Jason D. Altom

Jason D. Altom, 26, of Somerville, Mass., died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Altom was the son of Don and Dianna Altom of Oak Ridge. He was a 1989 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, the International Relations Club and the cross country and tennis teams and was a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist.

He graduated with highest honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

While at UNC, Mr. Altom was active in the Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. At the time of his death, he was working on his doctorate in organic chemistry at Harvard University.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Katherine Altom of Washington, D.C.; his maternal grandparents, Jim and Nora Belle Derreberry of Knoxville; his paternal grandparents, Conway and Jean Altom of Searcy, Ark.; his aunts, Sandy O'Donnell of Springfield, Maxine Curtis of Dallas, Texas, and Patty Gorney of Knoxville; and numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Weatherford Mortuary. A short service will follow.

A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Rev. Chris Lingerfelt will officiate at both services.

Due to allergic reactions to flowers, the family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to a charity of the donor's choice.

Samuel R. Darr
Retired MMES employee

Samuel R. Darr, 77, of Heiskell, died at 6:58 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Darr retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems after 29 years of service at the federal facilities in Oak Ridge, beginning when they were operated by Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He was employed in nuclear energy research and, according to his family, at the time of his death he was the oldest living nuclear reactor operator in the world.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. The family said he had a lingering illness from the war which ultimately caused his death. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Post No. 24.

Mr. Darr was the son of Samuel H. and Blanche Yarnell Darr, both now deceased. He was a member of Bishopville Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jewell Yoakum Darr; his daughter, Sandra Follis and her husband, Norman, of Heiskell; his son, Terry Lynn Darr, also of Heiskell; four grandchildren, Michael, Mary Lynn, Eric and Eddie; a great-grandson, Austin; a sister, Jackie Welch of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Bishopville cemetery in Heiskell. Members of the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites with full honors. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Aug. 19, at Stevens Mortuary, 1304 Oglewood Ave., Knoxville.

Sara Anne Winchester
First Baptist member

Sara Anne Winchester, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Winchester was an active member of First Baptist Church.

She was born in Whitley County, Ky., on Dec. 13, 1917, the daughter of G.S. and Nannie Johnson Hill. At the age of 11, she moved with her parents to Pruden, Tenn. There she met and later married her husband, Cecil V. Winchester, who survives her. The Winchesters celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Because of her husband's military career with the U.S. Marine Corps, the couple moved often. Her family described Mrs. Winchester as a homemaker whose devotion to her husband and children made every new house a home.

Her family said she was known and admired for her skills in needlework, baking and gardening, and she shared these talents with friends as well as family.

Following her husband's retirement after 30 years of service, the couple moved to Oak Ridge.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Winchester is survived by her two children, John Winchester and his wife, Joanne, of Alexandria, Va., and Judy Steen and her husband, Kent, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; her sister and brother, Jennie Hill and Gorman Hill, both of Oak Ridge; and by three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Dipboye officiating.

Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Weatherford Mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to First Baptist Church, 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830; or to Covenant Hospice, Attn: Steve Freeman, 183 Lafayette Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Hugh 'Pappy' Wyrick
Local antique dealer

Hugh McCampbell "Pappy" Wyrick, 94, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Wyrick retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in 1969 as a mechanical maintenance supervisor at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He worked restoring and selling antiques in the family business, Larry's Antiques, until entering the health care facility in 1996.

He was born in Mascot on May 26, 1904, the son of Turley Bailey and Gertrude Kirby Wyrick, both deceased. Mr. Wyrick worked in the zinc mines in Mascot and New Market before his move to Oak Ridge in 1945. His membership at Trinity United Methodist Church was nearly 50 years.

Mr. Wyrick, called "Pappy" by family and friends, was an avid collector of antiques and was well-known for repairing and restoring furniture at the Warehouse Road antique shop. He once said, "You can rescue a lot of good pieces of furniture if you can do the repair on them." He also enjoyed telling stories about the history of the pieces he worked on.

Other hobbies were collecting cameras, model trains and books and restoring cars. Mr. Wyrick also enjoyed collecting and planting wildflowers and growing roses. In past years he was an avid supporter of Oak Ridge High School football teams, attending games until he was 90, and was a regular browser at the local flea market.

Mr. Wyrick is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Eddlemon Wyrick; his son, Larry Wyrick, retired from Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, and his wife, Judy, of Oak Ridge; his daughter, Joan Houlihan and her husband, Tom, of Groton, Conn.; a granddaughter, Mary Laznovsky, and her husband, Aaron, of Worcester, Mass.; four grandsons, Chris and Tim Wyrick of Oak Ridge and Alan and John Houlihan of Groton; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Patrick Houlihan of Groton.

