Glen Edward Onks

A longtime Johnson City business owner, Glen Edward Onks, age 75, 2427 Huffine Circle, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness. A Washington County native, Mr. Onks was a son of the late Raymond and Lela Walters Onks. Mr. Onks was the owner of Paint and Lacquer Supplies in Johnson City for 37 years. A veteran, Mr. Onks served in the United States Navy. He was a former member of the Johnson City Jaycees and past board member of Appalachian Christian Village. Mr. Onks was a member of Walnut Christian Church where he was an elder and past Chairman of the Board at Walnut Christian Church. Two brothers, Clifford Onks and Billy Joe Onks preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Onks of the home; one son, Gary W. Onks of Johnson City; one daughter, Carol Pierce of Johnson City; three sisters, Louise Onks, Bonnie Onks and Phyllis Sparks all of Johnson City; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Glen Edward Onks, age 75, 2427 Huffine Circle, who died Tuesday, will be held Thursday, August 1, 2002 at 8:00 P.M. from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Steve Everoad and Tim Chambers, ministers, officiating. Graveside committal services will be held Friday at 10:00 A.M. from Monte Vista Burial Park. Those wishing to attend graveside services are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:00 A.M. Graveside services for Addison Ray Hawkins, age 77, 1603 Carroll Creek Road, Gray, who died Monday, will be held Friday, August 2, 2002, at 11:00 A.M. from Washington County Memory Gardens with David Clark and Bob Allen, ministers, officiating. There will be no visitation but friends may register their presence at the funeral home Wednesday and Thursday until 5:00 P.M. Mrs. Marjorie LeFever Goforth

Erwin, TN - Mrs. Marjorie LeFever Goforth, 77, 739 Princeton Rd., Johnson City, TN, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit, following a brief illness. Mrs. Goforth was a native of Lenoir, NC, and lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Claude Lee and Lena Hughes LeFever. Mrs. Goforth was retired from Parks-Belk where she was an area sales supervisor. Following retirement she worked part-time at Proffitt's in the dress department. Mrs. Goforth was a member of the Downtown Christian Church, Johnson City, and also a charter member of the Sterling Park Christian Church, Sterling, VA, where she formerly taught Sunday School, Bible School, and served on the building committee. Mrs. Goforth was a 1943 graduate of Science Hill High School, Johnson City. She was preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine "Jerry" LeFever Martin. Mrs. Goforth was the beloved wife of Jack B. Goforth, her husband of fifty-six years, and the dedicated mother of one son, Jack E. Goforth, Kingsport; three daughters, Donna L. Bandy, Kingsport, Tina M. Crawford, Round Hill, VA, and Kimberly K. Maskew, Carthage, NC; one brother, Claude Lee LeFever, Johnson City; ten grandsons; one granddaughter; three great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Susan Martin-Fore, Johnson City.

Marie "Mary" Scheuerman

Marie "Mary" Scheuerman, age 88, Pine Oaks Assisted Living Community, died Thursday, July 25, 2002 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. A native of Defiance, Ohio, Mrs. Scheuerman was a daughter of the late August and Marie Fennit VanBrackel. Mrs. Scheuerman was a homemaker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Her husband, Harry G. Scheuerman and one brother, August VanBrackel preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Gary L. Stanley Boyd Fox

Stanley Boyd Fox, age 59, 203 Wiltshire Drive, Gray, TN, died Friday, July 19, 2002 at his residence following a lengthy illness. Mr. Fox was a native of Springfield, Ohio and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1980. He was a son of the late Floyd and Hazel Parsons Fox. Mr. Fox was the founder and owner of Johnson City Cleaners. He was of the Pentecostal faith. Mr. Fox was preceded in death by one sister, Luna Reed; four brothers, Alonzo Fox, Hershel Fox, Harold Fox and Ray Fox. Richard A. "Rick" Smith

Richard A. "Rick" Smith, 33, 350 Sciota Woods Court, Unicoi, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Smith was a native of Elizabethton, and had been a resident of Washington and Unicoi Counties for most of his life.
He was a son of Janet Fields Smith, Salt Lake City, UT, and the late Harold Richard Smith. Mr. Smith was employed as a chef at Grady's American Grill and was formerly employed with Red Lobster. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Science Hill High School. Hattie Geneva Gobble, age 81, Lakebridge Healthcare Center, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness. A native of Dante, Virginia, Ms. Gobble was a daughter of the late John and Nora Reece McFadden. Ms. Gobble was a homemaker. She was of the Protestant faith. Two brothers preceded Ms. Gobble in death. Survivors include one son, Claude Gobble of Jonesborough; two brothers, Mike McFadden and James McFadden both of Rockford, Illinois; three sisters, Frances Boring of Johnson City; Nell Gifford of Rockford, Illinois and Betty Tisoleal of Aurora, Missouri; two grandchildren. Mrs. Daisy Barnes Alexander, 90, 104 E. Holston Ave., Johnson City, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Alexander was a native of Washington County and had been a resident of Johnson City for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late George Samuel and Ethel Hilbert Barnes. Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker. She was a member of Central Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class and was a former Sunday school teacher for more than 20 years. Mrs. Alexander was a former member of the Johnson City Civinettes. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Frank Alexander, in March of this year; and two brothers, F.H. Robert Allen Weaver

