Reid S. Wilson, 74, 137 Snyder Road, Gray, Tn, retired pastor of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church, died Sunday morning, March 24, at NHC Healthcare in Johnson City,TN. Immediate survivors include his wife, Marjorie Wilson, of the home; four daughters, Kathie Wilson-Parker, Independence, VA., Betsy McKeeby, Lake Mary, FL. and Donna Moores, St. Paul, MN. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00-8:00PM in the funeral home chapel and Tuesday from 12:30-2:00PM at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church.

James C. Barnes
James C. Barnes, age 83, North Johnson City, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in the Boones Creek community of Washington County, Mr. Barnes was a son of the late Jacob and Lillie Maude Murray Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a retired employee of Tennessee Eastman. He was a member of the Boones Creek Christian Church. Two brothers and five sisters preceded Mr. Barnes in death. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Cress Barnes of the home; two daughters, Teresa D. Barnes-Hinton of Scottbridge, Georgia and Janis S. Barnes- Skidmore of Fishers, Indiana; three sisters, Kate Gentry of Johnson City, Christine Crowe of Jonesborough and Muriel Bradley of Johnson City; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Minnie Hopson, age 76, 512 Pardee Street, Johnson City died Monday, March 18, 2002 in Lakebridge Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Hopson was a native of Chuckey, TN and a lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late W.A. and Rhoda E. Misamore Chapell. Mrs. Hopson was a retired waitress. She was preceded by her husband, James Paul Hopson in 1975; one brother, Arlie Chapell; two sisters, Marie Bailey, Ruth Blake. Jeff Leonard
Jeffrey Alan Leonard, 40, Johnson City, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Leonard was a Johnson City native, grew up in Piney flats, and lived most of his adult life in Johnson City. He was a son of William Carroll and Sandra Miller Leonard, Piney Flats. Mr. Leonard was employed as a paramedic in the emergency room at Indian Path Medical Center, Kingsport. He was formerly employed with the Sullivan County EMS for 12 years as a paramedic and also served as a field training officer as well as a quality assurance coordinator. Mr. Leonard was a former volunteer Rescue Squad member in Bluff City for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Kingsport Life Saving Crew and had served on the faculty at Northeast State Community College, Blountville, where he taught as an EMS instructor. Mr. Leonard was a 1979 graduate of Sullivan East High School and had attended E.T.S.U. He was a member of New Bethel Presbyterian Church, Piney Flats. Mr. Leonard served on the Program Committee of the Board of Directors of the Holston Presbytery Camp and Retreat Center, Banner Elk, NC, and was instrumental in establishing the High Adventure Program and the Camp for Diabetic Children. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Summers Lyle and Myra Belle Leonard, and his maternal grandparents, John F. and Mildred E. Miller. Mrs. Brown was a native of Augusta County, Virginia and had been a resident of Johnson City for 35 years. She was a daughter of the late Marion and Josie Phillippe Phillippe. Jack C. Gordon
Jack C. Gordon, age 47, Johnson City, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002. Mr. Gordon was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was a son of Charles O. Gordon, Sr., and Evelyn Anderson Gordon, Johnson City. Mr. Gordon was president of Bydand Corporation, Johnson City, Tri-City Beverage, Johnson City and Peace River Citris Groves, Zolfo Springs, Fl. He was the former Vice-President and Controller of Gordon's Incorporated. Mr. Gordon graduated in 1972 from Science Hill High School. In 1977 received his B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. He received his Masters Degree in Business in 1979 at Virginia Tech where he was a member of the German Club. Mr. Gordon was a former member of the Salvation Army Board of Directors, the Johnson City Lions Club and a member of the Herstleigh Club. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. Milton E. "Coach" Barnes
