Vena Tindell Thompson of Luttrell. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Arlington Baptist Church, Saturday, July 7, at 7 p.m. with visitation with the family to follow. CLAIBORNE, MARGIE R. - age 79 of Maryville died Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Broadway Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Jesse Claiborne; son, Ron Claiborne. Survivors include son, Roger Murray Claiborne of Maryville; daughter, Ronda M. Burg of Titusville, Fla.; grandson, Shane Claiborne; several brothers and sisters. CREAGER, MICHAEL HOWARD - age 45, of Kodak, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001. He was a member of Kodak United Methodist Church and was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, gardener and woodcrafter. He was preceded in death by his father, Mickey Creager. Survivors: wife of 16 years, Beatrice Creager; son, Andy Creager; daughter, Christy Creager; mother, Helen U. Creager; brother, Tim Creager; sister, Lynn Butler; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles; sister-in-law, Darlene Lasley. Funeral service 7 p.m. Friday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Troy Duncan officiating. CROWELL, LANIE ANN - age 30, of Knoxville, died suddenly on Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. She was a graduate of Maryville College. Preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Harrison O. Bourkard of Knoxville, and her uncle, Robert Hal Crowell, Jr., of Franklin, Tennessee. Survivors are her parents, Michael Dee and Lynn Crowell of Knoxville; sister and brother-in-law, Kelly and Bruce E. Carillon, Jr.; paternal grandparents, Hal Crowell, Sr. and Naomi of Franklin, Tennessee; niece, Mary Chandler Carillon; nephew, Michael B. Carillon; aunts and uncles, Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Moore of Columbia, Tennessee, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen W. DAVIS, CHARLES EDWARD - age 62, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2001. He was the Brother of Lucille Davis Smith. Family and friends will meet at Graveston cemetery 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, for Graveside Service with Danny Bayles officiating. Arrangements by Mynatt's.

DOUGHERTY, ALBERT - age 96, of Knoxville, died Thursday, July 5, 2001. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, and a longtime respected member of the Rotary Club. Survivors: daughter, Colin E. Dougherty of Knoxville, and several nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Highland Memorial cemetery with Rev. Alex Barron officiating. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Tennessee, Box 9479, Knoxville, TN 37940, or to St. Mary's Residential Hospice, 7447 Andersonville Pike, Knoxville, TN 37933. DAVIS, MR. LUTHER D., JR. - age 73, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday July 3, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Davis was a member of Glen Oak Baptist Church and preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Nancy Vaughn Davis, and brother, Homer Davis. Survivors: daughter, Patricia Urbina; grandchildren, Krista and Phillip Davis all of Charlotte, NC; brothers and sisters in law, Hurdle and Gay Davis, Clester and Ruth Davis all of Knoxville; sister, Vernie Walker of Dandridge; sister and brother in law, Nettie and Ruie Raby of Mt. Airie, Md. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Green's Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Grindstaff officiating. The family and friends will meet at the church at 2:30 p.m.

ELMORE, WILLIAM FRANK - age 80, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at his home. Member of Bible Church of God. Preceded in death by wife, Mary Elmore. Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Malcolm Neely of Lenoir City; sons, David and Walter Elmore both of Knoxville; grandchildren, Malcolm Jr. and Celena Neely, Teresa Dyer, Sandy Stooksbury, and Wally Elmore, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday at Stevens Chapel with Rev. Pappy Beaver and Rev. Bobby Kelly officiating. Interment icon to follow at Roseberry cemetery. FLOYD, ALBERTA GROSS - formerly of Andersonville, passed away Friday, June 1, 2001 in Sapulpa, Okla. at the age of 91. She was born October 10, 1909 to Thomas J. and Minnie C. Gross in Anderson County, Tenn. She was a descendent of the East Tennessee pioneer family of Henry Massengill and her father was a prominent pharmacist, minister, teacher and state legislator in Lake City and Oliver Springs, Tenn. After living most of her life in her beloved Smokey Mountains, she and her husband relocated to Okla. in 1982 to be near her daughter and son in law. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Roy L. Floyd and eight brothers and sisters. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Yarborough and husband, Gene of Sapula, Okla.; niece, and adopted daughter, Polly McRae and husband, Bill of Duluth, Ga. and Lake Junaluska, NC; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and two great-great grandsons; a brother, Paul Gross of Bristol, Tenn.; a sister, Barbara Carmack of Abingdon, Va.; a brother and sisters in law and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be laid to rest with a celebration of her life at 2 p.m. Saturday July 14, Lynnhurst cemetery, Knoxville, Tenn. The family asks that friends make donations to the Memorial Fund at First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 29, Sapula, Okla. 74067.

Preceded in death by husband, Jake Glenn, Sr.; parents, Jim and Dona Scott; grandson, Tommy Glenn; great granddaughters, Kelsey and Kailey Lambdin; brothers, Tom and David Scott; sister, Violet Compton. HUFFAKER, JAMES WARNER (PAPAW) - age 80, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at the University of Tennessee Hospital. He was a faithful member of the Lakeview Missionary Baptist Church on Fox Rd. in Knoxville. Member of Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 5 Union and a World War II Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Huffaker and Laura Huffaker Rutledge. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Margaret Lane Huffaker; sons, James Raymond and wife Rosemary Huffaker, Jack and Joyce Huffaker, John and Glenda Huffaker, and Glen Huffaker, all of Knoxville, Jessie Huffaker of Sevierville; daughter, Edna Kate Bohanan of Sevierville; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, also a special cousin and friend, Millard Floyd. Interment icon will be at the Tennessee Veterans cemetery on Northshore Drive on Monday, July 9, 2001 at 12 noon. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 11:45 on Monday.
