Hattie M. "Joy" Jones, age 91, Asbury Center, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at her residence following a lengthy illness. Ms. Jones was a Mitchell County, North Carolina native and a daughter of the late Rev. Hoke Masters and Lockie Bell Garland Masters. She was a homemaker and a retired horticulturist. Ms. Jones was a member of the Boone Trail Baptist Church She was a former member of the West Hills Garden Club. In addition to her parents, her husband, Harold Henry Jones in 1991, two sisters, Virgie McKinney and Stella Tipton and one brother, Early Masters, preceded Ms. Jones in death. Survivors in two daughters, Betty Gouge of Johnson City and Beverly Flanagan of Edgewood, Maryland; one brother, Frank Masters of Bakersville, North Carolina; one sister Beulah Greene of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Mark Gouge, Gina Speropulos and Eric Gouge all of Johnson City and Joseph Flanagan of Edgewood, Maryland; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Hattie M. "Joy" Jones, age 91, Asbury Center, who died Wednesday, will be held Friday, June 7, 2002 at 7:00 P.M. from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Peter J. Speropulos IV, Chris Hughes and Laura Good officiating. Graveside committal services will be held Saturday at 10:00 A.M. from Monte Vista Burial Park. Miss Mae Nidiffer

Miss Mae Nidiffer, 88, NHC Healthcare, 3209 Bristol Hwy, Johnson City, formerly of Grande Arms Apartments, Johnson City, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at her residence following a lengthy illness. Miss Nidiffer was a Carter County native and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1923. She was a daughter of the late Cephas Grant and Sarah Elizabeth Myers Nidiffer. Miss Nidiffer was retired employee of E.T. & W.N.C. Transportation Co. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. Miss Nidiffer is survived by two brothers, Earl B. Nidiffer, Johnson City and her twin, Ray Nidiffer, Bluff City; two nephews, Robert Gilley, Wilmington, NC, Dr. Gordon G. Garland Cummings Arnold, Jr.

Garland Cummings Arnold, Jr., age 71, 1221 Lowell Street, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Mr. Arnold was a Kingsport native but had lived in Johnson City most of his life. He was a son of the late Garland C. Arnold Sr. and Mable Nuckles Arnold. He was a retired mechanic having worked for Broadway Gulf and GPS service stations. Mr. Arnold was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, two sisters, Pauline Wright and Lucille Mabrey, preceded Mr. Arnold in death. Survivors include his wife, Mary Price Arnold of the home; two sons, Ron Arnold of Unicoi and Michael Arnold of Newport, Florida; one daughter, Sonjia Smith of St. Cloud, Florida; one brother, Freddie Arnold of Mountain City; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Carl R. Blevins

Carl R. Blevins, 78, 223 Laurels Rd., Johnson City, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Blevins was a Chucky, TN native and has been a resident of Johnson City for most of his life. He was the son of the late Marion C. and Gertrude Hamm Blevins. Mr. Blevins retired in 1990 as an electronic engineer from Texas Instruments. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Mr. Blevins was preceded in death by three sisters, Vesta Kyker, Nona Crum and Clyde Reeser. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Blevins; one son, Ray Blevins, Knoxville; one daughter, Janice Randolph, Johnson City; four sisters, Mae Stroud, Gas City, IN, Marie Shelton, Chucky, Dorothy Luttrell, Brandon, FL, and Evora Pormen, Dunkirk, IN; two granddaughters; several nieces and nephews. Lt. Col. Earnest A. Van Huss, USMC (Ret)

