Clifton Hayes Sweet
Founder of Sweet Estates

Clifton Hayes Sweet, 84, of Clinton, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Sweet was a retired home builder and the founder of Sweet Estates in Clinton.

He was born in Anderson County on Sept. 30, 1913, the son of John and Nancy Duncan Sweet. He was a member of Batley Baptist Church of Clinton and had been a member of Clinton Alpha Masonic Lodge No. 376 for the past 50 years.

Mr. Sweet is survived by four daughters, Shirley Ann Harrelson and her husband, James, of Tullahoma, Carolyn Page and her husband, Steve, of Clinton, Merelyn Young and her husband, Jim, of Heiskell, and Glenda Smith and her husband, Bill, of Falls Church, Va.; and a son, Charles Sweet and his wife, Virginia, of Clinton.

He is also survived by a sister, Hallie Haney of Clinton, and 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Gertrude Queener and Jess Weaver, both of Clinton, were considered special friends.

His wife, Maude Sweet, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, March 6, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Luke Kidwell, the Rev. Lee Kidwell and Bill Smith officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

William E. Thomas
Retired ORNL engineer

William Edward Thomas, 69, of Oak Ridge died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Thomas was retired as a developmental staff member in the Research Reactor Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He began his employment with Union Carbide Nuclear Division on Oct. 8, 1956, and retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems on Dec. 31, 1992.

Born in Bakersfield, Calif., on Dec. 11, 1928, he was the son of William Leslie and Carrie Marie Craig Thomas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Thomas was a former member of First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge and a member of the Oak Ridge Sportsman Association.

He is survived by a son, William M. Thomas, and two grandchildren, Carrie Thomas and William Thomas, all of Lebanon, Tenn.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, in the chapel of Bass Funeral Home in Gordonsville, Tenn. Burial will follow at Brush Creek cemetery in Brush Creek, Tenn.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, March 6, at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge and from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Bass Funeral Home in Gordonsville.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Heart Association, Anderson County Unit, P.O. Box 6014, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

Ronald Lee White Oliver Springs native
Ronald Lee White, 52, of Heiskell, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville.

Mr. White was born in Oliver Springs on July 18, 1945, the son of Harvey and Helen Sepe White, both now deceased.

He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, including 10 years in Germany and one year in Korea.

Mr. White was a member of Dutch Valley Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Sutton White; two sons, Dennis Lee White of Virginia and Darryl Lynn White of Florida; and five stepchildren, Udo Shoemaker of Gatesville, Texas, Billy Ray Whitton of Cleveland, Texas, Penny Lee Wheeler and Sarah Ann Boydstun, both of Temple, Texas, and Tracy K. Beard of Heiskell.

Mr. White is also survived by a sister, Mary Jane Burress of Clinton; five brothers, Ray White of Oliver Springs and Bobby White, Carl White, Freddy White and Tony White, all of Dutch Valley; and by two grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Herman Faddis officiating. Burial will follow at Long cemetery in Dutch Valley.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the funeral home.

Walter Sherman Hollingsworth
Retired Y-12 Plant machinist

Walter Sherman Hollingsworth, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday morning, March 17, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Hollingsworth retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in April 1980 as a machinist at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.

He was born in Schoolfield, Va., on April 19, 1915, the son of Jacob Edward and Florence Ewing Hollingsworth.

Mr. Hollingsworth was a member of the National Guard and the Naval Reserve. He was also a member of Central Baptist Church and the church's Go-Getters Club.

He and his wife, Miriam Madelyn Inman Hollingsworth, who survives him, came to Oak Ridge in 1943. The couple left in 1945 but moved back to Oak Ridge in 1953. Both enjoyed traveling, and Mr. Hollingsworth also loved gardening and woodworking, his wife said.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hollingsworth is survived by two daughters, Betty Jo Chumley of Oak Ridge and Anita Lee Mooty and her husband, Thomas, of Wartburg; four grandchildren, Thomas E. Mooty Jr. of Pryor, Okla., Jolynn M. Doty and her husband, Cal, of Greeneville, Lisa G. Ottinger and her husband, Larry, of Parrotsville, and Rick Davis and his wife, Sherry, of Morrow, Ga.; and by three great-grandchildren, Sean T. Mooty and Caitlin Mooty, both of Pryor, and Charlee Doty of Greeneville.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Bob Gray and the Rev. Thomas Mooty officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 20, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Building Fund at Central Baptist Church, 130 Providence Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Rankin Jennings
Lancing resident

Rankin Jennings, 51, of Lancing, died Tuesday morning, March 17, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Jennings is survived by his wife, Loleta Whitaker Jennings of Oak Ridge; his mother, Ruby Jennings of Lancing; three sisters, Margaret Ooten of Jamestown, Cora McCann of Deer Lodge and Geneva McCann of Lancing; and two brothers, Bobby Jennings of Lancing and Junior Jennings of Harriman.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, March 18, in the chapel of Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg with Ed Dautel, pastor, and the Rev. Buster Armes officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at Sunbright cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mary P. LeCroy
Retired Y-12 timekeeper

Mary P. LeCroy, 77, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday morning, March 17, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. LeCroy was retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc. as a timekeeper at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.

