Mary Ellen Sikes, age 88, #4 Steven Court, died Thursday, August 16, 2001 in Appalachian Church Village following a lengthy illness. A native of Roswell, New Mexico, Mrs. Sikes was the daughter of the late Charles Lee Ray and Cora Barnett Colby. Mrs. Sikes was a retired register nurse from the James Quillen Medical Center Hospital where she worked for 32 years. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Memphis. Mrs. Sikes was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Her husband, Henry M. Sikes, preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Cate of Johnson City; two grandsons, Steven Cate and David Cate both of Johnson City; one granddaughter, Susan Cate of Johnson City.

Funeral services for Mary Ellen Sikes, age 88, #4 Steven Circle, who died Thursday at Appalachian Christian Village will be held Monday, August 20, 2001, at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Bill Gahagan officiating. Graveside services will follow in Mountain Home National cemetery with Father Gahagan and Rev. Dwight Kilbourne officiating. Pallbearers who are asked to meet at the church Monday by 10:45 AM will be the Knights of Columbus. Charles Edward "Ed" Martin
Clinton, TN-Charles Edward "Ed" Martin, age 84, 762 Glendale Road, Jonesborough, died Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at his daughters residence.
Mr. Martin was a native of Hawkins County, TN and a lifelong resident of Washington County. He was a son of the late Charles Edward and Mary Gardner Martin. He retired in 1980 from Tennessee Eastman Company where he was a Shipping Clerk for more than 30 years. Mr. Martin was a member, former deacon and former Sunday School teacher at Boones Creek Christian Church.
He was a member of Sinking Creek Masonic Lodge #575, 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, York Rite. He was a member of the Jericho Shrine and the Johnson Lodge Eastern Star. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Martin. Survivors include his wife, Marian Isom Martin, of the home; two daughters, Beverly Alvis, Clinton, Karen Stykes, Jonesborough; three brothers, Ralph Martin, Jonesborough, D.C. Martin, Johnson City, Walter Martin, Gray; four sisters, Pearl Saylor, Minnie Belle Sanders, Beulah Barker, all of Gray, and Geri Collins, Jonesborough; five grandchildren, Rebecca Alvis, Charles, Alvis, Jesse Alvis, all of Clinton, John Alvis, Claxton, Bart Stykes, Jonesborough; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Ryan Letcher, age 75, 1012 E. Myrtle Avenue, Johnson City died Monday, August 6, 2001 at her residence following a brief illness.
Mrs. Letcher was a native of Jonesborough, TN, and had lived in Abingdon, VA, and Dante, Virginia before returning to Johnson City where she has lived for the past 36 years. She is the daughter of the late Jake and Willie Mae McCollum Ryan. Mrs. Letcher was a homemaker. She was a member of Longs Chapel AME Zion, Dante, Virginia. Mrs. Lecther was preceded in death by her husband, William Letcher in 1996. Survivors include three sons, William Letcher, Gregory Letcher and Stephen Letcher, all of Johnson City; one daughter, Linda Charles, Johnson City; three brothers, Hiawatha Ryan, Johnson City, John Ryan, Eurca, CA and Charles Ryan, Oakland, CA; four sisters, Patricia Horton, Oakland, CA, Mara R. Mrs. Elizabeth Nobles Larson
Mrs. Elizabeth Nobles Larson, 1807 Fairway Drive, Johnson City, Tennessee died Thursday, August 2, 2001 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness. A native of Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, Mrs. Larson is a daughter of the late Howard E. and Maude Mitchell Nobles. Mrs. Larson was a retired social worker from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. While at the Veterans Administration she served as mentor and role model for numerous graduate students in their field placement. A graduate of Louisiana Tech University, she was a pioneer in the early welfare programs in the south. Mrs. Larson received a Master's Degree in Social Work from Louisiana State University. Mrs. Larson belonged to a number of professional and civic organizations. She was named the Louis H. Gump Volunteer of the Year for 1984-85 for dedicated service to the East Tennessee Hospice. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church where she had taught the Fidelis Sunday School for 25 years and had served on several committees' and boards of Central Baptist Church. Her husband, Clarence N. Larson in 1955; one son, Andrew Martin Larson who died in 1968 in Vietnam; one sister, Nelda Nobles Brooks and one brother, Howard E. Nobles, preceded her in death. Survivors include one niece, Sally Brooks Meadows of Washington, D.C.; two nephews, Dr. John M. Brooks Jr. of Greenville, Mississippi and Howard Nobles of New Orleans, Louisiana; several great nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Callie Adkins, age 92, 2428 Stone Drive, died Friday, July 6, 2001 at Heritage Hall, Grundy, Virginia following a lengthy illness. A native of Erwin, Mrs. Adkins was a daughter of the late John and Mary Blankenship Long. Mrs. Adkins was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith. The husband, Sam W. Adkins in 1983 and by three brothers and two sisters, preceded Mrs. Adkins in death. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Jo Harris of Marion, Indiana; two sons, John Adkins of Johnson City and Ricky Adkins of Marion, Indiana; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. A native of Easley, South Carolina, Mrs. Deanhardt was a daughter of the late James Marvin and Annie Wood Couch. Mrs. Deanlardt was a homemaker. She was a member of the Clark Street Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class. An infant son, Archie and one sister, Helen Johnson, preceded her in death. Michael Watkins, 55, 208 W. Watauga Ave. #3, Johnson City, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Mr. Watkins was a native of Hazard, KY, and has been a resident of Johnson City since 1954. He was the son of the late W. Thomas and Alma Wells Watkins.
Mr. Watkins was a Vietnam Navy veteran. He was a graduate of Science Hill High School and attended East Tennessee State University. Survivors include one daughter, Lori Weatherly, Fairhope, AL; one grandson, Ethan Weatherly, Fairhope; one aunt, Mae Caskey, Morrow, OH; two uncles, James Wells, St. Louis, MO, Joe Wells, Ft. Donnie W. Marshall (Mrs. A.L.), age 97, 400 N. Boone St., formerly of 613 W. Poplar Street, died Saturday June 9, 2001 in the Asbury Center following a brief illness. She was a Kimball, W. Virginia native and a daughter of the late Henry Aubrey and Sallie Evans Weaver. Mrs. Marshall was a teacher at the New London Academy in Forest, Virginia for several years, and was a homemaker after marriage. She attended Virginia Intermont, Radford College and James Madison College. She was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church for over seventy years and was active in the church and the Girl Scouts as a volunteer Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by her husband, Atwell Marshall in 1995, and one sister, Hettie Weaver Kidd. Survivors include her daughter, Annette Marshall Miller,Kingsport; one sister, Norma Jean Spencer, Newport News, VA; three granddaughters, Gail Miller Eldridge, Kingsport, Suzanne Miller Elsea, Norcross, GA, Sarah Leigh Miller Morelock, Johnson City; three great grandchildren; one great-great grandson.

