Joe Leon Mitchell

Joe Leon Mitchell, 62, of Clinton, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Mitchell was an electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 270 in Oak Ridge.

He was born in Anderson County on Aug. 22, 1935, the son of Joe and Inez Mitchell, both now deceased.

Mr. Mitchell was a member of Alpha Masonic Lodge No. 376 and a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Albright Mitchell; two daughters, Mary Lea Mitchell and Sheryl K. Waldo, both of Clinton; a son, Michael Joe Mitchell and his wife, Sandra, of Clinton; a sister, Hazel Wallace of Clinton; and a brother, Sam B. Mitchell of Knoxville.

Mr. Mitchell is also survived by two grandchildren, Joshua Lee Waldo and Jamie Leigh Mitchell, both of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews.

A Masonic service was held Sunday night, Aug. 2, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. The funeral followed, with the Rev. Mark Smith officiating.

A graveside service was to be held at 2 this afternoon, Aug. 3, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

John Preston Murray
Retired from Tennessee Tool

John Preston Murray, 70, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at his home in Oliver Springs.

Mr. Murray was born in Washington County, Va., on March 30, 1928, and moved to Oliver Springs in 1965.

He had retired from Tennessee Tool & Engineering after 17 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Murray, of Oliver Springs; two sons, Douglas Preston Murray of Knoxville and James Ray Murray of Oliver Springs; a stepdaughter, Joann Bell of Knoxville; a brother, Leon R. Murray of Blountville; and three grandchildren, Jacob Murray, Joey Murray and Kimberly Ann Murray.

Two sons, John David Murray and Samual Lee Murray, a sister, Matilda C. Murray, and a stepson, Vernard Lewis, all died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Family and friends will assemble at 10:45 a.m.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Aug. 3, at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

William Avery Thomason Jr.
Oliver Springs truck driver

William Avery Thomason Jr., 60, of Oliver Springs, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Thomason was a truck driver for 34 years. He had worked for Walls & Coker Coal Co. and Daniels Trucking.

He was born in Anderson County on Jan. 17, 1938, the son of Ione Dunlap and William Avery Thomason Sr., both now deceased.

Mr. Thomason attended the Independent Church of God of Harriman.

He is survived by two daughters, Debbie Plemons of Knoxville and Sharron Miller of Harriman; two sons, Ricky Patterson of Oliver Springs and Gary Thomason of Harriman; a sister, Betty Spears of Harriman; and three grandchildren, Crystal Thomason, Bradley Thomason and Nickey Patterson.

His wife, Jackie Louise Thomason, died in 1994.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Jimmy Presley officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Aug. 3, at the funeral home.

Florence Halbert
Mother of Melvyn Halbert

Florence Nachman Halbert, 90, died at Baptist Hospital in Miami, Fla., on Aug. 2, 1998.

She was the mother of Melvyn L. Halbert, 104 Morgan Road.

Mrs. Halbert made many friends in Oak Ridge during visits here between 1957 and 1995, her son said.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Nov. 14, 1907, she moved to New York City in 1931 with her husband and son.

In 1990, after 55 years in the same house in the Briarwood section of Queens, she moved to Miami.

While in New York and Miami, she maintained close relationships with her family in Philadelphia and many friends of long standing, her son said.

While living in New York, she was very active in the Jamaica chapter of Women's American Organization for Rehabilitation through Training, which provides technical education and training in its schools in Israel and other countries. She served as president of her chapter for many years.

Besides her son and his wife, Edith C. Halbert, she is survived by one daughter, Diane H. Kolyer, of Miami; three grandsons, who all grew up in Oak Ridge, Daniel C. Halbert, of West Newton, Mass., Joel M. Halbert, of Tucson, Ariz., and Alan L. Halbert, of Nashville, and three grandchildren in Miami, Risa Kolyer, Stephan Kolyer and Alexander Kolyer.

Other survivors include six great-grandchildren, two each in West Newton, Tucson and Nashville; three sisters and one brother.

She was buried in Roosevelt Memorial Park in Philadelphia on Aug. 4.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Women's American ORT, 315 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10010.

Delores Gail Lane Johnson
Worked at Rockwood Sportswear

Delores Gail Lane Johnson, 46, of Harriman, and a former resident of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville after a four-year battle with cancer.

She was born in Oliver Springs on Sept. 4, 1951. She lived in Oak Ridge, then moved to Russellville, Tenn., and Point Marion, Pa., before moving to Harriman in 1986.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and also worked at Rockwood Sportswear Co. She enjoyed sewing and growing flowers, especially roses, according to her family.

Described by her family as a devoted Christian, she was a member of Faith Primitive Baptist Church of Harriman. She was a Camp Fire Girls counselor at Fall Creek Falls State Park and was very active in the Band Parents Association at Harriman High School.

Her family said she was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and who was known for her sense of fun, her sense of humor and her loving ways.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, Boyd "Buddy" Nathan Johnson; three sons, Brian Johnson, Kevin Johnson and Chris Johnson, all of Harriman; and a daughter, Dawn Johnson Elwartowski and her husband, Will Elwartowski, also of Harriman.

