Laura Altonia Runkles, 82, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Runkles was retired from Ridge Recapping, a business she and her husband, James Runkles, operated for 35 years. Mr. Runkles died earlier.

She was born in Morgan County on Jan. 22, 1916, the daughter of Robert Ballard and Elizabeth Carson Privette, both now deceased. She had lived in the Oliver Springs area most of her life.

Mrs. Runkles was a member of New Life Assembly of God in Heiskell.

She is survived by two daughters, Gwendolyn Boatwright of Oliver Springs and Jane Eileen Runkles of Bosque Farms, N.M.; three sons, Joseph Edward Runkles and his wife, Mary, of Harriman, the Rev. Robert Runkles and his wife, Debra, of Clinton, and Curtis Ford Runkles and his wife, Deborah, of Athens, Tenn.; a sister, Georgia Jones of Oliver Springs; and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 18, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Robert Runkles and the Rev. Dewayne Greene officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Davis cemetery in Coalfield.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

George Junior Ward
Retired Briceville resident

George Junior Ward, 55, of Briceville, died at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Ward was retired from McCall's Enterprises, where he worked in strip mining.

He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church of Campbell County and served the church as a deacon.

Mr. Ward is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lola Mae Kennedy Ward; two daughters, Shelia Moore and her husband, Michael, and Charlotte Hicks and her husband, Jerry, all of Briceville; his mother, Julia Duncan Ward of Briceville; three grandchildren, Sheena Moore, Kayla Hicks and Jeremy Hicks; and several nieces and nephews.

His father, Fred Ward, and a grandson, Zachary Hicks, died earlier.

The funeral was to be held at 2 this afternoon, May 18, at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Andy Carroll and the Rev. James Adkins officiating. Burial was to follow at Gravehill cemetery in Briceville.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City is handling arrangements.

Jerry Allen Galloway
Oak Ridge resident

Jerry Allen Galloway, 46, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Galloway had been self-employed before his illness. He was born in Detroit, Mich., and was the son of Wade Galloway of Clinton and of Betty Galloway of Marlow.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two daughters, Candace LaShell of New Orleans, La., and Capricia Galloway of Oak Ridge; two sisters, Debbie Campbell and Valorie Galloway, both of Clinton; and a brother, Brian Galloway of Clinton.

Tina Christopher of Oak Ridge and William and Little Man were considered special friends.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in the chapel of McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Alexander officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Donor Awareness Fund, in care of Tennessee Donor Services, 5908 Toole Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919.

Clyde A. Gray
Halls truck driver

Clyde A. Gray, 42, of Halls, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville.

Mr. Gray was a truck driver with Pasquale Trucking Service in Kentucky.

He was born in Claxton on Jan. 13, 1956, the son of Lawrence and Neeta Roop Gray, who are now deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Gray is survived by a daughter, Heather Gray of Clinton; two sons, Jarred Gray of Clinton and Tyler Gray of Oliver Springs; four sisters, Ruth Sims, Wilma Childs and Shirley Langford, all of Clinton, and Carol Hall of Cleveland; and three brothers, Robert Gray of Knoxville, Gene Gray of Rome, Ga., and Lawrence "Buck" Gray of Morristown.

Mary was considered a special friend.

Another brother, Roy Gray, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, May 19, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Piney Grove cemetery in Heiskell.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Robin Louise Hicks
Shoney's waitress

Robin Louise Hicks, 33, of Caryville, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mrs. Hicks was a waitress at Shoney's restaurant in Oak Ridge, where she had worked for seven years.

She was born in Dayton, Ohio, on Jan. 27, 1965, the daughter of Verdel and Cleo C. Reeves Smith, now of Harriman. She had been a resident of Tennessee since 1973.

Mrs. Hicks was a member of Covenant Life Worship Center in Lake City.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, David Hicks; two daughters, Crystal Pressley and Heather Pressley, both of Caryville; three step-daughters, Trish Hicks and Renee McGhee, both of Caryville, and Katie Akers of Harriman; and her grandmother, Viola Reeves of Gruetli-Laager in Grundy County.

Mrs. Hicks is also survived by a sister, LaShawn Smith of Harriman; and two brothers, Martin Smith of Dayton, Ohio, and Brian Smith of Harriman.

The funeral was held Sunday night, May 17, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Donnie Hill officiating.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 18, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

Anne Howell Owens
Norris resident

Anne Howell Owens, 77, of Norris, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Owens was a homemaker and member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Knoxville.

She was born in Cartersville, Ga., on Sept. 6, 1920. She was the widow of Alfred Owens.

Mrs. Owens is survived by one daughter, Beverly Shropshire and her husband, Freddie, of Norris; one grandchild, Heather Harness and her husband, James, of Clinton; and two great-grandsons, T.J. Harness and Dalton Harness.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Norris Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Ault officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, May 19, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.

