George W. 'Bill' Vann
Retired Harriman barber

George W. "Bill" Vann, 84, of Harriman, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Vann had been a barber for 60 years and was owner of the former City Barber Shop in Harriman.

He was the son of James Elijah and Nannie Mae Vann, both now deceased. He was a member of Trenton Street Baptist Church in Harriman.

Mr. Vann is survived by his wife, Myrtle Vann; three sisters, Jennie Swagerty and her husband, Alvin, and Nanala "Lady" Phillips, all of Oliver Springs, and Irene Freels of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; two brothers, Robert Vann and his wife, Faye, of Oliver Springs, and Paul Vann of Lighthouse Point; an uncle, Rommie Vann of Wartburg; and by several nieces and nephews.

Ray Browder and Doffes Phillips were considered special friends.

His first wife, Kathleen Strunk Vann, died earlier, as did a brother, Clarence "Doc" Vann, three uncles, Fred Vann, Harry Vann and Johnnie Vann, and two brothers-in-law, Bark Phillips and Lee Freels.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Feb. 10, in the chapel of Kyker Funeral Home in Harriman with the Rev. Charles Kelly and the Rev. James McCluskey officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Roane Memorial Gardens in Rockwood.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Alfred Wayne Freels
Retired MMES pipefitter

Alfred Wayne Freels, 64, of Clinton, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Freels retired in 1990 as a pipefitter with Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc. He began his employment in Oak Ridge with Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He was a member of the Pipefitters Union Local No. 718.

Born July 2, 1933, in Anderson County, he was the son of Sam and Bessie Freels of Clinton, both now deceased.

Mr. Freels had lived in Anderson County all his life. He was a member of New Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church and a co-founder and an active member of the Windrock ATV Club. In earlier years, he enjoyed coaching at the Norwood Boys and Girls Club.

He is survived by his wife, Elmira Freels; three sons, Steve Freels and his wife, Betty, and Mike Freels and his wife, Barbie, all of Clinton, and Barry Freels and his wife, Becky, of Oliver Springs; three grandchildren, Shanna, Kara and Paige Freels, all of Clinton; and two step-grandchildren, Ashley and Jamie Dawson, both of Oliver Springs.

Mr. Freels is also survived by two sisters, Audrey Wood of Clinton and Jean Simmons of Oliver Springs; a brother, Joe Freels of Knoxville; and by several nieces and nephews.

Five sisters and three brothers died earlier: Beulah Galbraith of Oak Ridge, Marie Daugherty, Margaret Hoskins, Eleanor Gallion, Dean Stone and Jack Freels, all of Clinton, and Herbert Freels and Hugh Freels, both of Knoxville.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 28, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Ellis Patterson officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Billy Joe 'B.J.' Harris
Former LMES employee

Billy Joe "B.J." Harris, 58, of Knoxville, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at NHC HealthCare of Fort Sanders, Knoxville.

Mr. Harris had been employed for a total of 25 years with Lockheed Martin Energy Systems Inc. and Union Carbide Nuclear Division.

Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Patricia Harris; his mother, Pauline Pittard; five daughters, Alicia Harris, Carol Riser and her husband, Steffon, Sybil Cannon and her husband, Tony, Tabby Taylor and her husband, Damyen, and Kristie Jamison and her husband, Malachi; a son, Jeff Harris and his wife, Sylvia; a stepdaughter, Jill Thompson; and by four grandchildren, Courtney and Chelsea Harris, Adrian Riser and Jalen Taylor.

He is also survived by five sisters, Dora Pittard-Sheard, Yvonne Pittard, Paula King-Booker, Sue Lacy and Sherry Mills; five aunts, Josephine Lee, Reba Price, Sarah Fain, Myrtle Cale, and Corine Radical; an uncle he considered special, Curt Harris; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His father, Luscious Mills, and his stepfather, Fred Pittard, are deceased.

Phil Stewart and Dallas Patterson were considered special friends.

The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, in the chapel of Jarnigan & Son Mortuary, 2823 Martin Luther King Ave., Knoxville, with the Rev. Churchill Moore officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 30, at the East Tennessee State Veterans cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends may visit the funeral home any time Sunday before the funeral at 4.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Thompson Cancer Survival Center, 1915 White Ave., Knoxville, TN 37916.

Margaret Leona Hooks
Petros Baptist member

Margaret Leona Hobbs Hooks, 88, of Wartburg, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Hooks was a member of Petros Baptist Church.

She was born in Morgan County on March 27, 1909, the daughter of Lorenzo and Matilda Jane McCoy Hobbs. She was a retired cook.

Mrs. Hooks was the widow of Charlie Hooks.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Barbara Arms of Cincinnati, Ohio; several nieces and nephews, including a niece she considered special, Kate Bradley and her husband, J.W., of Wartburg, with whom she had lived for the past four years; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Hobbs of Wartburg.

A son, Howard Arms, and a sister and two brothers, Hazel Hensley, Sam Hobbs and Ellis Hobbs, all died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, March 27, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Stewart Sloan officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at Old Petros cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Dora Kate Schultz
Mother of Oak Ridge resident

Dora Kate Schultz, 92, of Talbott, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at her home following a brief illness.

Mrs. Schultz was the mother of Helen S. Lowery of Oak Ridge.

