Sarah Frances Hogan, 85, a resident of Powell and formerly of Clinton, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Hogan had retired after 28 years of service as a nurse's aide at the former Oak Ridge Hospital.

She was born in Ellenboro, N.C., on April 2, 1913, the daughter of Joseph and Alma McDaniel Hamrick, both now deceased.

Mrs. Hogan was a member of North Clinton Baptist Church. She enjoyed flowers, reading and cooking, the family said.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Gibson and her husband, Lige, of Claxton, and Betty Hertel and her husband, Robert, of New Mexico; and by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jessie Shephard of Clinton was considered a special friend.

Her son, James Hogan, died earlier.

The funeral was held Saturday night, Aug. 22, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Ronald Guthrie and Roy Buchanan officiating.

A graveside service was held Sunday, Aug. 23, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

Lee Wilson
Former sawmill operator

Lee Wilson, 77, of Clinton, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Wilson was a machinist and the former owner and operator of Wilson Sawmill on Granite Road in Clinton.

He was born in Lee, Ky., on Nov. 1, 1920, the son of James and Mary Patterson Wilson, both now deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Mr. Wilson was a member of Fratersville Baptist Church in Lake City.

He is survived by a son, Phillip Lee Wilson of Paulsbo, Wash.; and a grandson, David Wilson of Paulsbo.

Mr. Wilson is also survived by 10 sisters, Pauline Wilson of Deer Island, Ore., Jeanette McLean of Kingman, Ariz., Jean Clary of Royal Oak, Mich., Ruth Mullins of Clinton, Launa West and Pat Maupin, both of Lake City, Rosemary Dennison of Knoxville, Cathy Rains of Speedwell, Connie Lowe of Pensacola, Fla., and Mageline Phipps of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, Jim Wilson of Redford, Mich., and Abe Wilson and Hank Wilson, both of Lake City; an aunt, Maycle Phillips of Oliver Springs; and by several nieces and nephews.

Another brother, Paul Wilson, died earlier.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Roger Nance officiating.

Burial was at Laurel Grove cemetery in Briceville.

Joseph Humphreys Erwin
Retired Y-12 operator

Joseph Humphreys Erwin, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Erwin was retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division as a process operator at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. He began his employment on Feb. 1, 1960, and retired on Jan. 31, 1975.

He was born in Bull's Gap on Nov. 6, 1912, the son of John Alvin and Leila Humphreys Erwin. His 27 years with the U.S. Navy included service in the Asiatic/Pacific theaters.

Mr. Erwin was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Knoxville Scottish Rite. His family described him as a soft-spoken, self-sacrificing man whose greatest interest was caring for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Marion Hope Ellenburg Erwin; two sons, Joseph R. Erwin of Oak Ridge and Steven M. Erwin and his wife, Andrea Maki Erwin, of San Antonio, Texas; and a grandson, Kyle Maki Erwin of San Antonio.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Johnson officiating. Burial will be at McCarty Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

Birdie Florence Hopson
Longfield Baptist member

Birdie Florence Welch Hopson, 80, of Clinton, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Hopson was a member of Longfield Baptist Church in Clinton.

She was born in Tazewell on April 7, 1917, the daughter of Samuel and Laura Welch, both now deceased.

Mrs. Hopson is survived by a daughter, Helen Hammons of Clinton; three sons, Leon Hopson and his wife, Lois, of Clairfield, Tenn., Jack Hopson and his wife, Betty, of Front Royal, Va., and the Rev. Cecil Hopson and his wife, Linda, of Owensboro, Ky.; and two sisters, Nelia Harper of Clinton and Jeanette Welch of Knoxville.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Darrell Hopson, Randall Hopson, Charles Hammons Jr., Lisa Cornett, David Hopson, Sonja Starkey and Ginger Hopson; and by 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Sunday, April 5, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Mack Smith officiating.

Burial followed at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

Charles Willard 'Buss' Loy
Retired Y-12 postal worker

Charles Willard "Buss" Loy, 81, of Clinton, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Loy was retired as a laborer in the postal department of the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. After his retirement, he worked for nine years at the convenience center in Briceville.

He was born in Andersonville on Oct. 16, 1916, the son of Bennett and Lucinda Newport Loy, both now deceased. He was a Baptist.

Mr. Loy is survived by his wife, Hattie Melton Loy; two sons, Albert Lee Loy and his wife, Peggy, of Halls, and Paul Joseph Loy and his wife, Gladys, of Clinton; one sister, Cooliage Wallace of Andersonville; one brother, R.G. Loy of Clinton; and by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

His first wife, Alice Loy, died earlier.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 4, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. James McCoy officiating.

A graveside service was held Sunday, April 5, at Red Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Andersonville.

Goldie Hazel Armstrong
Zion Baptist member

Goldie Hazel Armstrong, 79, of Powell, died at 6:25 Wednesday morning, Aug. 12, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Armstrong was a member of Zion Baptist Church of Claxton.

She was born in Jefferson County, Ala., on Oct. 19, 1918, the daughter of James and Lou Ada Lamberth.

Mrs. Armstrong is survived by her husband, Edward L. Armstrong; three daughters, Frankie Williams and her husband, Gary, of Guntersville, Ala., Sue Clark and her husband, Morris, of Deland, Fla., and Deborah Jenkins and her husband, Leon, of Clinton; two sons, Edward L. Armstrong Jr. and his wife, Janice, of Milledgeville, Ga., and Eugene Armstrong of Elkmont, Ala.; two sisters, Bonnie Day of Tarrant City, Ala., and Doris Butler of Brookside, Ala.; and a brother, Gene Lamberth of Birmingham.

