Gwendolyn Adele McLaughlin, 78, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at her residence.

Mrs. McLaughlin was a member of the Foothills Craft Guild and of the Southern Highland Handicrafts Guild. Among her interests was making notecards from pressed wildflowers.

Mrs. McLaughlin was a member of the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, of Oak Ridge. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club in Clinton.

She was the widow of Lawrence McKinley McLaughlin.

She was born in Morgantown, W.Va., on Oct. 13, 1919, the daughter of Ruth Correll Shale and John Preston Sr.

Mrs. McLaughlin is survived by a daughter, Marsha Ann Grissom and her husband, Kenneth Grissom, of Oak Ridge, and two sons, Dr. Victor Wayne McLaughlin and his wife, Pamela McLaughlin, of Oak Ridge, and Phillip Gary McLaughlin and his wife, Angele McLaughlin, of Spartanburg, S.C.

Mrs. McLaughlin is also survived by eight grandchildren, Melanie McKinley McLaughlin of San Francisco, Calif., Dr. Emily Blackburn McLaughlin and her husband, Dr. Hank Schmidt, of Augusta, Ga., Michael Preston McLaughlin of Nashville, Chad Ross McLaughlin of Atlanta, Ga., Lindie Shale of New Orleans, La., Dr. Kerry Conerly of Spartanburg and Tommy Grissom and Larry Grissom, both of Oak Ridge.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

They request that any memorials be in the form of donations to Covenant Hospice, 183 Lafayette Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements.

Mildred Gazave Rhea
St. Mary's Church member

Mildred Gazave Rhea, 91, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, in South Carolina.

Mrs. Rhea was a former Oak Ridge resident and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She moved to South Carolina in 1997.

She was born in New Orleans, La., on Jan. 31, 1907, the daughter of Gustave Gazave and Wilhelmina Gazave.

Mrs. Rhea came to Oak Ridge in 1947 with her husband, Buford Rhea, who was employed with the Atomic Energy Commission. She and her husband were involved in many local civic affairs, the family said. Mr. Rhea died earlier.

Mrs. Rhea was a homemaker and was an avid gardener and bridge player, according to the family.

She is survived by a son, Gordon C. Rhea and his wife, Catherine, of Mount Pleasant; one granddaughter, Rhoda Ellen Cerny of North Carolina; a stepson, Booth Buford Rhea Jr., of Greenville, N.C.; and a sister, Thais Scroope of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

In addition to her husband, a daughter, Rhoda Lee Rhea, died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Rev. Gilbert Diaz of St. Mary's will officiate.

Olivia Chatard Norton
Wellness Community, CHADD worker

Olivia Chatard Norton, 39, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at her home of cancer.

Mrs. Norton had been actively involved with the Wellness Community of Knoxville, an ongoing cancer support center that offers programs to cancer patients and their families. She was also active with CHADD, Children with Attention Deficit Disorders.

She was born in Baltimore, Md., on March 20, 1958, the daughter of J. Albert and Olivia E. Chatard. She had lived in Oak Ridge for the past five years.

Mrs. Norton was a member of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church and was a member of its board.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen J. Norton; a daughter, Sarah Marie, and a son, David William, both of Oak Ridge; and a brother, J. Albert Chatard III of Baltimore.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at the United Church, Chapel on the Hill.

The burial service will be private.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830; or to the Wellness Community, 1844 Terrace Ave., Knoxville, TN 37916.

Ardill Griffith
Retired from Union Carbide

Ardill Griffith, 89, of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Griffith retired in 1972 after 18 years of employment with Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He had also worked in logging, farming and mining.

He was born in Scott County on Oct. 24, 1908, the son of Maynard and Armalda Newport Griffith. He had lived in Oliver Springs since 1948.

Mr. Griffith was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church of Oliver Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Griffith, whom he married in 1932; four daughters, Carolyn Swails, Willie Henley and her husband, Kendall, and Phyllis Massengill and her husband, Doug, all of Oliver Springs, and Christine Wolford and her husband, Halsey, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and seven sons, Hobert Griffith, Bobby Griffith, Homer Griffith and his wife, Kathy, and Demcie Griffith and his wife, Sharon, all of Oliver Springs, Maynard Griffith and Odie Griffith, both of Wartburg, and Gaylon Griffith of Carthage, Miss.

Mr. Griffith is also survived by 38 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Claude Griffith, two sisters, Cloda Bowling Day and Angie Lettie Bowling, and five brothers, Esau Griffith, Sylvester Griffith, Joe Griffith, Harlan Griffith and McKinley Griffith, died earlier, as did his grandchildren Nancy and Ida Mae Bladen, Jason Griffith and Miranda and Brandon Shoffner.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Garvan Walls and the Rev. Milford Ealy officiating.

Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight, March 4, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.

Patricia Estes Richardson
Dutch Valley resident

Patricia Ann Estes Richardson, 55, of the Dutch Valley community in Clinton, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at her home.

She is survived by her husband, Brad Richardson; three daughters, Elizabeth Evans and Lois Murphy and her husband, Dennis, all of Nashville, and Donna Hawkins and her husband, Rex, of Lake City; a son, Ray Givens and his wife, Tammy, of Clinton; her mother, Bertha Lawrence of Norris; and a brother, Jerry Estes of Lake City.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Covenant Life Worship Center in Lake City with the Rev. Tony McAfee officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City is handling arrangements.

