Elsie Eisele Gradl, 85, of Flemington, N.J., died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township, N.J.

Mrs. Gradl was the mother of Carol Lyon of Oak Ridge.

She was born in Passaic, N.J., on Oct. 25, 1912, the daughter of John and Anna Sterl Eisele, and lived in Flemington for 70 years.

Mrs. Gradl and her husband, Frank Gradl, operated Gradl's Bakery & Restaurant in Flemington for several years in the 1930s and 1940s. Her husband died in 1968.

She was a member of St. Magdalen Church in Flemington.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Gradl is survived by a son, Frank Gradl of Flemington; two sisters, Carolyn Curtis of Flemington and Helen Pyatt of Lambertville, N.J.; a brother, John Eisele of Ringoes, N.J.; and by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine St., Flemington. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St., Flemington.

Ellen Beatrice Jenkins
Zion Baptist member

Ellen Beatrice Jenkins, 81, of Claxton, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital, Knoxville.

Mrs. Jenkins was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Claxton.

She was born in Heiskell on May 18, 1916, the daughter of Milton and Emma Frances Stephens.

Mrs. Jenkins is survived by two daughters, Betty Flick and her husband, Bobby, of Graham, N.C., and Pamela Carpenter and her husband, Roger Sawyer, of Memphis; and three sons, Glen Jenkins and his wife, Jean, of Claxton, Jim Jenkins and his wife, Glenda, of Graham, and Leon Jenkins and his wife, Deborah, of Clinton.

She is also survived by two sisters, Emma Lee Bunch and her husband, Freddie, of Knoxville, and Opel Yoakum of Nashville; three brothers, Floyd Stephens, David Stephens and Cecil Stephens, all of Knoxville; and by 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held this morning, Jan. 19, at Zion Baptist Church in Claxton with the Rev. Glenn Gamble and the Rev. Gary Swaggerty officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton handled arrangements.

Margaret Lawson Littleton
Retired Loudon County teacher

Margaret Lawson Littleton of Lenoir City died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at her home after a brief illness with cancer.

Mrs. Littleton was a former resident of Loudon where she was a teacher with the Loudon County School System and a piano teacher. She was a 1948 home economics graduate of the University of Tennessee.

She had been a church member for 42 years and was a member and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Lenoir City.

Mrs. Littleton is survived by her husband, Idus T. Littleton, who retired after 40 years of employment at the Y-12 Plant and K-25 Site; a son, Grayling Littleton and his wife, Joy; her mother, Lennie M. Lawson; an aunt, Lallie M. Burnette; a sister-in-law, Helen Lawson; two nieces, Clarius L. Watts and Janis L. Holifield; and by five nephews, Monty, Bruce and Byron Lawson, and by Robert B. and Pete K. Littleton.

Mrs. Littleton's father, Raymond A. "Bill" Lawson Sr., and a brother, Raymond A. "Bill" Lawson Jr., died earlier.

The funeral was held Sunday, Jan. 18, at First Baptist Church in Lenoir City with the Rev. Bill Wilkinson officiating.

Burial was at Loudon County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Jack Randolph, Jack Sartin, Jack Buchanan, Howard Cusick, Monty Lawson and Byron Lawson.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Faith to Victory Fund, First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 467, Lenoir City, TN 37771.

Harold Lee Spencer
Lockheed computer analyst

Harold Lee Spencer, 49, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Spencer was a computer analyst at Lockheed Martin Energy Systems. He began employment Oct. 27, 1969, when the plants were operated by Union Carbide Nuclear Division.

He attended Christ Community Church and was a member of Robertsville Baptist Church.

Mr. Spencer was born Nov. 5, 1948, in Huntington, W. Va., the son of Woodford F. Spencer and Jean Neff Spencer. His father died April 9, 1996, and his mother died June 28, 1980.

A brother, Woodford Tipton "Tip" Spencer, died July 7, 1972.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Wilde Spencer; and three daughters, Melissa Spencer, a senior at Oak Ridge High School, Natalie Spencer, an eighth-grade student at Robertsville Middle School, and Shannon Thomas of Houston, Texas.

Mr. Spencer is also survived by a sister, Barbara Mitchell, and her husband, Thomas, of Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Mary Rayl of Annandale, N.J.; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alma and Gene Wilde of Oak Ridge; and by one niece and three nephews.

The funeral was held this morning, Jan. 19, at Robertsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Jobe and the Rev. Michael Prince officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Christ Community Church, Dick Hochanadel, treasurer, 106 Claremont Road, Oak Ridge; Robertsville Baptist Church, 251 Robertsville Road, Oak Ridge; or to the American Cancer Society, Anderson County Unit, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

J.C. Lyons
Educator, husband of Peggy Lyons

J.C. Lyons, 64, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge of emphysema.