She is also survived by grandchildren Joyce Perrin and Eugene Williams, both of Guntersville, Pamela C. Walker of Morganton, N.C., Danny Clark of Taber City, N.C., April and James Armstrong of Milledgeville, Stacy, Lee and Tanya Armstrong of Georgia, John Armstrong of Knoxville, and Brian Jenkins, Cynthia Jarnigan and Kimberly Summers, all of Clinton; and by 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Aug. 13, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Gary Swaggerty officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Garry Levi Farner
Lenoir City High senior

Garry Levi Farner, 17, of Lenoir City, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, in a drowning accident at Norris Dam.

Levi was a rising senior at Lenoir City High School and a member of the school's football team.

He was the son of Jan and Doug Edwards and of Garry and Kim Farner, all of Lenoir City. He attended Vaughns Chapel Baptist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, Levi is survived by his sister, Mandy Kelley and her husband, Michael; two brothers, Sam Edwards and Denim Beeler and his wife, Lisa; three stepsisters, Danielle Edwards, Tiana Edwards and Shannon Crawley; and his grandparents, Wesley and Lilly Farner of Maryville and Betty Edwards of Lenoir City.

Donna Hatcher, Laura Ball, Shawn Killebrew, Chad White and Isabell Cano were considered his best friends.

His grandparents Sonny and Judy Landon, Maxine and Ted Marsh and Sam Edwards, and an uncle, Jimmy Houser, all died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at First Baptist Church of Lenoir City. The Rev. Donny Crass and the Rev. Mike Gregory will officiate.

Burial will be at Lake View cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Davis, Billy Ford, Shawn Killebrew, Chad White, Matt Parr, Michael Kelley, Theo Brown and Adam Baker. Members of the Lenoir City High School football team are honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 tonight at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations for improvements in water safety to the Loudon Rescue Squad, 9000 Highway 11, West Lenoir City, TN 37771.

Anna Ruth Martin Honey
Pleasant View Baptist member

Anna Ruth Martin Honey, 86, of Clinton, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Honey was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Clinton.

She was born in Anderson County on Jan. 27, 1912, the daughter of Charles and Almeda Scruggs.

She is survived by her daughter, Reba Harmon and her husband, Joe, of Claxton; three sons, Truman Martin and his wife, Mary Lynn, of Clinton, Kenneth Martin and his wife, Pat, of Powell, and Lawrence Martin and his wife, Diane, of Plant City, Fla.; his sister, Bonnie Null of Andersonville; his brother, Roy Scruggs of Oak Ridge; and by seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Her husbands, Jess Martin and John Honey, and aother son, Willard Martin, all died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Earl Wilson and the Rev. Donnie Disney officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Pleasant View cemetery in Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Kenneth Thurmond
Former Oak Ridge resident

on Monday, August 24, 1998

Kenneth Thurmond, 89, of Rockford and a former resident of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville of congestive heart failure.

Mr. Thurmond formerly lived at 100 Dartmouth Circle.

He was born in Atlanta, Ga., on July 28, 1909, the eldest son of Harriett Eubank and Albert Kenneth Thurmond Sr., both now deceased.

Mr. Thurmond graduated from the University of Georgia and earned a master's degree in forestry from Yale University. He then entered the U.S. Forestry Service, taking various assignments in research, writing and forest management during his career. He worked in Orlando and Lake City, Fla., Oxford, Miss., Washington, D.C., and Norris, as well as in Arkansas and Puerto Rico.

While working in the Toro Negro Forest Reserve in Puerto Rico, he married the former Alice Swan Miles of Lake City, Fla., on March 8, 1937, in San Juan. The Thurmonds returned to the United States in 1939 to raise their family.

Mr. Thurmond served as a captain with the U.S. Air Force during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. In later years, he received an honorable discharge from the Air Force Reserve as lieutenant colonel. His family said he never lost his appreciation for his country or failed to fly its flag.

He practiced forestry with the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris until 1954, when he became an independent agent with State Farm Mutual Insurance in Oak Ridge. He and his wife lived here for 41 years.

His family described Mr. Thurmond as a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle. They said he relished the beauty of the Appalachian mountains, where he had practiced a lifelong love of nature, first as a Boy Scout scoutmaster, and later as a hiker/camper, applying his gift for photography.

Mr. Thurmond donated his extensive wildflower collection, amassed from the many trips he and his wife took, to the University of Tennessee.

Retired in 1976, he continued to garden and managed the family's tree farm near Harlam, Ga. Here he camped and for many years oversaw the clear-cutting, burning, planting and harvesting of both pine timber and pulpwood, with the help of his nephew, Mark Hopkins of Tallahassee, Fla., and others in the family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Pati Woodhull and her husband, Alec, of Rockford, and Aynn Gehron and her husband, Dick, of Charlotte, N.C.; his sister, Sara Lennard and her husband, Julius, of Atlanta; and his brother, Joe Thurmond and his wife, Sally, of Oregon.

Mr. Thurmond is also survived by six grandchildren, Shelby Trusley, Lauren Clevenger, Kenny Woodhull, Rich Gehron, Ali Crotts and Jake Gehron; and by eight great-grandchildren, four nieces and a nephew.

Another sister, Doris Thurmond Ford of St. Simons, Island, Ga., died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Gayle Brown officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church Wednesday.

A graveside service will be held at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Memorial Fund at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 212 N. Tulane Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Weatherford Mortuary is handling arrangements.
