William Clement Vaughn

William Clement Vaughn, 70, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, March 12, 1998, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.

Mr. Vaughn had been active with the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons and at the Oak Ridge Senior Center.

He was retired as a truck driver with South Bay Growers in South Bay, Fla.

Born in Alliance, Ohio, on Feb. 20, 1928, he was the son of Forrest and Elsie Brantingham Vaughn.

He and his wife, Mary Margaret Gressinger Vaughn, who survives him, had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 31.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Vaughn is survived by two daughters, Pat Connell and Debby Aloi and her husband, Michael, all of Oak Ridge; three sisters, Carol Waddell and Margaret Haines and her husband, Floyd, all of Alliance, and Dorothy Lasky and her husband, Cliff, of Hope Sound, Fla.; two brothers, Roger Vaughn of Louisville, Ohio, and Dale Vaughn and his wife, Jo Ann, of Akron, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Melissa Aloi, Joseph Aloi and Casey Aloi, all of Oak Ridge.

A sister, Geraldine Westra, died earlier.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 15, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Dan Whitman officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Oak Ridge Senior Center, Attn: Janice Thomas, P.O. Box 1, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-0001.

Billie Lorene Evans

Billie Lorene Evans of Waynesboro, Va., died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, in Waynesboro.

Mrs. Evans was the sister of Betty Johnson of 155 Wadsworth Circle. Reynolds Funeral Home in Waynesboro is handling arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.

The Rev. George E. Naff Jr.
Former Kern pastor

The Rev. George E. Naff Jr., 81, of Maryville died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville.

Mr. Naff was pastor of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge from 1965 to 1969.

He was born in Chattanooga on Dec. 30, 1916, the son of George Eakin and Lucinda Culton Bryant Naff. He was a 1936 graduate of Bradley Central High School in Cleveland and received the Balfour Award for Best All-Around Student. He was a 1939 graduate of Emory and Henry College and received a master of divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology of Emory University in 1942.

Mr. Naff pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Tennessee, Union Theological Seminary in New York, N.Y., and at Emory University. In 1971, Emory and Henry College awarded him an honorary doctor of divinity degree.

He began his pastoral career as associate pastor of Broad Street Methodist Church in Kingsport and subsequently had other pastoral appointments, including Kern Methodist in Oak Ridge.

Mr. Naff served as chaplain of Tennessee Wesleyan College from 1946 to 1951, and from 1975 to 1984 he served as president of Tennessee Wesleyan. Upon retirement, he continued to teach religion and philosophy and serve as campus minister at TWC for several years.

He moved to Maryville in 1992 and became chaplain of Asbury Acres Retirement Center, a position he held until his retirement in June 1997.

Mr. Naff served as trustee at Tennessee Wesleyan, Emory and Henry, and Hiwassee colleges, and at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

He served six years as district superintendent of the Maryville district of the United Methodist Church, and he had served as president of the Holston Methodist Home for Children and the Methodist Board of Christian Social Concerns and as registrar of the Methodist Board of Ministerial Training and its successor, the Board of the Ordained Ministry.

Throughout his life, he was actively involved in civic clubs and was especially active with CONTACT Ministries and interdenominational ministerial associations.

Mr. Naff is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ellen Steele Naff; two daughters, Nancy Naff Boardman of South Pittsburg, Tenn., and Ellen Naff and her husband, Art Kimball, of Athens; a son, George E. Naff III and his wife, Sue, of Boone, N.C.; and a sister, Nancy Stevenson of Johnson City.

He is also survived by a granddaughter, Whitney Steele Kimball; eight grandsons, Eric Naff, Joseph Naff, David Naff, Paul Boardman, Jason Boardman, Benjamin Boardman, Jordan Boardman and Andrew Kimball; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Athens with the Rev. Ashley Calhoun and the Rev. Frank M. Bostick officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 27, at the cemetery at Emory & Henry College in Emory, Va., with the Rev. James R. Green and the Rev. Charles Hurlock officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at McCammon-Ammons Funeral Home in Maryville.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the George E. Naff Jr. Scholarship Fund, Tennessee Wesleyan College, Athens, TN 37303.

Margaret McIntosh Pearson
Retired AEC secretary

Margaret McIntosh Kitts Russell Pearson, 82, of Clinton, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at Hillcrest West Nursing Home in Knoxville.

Mrs. Pearson was retired as a secretary after 30 years of service with the Atomic Energy Commission, a Department of Energy predecessor agency.

She was born in Boyce, Texas, on Oct. 28, 1915, the daughter of Louis and Minnie L. McIntosh. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Clinton.

Mrs. Pearson is survived by a daughter, Sandy Smith and her husband, Charles, of Knoxville; three stepchildren, Sara Rice and her husband, Neal, of Union City, Rhonda Barlow and her husband, Mike, of Cookeville, and Wayne Pearson and his wife, Greta, of Knoxville; one granddaughter, Donna Ritter and her husband, Mike, of Knoxville; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Trevor and Dylan Ritter.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 24, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating.

Burial will follow at Sunset cemetery in Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, April 23, at the funeral home.

Mary 'Maggie' Allen
Clinton resident

Mary "Maggie" Allen, 59, of Clinton, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, Alonzo Allen; six daughters, Vickie Aslinger, Linda Phillips, Rebecca Herrin and Mary Ann Jarnigan and her husband, David, all of Clinton, Karen Isabell and her husband, Tom, and Debbie Lloyd and her husband, Frank, all of Campbell County; and four sons, Charles Phillips and Buster Phillips and his wife, Cherie, all of Clinton, David Phillips and his wife, Betty Jean, of Oliver Springs, and Robert Phillips and his wife, Lori, of California.