Milton E. "Coach" Barnes, age 57, 343 Dean Archer Road, Jonesborough died, Monday, March 11, 2002 in Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Barnes was a native of Washington County and a resident of Johnson City for most of his adult life. He was a son of J.W. and Verna Mae Copas Barnes, who reside in Fall Branch. Coach Barnes was a teacher and coach in the Johnson City School System for 32 years. He taught Physical Education and coached Track and Basketball at Liberty Bell and also taught at Fairmont Elementary and Towne Acres Elementary before retiring from Woodland Elementary. Mr. Barnes received his B.S. Degree in Education from East Tennessee State University in 1967. He was a member of Boone Trail Baptist Church and the Christian Friends Sunday School Class. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by one sister, Jean McNeeley. Florence Sue Hobbs, age 78, 3087 Knob Creek Road, Gray, died Monday, March 4, 2002 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. A native and life long resident of Washington County, Mrs. Hobbs was a daughter of the late R.B. and Myrtle Leonard Clark. Mrs. Hobbs was a homemaker. Col. Nathan S. Hale
Col. Nathan S. Hale, age 74, 196 Bayless Road, Jonesborough, died Sunday, March 3, 2002 at his residence. Col. Hale was a native of Fleming, Kentucky and a son of the late Robert I. and Bernice C. Hale. Col. Hale received his undergraduate degree from Milligan College and his Master's Degree from East Tennessee State University and completed work from the University of Tennessee. He was principle of Sulphur Springs High School from 1957-1971. Col. Hale was principle of Daniel Boone High School from 1971 until 1980. He was Superintendent of Washington County Schools from 1980 until 1984. He was elected to the Washington County Board of Education in 1986 and served as chairman from 1992 until 1994. Col Hale was a decorated Korean War veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952-1983 and retired with the rank of full-bird Colonel. Col. Hale was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. He was a member of the American Heart Association, Masonic Lodge, Shriner's, VFW, American Legion and lifetime member of Marine Corps Reserve Officers Association and Retired Officers Association. Col. Hale was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Hale, two brothers, John Hale and Benjamin Hale; one sister, Roberta English. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor C. Knoxville, TN- Irene Giles, age 80, 1301 Green Court, Sevierville, died Thursday, February 28, 2002 at Baptist Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Giles was a native of Dickinson County, Virginia and had been a resident of Johnson City for most of her life before moving to Sevierville in the late 1980's. She was the daughter of the late Morgan and Mary Fuller Duty. Mrs. Giles was a homemaker. She was a Baptist. Mrs. Giles was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Giles, Jr. in 1993. Coach Julian D. Crocker
Coach Julian D. Crocker, Sr., age 93, 2018 Sherwood Drive, No. 201, Johnson City, TN died Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Coach Crocker was a native of Camden, TN and had lived in Nashville and the Middle Tennessee area before moving to Johnson City in 1948. He was a son of the late John Dorsey and Mary Theodocia Wyly Crocker. Coach Crocker graduated in 1927 from Central High School, Nashville where he was president of the student body. He received his B.S. Degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1931 where he served as class president and was captain of the football team. He received his Master's Degree from Peabody University in 1939. He was an instructor at the Columbia Military Academy from 1939 until 1944. He served as Athletic Specialist U.S. Navy V-12 College Training Program during World War II. Coach Crocker was football and basketball coach in the Middle Tennessee High Schools prior to joining the faculty of East Tennessee State College in 1948, where he was Professor of Physical Education, Head Track Coach and Assistant Football Coach. He retired in 1973 after 37 years of teaching and coaching in Tennessee schools. Coach Crocker served as a member of a coaching committee that organized and directed Football Coaching clinics, that became a forerunner of the TSSAA sponsored clinics in later years. He was inducted into the ETSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985, and also into the Middle Tennessee State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. Coach Crocker organized and directed the First Fellowship of Christian Athletes program in the Tri-City area. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church since 1948, where he was a member of the S.C. Williams Sunday School class and had served on the administrative board, Board of Trustees and Recreation Committee in past years. Coach Crocker was preceded in death by his wife of more than 65 years, Mary Harrison Crocker in 1997; two brothers, John Thomas Crocker and Lindell Crocker; one grandson, Kevin Maxwell Crocker, (1976-1996). Survivors include his son, Dr. Julian Doss Crocker, Jr., and his wife, Donna Gilliss Crocker, both of Templeton, CA; three grandchildren, Kelly Crocker, San Francisco, Karen Crocker Snell, Boston, MA and Kameron Doss Crocker, Arcata, CA; several nieces and nephews. Ethelyn Lockett Cox
