Dillard Dennis Spangler

Dillard Dennis Spangler, 79, of Oak Ridge, died at 1:30 Tuesday morning, April 14, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

A resident of Oak Ridge for 53 years, Mr. Spangler was retired as a painter at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. He began his employment with Union Carbide Nuclear Division on Dec. 20, 1945, and retired on Dec. 31, 1980.

He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Painters and a member of Allied Trades of the U.S. and Canada, Local No. 1805, and served the local as financial secretary for many years.

He was born in Kings Mountain, Ky., on Sept. 14, 1918, the son of John Henry and Lillie Elizabeth Reece Spangler. Mr. Spangler was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served with the Fifth Division, called Red Diamond, at the Battle of the Bulge. Among his many decorations were two Bronze Stars.

He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Mr. Spangler enjoyed woodworking and often made decorative objects such as deer at Christmas time to give to friends and relatives, his family said. He also enjoyed camping and traveling. After he retired, he and his wife, Marcella Gooch Spangler, who survives him, traveled all over the United States as well as to England and Scotland.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara Lynn Spangler Burns of Cleveland, Tenn., and Beverly Susan Spangler Sawyer and her husband, Gary Sawyer, of The Hague, the Netherlands; a sister, Delsie M. Kincer of Roseville, Mich.; and two brothers, James D. Spangler and his wife, Agnes Spangler, of Titusville, Fla., and Donald C. Spangler and his wife, Emma Spangler, of College Park, Md.

Mr. Spangler is also survived by three grandchildren, Christopher D. Sawyer, a student at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Kevin M. Sawyer, a student at Webster University in Leiden, the Netherlands, and Richard Alan Burns of Cleveland; a sister-in-law, Berti Gooch of Danville, Ky.; and a niece, Jean Lewis and her husband, J.C. Lewis, and their children, Jeff and Steve Lewis and their families, all of Oak Ridge.

A grandson, Chuck Burns, died in 1980.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Bob Gray officiating.

A military honor guard will conduct a graveside service at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Heart Association, Anderson County Unit, P.O. Box 6014, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, or to the American Lung Association of Tennessee, 109 Northshore Drive, Suite 301, Knoxville, TN 37919.

E.L. 'Bud' Robbins
Retired insurance agent

E.L. "Bud" Robbins, 72, of Marlow Circle, Clinton, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Robbins was retired after 32 years as an insurance agent with Life and Casualty Insurance Co..

He was born in Anderson County on June 9, 1925, the son of William Bill and Martha Robbins, both now deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Robbins was a charter member and retired chief of the Marlow Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church of Marlow.

Mr. Robbins is survived by his wife, Barbara Wilhite Robbins; a daughter, Barbie Good and her husband, Clay, of Clinton; a son, Bill Robbins and his wife, Beverly, of Clinton; a grandson, Tyler Robbins of Clinton; four sisters, Eva Jones, Willa Luke and her husband, Charles, and Jerry Cranmore and her husband, Jess, all of Clinton, and Mary Ruth Duncan and her husband, Howell, of Oliver Springs; and by several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Johnnielee Robbins, died earlier.

The funeral was held Sunday, April 26, at Poplar Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Dawson and the Rev. Homer Hooks officiating.

Burial was at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton. Members of the Marlow Volunteer Fire Department served as pallbearers. Members of the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard conducted full military rites.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton handled arrangements.

Soren King
Former ORHS scholar

Soren King, 23, of Clinton, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at the University of Maryland Hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Mr. King was born May 18, 1974, in Harringay, London, England, the son of Carol and Adolph King of Clinton, formerly of Oak Ridge. He attended Jefferson Junior High School and as a Jefferson student won the grand championship in the Biology Junior Division of the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair.

He continued to excel in his studies at Oak Ridge High School and was a National Merit Scholar finalist. He was a member of the ORHS swim team and of the Atomic City Aquatic Club. He graduated from ORHS in 1991.