She is also survived by her parents, Dorothy and Leroy Lane of Oliver Springs; a sister and four brothers, Diane Lane, Doug Lane, Dwight Lane, David Lane and Darrell Lane, all of Oliver Springs; her father- and mother-in-law, James Louis and Elsie S. Johnson of Harriman; a sister-in-law, Sharon Johnson Patterson of Rockwood; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral was held Friday, July 3, at Scarborough Memorial Free Methodist Church in the Poland area of Harriman, with the Rev. Walter Nichols and the Rev. Thomas Scarbrough officiating. A graveside service was held at Emory Heights cemetery.

Davis Funeral Home in Harriman handled arrangements.

Bill Robbins
Resident of Lake City

Bill Robbins, 87, of Lake City, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

He is survived by his wife, Retha Elmore Robbins; two sons, Ira Marlow and his wife, Elizabeth, of Jacksboro and Jerry Marlow and his wife, Cherryl, of Meridian, Miss.; two daughters, Darlene Estes and her husband, Roy, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Nellie Mullikan and her husband, Andrew, of Charleston, S.C.; a sister and a brother, Charlotte Premo and Raymond Robbins; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City.

Burial will follow at Ridgeview cemetery in Caryville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Aug. 7, at the funeral home.

James Carl Steele
Retired from Taylor's Auto Parts

James Carl Steele, 90, of Clinton, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Briarcliff Health Care Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Steele was born in Anderson County on Dec. 23, 1907, the son of Thomas and Annie Steele, both now deceased.

He worked for 30 years at the former Magnet Mills in Clinton and retired from Taylor's Auto Parts.

He was a member of Black Oak Baptist Church of Clinton.

Mr. Steele is survived by his daughter, Kay Adams of Boulder, Colo.; his son and daughter-in-law, William and Sue Steele of Athens, Ga.; four grandchildren, Becky Steele, Adam Steele, Randy Steele and Tony Steele; and three great-grandchildren, Kandice Steele, Gwen Steele and Helayna Steele.

He is also survived by his sister, Hazel Monroe of Pine Ridge, La.; his brother, Elmer Earl Steele of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews.

His wife, Anna Mae Steele, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 6:30 tonight, Aug. 7, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. Following the service, the family will receive friends.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

Bobbie Ruth Campbell
South Clinton Baptist member

Bobbie Ruth Bennett Campbell, 61, of Clinton, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Campbell was a member of South Clinton Baptist Church.

She was born in Climax, Ga., on Dec. 20, 1936, the daughter of Homer and Gussie Boyett Bennett, who are now deceased.

Mrs. Campbell is survived by her husband, George Frank Campbell; two daughters, Kimberly Patterson and her husband, Daniel, of Oliver Springs, and Candace Watson and her husband, Jeff, of Clinton; her son, Robert Campbell and his wife, Karen, of Clinton; three sisters, Cristine Taylor, Jackie Koon and Edith Fields, all of Georgia; and two brothers, Candler Bennett and Wayne Bennett, both of Georgia.

She is also survived by six grandchildren, Travis Williams, Hillary Patterson, Jessica Watson, Aaron Watson, Jeremy Campbell and Kara Campbell; her mother-in-law, Mona Elizabeth Bryant of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, Aug. 20, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Archer Corder officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Gascal Jackson
Former Oak Ridge resident

Gascal Jackson, 78, of Gallatin, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, in Gallatin.

Mr. Jackson was a former resident of Oak Ridge and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. He was also a Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite, the Masonic lodge and the Shriners.

He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, Mildred Crownover Jackson; his daughter, Wanda Jackson of Gallatin; his brother, Mayford Jackson of Crossville; four sisters, Ethelene Brock of Oak Ridge and Odene Collins, Norma Jean Inman and Dellaphine Bolin, all of Crossville; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, Kelly and Prietta Barnes Jackson, and another brother, Ralph Jackson, died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Central Time Saturday, Aug. 22, at Crestview Memorial Park in Gallatin with the Rev. Mike Corbin officiating. Mr. Jackson's nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Alexander Funeral Home in Gallatin.

Homer Gillespie Amerine Jr.
Retired from Union Carbide

Homer Gillespie "H.G." Amerine Jr., 82, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Baptist Hospital in Knoxville.

Mr. Amerine was retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in Oak Ridge and had previously worked for 15 years at Magnet Mills in Clinton.

Described by his family as a committed Christian, he had been a lifelong member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Clinton. He was also a longtime supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.

He was born in Clinton on Aug. 7, 1916, the son of Homer and Lela Amerine.

Mr. Amerine is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alberta Jennings Amerine; his son, Larry Amerine and his wife, Nancy, of Elizabethton; his daughter, Judy Russell and her husband, Jerry, of Maryville; grandchildren Kristine Amerine, Jennifer Walker and her husband, Lynn, Jessica Russell, Jeremy Russell and José Russell; and a great-grandson, Benjamin Walker.

He is also survived by two sisters, Mildred Harris of Oak Ridge and Margaret Tomlinson and her husband, Scotty, of Chattanooga; three sisters-in-law, Marie Amerine, Margaret M. Amerine and Margaret A. Davis; a brother-in-law, Dwight Ellis; and by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to his parents, another sister and three brothers, Verona Ellis, Lonas Amerine, Rowan Amerine and Kyle Amerine, all died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 7 tonight, Aug. 26, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton. The Rev. Warren Wattenbarger, assisted by Jerald W. Russell, will officiate.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Sunset cemetery in Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight at the church.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Memorial United Methodist Church, 323 N. Main St., Clinton, TN 37716.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements.