Ethelyn Lockett Cox, age 93, Colonial Hill Retirement Center, 3207 Bristol Hwy, Johnson City, died Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. Mrs. Cox was a native of Bristol, VA and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1909. She was a daughter of the late Emmett Cornelieus and Hattie Jane Kidd Lockett. Mrs. Cox graduated from Science Hill High School in 1925 and graduated from East Tennessee Teacher's Normal School (ETSU) in 1929. She taught English and French in Magnolia, North Carolina and Fort Smith, Arkansas also taught one year at Science Hill High School. She was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 80 years where she helped organize the Bertha Range Circle and served on the Alter Guild. Mrs. Cox was a member of the Merry Wives and was a member and Past President of The Book Club. She was a charter member of the Better Homes and Garden Club. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, J. Lafe Cox in 1960; her daughter, Linda Lee Cox Haynes; sisters, Mary Lockett Wagner and Pearl Lockett Kimbrough; brothers, Fred R. Lockett, Sr., and Floyd "Buck" Lockett, Sr. She is survived by one son, Jack L. Robert William Leach
Robert William Leach, age 55, 525 Summitt Drive, Jonesborough, died Friday, February 22, 2002 at his residence following a lengthy illness. A native of Johnson City, Mr. Leach was a son of Georgia Ruth Snodgrass Leach and the late Roy Watson Leach who died in 1981. Mr. Leach was employed at East Tennessee State University where he was computer co-coordinator in the Information Technology Department. He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Leach was a member of the East Unaka Christian Church. Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Ruth Ann Guinn Leach of the home; two sons, Scott Douglas Leach of Jacksonville, Florida and Brett Larimer of Unicoi; one daughter, Jennifer Renee Finch of Henderson, North Carolina; one brother, Ed Leach of Johnson City; one sister, Judy Ann Leach Kelly of Kingsport; seven grandchildren. Martha Cross Lacy, age 89, formerly of 2101 Christian Lane, Johnson City, died Friday, February 22, 2002. Mrs. Lacy was a native of Sullivan County and a lifelong resident of the Johnson City area. She was a daughter of the late Rice H. and Nancy Mottern Cross. Mrs. Lacy was a graduate of Milligan College and a former School Teacher in Sullivan County. She also served as a field representative for Milligan College. Mrs. Lacy was a faithful member of Poplar Ridge Christian Church of Sullivan County and the First Christian Church in Johnson City for 75 years. She was a member of the Loyal Women's Sunday School Class. She was active in many church and civic affairs. Mrs. Lacy was preceded in death by her husband, Steve B. Lacy in 2000; two brothers, Olin Cross and Rice H. Cross, Jr.; two sisters, Marjorie Ralph and Dorothy Torbett. Vaniece Rowland Brumit, 84, of 2716 Fort Henry Drive, Kingsport, died Thursday, February 7, 2002, at the SunBridge Care - Hillside Center in Kingsport. Mrs. Brumit was a native of Yancey County, North Carolina, a former resident of Johnson City and had lived in Kingsport since 1950. She was a daughter of the late George Arthur and Texas Hensley Rowland. Mrs. Brumit was a homemaker. She was a member of the Litz Manor Baptist Church. Mrs. Brumit was preceded in death by her husband David D. Brumit in 1988 and one sister, Bernice Rowland and four brothers, Powan Rowland, Aulden Rowland, Weland Rowland and John A. Rowland. Emmogene King Adorante
Emmogene King Adorante, age 78, Durham-Hensley Nursing Home, Chuckey, died Friday, February 1, 2002 at her residence following a lengthy illness. A Johnson City native, Ms. Adorante was a daughter of the late Conley Trigg King, Sr. and Lilly Mae Stepp King. Well known in Johnson City and surrounding areas in the banking industry, Ms. Adorante retired as Vice-President of Home Federal Savings and Loan where she worked for 30 years. Prior to joining Home Federal, she worked in the office of Price Administration during WWII. Ms. Adorante was active in civic affairs, having served as officer in the youth and family unit of the Virginia police department and was a member of the National Associaton of Insurance Women. She was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and was secretary of the Builders Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Louise King, Gordon Teilman, Cleo Jory, Vera Mae King and Mary Wilma King. Survivors include three sons, Michael Adorante, Kansas City, KS, Joseph L. Adorante, Afton, John Adorante, Knoxville; one brother, Conley Trigg King, Jr., Richmond, VA, two sisters, Vivien Ely, Richmond, VA and Betty Pickel, Memphis, two grandsons and four granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.