Following the death of her husband, Preston Monroe Schultz, in 1958, Mrs. Schultz spent several months each year in the home of her local daughter and son-in-law, J. Keith Lowery. She attended Glenwood Baptist Church when in Oak Ridge. She was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church in Talbott.

Until her health failed last year, Mrs. Schultz enjoyed flower gardening, and in earlier years she liked canning, tatting and quilting. Her family said that all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren had a quilt that she had made for them.

In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, she is survived by a son, Cortland M. Shultz and his wife, Margaret; a sister, Wanda K. Bishop; a stepdaughter, Mattie Kate Raines; grandchildren Rita L. Anderson of Oak Ridge, Sandra L. Boldu of Mexico City, Mexico, and Carroll Shultz, Ellrae Wolff and Margie Winstead, all of Talbott; and seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mayes Mortuary in Morristown is handling arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.

Burial will be at Lebanon Baptist Church cemetery in Talbott.

Marvin E. Short
Retired K-25 engineer

Marvin E. Short, 75, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Short was retired as an engineer at the Oak Ridge K-25 Site. He began his employment with Union Carbide Nuclear Division in 1943 at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, and when he retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in the middle 1980s he was a consultant in engineering at K- 25.

He was born in Loudon County, the son of John and Isa Short. He was a 1943 graduate of Sweetwater High School.

Mr. Short was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church of Knoxville. He enjoyed traveling and reading, his family said.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth McDaniel Short; a son, James Lewis Short of Oak Ridge; a daughter, Becky Hodge, and her husband, Bill, of Oak Ridge; two grandchildren, Rachel and Jessica Short; a brother, Kermit E. Short, and his wife, Margaret, of Kingston; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Short's son Marvin Short Jr. and an infant son both died earlier.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

The family will also receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Kyker Funeral Home in Sweetwater. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Kyker's.

Burial will be at West View cemetery in Sweetwater.

Eugene F. Ferguson
Harriman resident

Eugene F. Ferguson, 71, of Bluff Road, Harriman, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Ferguson is survived by his wife, Margaret Ferguson; a daughter, Judy McKinney and her husband, Charlie, of Kingston; a son, Larry E. Ferguson and his wife, Charlene, of Harriman; and his mother, Lennie Plemons of Midtown.

He is also survived by two sisters, Daisy Chitwood and Ruby Ledbetter, both of Harriman; three brothers, Jim Ferguson and Charles Ferguson, both of Harriman, and Carl Ferguson of Louisville; and four grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 18, in the chapel of Evans Mortuary in Rockwood with the Rev. David Allison officiating.

A graveside service was held Sunday, April 19, at Roane Memorial Gardens in Rockwood.

Gordon Campbell Fritz
Retired store manager

Gordon Campbell Fritz, 82, of Tyler Place, Clinton, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Fritz was retired as manager with Edwards Department Stores in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Charleston, S.C.

He was born in Charleston on Feb. 16, 1915, the son of Alma Campbell and George J. Fritz Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Fritz was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Charleston.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Spanos Fritz; a daughter, Patricia Price and her husband, W. James Price, of Alexandria, Va.; two sons, Gordon Fritz and his wife, Glenda Fritz, of Beaufort, S.C., and Jack Fritz and his wife, Brenda Fritz, of Clinton; and two brothers, H. Lawrence Fritz and his wife, Verdier Fritz, and George J. Fritz Jr., and his wife, Jeanette Fritz, all of Charleston.

Mr. Fritz is also survived by seven grandchildren, Gordon Fritz III, Andresan D. Fritz, J. Patrick Price, Peter C. Price, Philip A. Price, Katherine E. Fritz and Ty Fritz; and by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Ocean View Memorial Park in Myrtle Beach.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Alzheimer's Association, East Tennessee Chapter, 1924 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling local arrangements.

Eileen Alvis Greene
Retired Y-12 technologist

Eileen Alvis Greene, 55, of Kingston, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Roane Medical Center in Harriman.

Mrs. Greene was retired as a computing technologist and senior programmer in the Computing and Telecommunications Division at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. She began her employment with Union Carbide Nuclear Division on Aug. 6, 1961, and retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems on Sept. 30, 1994.

She was born in Florence, Ala., on Feb. 16, 1943.

Mrs. Greene had attended New York Avenue Church of Christ and at one time was active with Professional Secretaries Inc.

She is survived by her husband, James F. Greene; a daughter, Ginger Eileen Walbrecht Branam and her husband, Barry, of Heiskell; her mother, Tennie Grigsby Rutherford of Oak Ridge; a stepson, Alan Greene and his wife, Michelle, of Harriman; a sister, Edith Barker and her husband, Robert, of Oak Ridge; and a brother, William Alvis and his wife, Connie, also of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Greene is also survived by her mother-in-law, Ellan C. Gibbs of McMinnville; a grandson, Tyler Branam of Heiskell; two step-grandchildren, Jace Greene and Garrett Greene, both of Harriman; and by several nieces and nephews, including Debbie Barker and Bobby Barker.

Her father, Floyd H. Alvis, is deceased.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, April 20, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with Martin Pyle officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Lynnhurst cemetery in Knoxville.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the mortuary.