Mr. Lyons was a teacher and principal in the Knox County school system from 1962 until his retirement on June 1, 1990. He taught at several Knoxville schools, the last being Carter Middle School.

He was born in Knoxville on Nov. 15, 1933, the son of Jerry and Nettie Haynes Lyons. He was a graduate of Bearden High School and played on the Bearden football team. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

In 1962, Mr. Lyons graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College and was named to the dean's list. He entered the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship and graduated in 1965 with a master of science degree.

From approximately 1962 to 1978, through the Oak Ridge city-operated men's softball league, he coached a group of softball players from youth to adult leagues. Until his illness prevented participation, Mr. Lyons was an avid UT football fan, a scratch golfer and member of the Oak Ridge Country Club. In addition to sports, he enjoyed ceramics.

He and his wife of 38 years, Peggy Adkins Lyons, whom he married in Oak Ridge, had no children.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Lyons is survived by three sisters, Jo Ann Lyons, Tillie Hanshaw and Audrey Robeson, all of Knoxville; two brothers, Bill Lyons and Eugene Lyons and his wife, Margaret, all of Knoxville; two brothers-in-law, Tom Adkins and his wife, Barbara, of Oak Ridge, and Bill Adkins and his wife, Kay, of Delta, Ohio; and by many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Jesse Bradshaw officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to a charity of the donor's choice.

Elbert Glen Craig
Active in OS community

Elbert Glen Craig, 88, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He had been in poor health for a long time.

Mr. Craig was well-known in Oliver Springs, where he formerly had a radio/television business. He had also worked for the city's water commission, driven a school bus and performed several other duties over the years. Hunting and fishing were among his interests.

He retired in 1968 from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Born Feb. 8, 1909, he was the son of Arthur and Sarah Craig, both now deceased. He and his wife, O. Jean Ellis Craig, by whom he is survived, were married in Jacksboro on Aug. 7, 1938.

Mr. Craig was a lifelong resident of Oliver Springs and a member of First Baptist Church of Oliver Springs. He served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at the church for several years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jacquelyn Baiano of Shreveport, La., and Linda Mercer and her husband, Buddy, of Clinton; and a son, Jerry Craig and his wife, Phyllis, of Morgantown, W.Va.

Mr. Craig is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Mike Simmons, Deanna Simmons-Cunningham, Mechelle Craig, Kelley Craig-Dickens, Jimmy Harvey, Andrea Harvey-Gouge, Johnny Mercer, Marie Mercer, Greg Baiano and Debbie Baiano; and seven great-grandchildren, Colt Simmons, Stephanie Cunningham, Christopher Cunningham, Blake Cunningham, Amber Gouge, Jonathan Gouge and Brianna Mathis.

In addition to his parents, two brothers, York Craig and Sammy Craig, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Feb. 9, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. David L. Hanes and the Rev. Tony Rutherford officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

George W. Evans
Retired MMES security director

George W. Evans, 74, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Evans retired in 1989 from Martin Marietta Energy Systems and predecessor contractors at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. During his 45 years of employment, he held positions of increasing responsibility and played a leading role in the building of the lithium plant at Y-12.

In 1968, he was appointed manager of the Utilities and Shift Superintendent Operations, which included the fire, security and plant protection forces.

As manager, he had the lead role in putting in place the many safeguards and security upgrades implemented during the 1970s and '80s. In August 1985, Mr. Evans was assigned the oversight responsibility for security operations at all sites operated by Martin Marietta at Portsmouth, Ohio, Paducah, Ky., and Oak Ridge.

During his employment, he was the recipient of several awards and citations.

Mr. Evans was born in Twinton, Tenn., on Dec. 1, 1923, the son of Willie and Flora Evans, both now deceased. He moved to Cumberland County with his family when he was 10. He was a graduate of Cumberland County High School and lettered in football. He was also a veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the Oak Ridge Rotary Club and served as its president and as governor of his district, which consisted of more than 60 clubs. During his 27 years of membership, he had a record of perfect attendance and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

His belief in the "4-Way Test" and "Service Before Self" led him to work with many community service groups, including Camp Fire, helping the organization clear land for what would become Camp Tiyani. He also volunteered with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, the Oak Ridge 50th Birthday Celebration and the Elks Lodge as well as other organizations.

Mr. Evans was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge and of Faith Masonic Lodge in Oak Ridge.

He enjoyed farming at his family's farm on the Homesteads in Cumberland County. He also enjoyed horses when his children were at home, and was a member of the East Tennessee Riding Club. He was a past member of the Oak Ridge Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf.