Robert Allen Weaver, 400 Sunset Drive, Johnson City died Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Mr. Weaver was a native of Johnson City and a son of the late Robert Taylor and Dora Bell Nickols Weaver. Mr. Weaver was a retired Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army where he served for 18 years. He distinguished himself in the U.S. Army serving three tours of duty in Vietnam, three tours in Thailand and two tours of duty in Germany. Mr. Weaver was of the Protestant faith. Mrs. Elizabeth "Lib" Evans Leonard , age 80, 791 Old Gray Station Road, Gray, TN died Sunday, July 7, 2002 in Anderson Healthcare Center. Mrs. Leonard was a native of Coeburn, Virginia and a resident of Washington County for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Wilson H. and Angeline Houchins Evans. Mrs. Leonard was a 1941 graduate of Science Hill High School. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Leonard was a member of Boones Creek Christian Church where she was a member of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Leonard in 1999 and one sister, Dorothy Crosby. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela A. Overbay and Nancy K. Samuel Ray Hyatt , 81, 165 Blakemore Circle, Johnson City, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a brief illness. Mr. Hyatt was a Washington County native and had been a resident of Johnson City for most of his life. He was a son of the late Bruce and Lena Talman Hyatt. Mr. Hyatt was formerly employed with Bawgus Asphalt and Paving Co. He was a member of The Way Of The Cross Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. Mr. Hyatt was preceded in death by his wife, Violet McCurry Hyatt, in 1992, an infant son, two sisters, Jane Smith and Margaret Hyatt, and one brother Charlie Hyatt. He is survived by, one son, Dee F. James E. Bower, age 90, 219 W. Unaka Avenue, Johnson City died Wednesday, June 26, 2002 in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Bower was a native of Taylors Valley, Virginia and a son of the late Claude C. and Lela Tolliver Bower. He retired from Beaunit Mills after 40 years of service. Mr. Bower was a member of Liberty Fellowship Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Hazel Reed Bower and Bessie L. Perkins Bower; three sisters, Grace Wagner, Ruth Bower and Stella Fields; three brothers, Carl Bower, Herman Bower and Harold Bower. Survivors include one daughter, Kay Foster, Johnson City; one son, Gary Bower, Johnson City; one step-daughter, Jean Hull, New Jersey; one step-son, William E. Stanton, Atlanta, GA; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Appalachian 928-6111.

Mark Howard Head

Mark Howard Head, age 56, 511 Lee Circle, Johnson City died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Head was a native of Johnson City and a son of Lottie Mae Scalf Head Haynes and the late John Hunter Head. He was a retired employee of Allied Metals following 36 years of service. Mr. Head was a former member of the Tennessee National Guard where he served for four years. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose of Johnson City, past governor of the Johnson City Lodge and past president of the Tennessee Moose Association. Mr. Head was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivor include his wife, Marcie Head, of the home; one son, Mark Lynn Head, of the home; three brothers, Steve Head, Johnson City, Bill Head, Telford, Roscoe Head, Johnson City; four sisters, Rosa Lee Langley, Greensboro, NC, Minnie Grace, Lottie Mae Fox and Alice Hamilton, all of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews. Sylvia Jean Workman

Sylvia Jean Workman, age 68, 1101 Welbourne St., departed this life, Tuesday, June 25, 2002, to forever be with her eternal father and savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. She was a Johnson City native and a daughter of the late Jessie Walter Jestes and Clostie Gragg Jestes Reed. Mrs.Workman was employed by the Peerless Steakhouse for forty-one years. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Workman was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. Workman Sr.; three brothers: Edward "Sonny" Jestes, Dallas Jestes, and Bruce M. Jestes, and two sisters: Joyce Jestes Simpson and Edith Beard. A devoted mother, she is survived by five sons: David K. Workman, Thomas P. Workman, Gregory C. Workman, Bruce M. Workman, all of Johnson City; and Daniel M. Workman, San Antonio, TX; two daughters: Sylvia J. Osborne, Gray, and Rebecca R. Workman, Athens, GA; two sisters: Carolyn Jestes George, Limestone, and Agnes Perkins, Shell Creek, TN; two nieces special to her, Martha Fitzgerald and Carolyn F. Garland; fourteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dr. Homer "Gillis" Partin

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA-Dr. Homer "Gillis" Partin, age 84, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at his residence. Dr. Partin was a former resident of Johnson City, Tennessee where he served as pastor of Boones Creek Baptist Church in the 1950's. He was born in Troy, Alabama and a son of the late William and Leila Partin. Dr. Partin received his BA Degree and Honorary D.D from Bob Jones University and earned a Masters and PHD in Educational Management at Pensacola Christian College and also earned a Masters from Dallas Theological Seminary. He served for 10 years as executive director for Ontario Bible Conference in New York State. Dr. Partin for 25 years served as pastor of numerous churches throughout the Southeastern United States including Boones Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Partin of Montgomery; two daughters, Karen Ackerman of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky and Brenda Farrant of Minnepolis, Minnesota; one son, Reverend Gerald Partin of Montgomery; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Selma J. Robbins

Mrs. Selma J. Robbins, age 82, 3441 McKinley Road, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at NHC Healthcare Center following an extended illness. A native of Washington County, Mrs. Robbins was the daughter of the late Lewis and Martha Merritt. She was retired from Burlington Industries following 30 years of service. Her husband, Herman Robbins and two brothers, Lloyd Merritt and George A. Merritt preceded Mrs. Robbins in death Mrs. Robbins was a member of ARC of Washington County. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Wayne Robbins of Johnson City; three grandsons, Scott Robbins of Kentucky, Todd Robbins of Alaska and Randy Robbins of Washington; three great-grandchildren, Leslie Robbins and Michael Robbins both of Kentucky and Shelby Robbins of Alaska; several nieces and nephews.
