Mildred Holland, 90, of Oak Ridge, formerly of Williamsburg, Ky., died at 5:30 Saturday morning, Sept. 26, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Holland is survived by her daughter, Amie King of 123 W. Arrowwood Road.

The funeral will be conducted at 8 tonight, Sept. 28, in the chapel of Ellison Funeral Home in Williamsburg with the Rev. Daniel Mayes and the Rev. Ronny Jones officiating.

Burial will be Tuesday, Sept. 29, at New Mount Zion cemetery in Williamsburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home in Williamsburg.

Charles Wayne Braden
Lake City resident

Charles Wayne "Ears" Braden, 39, of Lake City, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, in Lake City.

Mr. Braden is survived by his son, Charles Michael Braden of Lake City; two stepchildren, Allen Wayne Lowe and Krista LeeAnn Lowe, both also of Lake City; two sisters, Gwendolyn Smith of Dalton, Ga., and Barbara Jean Hyle and her husband, Rick, of Oklahoma; and four brothers, Homer Braden and his wife, Kay, of Lake City, Barry Braden of Clinton, Gary Braden and his wife, Valarie, of Ohio, and James Braden and his wife, Mary, of Knoxville.

The funeral was held Saturday, Sept. 26, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Tom Byrge and the Rev. Larry Burchfield officiating.

Burial followed at Sulphur Springs cemetery in Clinton.

Ella C. Ennis
Frequent visitor to Oak Ridge

Ella C. Ennis, 90, of Lansing, Ill., died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at MacNeal Hospital in Riverside, Ill., after a lengthy illness.

For 35 years Mrs. Ennis was a frequent visitor to her family and friends in Oak Ridge.

She was born in Vercez, Austria, and had lived all her life in Lansing. She retired after 40 years as manager of the Claims Department for Clark Transport Co. in Chicago Heights, Ill.

Mrs. Ennis was active in many church and charitable organizations for more than 60 years. She had received numerous awards for her community service, including her 15 years of service in the St. Joseph's Soup Kitchen for the homeless in Hammond, Ind., and the St. Victor's Soup Kitchen for the homeless in Calumet City, Ill.

She was an active lifetime member of St. Ann's Church in Lansing, where she served as first president of the Women's Club. In 1992, Mrs. Ennis was honored as Citizen of the Week for the metropolitan Chicago area for her community service.

She was the widow of Robert Ennis.

Mrs. Ennis is survived by her daughter, Kathy Patinkin of Riverside; her son, Robert Ennis Jr. of Woodridge, Ill., a former Oak Ridge resident for 35 years; and six grandchildren, Seth Patinkin of Princeton, N.J., Dan Patinkin of Washington, D.C., Erin Patinkin of Madison, Wis., Tim Ennis and Molly Ennis, both of Knoxville, and Robert Ennis III of Nashville.

Services will be held Monday, Sept. 28, at St. Ann's Church in Lansing. Burial will be at Assumption cemetery in Glenwood, Ill.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Sept. 27, at Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home in Lansing.

E.E. 'Curley' Denham
Retired Y-12 pipefitter

E.E. "Curley" Denham, 72, of Norwood, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 2, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Denham was retired as a pipefitter at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. He was member of the Pipefitters Union.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Denham was a member of Tower Heights Baptist Church of Knoxville.

He and his wife, Tommie Denham, by whom he is survived, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Feb. 2.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sharron Shea and her husband, Rusty; two sisters, Nell Murrell and Lorraine Harkins; three brothers, John Denham, Glenn Denham and Jim Denham; and by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Sunday, Jan. 4, at McCarty Woodhaven Chapel in Claxton with the Rev. Claude Ferguson officiating. Burial was at McCarty's Woodhaven Mausoleum.

Nelle Wright Harris
Former hospital employee

Nelle Celeste Wright Harris, 83, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Harris was the former director of Environmental Services at Oak Ridge Hospital, now Methodist Medical Center.

She was a volunteer at Methodist Medical Center and a volunteer with the Food Cupboard at Glenwood Baptist Church, where she was a member.

Born in Union, S.C., on Jan. 5, 1914, she was the daughter of Barry A. and Anna Wright. She was the widow of John Garrison Harris, who died March 15, 1988.

Mrs. Harris is survived by two sons, James W. Harris and his wife, Mary Gaines "Liz" Harris, of Charlotte, N.C., and John D. Harris and his wife, Julie Harris, of Erlanger, Ky.; two sisters, Pearle Hammett of Clinton, S.C., and Viola Long of Inman, S.C.; six grandchildren, Donna L. Harris and Ryan Harris, both of Charlotte, Laura Harris and Martha Harris, both of Knoxville, and Toni Chiusano and Angela Chiusano, both of Erlanger; and by one great-granddaughter, Samantha Chiusano of Erlanger.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Jan. 5, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Charles Clark officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Methodist Medical Center Volunteers, 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Ellen Emogene Pate
Former Arboretum employee

Ellen Emogene Kirk Pate, 65, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Pate was an avid bird watcher and wildflower gardener. She had worked at the University of Tennessee Arboretum in the early 1960s and was a former member of the Arboretum Society. In the late 1960s, she was employed at ORTEC.

She was born in Lee County, Va., on June 13, 1932, the daughter of Teddie Everette and Myrtle Elizabeth Denson Kirk. She had been an Oak Ridge resident since 1953.

Mrs. Pate loved to work crossword puzzles and had a deep love of family, according to her relatives, who said she was also an excellent seamstress.

