Charles Edward Shubert
Father of Oak Ridger

Charles Edward Shubert, 74, died at his home in Keystone Heights, Melrose, Fla., on Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998.

Mr. Shubert had lived in Florida for the past 20 years. He was born in Lenoir City on Feb. 17, 1923, the son of Joe Edward "Buck" and Grace Aiken Shubert, both now deceased.

He was retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he was a supervisor in the metallurgy division.

Mr. Shubert was a member of the First Baptist Church of Keystone Heights in Florida and a former member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and served in the Philippines.

He and his wife, Lucille Kerley Shubert, who survives him, had been married for 28 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, JoAnn Shubert Oran of Oak Ridge and Lucinda Jobe and her husband, Jim, of Luxembourg; and four sons and their wives, Eddy and Doris Shubert, Bob and Rhonda Shubert, Tommy and Debbie Shubert, all of Lenoir City, and Billy and Debbie Shubert of Seymour, Ind.

He is also survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Wayne Howell and Mary and Kyle Stooksbury, all of Lenoir City; a brother and sister-in-law, Benny and Fannie Rhea Shubert of Lenoir City; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law and wife, Paul "Booge" and Ursula Kerley of Lenoir City; a sister-in-law and husband, Aldene and J.W. Wilburn, of Lenoir City; and several special nieces and nephews.

His first wife, Jeanette Price Shubert, died earlier, as did a son, Jimmy Shubert, a sister, Sara Nelle Shubert, two brothers, Jimmy Shubert and Billy Shubert, and a son-in-law, Jack Oran.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in the chapel at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. The Rev. Dick DeMerchant will officiate.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Lakeview cemetery in Lenoir City.

The grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Cleon Smith Hartman Sr.
Former OR, Solway resident

Cleon Smith Hartman Sr., 63, of Chattanooga, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at the Tennessee Veterans Administration Hospital in Johnson City.

Mr. Hartman was a former resident of Oak Ridge and the Solway community. He was born in Knoxville on Oct. 12, 1934, the son of Orel Cleon and Hazel Smith Hartman of Guinn Road in Solway. His parents are now deceased.

He graduated from Karns High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Tank Division in Europe. Upon returning to the states, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

After working for Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, Mr. Hartman went into business, opening an insurance office in Oak Ridge.

During the 1960s, he was very active as an officer in the Oak Ridge Jaycees and was instrumental in the formation of the Sertoma Club. In 1973, he moved to Chattanooga, where he constructed various shopping centers.

Mr. Hartman is survived by a son, Cleon Smith Hartman II and his wife, Kim Hartman, of Oak Ridge; three grandchildren, April Denise, Tanner Ross and Reid Austin Hartman, all of Oak Ridge; a stepdaughter, Denise Leslie Dunlap of Nashville; and a sister, Mary Jo Fox and her husband, Earl Cobb Fox, of Pigeon Forge.

He is also survived by a nephew, Robert Earl "Bobby" Fox and his wife, Leslie Fox, and their daughter, Reilly Kathryn Fox, all of Knoxville; an uncle, Carl Hartman of Knoxville; two aunts, Naomi Cagle and Norma Sparks, both of Solway; and by many cousins and other relatives in Knoxville, Oak Ridge and Solway.

A military funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at East Tennessee Veterans cemetery, 5901 Lyons View Pike, Knoxville. The Rev. Bob Tripp of Pigeon Forge United Methodist Church will officiate.

Pallbearers are Cleon Hartman II, Bobby Fox, Earl Cobb Fox and Boyd Hartman.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at McCarty Weaver Cumberland Memorial Chapel, 5815 Western Ave., Knoxville.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6014, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

Chalmer Duncan

Chalmer Duncan, 79, of Clinton, died at 5:55 this morning, Feb. 4, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.

Kim P. Yarnell
Retired from Southern Railway

Kim P. Yarnell, 87, of Clinton, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Yarnell was retired from Southern Railway.

He was born in Clinton on Dec. 12, 1910, the son of Willie and Margaret Yarnell. He was a member of South Clinton Baptist Church and of Clinton Alpha Masonic Lodge No. 376, F&AM.

