SCOTT, BERNICE FARLEY - age 87, formerly of Spring City, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Fort Sanders Hospital. Born in Brighton, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late J. M. and Ella Cotton Farley. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Victor Costa and second husband, J. D. "Pete" Scott, and her brother, Carl Farley. Survivors include two sisters, Stella Morris of Knoxville, and Irma Lee Cheek of Crossville, and nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be Thursday, 2:30 p.m. in the Spring City cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Arrangements are by Vaughn Funeral Home, Spring City, Tenn.

SMART, HORACE T., SR. - age 54, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, July 9, 2001. A member of Trinity Chapel Church. Preceded in death by wife, Janice Smart; parents, Harvey and Margaret Smart. Survivors: sons, Horace T. Smart, Jr. and wife Marsha, Jordan Samuel Smart, Michael J. D. Smart, Jonathan Smart and Doogie Smart; grandchildren, Haley and Candace Smart and Dustin Perry; sister and brother-in-law, Nellie and Roger Bryant; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Pat Smart, Gene and Dulcie Smart, Jerry and Kathy Smart; brothers, Ronnie and Jim Smart. Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Greenwood cemetery for a graveside service with Pastor Jim Greer officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Mynatt's.

TAYLOR, FRANK - age 82, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, July 9, 2001, at his home. He was a member of Branville Baptist Church and was retired from ASARCO. Survivors: wife, Martina Provenza Taylor; daughter, Janice Bevins; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Danny Lane, all of Knoxville; grandchildren, Chris and Jamie Bevins of Jonesboro, Stacy Bevins, Jeffrey Bevins, Matthew Lane, and Sarah Lane; brother, R. B. Taylor, all of Knoxville, and Betty Miller of Gainesville, Fla. Funeral service 8 p.m. Wednesday, Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel with Rev. Charles Parker and Rev. Rick Walsh officiating. Family and friends will meet at the main entrance to Greenwood cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Thursday for interment icon at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

WASHINGTON, BEATRICE TURMAN - of Wilson Rd., Knoxville, formerly of Ashland Ave., entered into eternal rest, Saturday, July 7, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital. Preceded in death by parents, George and Mary Washington. A member of College Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church and a former member of Payne Ave. Baptist Church. Employed by UT Bettell and worked part time for Dr. Bizers Vision World (Knoxville Center) and was retired from TVA. Survivors: children, Angelia and Randall Turman; three grandchildren; one half brother and great aunt, Robena Mackie; aunts, Martha Gilchrist and Daisy Gilchrist, and many devoted cousins and many friends to include the College Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church family, and former husbands, Harvey Turman and Larry Jones. The family will receive friends 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday at College Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m., Pastor Vincent White officiating. Interment icon in Highland South (Holly Hills) Memorial Park. The family will assemble at the home of Harvey Turman, 3121 Selma Ave. Arrangements by Jarnigan & Son Mortuary.

WHALEY, EASTER LIDAV - age 77, of Sevierville, went to be with our Lord and Savior Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at 1:05 a.m., after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded with love by her family as she left this earthly home to go to her heavenly home. She was a member of Burnetts Creek Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her son, David Whaley; daughter, Marion Branch; mother, Ella Mae McCarter; father, James Henry McCarter, and eight brothers and sisters. Left to cherish the memories are her husband of 57 years, Marion Buford Whaley; son, Steve Whaley and family of Belleview, Fla.; daughter, Loretta "Suzie" Rudder and family of Knoxville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, and five sisters. A special thanks to Hospice of Baptist Hospital and all those who supported her during her illness. "Our loss is Heaven's gain." Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 13, in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Interment icon will follow in Huskey's cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.

WHITE, LOTTIE C. - age 92, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2001. Member of Valley Grove Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Otis M. White. Survivors: children, Betty Collins and husband Mike, and David White and wife Margaret; grandchildren, Kimberly Haynes, D. Shannon White, Kevin D. Collins, Rev. Gary M. Collins, and Brent Collins; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Mynatt and Dr. Bobby Tucker officiating. Interment icon in Valley Grove cemetery. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy.

Joseph Moffitt Goodson

Graveside services for Joseph Moffitt Goodson, 53, vice president of Goodson Brothers Coffee Co. will be at 9:45 a.m. today at Highland Memorial cemetery with a memorial service at 11 a.m. at St. John's Cathedral.

Family members said Mr. Goodson suffered a heart attack at his home after going to bed last Friday evening.

The Goodson family got into the coffee business nearly 100 years ago and became known for its JFG brand.

The JFG Coffee Co. was sold to a New Orleans company in 1965.

Goodson Brothers Coffee Co. was formed a few years later, and manufactures coffee for private labels and for large corporations.

It also has a small gourmet coffee business.

Mr. Goodson leaves his sons, Ross Moffitt Goodson and Stephen Kroog Goodson; daughters Barbara Elizabeth Goodson and Aleise Stanwood Goodson; mother, Sarah Moffitt Goodson; brother James F. (Jeff) Goodson, all of Knoxville.