Lt. Col. Earnest A. Van Huss, USMC (Ret), 55, 1835 Sulphur Springs Rd., Jonesborough, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Lt. Col. Van Huss was a native of Washington County and has been a resident here since his retirement in 1989. He was a son of Lucy Garland Van Huss, Johnson City and the late Cecil Van Huss. Lt. Col. Van Huss was a 1964 graduate of Science Hill High School and was a 1968 graduate of East Tennessee State University where he received his B.S. Degree in English. Lt. Col. Van Huss was commissioned into the United States Marine Corp in 1968, when he was assigned to duty in the Republic of Vietnam. He returned to the United States in 1970 where he was assigned to the 8th Marine Regiment at Camp LaJeune, NC. In 1974 he was assigned to the U.S. 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific where he participated in the evacuation of Phnom Penh, Cambodia and the evacuation of Saigon. In 1976 he returned to Quantico, VA as a tactics instructor at the Basic School. In 1982 he was assigned as the Executive Officer 1st Battalion 6th Marine Regiment. In 1983 he served as the operations officer for the 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit where he participated in the Liberation of Granada and then deployed to Beirut, Lebanon. In 1984 he was assigned to the Marine Corp Mountain Warfare Training Center where he served as Executive Officer and Base Commander. In 1987 he was assigned to Camp LeJeune, NC as the G-3 II Marine Expeditionary Force until his retirement in 1989. Lt. Col. Van Huss received the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars with combat "V", three Navy Commendation Medals and two Combat Action Ribbons during his service time. Following retirement, he taught History, Government and English at Tri-Cities Christian School and Cedar View Christian School until 1999. Lt. Col. Van Huss was currently employed with Mattern & Craig Inc. as a surveyor. He was a member of the 19th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry CSA and the Mountain Empire Modular Railroad Association. Lt. Col. Van Huss formerly served on the board of Abortion Alternatives Christian Services and was a former Eagle Scout. He was a member of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church, Gray. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Barbara Ann Gouge Van Huss; two sons, Clayton Van Huss and Micah Van Huss, both of Jonesborough; three daughters, Katherine Van Huss, Johnson City, Caroline Van Huss, Jonesborough, and Mary Van Huss, Quantico, VA; one brother, Claude Taylor, Narrows, VA; two grandsons, Gabriel Buskill and Alexander Buskill, both of Johnson City; and his mother-in-law, Dixie Gouge, Johnson City. Alice M. Edmonds , age 81, 109 Five Oaks Drive, Johnson City died Sunday, May 26, 2002 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. Mrs. Edmonds was a native of Pulaski, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Earley Malcolm and Nancy Bell Gravley. Mrs. Edmonds was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Wytheville, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph P. Edmonds in 1993; three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Ruth Hoff, Johnson City, Patsy Jane Huff, Crestview Hills, KY; two sons, Jessie Lent Edmonds, Crestview, FL, George Malcolm Edmonds, DeFuniak Springs, FL; one brother, Earley Eugene Gravley, Pulaski, VA; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Elmer, Bruce Eller, age 91, Appalachian Christian Village, died Thursday, May 23, 2002 at his residence. A native of Johnson County, Mr. Eller was a son of the late Jessie and Eliza Patrick Eller. He was retired from the Wilmington, Delaware Rubber and Hose Company. Mr. Eller was of the Protestant faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia "Pat" Eller and two brothers. Mrs. Mary V. Melvin

Mrs. Mary V. Melvin, age 92, 2022 Sherwood Drive, died Thursday, May 23, 2002 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness. A native of Scott County, Virginia, Mrs. Melvin was a daughter of the late Willie and Alice Stuart Vickers. Mrs. Melvin worked at Universal Moulding for 20 years and also had operated beauty shops in both Johnson City and Bristol. She was a member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church. Her husband, Wyndon Martin Melvin preceded her in death in 1999 along with two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include one son, Albert Melvin and his wife, Jewel of Bristol, Virginia; two sisters, Charmie Leonard and Dulcie Hill both of Bristol; two grandchildren, Ronald Wayne Melvin of Bristol, Virginia and Diane Slagle of Bristol; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Slagle and Justin Slagle both of Bristol; several nieces and nephews. Edward Houston "Hugh" Jones, age 53, 903 Welbourne, died Monday, May 20, 2002 at his residence. A native of Johnson City, Mr. Jones was a son of the late Dr. Alfred and Janie Houston Jones. Mr. Jones was a stonemason. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Jones was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and had been attending the Veterans Administration Protestant Chapel. Mrs. Mattie A. Shull Hughes, 77, N.H.C. Healthcare Center, 3209 Bristol Highway, Johnson City, formerly of 1307 Lynnwood Dr., Johnson City, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Hughes was a Carter County native and has been a resident of Johnson City for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late John and Pearl Taylor Shull. Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker. She was a member of Clifton View Baptist Church. Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Edward Hughes, in 1992, three brothers and one sister. Survivors include one son, Wayne Hughes, Johnson City; one daughter, Joann Ramsey, Nolensville, TN; three grandchildren, Christopher Hughes, Dillon, SC, Samantha Gullahorn, San Diego, CA, and Nick Ramsey, Lexington, VA; one great-granddaughter, Morgan Hughes, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews. Edward Elza Phillips, age 77, Mountain Home, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Elizabethton, Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Thomas Monroe and Hessie Weaver Phillips. He was a retired pipe fitter/plumber. Mr. Phillips was of the Christian faith. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include one daughter, Tonya Grinde, Charlottesville, VA; three brothers, Bud Phillips, Ron Phillips, Dennis Phillips, all of Carter County; one sister, Jo Tims, Carter County; two grandchildren, Paul and Vista Grinde, both of Charlottesville, VA.