In addition to swimming, Mr. King was interested in dancing, the theater and choreography. He was a member of the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse and the Oak Ridge Academy of Dance and had danced with Circle Modern and the dance troupe at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Mr. King was awarded an IBM scholarship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering in December 1994. He was a member of Theta Xi fraternity.

While at Rensselaer, he performed in several theatrical productions, and in addition was a member of the water polo team. In his senior year, he was captain of the swim team.

His many interests also included international culture and architecture. Mr. King also worked in the network services of the UTK computing department.

In addition to his parents, Mr. King is survived by his sister, Renée King; three aunts, Syble King, Martha Carter and Gwyneth McLean; three uncles, Verrol King and Julien King, both of New York, and Courtney Johnson of England; and his cousins, Shari King, Charmaine King, Tony King, Omar Carter, Toniqua Carter, Lorien King, Danielle King, Maurice Young, Trudy Young, Herman McLean Jr., and Keisha McLean.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 212 N. Tulane Ave. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

Della Mae Shelton King
Retired teacher's aide

Della Mae Shelton King, 75, of NHC HealthCare of Knoxville and formerly of Oak Ridge, died this morning, May 22, 1998, at the health care center.

Mrs. King was a retired teacher's aide. She was employed at the former Daniel Arthur Rehabilitation Center from 1960 until her retirement in January 1992.

She was born in Bradley County on March 9, 1923, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Knight. She had been an Oak Ridge resident since 1952.

Mrs. King was a member of Chapter 756 of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening and working with flowers, the family said. She was a Baptist.

She was the widow of Harry King, who died in 1984.

Mrs. King is survived by two daughters, Patti Branson and her husband, Mickey, of Knoxville, and Glenda Bernice Wooton and her husband, Alan, of Austin, Texas; two sons, Roy Shelton Jr. of Knoxville and Dan Shelton and his wife, Carolyn, of Oak Ridge; and a brother, Earl Knight of Cleveland, Tenn.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jason Shelton and Erin Shelton, both of Oak Ridge, Jennifer Shelton Stevens of Oliver Springs, Nickie Shelton of Baton Rouge, La., and Amanda Branson, Adam Branson and Lisa Shutt and her husband, Chuck, all of Knoxville; and by three great-grandchildren, Cassandra Stevens, Megan Shutt and Emily Shutt.

Another granddaughter, Casey Shelton, died July 25, 1996.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 24, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary. Members of the Oak Ridge chapter of Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service before the funeral.

Burial will be at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

James Godfrey LeSieur Jr.
Former Oak Ridge resident

James Godfrey LeSieur Jr., 85, of Newport Beach, Calif., died Friday, July 17, 1998, in Newport Beach after a short illness.

Mr. LeSieur was a former resident of Oak Ridge and was employed here with the Atomic Energy Commission from 1943 to 1957. He and his wife, Louise, and their two sons, Jimmy and David, lived at 115 Orange Lane and were members of First United Methodist Church.

He was active in the Lions Club here as well as other civic organizations.

In 1957, Mr. LeSieur was transferred to Grand Junction, Colo., and in 1962 was transferred to Las Vegas, Nev., where he retired in 1970. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to California. His wife died in 1980.

Mr. LeSieur is survived by his sons, James LeSieur III of Corona Del Mar, Calif., and David LeSieur of Burlingame, Calif.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother and three sisters.

Burial was at Corona del Mar.

Wilson O. Edmonds
72, of Oak Ridge

Vann Kelly
Member of First Baptist of OS

Vann Allen Kelly, 65, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Kelly worked for 21 years at Roane Electric Co. in Rockwood before leaving in 1984. He then went to work for Cross Mountain Mining Co., retiring in 1995.

Born March 27, 1933, he was the son of Robert and Stella Jackson Kelly, both now deceased. He attended Coalfield High School and lived in Coalfield until 1979, when he moved to Oliver Springs.