Neil Cantwell Parrish
Retired Y-12 employee

Neil Cantwell Parrish, 88, of Woodland Drive, Clinton, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Parrish had retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division after approximately 30 years of service at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.

He was born in Hamblen County on May 8, 1910, the son of Robert and Vesta McNeil Parrish. He graduated from Claiborne County High School, attended Lincoln Memorial University and graduated from East Tennessee State College.

Before going to work at Y-12, Mr. Parrish was a teacher and principal in schools in Claiborne and Anderson counties.

He was a longtime member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Clinton. Mr. Parrish was active in many civic organizations, including being a 50-year member of Alpha Masonic Lodge No. 376, F&AM, in Clinton and a member of the Knoxville Shriners, the South Clinton Lions Club and the Clinton Odd Fellows.

His family described him as well-known for his generosity to his family, friends, neighbors and those in need.

Mr. Parrish is survived by his wife, Anna W. Parrish; a son-in-law, Doyle Turner of Kingston; a granddaughter, Debbie Wall and her husband, David, of Powell; three great-grandchildren, Crystal Lowe of Powell and Samantha Wall and David Ray Wall Jr., both of Oak Ridge; a sister-in-law, Ressie Parrish of Tazewell; and by several nieces and nephews.

Karla Harmon of Tazewell, June Wright of Clinton and Jack and Cora Stokes of Lenoir City were considered special friends.

Mr. Parrish's first wife, Cleo C. Parrish, died earlier, as did a daughter, Judy P. Turner, and two brothers, Kyle Parrish and Bob Parrish.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at First Baptist Church in Clinton with the Rev. Sam Dean officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, with a Masonic service to be conducted at the graveside. Pallbearers will be Bob Parrish, John Parrish, David Parrish, Jerry Coulter, C.T. Haun, Darrell Lankford, Gary Harmon and Neal Buchanan. Deacons at First Baptist Church of Clinton will be honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Judy Parrish Turner Scholarship Fund, in care of First Baptist Church, 222 N. Main St., Clinton, TN 37716.

Louise Wallace Russell
Retired restaurant employee

Louise Wallace Russell, 53, of Clinton, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Russell was retired from the Little China restaurant in Clinton.

Born in Knoxville on March 30, 1945, she was the daughter of Willie Honeycutt of Lake City and Castene Honeycutt, who is deceased.

Mrs. Russell was a member of Tekoa Baptist Church in Knoxville.

In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, John Russell; one daughter, Pam Wallace; one son, Robert Wallace; and a granddaughter, Ariana Wallace, all of Clinton.

Mrs. Russell is also survived by four sisters, Juanita Deaver of Canton, N.C., Yvonne Smith of Oak Ridge, Brenda Moore of Maryville and Phyllis Simpson of Knoxville; three brothers, Jimmy Honeycutt of Maryville, Curtis Honeycutt of Salt Lake City, Utah, and R.L. Honeycutt of Columbus, Miss.; and by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Bill Dean officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at Oak Grove cemetery in Lake City.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ethel Phillips West
Lake City resident

Ethel Phillips West, 84, of Lake City, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Lake City Health Care Center.

Mrs. West is survived by two daughters, Loretta Phillips and her husband, Glen, and Darlis Foster and her husband, Bill, all of Lake City; two sons, Kenneth Duncan and Troy West and his wife, Linda, all of Lake City; a brother, Ervin Phillips and his wife, Juanita, of Briceville; and 11 grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Les Arrwood and the Rev. Bill Thomas officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

John Burgess Lingerfelt
Retired DOE nuclear engineer

John Burgess Lingerfelt, 72, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at home following a long illness.

Mr. Lingerfelt, a licensed professional engineer, retired in 1985 from the Department of Energy. He had been a safety engineer with DOE and its predecessor agencies since 1964.

He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a commissioned naval aviator during and after World War II.

He was born in Elizabethton on Sept. 29, 1925, the son of Edmund Richard and Bertie Vesta Adams Lingerfelt.

Mr. Lingerfelt was the senior design engineer on the first nuclear submarines built by Westinghouse Corp. and was the on-site Westinghouse engineer at the shipyard during the final testing and commissioning of the first three nuclear submarines.

He was the electrical and control systems supervisor responsible for the flight systems installed in the first booster stage of the Saturn V rocket used for the United States' first moon flights.

Mr. Lingerfelt had been an avid gardener and pilot, having owned several small aircraft over the years. He was an amateur radio operator and always enjoyed his friends in the Oak Ridge Amateur Radio Club, his family said.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara Kidd Lingerfelt; a son, Paul Neil Lingerfelt; three sisters, Elizabeth Williams, Helen Benson and Shirley Reichenbach; and several nieces and nephews.

His elder son, Eric Scott Lingerfelt, and a sister, Marybelle Jackson, died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at Anderson County Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

Friends may call at the family home at their convenience.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Boys Club of Oak Ridge, P.O. Box 4021, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, or to the Oak Ridge Public Library, 1401 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