She is also survived by three sisters, Pearl Williams, June Byrge and Josephine Pyke; and three brothers, Dennis Stittums, Paul Stittums and Jimmy Stittums.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 27, in the chapel of Anderson County Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Jimmy Davidson officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Clarence V. Bracken
World War II veteran

Clarence V. Bracken, 73, of Knoxville, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Bracken spent more than 50 years in the auto parts business. He was a Baptist and a Mason as well as a military veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue Lusby Bracken; one son, Dan Bracken and his wife, Carrol, of Tallahassee, Fla.; a brother and a sister, Sam Bracken of Nashville and Margaret Freels of Sebring, Fla.; one son-in-law, Bobby Stephens of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Brandi Stephens, Jennifer and Christy Bracken and Jamin and Kim Keillor; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah Mathews and Jackson Keillor.

The funeral was held at 8 p.m. Friday, June 26, in the chapel of McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Lusby and Don Hurst officiating.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

Irene Campbell

Billie S. Gallaher

Billie S. Gallaher, 67, of Rivers Court, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Gallaher was an active member of the Oak Ridge Bridge Association and was a Duplicate Bridge Life Master.

A former resident of Clinton, she was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Clinton.

She was the daughter of Ruby Lawson Foster, who is deceased, and the widow of William T. Gallaher Sr. Her family described her as a devoted mother, wife and grandmother.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Gamble of Clinton and Carol Taylor and her husband, David, of Clemmons, N.C.; a son, Charlie Armstrong of Andersonville; a stepdaughter, Cindy Matthews and her husband, David, of Harrisburg, N.C.; and two stepsons, Mike Gallaher and Bill Gallaher Jr. and his wife, Mary Francis, all of Clinton.

Mrs. Gallaher is also survived by her grandchildren, Ben Gamble, Holly Gamble, Mark Kreis, Jason Gallaher, Will Gallaher and Ashley Gallaher, all of Clinton, John David Taylor and Caroline Taylor, both of Clemmons, and Matthew Armstrong of Memphis; two sisters, Joy Reno Johnson and her husband, Stan, of Knoxville, and Patty Fulghum and her husband, Wayne, of Douglasville, Ga.; a brother, Sonny Lawson and his wife, Charlotte, of Lenoir City; and by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton with the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating.

Dean Reno, Jason Gallaher, John David Taylor, Ben Gamble, David Taylor, Stan Lawson, Bill Gallaher Jr. and Mike Gallaher will be pallbearers. Dr. P.J. Wenk, Garnett Kincaid and Ed Jones are honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, June 29, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Memorial United Methodist Church, 323 N. Main St., Clinton, TN 37716; or to the Clinton Public Library, 118 S. Hicks St., Clinton, TN 37716.

Mary Owena Raines

Mary Owena Raines, 63, of Solway, died of cancer Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Raines was the owner of Solway Exxon.

She Raines is survived by her husband, Xen "Red" Raines; two daughters, Yvonne Leffew and her husband, Howard, of Solway and Susan Burleson and her husband, Kerry, of Johnson City; five sons, John Raines and his wife, Arlene, Ray Raines and his wife, Janie, Donald Raines and his wife, Donna, and Dewayne Raines and his wife, Angela, all of Knoxville, and Phil Raines and his wife, Linda, of Morristown; her mother, Linnie Mae Kolle of Huntsville, Ala.; and by 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Her father, John Kolle, died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Mickey Leffew officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 9:45 at the cemetery.

Friends may call at their convenience at the home of Yvonne Leffew in Solway.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Methodist Regional Cancer Center, MMC Foundation, 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Bertha A. Bodmer
Mother of Oak Ridge resident

Bertha A. Bodmer, 84, of Bath, Maine, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Winship Green Nursing Home in Bath, where she had lived for the past few years.

Mrs. Bodmer was the mother of Edward S. Bodmer Jr. of Oak Ridge.

She was born in East Blackstone, Mass., on Oct. 16, 1913, the daughter of Alfred A. and Alice Simard Garneau. She was educated in the schools of Woonsocket and Franklin, Mass.

She and her husband, the late Edward S. Bodmer, were married in 1933. He died in 1972, and in 1977 she moved to Bath.

Mrs. Bodmer was a member of St. Mary's Church, Our Lady's Sodality, Daughters of Isabella Cosmopolitan Club, Bath Area Senior Citizens and Montsweag Farm Extension.

In addition to her local son, she is survived by another son, Gerald A. Bodmer of Westport, Maine; a sister, Lucille LaCauture of Pascoag, R.I.; four brothers, Leo Garneau of South Bellington, Mass., Ernest Garneau of West Palm Beach, Fla., Eugene Garneau of Attleboro, Mass., and Edgar Garneau of Farmington, Mich.; five grandchildren, including Jeri Bodmer Echols of Oak Ridge and Diedre Ruth Nation of Kingston; and six great-grandchildren, including Emily Ruth Nation.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at St. Mary's Church in Bath with the Rev. Joseph McKenna officiating. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery in North Grafton, Mass.

David E. Desmond Funeral Service in Bath is handling arrangements.