Mr. Kelly was a member of First Baptist Church of Oliver Springs.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Verldean Coker Kelly; five daughters, Cindy Daniels and her husband, Dennis, of Andersonville, Karen Kirkland and her husband, Wes, of Powell, Brenda Hamby and her husband, Ronnie, of Gastonia, N.C., and Cindy Bendure and her husband, Roger, and Darlene Collins and her husband, Steve, all of Oliver Springs; and four sons, Mitchell Kelly, Ronnie Poole and his wife, Suzanne, and Jeff Kelly and his wife, Cindy, all of Oliver Springs, and Mike Kelly and his wife, Debbie, of Rockwood.

Mr. Kelly is also survived by a son-in-law, Michael Brown of Knoxville; grandchildren Ron Hamby, Sonya Hamby, Kristi Kelly, Shannon Poole, Morgan Poole, Kelly Collins, Phillip Kelly, Kristin Kelly, Allison Bendure, Wesley Kirkland and Mary Catherine Brown; and three sisters, Geneva Russell and her husband, Earl, of Oak Ridge, Elda June Humphrey and her husband, Stirlin, of Harriman, and Hattie Mae Henderson and her husband, Barry, of Oliver Springs.

Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Dottie Kelly of Forest Park, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Edward Coker and his wife, Linda, of Oliver Springs; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Verldon and Irene Coker of Oliver Springs.

Mr. Kelly's first wife, Mildred McNew Kelly, died earlier. A daughter, Catherine Brown of Knoxville, and two brothers, Phillip Kelly of Midtown and Alton Kelly of Forest Park, Ga., also died earlier.

The funeral was to be held at 11 this morning, June 15, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Tony Rutherford officiating.

Burial was to follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 601, Oliver Springs, TN 37841.

Gary Wilson Litton
Son of Oak Ridge resident

Gary Wilson Litton, 56, of Knoxville, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at his home of congestive heart failure.

Mr. Litton was the son of Dorothy McWright of Oak Ridge.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Bearden Christian Church. He was a former resident of Nashville.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Litton is survived by his wife, Linda Womac Litton; a daughter, Lynda Christine Litton of Fort Collins, Colo.; a son, Anthony Bradford Litton and his wife, Cheryl, of Cameron, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Sabrina Nichole Litton; a brother, Douglas Freeman Litton and his wife, Gail, of Marshville, N.C.; a niece, Kimberly Litton Thomas of Monroe, N.C.; and by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will be held at 6 tonight, June 15, in the chapel of McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge funeral Home with the Rev. John Leech III officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Members of the Volunteer State Honor Guard will conduct military rites with full honors at the graveside. Mickey Snyder, Jack Martin, Tom Chesney, Ronnie Hull, Bud Bradshaw and Rick Cross will be honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 tonight at the funeral home.

C.L. 'Buck' Barger
Owned appliance business

C.L. "Buck" Barger, 72, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Barger was the former owner of Barger Appliance Repair, a business that he operated in Oak Ridge for 32 years.

He was born in Rhea County on June 14, 1926, the son of C.T. and Ethel Dobbs Barger, who are now deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served as a coxswain in the South Pacific during World War II. Among the medals he received was the Purple Heart.

While in the Navy, Mr. Barger was a member of the band that played aboard the USS Acherner. The Center for the Study of War and Society in the Hoskins Library at the University of Tennessee has a picture of the ship.

Mr. Barger had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1943, moving here from Dayton, Tenn. He was a member of Royce Baptist Church. He was a longtime member of the Oak Ridge Country Club until becoming ill.

He enjoyed music, playing golf and bowling, and he was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team, his family said.

Mr. Barger is survived by his wife of 50 years, Louise Parson Barger; a daughter, Peggy Brummett and her husband, David, of Oak Ridge; and three sisters, Kate Massengale and her husband, J.B., of Dayton and Rose Seals and her husband, Jim, and Phoebe Mullins and her husband, Howard, all of Oak Ridge.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, Michael Schaefer, Karen Brummett and Rachel Brummett, all of Oak Ridge; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Quilliams of Oak Ridge; two sisters-in-law, Betty Barger of Knoxville and Kay Barger of Oak Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Larry Barger, died in 1976.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 20, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Mack Smith officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.