Also surviving are sisters Louise Williams of Oak Ridge and Betty Cook of Strawberry Plains; a nephew he considered special, Dewey Wyrick, and his wife, Judy, of Rockford; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Harmon, Virginia Dagley and Ann Wyrick, all of Oak Ridge; two brothers-in-law, Joe Eddlemon and Bud Eddlemon, both of Knoxville; and by several other brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Five brothers, Herman Wyrick, Joe Wyrick, William Wyrick, Arlie Wyrick and Ray Wyrick, and four sisters, Ann Compton, Carrie Kennemore, Etta Jones and Fay Wyrick, died earlier.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at the Mausoleum at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Rev. Michael Johnson will officiate at both services.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Trinity United Methodist Church, 320 Robertsville Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Gloria Jasny

Gloria Jasny, 69, of Oak Ridge, died this morning, Jan. 7, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.

Marjorie Hieber Mann
St. Mary's Catholic Church member

Marjorie Hieber Mann, 86, a resident of Briarcliff Health Care Center, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She had lived at the Oak Ridge Retirement Community before moving to the health care center and formerly lived at 104 E. Damascus Road.

Mrs. Mann was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She was born Nov. 13, 1911, in Utica, N.Y., the daughter of Theodore Hieber and Amelia Margaret Harrer. She was a graduate of Cornell University.

A resident of Oak Ridge since February 1947, she was the widow of Dr. E. Ray Mann, a physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Her family said she will best be remembered in the community for her passionate eccentricity, her inquisitive mind, her love of nature and concern for the environment, and her devotion to her pets.

Mrs. Mann is survived by three daughters, Margaret M. Weirich of Athens, Ga., Barbara L. Mann of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Linda K. Mann of Kingston; a sister-in-law, Leah Mann of Swannanoa, N.C.; and by two nieces and two nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Hofsteder officiating.

Burial of the ashes will be at a later date in Swannanoa.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 327 Vermont Ave.; Noah's Ark, 201 Oak Ridge Turnpike; or to the Oak Ridge Humane Society, 1345 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Suite 366, all Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Betty 'Betsy' Yoakley Steele
Former florist owner

Betty "Betsy" Yoakley Steele, 66, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Steele was the former owner of the floral shop, Bouquets by Betsy.

She was born in Kingsport. She and her husband, Charles K. Steele, by whom she is survived, came to Oak Ridge in 1952.

Mrs. Steele was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a member of the Oak Ridge Women's Republican Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Honeycutt of Clinton; a granddaughter, Monica Hill of Oak Ridge; and a great-granddaughter, Meghanne Hill, also of Oak Ridge.

She is also survived by two sisters, Kathleen Bond of DeLand, Fla., and Andrelle Mann of Gate City, Va.; and three brothers, Pete Yoakley of Gate City, Martin Yoakley of Elizabethton and Charles Yoakley of DeLand.

A short memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, in the chapel of McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Carter-McKinney cemetery in Duffield, Va. Friends and family will meet at the Gate City Funeral Home in Gate City at 1 p.m. to proceed to the cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge.

Alma Juanita Amos
Lake City resident

Alma Juanita Amos, 81, of Lake City, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Amos is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Stevens of Harriman and Lorene Day of Dayton, Ohio; four sons, Arnold Leon Amos of Chula Vista, Calif., and Jerry Amos, Billy Amos and Darryl Amos, all of Lake City; two sisters, Jean Burnside of Dayton, Ohio, and Edna Kyle of Oak Ridge; and by two brothers, Lonnie Towe of Atlanta, Ga., and Audry Towe of Harrisburg, Pa.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. George DeLozier officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Beech Grove cemetery in Lake City.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Imogene Arrington
Former Oak Ridge resident

Imogene Arrington, 79, of Sevierville, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Arrington and her husband, Jim Arrington, who survives her, lived in Oak Ridge from 1944 to 1982, when they moved to Sevierville. She owned Arrington's Fabrics in Solway.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Sevierville and the Order of Eastern Star.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Arrington is survived by four sons, Wayne Arrington and his wife, Barbara, of Clinton, Robert Lee Arrington of Mustang, Okla., Jimmy Arrington and his wife, Ann, of Knoxville, and Gene Arrington and his wife, Barbara, of Oak Ridge; and by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 7:30 tonight, Jan. 13, in the chapel of Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville with the Rev. Rich Liner and the Rev. Jerry Hyder officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the building fund at First Baptist Church, 317 Parkway, Sevierville, TN 37862.

Thelma D. Barker
Former Oak Ridge resident

Thelma D. Barker, 89, of Atlanta, Ga., died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at New London Nursing Home in Lilburn, Ga., where she had been a resident for more than three years.

Before moving to Georgia, Mrs. Barker had lived in Oak Ridge since June 1943. She and her husband, Newell Barker, also deceased, were members of First United Methodist Church, where she was active with United Methodist Women.

She enjoyed playing bridge, arranging flowers, cooking and being with her family, who described her as a much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Barker is survived by a son, James A. Barker Sr. of Hilton Head, S.C.; four grandchildren, James Barker Jr. and Byron Barker, both of Knoxville, Sherold Barr Kaib of Eugene, Ore., and Jennifer Bennett of Lilburn; and three great-grandchildren, Tara and Christie Barker, both of Knoxville, and Max Barr of Eugene.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge with the Rev. Ken Henderlight officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of the church.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
