James Herbert Shoemaker

James Herbert Shoemaker, 78, of Clinton, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a long illness.

Mr. Shoemaker was retired as chief of guards at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. He had worked for more than 38 years for Union Carbide Nuclear Division, beginning on Oct. 2, 1943, as a guard at Y-12 and retiring on Jan. 30, 1982.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton.

Mr. Shoemaker is survived by his wife, Audrey Douglas Shoemaker; three children, Gloria Taylor and her husband, Raymond, James H. Shoemaker and Wesley Shoemaker and his wife, Patricia; and seven grandchildren, Tina Taylor and her fiance Albert Roach Jr., Alison Shoemaker, Matthew Shoemaker, Samantha Shoemaker, Aaron Shoemaker, Tray Shoemaker and Andrew Shoemaker.

He is also survived by a sister, Lorene Hooks; a brother, Frank Shoemaker and his wife, Belle; and a sister-in-law, Frances Shoemaker.

A sister, Cynthia Pritt, and two brothers, Eugene Shoemaker and Harold Shoemaker, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 26, at First Baptist Church, 222 N. Main St., Clinton, with the Rev. Samuel Dean officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the church.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements.

Adele Yourconis
Retired seamstress

Adele Yourconis, 88, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Yourconis was a retired seamstress. She had lived in Oak Ridge since 1981.

She was born in Mayesville, Pa., on June 6, 1909, the daughter of Anthony and Anna Conrad.

Mrs. Yourconis was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of St. Theresa's Guild at the church. She loved sewing, gardening and raising flowers, her family said.

She was the widow of Albert Yourconis, who died approximately a year ago.

Mrs. Yourconis is survived by a daughter, Adele Medovich and her husband, David, of Oak Ridge; three sons, Albert Yourconis of Oak Ridge, Joseph Yourconis of Yonkers, N.Y., and William Yourconis of Willimantic, Conn.; three grandchildren, Deborah Bangeman, Pamela Medovich and Janice McCaslin; and two great-grandchildren, Casey McCaslin and Kane McCaslin.

Two sisters died earlier.

A funeral Mass was to be held at 1 this afternoon, May 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Woods officiating.

Burial was to follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to St. Theresa's Guild, in care of St. Mary's Catholic Church, 327 Vermont Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Nellie Mae Bradshaw
Mother of Oak Ridge resident

Nellie Mae Bradshaw, 93, of North Douglas Ave., Rockwood, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Roane Medical Center in Harriman.

Mrs. Bradshaw was the mother of Nonavea B. Rodgers of Oak Ridge.

She was a member of Rockwood Baptist Tabernacle.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Bradshaw is survived by three sons, Eugene R. Bunch of Murfreesboro, Billy Rolland Pressley of Seymour and Jimmy R. Pressley of Tupelo, Miss.; two sisters, Myrtle Hill and Vida Bryant, both of Rockwood; and a brother, Bill Bradshaw of Rockwood.

She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 5l great-great-grandchildren.

Wanda Capps of Harriman was considered a special friend.

A sister and a brother, Edith Swafford and Roy Bradshaw, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, in the chapel of Evans Mortuary in Rockwood with the Rev. Louis Capps officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, June 1, at the mortuary.

Gladys Edwards
Former Oak Ridge resident

Gladys Edwards, 76, of Lakeland, Fla., and a former resident of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at her home of a heart attack.

Mrs. Edwards was formerly employed at the Woodland Beauty Salon in Oak Ridge. She moved to Florida approximately 30 years ago.

She was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Ohio.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jerry Edwards; a son, Donnie Neeley of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Philpot and Virginia Thompson, both of Middletown, Ohio; and by several local nieces and nephews, Wanda Craven, Joyce Jannen, Anna Lane, Phillip Parrett, Kathleen Moore, Jerry Parrett and Angela Collins.

Her sister-in-law, Hazel Parrett, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Chris Stephens officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Library Fund at Central Baptist Church, 130 Providence Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Ernest Edward Horton
Father of Oak Ridge resident

Ernest Edward Horton of Maryville Pike, Knoxville, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital in Knoxville.

Mr. Horton was the father of Frank Edward Horton of Oak Ridge.

He was born in Whitesburg, Tenn., the son of John and Leatha Tate Horton, both now deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Horton was retired from Southern Railway as a mail clerk. He was a member of Lennon-Seney United Methodist Church in Knoxville and had served the church in various capacities during his membership.

In addition to his son and his daughter-in-law, Katie Horton, he is survived by his wife, Aurelia Rogers Horton; a grandson, Brian Edward Horton; two step-grandchildren, Amanda K. and Jason Stumbo; and a sister-in-law, Geneva R. Hardin.

Mr. Horton is also survived by five nieces, Shirley Sims and her husband, John, of Sudbury, Mass., Margaret L. Lovely, Geraldine Hargrave, Almeda Dockery and her husband, William, and Joann Griffin; his first cousin Louise Thompson and her husband, Sanders; and by several other relatives.