Mr. Yarnell is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Bullock and her husband, Pete, of Lake City; a son, Charles Yarnell of Clinton; two grandsons, Chris Yarnell and Aaron Byrd; a step-granddaughter, Danielle Hatmaker; and by three step-grandsons, Nathan Bullock, Travis Bullock and Nathaniel Bullock.

He is also survived by four sisters, Lucinda Yarnell, Rachel Yarnell and Norean Tripp, all of Clinton, and Evelyn Doughty of Claxton; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Yarnell of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews.

His wife, Mary Ruth Yarnell, died earlier, as did three sisters, Oalean Howard, JoAnna Chamberlain and Minnie Seale, and three brothers, J.D. Yarnell, Richard Yarnell and Samuel Yarnell.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Feb. 4, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Tom Byrge and the Rev. Raymond Sanderson officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Zion cemetery in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Willie Ray Barnett
Retired shoe repairman

Willie Ray Barnett, 68, of Clinton, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Barnett was self-employed as a shoe repairman until his retirement two years ago. He had owned and operated the former Clinton Shoe Repair.

He was born in Taylor, Ark., on Dec. 10, 1929, the son of Walker D. and Nellie Holiway Barnett. He had lived in Clinton for 54 years.

Mr. Barnett had served in the Tennessee National Guard and was a member of Faith Masonic Lodge No. 756 in Oak Ridge. He was also a member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church of Clinton. He enjoyed fishing and playing musical instruments, his family said.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married in Oak Ridge 49 years ago, Delores McBryar Barnett; a daughter, Amanda J. West of Clinton; son, Jeffery R. Barnett and his wife, Brenda, of Oak Ridge; three sisters, Myrtis Canady of Karns, Elizabeth Taylor and her husband, Bill, and Dot Barnard and her husband, Dewey, all of Clinton; three grandchildren, Haley West of Clinton and Melanie Crone and Clint Rash and his wife, Teri, all of Oak Ridge; and by three great-grandchildren, Zachary Crone, Shena Crone and Eric Rash, all of Oak Ridge.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Ed Craven officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Delis Buford Richards Sr.
Retired appliance technician

Delis Buford Richards Sr., 87, of Lake City Highway, Clinton, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Richards was retired as an appliance technician with Buchanon & Jones Furniture Co., in Columbus, Ohio.

He had also worked for many years as a coal miner in LaFollette.

Born in Anderson County on Aug. 18, 1910, he was the son of Daniel and Margaret Richards.

Mr. Richards was a member and deacon at Blowing Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Vena Summers Richards; two daughters, Deloras Albertson and her husband, Al, of Clinton, and Tina Hale and her husband, Jim, of Eustis, Fla.; and four sons, Bernard Richards and his wife, Ruth, of Clinton, David Richards and his wife, Sherry, of Panama City, Fla., Don Richards and his wife, Charlene, of Seymour, Ind., and Allen Richards and his wife, Jackie, of Columbus, Ind.

Mr. Richards is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, a son, Larry Richards, and five sisters and four brothers died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Jimmy Davison and the Rev. David Crowley officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 12, at Bakers Forge cemetery in LaFollette.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Howard Irving Adler
Research scientist, technical editor

Howard Irving Adler, an Oak Ridge resident who was director of the Biology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1969 to 1975, died of cancer Thursday, March 12, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was 66.

He and his wife, Martha Vogeler Adler, who survives him, moved to Oak Ridge in 1956 when he accepted a position as a research scientist at ORNL.

The couple met in Ithaca, N.Y., while attending Cornell University, where Mr. Adler obtained his undergraduate degrees and doctorate in microbiology. He was born in New York City on July 1, 1931.

His career focused primarily on basic biological research on the effects of radiation on microorganisms. After he left ORNL's Biology Division, he was a senior scientist with Oak Ridge Associated Universities' Institute for Energy Analysis in 1975-1976.

Mr. Adler returned to ORNL as a member of the senior research staff in the Biology Division from 1976 to 1988, and then became director of microbiology for the Medical Sciences Division of Oak Ridge Associated Universities from 1988 to 1993.

Most recently and until his death, he served as vice president for research and development with Oxyrase Inc., a biotechnology company based on technology he developed and patented, with operating facilities in Tennessee and Ohio.