APPLEGATE, LISA RENEE - age 33, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2001. She was a member of Faithway Baptist Church, and employed as an Insurance Agent with Insurance Service Group. Preceded in death by mother, Linda Faye Beets; grandfather, Eugene Beets, Sr. Survivors: children, Ashley, Bo and Brian Dake; father, Eugene Beets, Jr.; grandmothers, Marie Barker and Anna Beets; sister, Stephanie Roach; brother, Steven Beets; two nieces and two nephews; several aunts, uncles and friends. Funeral services 2 p.m. Friday, Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel with Rev. Rick Passmore officiating. Interment icon in Highland Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

BOWMAN, GEORGE L. - age 89, of Lenoir City, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at the Park West Hospital. George was a member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City for 76 years, where he served as usher and secretary of the Sunday School Department. A retired Post Master of the Lenoir City Post Office. Until his death, he had been a 21 year employee of Click Funeral Home, since his retirement. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army in Italy. George was a former member of the Lenoir City Civitan Club, and the American Legion. Preceded in death by his wife, Pauline (Polly) Pickell Bowman; parents, Thomas L. and Nancy Bowman; sister, Myrtle Bowman Bowden; brother, Elmer Bowman; nephews, Allan Lester Bowman and Charles Robert (Bob) Porter. Survived by sister, Viola Bowman Porter of Lenoir City; nephews, M. B. (Bud) Bowden and wife Shirley of Farragut, George Bowden and wife Jane Bowden of Jacksonville, Fla., and several other nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. George also leaves behind many special friends. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 p.m. Thursday with funeral services to follow at 8 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Redmond and Rev. Dick DeMerchant officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Click Funeral Home and proceed to the Lenoir City cemetery for graveside services at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jack Jackson officiating. Military Honors will be conferred by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, George had requested that memorials be made to Faith to Victory, First Baptist Church, 2085 Simpson Road East, Lenoir City, TN 37772. DAVIS, MARGIE DEAN WALLACE - age 70, of Clinton, passed away Tuesday night, July 10, 2001, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was a loving mother and wonderful grandmother. She was a member of South Clinton Baptist Church. She was also an active member of the South Clinton Home Demonstration Club. She enjoyed collecting and viewing antiques, crafts and flowers. Preceded in death by husband, Robert Vernon Davis; son, Walter Lynn Davis; parents, William "Bill" and Seffie Spessard Wallace. Margie was born October 30, 1930, in Anderson County. Survivors: daughter, Angela Poe and husband, Rev. Phil Poe of Clinton; son, Kimble Davis and wife, Cindy of Lenoir City; granddaughters, Kimberly Davis Harrell and husband, Dallas of Clinton, Allison and Leah Davis of Lenoir City, and Janae Poe of Clinton; grandson, Nathan Poe of Clinton; great-granddaughter, Sedona Harrell of Clinton; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with funeral service following at 8 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Terry Steil, Sr. officiating. Interment icon will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, of Clinton, in charge.

FOURNET, TERESE - age 93, of White Plains, New York, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 11, 2001, in Farragut, Tennessee, where she had moved to be close to her family. Terese was of the Catholic faith. She was retired from Readers Digest in Pleasantville, New York, with 35 years of service. Terese was active in Republican Party Politics in West Chester County, and an Alderman for the City Board of White Plains. She was a life-long member of the White Plains Woman's Club. Terese was the daughter of Henri D. Fournet, Sr., and Jane McManus Fournet. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Adele M. Storch, Gertrude Fournet; brother, Henri D. Fournet, Jr.; nephew, Wallace G. Storch, Jr. She is survived by her great nieces, Mrs. Fournet Sheehan of Farragut, Tenn., Mrs. Jane LaBorde of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; great nephews, Wallace G. Storch III of Manheim, Penn., John N. Storch of Lancaster, Penn., and Michael D. Storch of Clearwater, Fla., and ten great-great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Sunday at McMahon Lyon and Harnett Funeral Home, 491 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, N.Y. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the McMahon Chapel with Father Quinn officiating. Interment icon will be in the Gates of Heaven cemetery. Honorary pallbearers: John Storch, Wallace Storch, Tom Sheehan, and Tommy Sheehan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. GRISSOM, JAMES THOMAS - passed away Monday, July 9, 2001, in Florida. He is survived by his aunt, Hazel E. North and many cousins. His body was cremated. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001, in Fox cemetery. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.

HAYS, STEPHEN WESLEY - age 52, passed away Monday, July 9, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. Preceded in death by parents, Clifford T. and Ruth Hutson Hays. Survivors: wife of 30 years, Brenda Langston Hays; son, Christopher Todd Hays; daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Anthony Reynolds; grandsons, Caleb and Christian; sister and brother-in-law, Martie and Bill Crowe; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends and family are invited to visit at the home, 3220 Shellbark Drive, Powell, from 6-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday evening. The family invites all who knew and loved Steve to join them in a celebration of his life at a memorial service and covered dish luncheon at Camp Ba-Yo-Ca, Sevierville, Tenn., at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001.