Clifton Hayes Sweet
Founder of Sweet Estates

Clifton Hayes Sweet, 84, of Clinton, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Sweet was a retired home builder and the founder of Sweet Estates in Clinton.

He was born in Anderson County on Sept. 30, 1913, the son of John and Nancy Duncan Sweet. He was a member of Batley Baptist Church of Clinton and had been a member of Clinton Alpha Masonic Lodge No. 376 for the past 50 years.

Mr. Sweet is survived by four daughters, Shirley Ann Haroldson and her husband, James, of Tullahoma, Carolyn Page and her husband, Steve, of Clinton, Merelyn Young and her husband, Jim, of Heiskell, and Glenda Smith and her husband, Bill, of Falls Church, Va.; and a son, Charles Sweet and his wife, Virginia, of Clinton.

He is also survived by a sister, Hallie Haney of Clinton, and 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Gertrude Queener and Jess Weaver, both of Clinton, were considered special friends.

His wife, Maude Sweet, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Luke Kidwell, the Rev. Lee Kidwell and Bill Smith officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Fred L. Henley
Retired mill worker

Fred L. Henley, 81, of Oliver Springs, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Henley worked at Roane Hosiery Mill for 31 years and retired in 1981.

He was born in Roane County on May 20, 1916, the son of Arthur Frank and Josephine Jett Henley, both now deceased. He had lived in this area all his life.

Mr. Henley was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Before serving his four years with the Army, he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority.

He was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church and for many years taught Sunday school classes at the church.

Mr. Henley is survived by his wife of 51 years, Suda Crabtree Henley; a brother, John Henley and his wife, Mary, of Oliver Springs; a sister-in-law, Lena Henley of Oliver Springs; and an aunt, Minnie Christenberry and her husband, Ralph, of Seymour.

Two sisters, Mary Henley and Rhoda Mae Wright, and three brothers, Walter H. Henley, Luther Henley and Lester Henley, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, March 10, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. E.D. Nelson officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Lillian Lowe
Sister of Clinton resident

Lillian Lowe, 81, of Caryville, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at the Lake City Health Care Center.

Mrs. Lowe is survived by three sons, Dean Lowe of Michigan and Roger Lowe and Jimmy Lowe, both of Caryville; and a sister, Maddy Lowe of Clinton.

The funeral was held Sunday night, March 8, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City.

A graveside service was held Monday morning, March 9, at New Vasper cemetery in Vasper.

Howard Martin Bedell
Retired sales vice president

Howard Martin Bedell, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Bedell was retired as vice president of sales with Walter C. McCrone Associates.

He was born in Rome, Ohio, on Feb. 8, 1912, the son of Seth and Cora Hatch Bedell.

Mr. Bedell was first employed with Republic Steel in Cleveland, Ohio. He later was employed during World War II at Goodyear Aircraft Corp., in Akron, Ohio. There he developed a wide range of uses for the spectrograph in analyzing materials.

In 1945, he formed National Spectrographic Laboratories Inc. in Cleveland to manufacture the spectrograph and related equipment. He formed the National Spectrographic Sales Corp. in 1947 for the distribution of the equipment and the support services for it. Oak Ridge National Laboratory was one of its customers.

Mr. Bedell appeared as a cover feature and lead article in Business Week magazine on Feb. 21, 1953.

He had a pilot's license during his career years and enjoyed flying small aircraft, his family said. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Akron. Here he belonged to Robertsville Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Dean Burleson Bedell; a daughter, Harriet Bolin and her husband, Robert, of Deland, Fla.; two sons, J. Robert Bedell of New York, N.Y., and James Howard Bedell and his wife, Ellen, of Clearwater, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Beverly Sweden, Emily Sweeden Sammons and her husband, Bill, all of Oak Ridge, and Alice Sweeden; and two stepsons, Larry Sweeden and his wife, Gail, of Oak Ridge, and Robert Lee Bedell of Miami, Fla.

Mr. Bedell is also survived by grandchildren Kirk Bedell of San Francisco, Calif., Lisa Bedell, a student at Princeton University, the Rev. Beth Fogle-Miller and her husband, the Rev. Jim Fogle-Miller, of Sanford, Fla., Kathy Hart and her husband, Dan, of Atlanta, Ga., Brett Bedell and Brooke Bedell, both of Wayne, N.J., and James Bedell and Robbie Bedell, both of Clearwater; and step-grandchildren Michael Sweeden and Ricky Sweeden, Victor Connelly and his wife, Carolyn, David Connelly and his wife, Mary, Letitia Moore Valdez and her husband, Julio, and Matthew Moore, all of Oak Ridge, John Sweeden and his wife, Misty, of Knoxville, Robert Lee Bedell Jr. and Sarah, Vicky and Joanna Bedell, all of Miami, Fla., and Chris Greene.

Also surviving are great-grandchildren Carlene Fogle-Miller of Sanford, Fla., Ashley Sweeden and Jessica Sweeden, Zachary Dunn, Rebecca Sweeden, Erika Sweeden, Christina Connelly, Victor Connelly II, Kayla Bell, Heather Connelly, Alex Connelly and Maria Valdez.

A grandson, Alan Varnadore, died in 1988, and a great-granddaughter, Karyn Connelly, died in 1987.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, April 13, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Prince and the Rev. Beth Fogle-Miller officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the mortuary.