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gladys Wimberly Evans; three daughters, Sandra Davidson and her husband, Tom, of Claxton, Susan Latham and her husband, Bobby, and Martha Barker and her husband, Richard, all of Oak Ridge; grandchildren Elsie Williams and her husband, Chuck, Christine Graham, Greg and Lindsey Barker, all of Oak Ridge, and Shana Davidson of Knoxville; and great-grandchildren Melanie and Lynn Williams of Oak Ridge.

He is also survived by four sisters, Margaret Boles of Oak Ridge, Willine Hyder and her husband, Billy, of Chattanooga, Mabel Mincey of Mattison, Ill., and Elizabeth Garcia and her husband, Tony, of Broadview, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Cleo Taylor and his wife, Virginia, of Crossville; a cousin-in-law, Neva Evans of Oak Ridge; sisters-in-law Bessie Harness and her husband, Dwaine, of Chesapeake Bay, Md., Mildred Browne of Arlington, Va., Nanthia Fleming and her husband, Leroy, and Lyvonne Frazier, all of Sweetwater, Myrtle Gilbert of Atlanta, Ga., and Ada Burke of Cleveland; and a brother-in-law, Larry Gilbert Wimberly and his wife, Barbara, of Oneida.

Also surviving are nieces and nephews Sylvia and Skippy Brinkman of Oak Ridge, Larris and Norene Boles of Tullahoma, Irene and Ben Scarbrough of Garland, Texas, Mark Garcia of Broadview, Ill., Darlene and Randy Johnston of Park Forest, Ill., Bill and Donita Mincey of Coal City, Ill., Bob Aspen of Matteson, Ill., Pam and Rick Johns of Talbott, Teresa and Donnie Smith of Nashville, Ruth and Art Woody of Fort Myers, Fla., William and Beth Ann Woody of Akron, Ohio, Shirley and Robert Mays and Jerry and Billy Burke, all of Cleveland, Charles and Nan Burke and Mitchell and Elissa Gilbert, all of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jesse and Linda Wimberly of Tellico Plains, Adele Browne Thayer of Ellicott, Md., Beverly and Stuart Browne of Arlington, Va., Donna and Jim Miller and Steve and Lisa Frazier, all of Sweetwater, Kevin Fleming of Texas, Annette and Tim Gilbert and Lori Dillard, all of Powder Springs, Ga., and Terry Wimberly of Springfield.

Mr. Evans is also survived by his cousin he considered a brother, Brian Rucker and his wife, Polly, of Livingston. He also considered his son-in-law Bobby Latham as a son, and his niece Sylvia Brinkman as a daughter.

Mary Jo Otten, Collen Gentry and Mary Ann Russell were his special secretaries and lifelong friends.

Relatives who died earlier are brothers-in-law Conway and Duggan Woody, Opal Taylor, Otto Boles and Bill Mincey, a cousin, Ray Evans Sr., sisters-in-law and other family members Beulah and Jimmy Thompson, Lou Wimberly, Mansel Frazier, Sonny Gllbert and Herb Browne; and grandnephews James Woody and Larry Burke.

The funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at First Baptist Church, 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike. A time of fellowship will follow.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Central Standard Time Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Crossville cemetery. Family and friends will meet at 1 p.m. at Burris Funeral Home in Crossville. Pallbearers are Mike Bradshaw, E.T. "Skippy" Brinkman, Jeffrey L. Day, Matthew A. Forester, Carl "Bubba" Scarbrough and Peter White. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Bibb, Bill Burgess, Dave Cope, Gordon Fee, B.B. Hopkins, Clyde Hopkins, Keith Kahl, Dave Mason, Harry Shatley and Charles Whittle.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Fred L. Henley
Retired mill worker

Fred L. Henley, 81, of Oliver Springs, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Henley worked at Roane Hosiery Mill for 31 years and retired in 1981.

He was born in Roane County on May 20, 1916, the son of Arthur Frank and Josephine Jett Henley, both now deceased. He had lived in this area all his life.

Mr. Henley was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Before serving his four years with the Army, he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority.

He was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church and for many years taught Sunday school classes at the church.

Mr. Henley is survived by his wife of 51 years, Suda Crabtree Henley; a brother, John Henley and his wife, Mary, of Oliver Springs; a sister-in-law, Lena Henley of Oliver Springs; an aunt, Minnie Christenberry and her husband, Ralph, of Seymour; and by several nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Mary Henley and Rhoda Mae Wright, and three brothers, Walter H. Henley, Luther Henley and Lester Henley, died earlier.

The funeral was held Tuesday night, March 10, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. E.D. Nelson officiating.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.