Among friends he considered special were those in the Lennon-Seney Church.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Lennon-Seney Church with the Rev. James E. Jackson officiating. The Rev. Raymond E. White will give the eulogy.

Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Knoxville.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Martha Brown Jones
Apostolic church member

Martha Brown Jones, 74, of Andersonville, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Jones was a member of Eagle Bend Apostolic Church of Clinton.

She was the daughter of Joseph and Benne Francis Brown, both now deceased.

Mrs. Jones is survived by two daughters, Effie Early and her husband, William, and Dorothy Painter and her husband, Roy, all of Andersonville; two sons, Glyn Jones and his wife, Irene, and Johnny Jones and his wife, Darlene, all of Clinton; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Lowery of Clinton; and by 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Sister Pearl Riggs of Lake City was considered a very special friend.

Three sisters, her twin, Kathleen Brown, and Beulah Gass and Della Patty, and a brother, Henry E. Brown, died earlier.

The funeral was to be held at 10:30 this morning, June 1, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. David Triplett officiating.

Burial was to be at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

Harold King
Retired insurance salesman

Harold King, 74, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. King was a retired insurance salesman with Liberty National Insurance.

He was born in Corbin, Ky., on Jan. 14, 1924, the son of John G. and Cora Freeman King. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. King attended Royce Baptist Church and was a member of Faith Masonic Lodge No. 756. He enjoyed gardening and fishing, his family said.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah B. King; a daughter, Gail Taylor and her husband, Jack, of Knoxville; two sisters, Thelma Cornett of Louisville, Ky., and Lola Thompson of Covington, Ky.; a brother, Raymond King of Salvisa, Ky.; two grandchildren, Bobby Taylor and Devin Taylor, both of Knoxville; and three nephews, Larry Thompson, Richard Thompson and Jimmy Cornett.

The funeral will be held at 8:15 tonight, June 1, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Mack Smith officiating. A Masonic service at 8 will precede the funeral.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the mortuary.

Rosie Rejcek Knapp
Mother of Oak Ridge resident

Rosie Rejcek Knapp, 91, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Oak Ridge, Helen and Don Russell.

Mrs. Knapp was born Nov. 14, 1907, in Hill County, Texas, the eldest of six children of Florian Rejcek and Thereza Mynarcik Rejcek from Czechoslovakia.

She married John Knapp on Oct. 15, 1929, in West Texas. They moved to the Harmon community in Coryell County where they farmed and ranched until 1952, when they moved to Killeen. Her husband died in 1963.

Before moving to Oak Ridge in 1977, Mrs. Knapp was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Killeen and of the Altar Society. She had also worked in the school cafeteria of Killeen Independent School District.

In addition to her local daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Knapp is survived by another daughter, Evelyn Schneider and her husband, Darold, of Harker Heights, Texas; two brothers-in-law, Frank Knapp and his wife, Joan, of Gatesville, Texas, and Bernard Knapp and his wife, Edna, of Killeen; one granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

All of her siblings died in the 1980s.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Central Time on Tuesday, June 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Killeen with the Rev. Charles Davis officiating.

Burial will follow at Killeen City cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight, June 1, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen. A Rosary will be said at 7.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 327 Vermont Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

The Rev. Elizabeth Harrell Perry
Former minister, missionary

The Rev. Elizabeth Harrell Perry, 59, of Knoxville, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center, Knoxville.

Mrs. Perry had been in ministry since 1977. She and her husband, the late William Mike Perry, founded Faith Fellowship Outreach in Oak Ridge in 1978 and together they served as pastors of the church and administered the Word of Faith Bible College. They also led teaching tours to the Holy Land. When her husband died in 1988, Mrs. Perry became senior pastor of the church.

She was a missionary with Christian Believers United, Montreat, N.C., and was one of the charter members of the Outreach Club. Among her ministry trips, Mrs. Perry visited the former Soviet Union, China, Poland, Cuba and numerous European and Middle Eastern countries.

She served on the advisory board of CBU World Missions and on the executive board of the CBU Ministerial Fellowship. Mrs. Perry ministered through seminars, conferences, camps, international missions programs, Christian workers, and church organizations.

Her family said they were extremely proud of her life in service of the Lord.

She was the daughter of Violet Josephine and James Nolan Herrell, both now deceased.

Mrs. Perry is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia Lynn and Randy Walker and Shanda Irene and Khalil El-Ajam; a son and daughter-in-law, Joel Charles and Kay Hamock Brown; two sisters, Carolyn Landsdale and Rose Irene Crone; and by numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and her parents, a brother, Lewis Harrell, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, June 1, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Faith Fellowship Outreach, 1120 Lovell View Drive, Knoxville, TN 37932.