Among Mr. Adler's many contributions to basic science are the discovery and development of the "minicell." A widely used research tool, the minicell is routinely used for biochemical and genetic research on gene transfer and the genetic control of cell division in microorganisms.

Mr. Adler also developed novel methods of growing anaerobic bacteria, based on cell membrane fragments that remove oxygen from liquids. This finding, for which he won an Industrial Research 100 Award in 1984, was the basis for Oxyrase Inc.

Mr. Adler's academic assignments included serving as chairman of the University of Tennessee Life Sciences Program; as dean of students, Biology Division, ORNL; and as lecturer with many universities in the United States and abroad.

In addition to mentoring several doctoral students, he enjoyed guest lecturing for students in the Oak Ridge city schools. He also served as editor for several technical journals and published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals.

Mr. Adler was a guitarist and folk singer and enjoyed woodworking. His family said he also thoroughly enjoyed hiking and participating in other outdoor activities, and traveling and exploring the back roads of East Tennessee.

His recent civic activities included membership on the boards of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association and the Oak Ridge Institute of Continued Learning. He was a member of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

Mr. Adler regularly spoke of his pleasure in his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Doris Adler of Oak Ridge; a daughter, Elizabeth Lombardi and her husband, Douglas, of Oak Ridge; two sons, David Adler and his wife, Karin, of Oak Ridge, and Timothy Adler and his wife, Erin, of Kingston; and a brother, Michael Adler and his wife, Lynda, of Moneta, Va.

Mr. Adler is also survived by six grandchildren, Lloyd Lombardi, Lillian Adler and Samuel Adler, all of Oak Ridge, and Shanleigh Adler, Kelsey Adler and Delaney Adler, all of Kingston; and by several nieces and nephews.

A son, Charles Adler of Oak Ridge, and his father, Jesse Adler, died earlier.

A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at United Church, Chapel on the Hill, 85 Kentucky Ave.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at the family home at 128 Indian Lane.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Nature Conservancy, Tennessee Chapter, 50 Vantage Way, Suite 250, Nashville, TN 37228, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Ann P. Davis
Longtime Oak Ridge resident

Ann P. Davis of Oak Ridge died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a short illness.

Mrs. Davis had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1944. She was the widow of Reid Davis, who died in 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Cooke and her husband, Mike; a son, Mike Davis and his wife, Lois, all of Oak Ridge; three granddaughters, Kendra Cooke and Lisa Davis, both of Oak Ridge, Danna James and her husband, Roy, of Houston, Texas; a grandson, Shawn Cooke of Oak Ridge; a great-granddaughter, Chelcy James of Houston; a sister, Mabel Henderson of Stanley, N.C.; and by 34 nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at Oak Ridge Church of God with the Rev. Ed Denham, the senior adults pastor, officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations as memorials or a funeral fund to Oak Ridge Church of God, 121 N. Illinois Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Regina Taylor Parker
Former South Clinton teacher

Regina Taylor Parker, 91, of Brushy Pond, Ala., died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Parker was a retired school teacher. After she moved to Oak Ridge in 1943, she taught at South Clinton Elementary School for 24 years as a teacher with the Anderson County schools.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1906, in the Joppa community of Cullman County, Ala. She was the daughter of Creed Lewis and Callie Barnard Taylor. Before moving to Oak Ridge, Mrs. Parker taught for 13 years with the Cullman County schools at Jones Chapel, Brushy Pond, Arkadelphia, Sim-Central, Vinemont, Grand View and White City schools.

She was the widow of Oliver Clinton Parker. At the time of his death they had been married for 53 years.

Mrs. Parker is survived by two daughters, Barbara Joan Parker Phillips and Cheryl Ann Parker Black and her husband, David, all of Bremen, Ala.; a son, Oliver Taylor Parker and his wife, LaVerne, of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Gretchen Grub Maund of Athens, Ala., Caroline Grub Schnake of Denver, Colo., David Clinton Black and his wife, Dee, of Bremen and Lindsay Anne Parker of Dallas; two great-grandchildren, Stephani and Zachary Schnake; and by her husband's brothers and sister and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was to be held this morning, March 16, at Ryan's Creek Baptist Church in Cullman County.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to a charity of the donor's choice.