She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, LaFayette Elijah Pate; a daughter, Elaina Allison Pate of Oak Ridge; a son, William Teddie Pate and his wife, Kim, of Coalfield; a sister, Lana Kirk Melton of Oak Ridge; a brother, Neil David Kirk and his wife, Shirley, of Knoxville; a daughter-in-law, Karen Pate of Knoxville; two grandchildren, Christopher David Pate and his wife, Cora, of Oak Ridge and Elijah David Pate of Coalfield; and a great-grandson, Kenneth David Pate of Knoxville.

Juanita Wright of Oak Ridge and Gerald Carden of Lake City were considered special friends.

Another son, David Lee Pate, died Nov. 9, 1995.

The funeral will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Charles Clark officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Oak Ridge Cancer Cupboard, P.O. Box 6216, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-6216.

Wayburn Leon Phillips
Owned Clinton piano company

Wayburn Leon Phillips, 51, of Clinton, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Phillips was owner and operator of the Artisan Piano Co., of Clinton.

He was born in Anderson County on July 25, 1946. His family said he mastered the art of ventriloquism and won the Tennessee state championship three times, at the ages of 12, 13 and 14.

He also had a natural ability to play bass guitar professionally in the late 1960s.

Mr. Phillips was a 1964 graduate of Clinton High School, where he studied music and mastered nine instruments, including the oboe and bassoon. After graduation, he applied for the apprentice piano maker program at Baldwin Laboratories in Ohio, where he studied the technical aspects of tuning, rebuilding and restoring pianos.

During his years with Baldwin, he also began his own business of tuning, rebuilding and restoring pianos. Mr. Phillips tuned pianos for such artists as Liberace, Sandi Patti, Bill Gaither and The Statesmen, his family said.

He was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church of Oliver Springs. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his mother, Geneva Phillips of Clinton, and his sister, Willadean Wingfield of Celina, Texas.

Lenna Lovette, Katie Lovette, Bobbie Lovette, and Robert and Jared, all of Clinton, were considered special friends.

His father, C.L. Phillips, is deceased.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Garvan Walls officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Mount Pisgah cemetery in Oliver Springs.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

James Alex Richardson
Retired farmer

James Alex Richardson, 81, of Karns, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Richardson was a retired farmer. He had been a resident of Mariner Health Care Center of Norris for the past 4 1/2 years.

He was born in Westborn in Claiborne County on Nov. 16, 1916, the son of William Harrison and Viola Miller Richardson. He was a member of River View Baptist Church.

Mr. Richardson is survived by a brother, Winfred Richardson of Speedwell; a sister, Ilene Stooksbury and her husband, Earl, of Knoxville; and by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, Feb. 11, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Corbin Monger and the Rev. Don Hensley officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at McCarty Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the mortuary.

Julia L. Carpenter Duncan
Longtime Oak Ridge resident

Julia L. Carpenter Duncan, 81, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Duncan had been a longtime resident of Oak Ridge and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She was the daughter of Harry and Nell Carpenter, both now deceased, and the widow of Charles Duncan.

Mrs. Duncan is survived by a daughter, Charlene Seeber and her husband, James, of Oliver Springs; a son, Rick Duncan and his wife, Traci, of Knoxville; a stepdaughter, Chloe Paulhus and her husband, Don, of Rhode Island; three grandchildren, Richard Childs, Caitlin Duncan and Kimberly Duncan, and an expected grandson, Andrew Duncan.

Ruth Phillips and Bill Hensley were considered good friends.

Two sisters, Sarah Carpenter and Eleanor Carpenter, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in the chapel of McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with Linda Judge McRae officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Myron F. Fair
Retired ORNL head

Myron F. Fair, 77, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Fair was retired as head of the Education and Training Section of the Health Physics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He began his 37 years of employment at ORNL in October 1948 with Union Carbide Nuclear Division and retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in October 1985.

While employed at ORNL, he taught at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology and at Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

Mr. Fair was also a visiting professor at Vanderbilt University and, for the World Health Organization, taught international health physics courses in Stockholm, Sweden, and in Mol, Belgium.

From 1963 to 1964, he took a year's leave of absence from ORNL to head the Health Physics Fellowship Office at the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies. He then returned to ORNL and continued to teach health physics, at the University of Tennessee from 1965 to 1978, in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1975 for the Organization of American States, and from 1984 to 1985 at the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State Community College.

Mr. Fair was a charter member of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Health Physics Society and a former member of the Examining Panel of the American Board of Health Physics. He was also a contributing author to "Principles of Radiation Protection," published by John Wiley.

Born in Denora, Pa., on Dec. 16, 1920, he was the son of Antonio and Amelia Panza Fair. He was a 1938 graduate of Denora High School and a 1943 cum laude graduate of Duquesne University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. In 1947, he received a master of science degree in physics from the University of Michigan.

Before employment with ORNL, Mr. Fair taught physics under the Armed Services Training Program at Duquesne University during World War II. From 1943 to 1946, he was employed with the Cryogenics Laboratory at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C.

On March 16, 1944, he married the former Mary Theresa King in Pittsburgh, Pa. The couple met while Mr. Fair was teaching physics to Air Force students at Duquesne and she was the nurse in the infirmary. According to the family, the students liked them both and decided to play Cupid by telling him "Miss King is a pretty sweet girl" and telling her what "a swell fellow" their physics instructor was. After that, according to their engagement announcement, "Cupid took things in his own hands" when a cinder got in Mr. Fair's eye and he had to visit the infirmary.

Mr. Fair was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Fair-Cope and her husband, Sam Cope, and Mary Ann Galante and her husband, Robert Galante; and a sister, Enice A. Fair of Washington, D.C.

A son, Myron King Fair, died earlier, and three sisters and four brothers are also deceased.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Woods officiating.

Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. A Rosary will follow the service.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Building Fund at St. Mary's Church, 327 Vermont Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