Mary Sue Mallonee Kirk, 86, died June 9, 2001 in Jacksonville, FL, following a lengthy illness. A Kingsport native, she had lived in Jacksonville since 1977 and was a daughter of the late George M. and Nova Long Mallonee. Mrs. Kirk was a member of San Jose Catholic Church IN in Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy C. Kirk and one son, Guy C. Kirk, Jr.
Survivors include one son, George L. Kirk, Jacksonville, FL., one sister, Madeline Clark, Tampa, FL, seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are incomplete.

Grace Margaret Pendergrass Bradford, age 80, 2012 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City died Wednesday, June 6, 2001 in the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. Mrs. Bradford was a Marshall County, Alabama native and a daughter of the late John W. and Wincie Angeline Ennis Pendergrass.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Bradford was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivors are one daughter, Linda Barber, Gray; two sons, Bill Bradford, Johnson City and Bob Bradford, Boone, NC; two brothers; two sisters; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. John Fulton Miller
John Fulton Miller, 91, formerly of Colonial Hill Retirement Center, Johnson City, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at NHC Health Care Center, following a brief illness. Mr. Miller was a native of New Market, TN and had been a resident of Johnson City since the 1920's. He was a son of the late Frank M. and Martha G. Miller. Mr. Miller was associated with Miller's Grocery of Johnson City, and retired from Frank's Food Company of Kingsport. He was a member of Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church. Mr. Miller was a World War II Army veteran and served in the European Theater as a 1st Lieutenant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred E. Miller, in May of 2000, four brothers, H.V. Miller, Claud Miller, Charles Miller and Odell Miller; two sisters, Jessie Morrell and Dorothy Davis. Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Leonard, Piney Flats; two grandsons, Jeff Leonard and Gary Leonard, both of Johnson City; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jessica Leonard, Johnson City; one niece, several nephews. Hansel "Mac" McElyea, age 73, 1104 Claiborne Street, died Friday, May 25, 2001 at his residence following a brief illness. A native of Lee County, Virginia, Mr. McElyea had lived in Johnson City for many years. Mr. McElyea was a retired Civil Service employee from the State of Maryland. He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy. He was of the Seventh Day Adventist Faith. There are no known survivors. Mrs. Shirley Virginia Tate, age 73, 3200 Knob Creek Road, Gray, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at her residence following a lengthy illness. A Johnson City native, Mrs. Tate was a daughter of the late William and Cora Kate Williams Cox. Mrs. Tate was a retired nurse. She also was a clinical instructor at Draughons Junior College. She was a member of Landmark Baptist Temple. Mrs. Tate also served as a volunteer at North Side Hospital. In addition to her parents, a daughter, Elizabeth Bond preceded her in death in 1997. Survivors include her husband, John B. Tate of the home; one daughter, Judy T. Clyburn, of Gray; one sister, Betty J. Morrison of Johnson City; three grandchildren, Evan Douglas Clyburn, Emily Kate Radford and John Karl Bond; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Kathleen Radford of Gray and Karla Jane Bond of Bonneau, South Carolina.