She was the widow of James B. LeCroy. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. LeCroy is survived by two daughters, Trish McGhee and Sandy Hodge, both of Knoxville; three grandchildren, Michelle and Christy McGhee, both of Knoxville, and Whitney Roe of Nashville; and a sister, Kathryn Godejohn of Tampa, Fla.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Larry Dipboye officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, Anderson County Unit, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge; or to the Women's Crisis Center, 140 E. Division Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Vivian Lee Lewellyn
Woodland Park member

Vivian Lee Carroll Lewellyn, 64, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge of ovarian cancer.

Mrs. Lewellyn was an active member of Woodland Park Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir.

She was the daughter of Charles and Maggie Carroll, both now deceased.

Mrs. Lewellyn was a homemaker. She loved working in her garden, her family said.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne Lewellyn; two daughters, Pat Finger and her husband, Mike, of Oak Ridge, and Debi Norton and her husband, Jerry, of Alcoa; two sons, Gary Lewellyn and Jeff Lewellyn and his wife, Lisa, all of Oak Ridge; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Lewellyn is also survived by two sisters, Lois McLane of Lenoir City and Jerry Golden of Surgoinsville; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Arwood of Lenoir City, Velma Farmer of Huntsville, Ala., and Polly Byrd of Knoxville; and by several nieces and nephews.

Among her many friends she considered special are Stella Smith, Adele Haun and Ruby and H.C. Shanks.

A sister, Jesse Carroll, two brothers, Bud Carroll and Sonny Carroll, a granddaughter, Caitlin Norton, and three brothers-in-law, Jim Farmer, Billy Golden and Elmer Lewellyn, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, March 18, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Daniel Mayes officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Julia L. Carpenter Duncan
Longtime Oak Ridge resident

Julia L. Carpenter Duncan, 81, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Duncan had been a longtime resident of Oak Ridge and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She was the daughter of Harry and Nell Carpenter, both now deceased, and the widow of Charles Duncan.

Mrs. Duncan is survived by a daughter, Charlene Seeber and her husband, James, of Oliver Springs; a son, Rick Duncan and his wife, Traci, of Knoxville; a stepdaughter, Chloe Paulhus and her husband, Don, of Rhode Island; three grandchildren, Richard Childs, Caitlin Duncan and Kimberly Duncan, and an expected grandson, Andrew Duncan.

Ruth Phillips and Bill Hensley were considered good friends.

Two sisters, Sarah Carpenter and Eleanor Carpenter, died earlier.

The family was to receive friends from 2 to 3 this afternoon, April 16, at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. The funeral was to be held at 3 this afternoon in the chapel of the funeral home, with Linda Judge McRae officiating.

A graveside service at Oak Ridge Memorial Park was to follow.

Robert Kyle Johnson
Knoxville resident

Robert Kyle Johnson, 67, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Bernice Johnson; four daughters, Teresa Hocker and her husband, Stan, Sharon Fansler and her husband, Mike, Laurie Nelson and her husband, Rick, and Cecilia Rose and John Bishop; three sons, Robbie Johnson and his wife, Gina, David Johnson and his wife, Delly, and Keith Johnson and his wife, Nancy; a sister, Sandra Butler; a brother, Jimmy Johnson; and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, April 17, in the chapel of Mynatt Funeral Home in Knoxville with the Rev. Keith Johnson, the Rev. Paul Lester and the Rev. Charles Earl officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Milan cemetery in Knoxville. Family and friends are to meet at 9:15 a.m. at Mynatt's.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the building fund either of East Maryville Baptist Church, 1220 Brown School Road, Maryville, TN 37804, or of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Emory Road East, Knoxville, TN 37938.

Vera Olive McFall
Lenoir City resident

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Lake View cemetery in Loudon County.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Genevieve Turnbill
Genevieve Turnbill, 75, of Lake City, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City is handling arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.
